An adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov’s iconic Russian novel “The Master and Margarita” is inching closer to a Western release as it heads to AFM this week.
The feature, directed by Michael Lockshin (“Silver Skates”), was a victim of the sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, despite both Locksin and the film itself being critical of Putin’s authoritarianism.
With the film’s rights now in the clear, Luminosity Pictures have boarded the project as sales agent, launching at AFM.
“The Master and Margarita” stars August Diehl (“Inglourious Basterds”), Claes Bang (“Bad Sisters”), Evgeniy Tsyganov (The Man Who Surprised Everyone”) and Yulia Snigir (“A Good Day to Die Hard”). Lockshin co-wrote the screenplay with Roman Kantor based on Bulgakov’s semi-autobiographical and anti-authoritarian novel, which has sold over 100 million copies internationally and been translated into over 40 languages.

Just days after the Russian blockbuster “The Master and Margarita” surged to the top of the domestic box office, Kremlin cronies, pro-war propagandists and an army of online trolls have waged a campaign to discredit the film and its director, Michael Lockshin, a U.S. citizen who was raised in the Soviet Union and has been outspoken in his opposition to the war in Ukraine.
A source close to the film, who asked not to be named out of fear of potential repercussions, tells Variety that the movie’s staggering success and pointed critique of authoritarian rule has struck a nerve in right-wing circles at a time when Russian President Vladimir Putin has cracked down on any form of dissent.
“The propagandists are both envious and also hateful that a movie with an anti-censorship, anti-totalitarian, anti-war message is getting so much popularity, that they have doubled down,” the source said.

Interesting Ethology
Director: Vasiliy Sigarev // Writers: Andrey Ilenkov, Vasiliy Sigarev
Still struggling to break free from the confines of the festival circuit, up and coming Russian director Vasiliy Sigarev (pictured above) has premiered his first two films to critical acclaim. His 2009 debut Wolfy played at Karlovy Vary and his excellent 2012 sophomore film, Living premiered at Rotterdam. Also a noted writer, Sigarev’s first two films are pronounced slices of miserablism, which may explain the lack of international distribution, which is unfortunate. His latest, Interesting Ethology, is apparently a comedy. Plot details are limited, but apparently a cut was shown to attract distributors at the Russian Pavilion back at Cannes 2014. Several cast members have notable credits, such as Yuriy Kutsenko, who appeared in two Timur Bekmambetov films, while Yuliya Snigir was featured in A Good Day to Die Hard (2013).

Looking back on Freezer, a thriller about a car mechanic (Dylan McDermott) confined in a walk-in freezer by Russian mobsters who believe he stole $8 million from them, I can pinpoint the exact moment when my shoulders sagged and I groaned, “Oh, it’s one of those movies.” The revelation came when, after a tense confrontation between McDermott’s Robert Saunders and an icy femme fatale type (Yuliya Snigir), she walks out, the freezer door slams shut and… we’re left to stare at McDermott’s vacant mug for the next ten minutes.
Yep, Freezer is a single-location thriller (or a claustrocore flick, if you want to get fancy about it), following in the footsteps of movies like Buried (Ryan Reynolds in a coffin), Devil (assorted chumps in an elevator with Satan) and Frozen (not the awesome Disney musical, the less-awesome horror flick about three friends stuck on a ski-lift). Unfortunately,...

Chicago – Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy can’t be blamed for the deteriorating state of modern action films any more than Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” can be held accountable for commercializing American cinema. Yet the spectacular box office performance of Nolan’s terrific series has naturally caused studios to misinterpret the root of their success.
Many tentpole attractions in 2013 have strained to emulate the grit and grimness of “The Dark Knight,” but have made no attempt to create an equally compelling story. The vast majority of screen time in Nolan’s “Batman” pictures was devoted to character development, with dialogue-driven set-pieces delivering nearly as many thrills as the ones involving explosions (kudos to the underrated screenwriting abilities of Nolan and his brother Jonathan). But since studio executives are too thick-headed, or simply too lazy, to realize that the power of “Dark Knight” was in its story, they’ve simply...

Since the first Die Hard in 1988, John McClane has found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, with the skills and attitude to always be the last man standing – and as cinemagoers we’ve loved him for it. However now John McClane faces his greatest challenge ever, this time on an international stage, with A Good Day to Die Hard. The fifth film in the franchise sees John McClane stumble on his estranged son Jack’s daring prison rescue of a Russian scientist bent on testifying against the countries corrupt leader. When the escape attempt goes awry, father and son McClane must work together to keep each other alive and keep the world safe for democracy.

Box office comparisons between the current and the previous Die Hard movies [See previous post: "Is the latest Willis / Die Hard movie a domestic box-office hit or a flop?"] However, when compared to the previous four movies in the franchise, the latest entry is nothing but a box-office disappointment -- though, I should add, it's the first movie in the franchise not to open in late spring/summer. (Pictured above: Willis as the invincible hero John McClane in A Good Day to Die Hard.) Directed by John McTiernan (who's currently facing a potential one-year prison sentence for lying to the FBI during the Anthony Pellicano wiretapping investigation several years ago), the original Die Hard movie released in 1988 scored $7.5 million (approximately $14 million today) at 1,276 theaters on its first weekend in wide release, July 22-24. The movie eventually cumed with $83 million (approximately $162.5 million today) in the United States and Canada. Director Renny Harlin's Die Hard 2: Die Harder (1990) grossed $21.74m (approx. $41m today) at 2,507 venues on its opening...

While I didn't dislike the Len Wiseman-directed fourth installment as much as others, the writing is clearly on the wall in that today's so-called action directors don't hold a candle to the likes of old schoolers such as John McTiernan who only seemed to get better while today's plastic wrapped clones only get worse. Russian actress Yuliya Snigir makes her U.S. debut in a big way in A Good Day to Die Hard, playing Irina, the daughter of a Russian political prisoner who goes up against John McClane (Bruce Willis) after he travels to Russia to help his estranged son. After starring in the action blockbuster, Sniger moved to Los Angeles, signed with CAA, and will be seen in indie film Delirium. She also has a role in upcoming action-thriller Freezer, starring Dylan McDermott. The Hollywood Reporter: Russian Edition spoke to the actress about how she got the part in the big Hollywood

Director: John Moore Writer: Skip Woods Starring: Bruce Willis, Jai Courtney, Sebastian Koch, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Yuliya Snigir, Radivoje Bukvic As we watch many of our beloved action stars aging, it is easy to feel nostalgia for a time of inflated blockbusters with bodybuilding royalty. Fortunately, icons like Bruce Willis aren’t hanging up their Barettas anytime soon. This Valentine’s Day, reawaken your love for John McClane with A Good Day To Die Hard. The newest installment in the Die Hard franchise pairs McClane (Willis) with his son, Jack (Jai Courtney). Jack, we discover, is embroiled in an espionage scheme gone awry, and is in desperate need of his estranged father’s particular skills. Cue begrudging grunts of appreciation, father-son bonding one liners, and jokes about Willis’ age. The film is not surprisingly centralized on the passing of the torch from the gruff but wryly amused McClane to his...

Marking the fifth entry in the franchise, A Good Day to Die Hard finally arrives on the big screen today, bringing with it all the action and explosions you’d expect from Bruce Willis and John McClane.
Willis is of course reprising his role as the iconic character once more, and Fox have debuted two new featurettes for the action blockbuster as it heads into theatres.
“Bruce Willis is back as iconoclastic, take-no-prisoners cop John McClane, who for the first time finds himself on foreign soil after traveling to Moscow to help his wayward son Jack (Jai Courtney) — unaware that Jack is really a highly-trained CIA operative out to stop a nuclear weapons heist. With the Russian underworld in pursuit, and battling a countdown to war, the two McClanes discover their opposing methods make them unstoppable heroes.”

Because a real-life John McClane gunning down bad guys has gotten kinda tired, why not immortalize the man who made American cowboying an International hit in life-size chocolate? Cause that’s what the Japanese have done in a recent press conference for McClane’s latest adventure, “A Good Day to Die Hard”. The curious part here is that the Japanese guy “playing” John McClane is way more muscular and in shape than the actual John McClane circa 1986, which is kind of ironic. Remember, ’86 McClane was supposed to be an Everyman, not the superhero he is in today’s movies. By comparison, check out the Japanese lady playing Yuliya Snigir’s role from the movie. Then again, she has less of a hill to climb than her male counterpart — basically, she just needs to not look bad in the leather bodysuit, which, I’m happy to say, she doe snot. Oh,...

Those who felt that John McClane’s last bad day, Live Free or Die Hard, didn’t feel quite Die Hard enough will find themselves prepping an apology to Len Wiseman once they emerge from A Good Day To Die Hard, the fourth sequel in the series and the one that will finally prove that it’s time to put the beloved action hero out to pasture.
Another personal story for McClane (Willis), he travels to Russia to save his son, Jack (Jai Courtney), who has been arrested for assassinating a man in a night club. However, the pair soon enough uncover a wide conspiracy, and the plot clumsily waltzes its way through a political intrigue scenario involving a Macguffin in the way of a top secret file, stolen Plutonium stashes and double crosses, though I suspect most audiences will struggle to recount all this, given...

It's supposed to be a parody of itself, right?
That's the only way to explain the ridiculously over-the-top, repetitively numbing fifth film in the "Die Hard" franchise, the clunkily titled "A Good Day to Die Hard."
John McClane used to be a cowboy. Now, he's a cartoon character – specifically, Wile E. Coyote, given how many times he should be seriously injured and/or killed in this movie. He's shot at, involved in several serious car accidents, crashes through glass windows and ceilings and plummets through floor after floor of high-rise scaffolding. The most he suffers is a scratch here and there, and then he's ready to pop back up again with a bemused twinkle in his eye and a wry quip.
Part of the charm of this character, which was crucial in defining Bruce Willis' career, was the regular-guy, Reagan-era resourcefulness he represented; now, he's weirdly superhuman. But as...

Title: A Good Day To Die Hard Directed by John Moore Starring: Bruce Willis, Jai Courtney, Sebastian Koch, Yuliya Snigir, Cole Hauser, Mary Elizabeth Winstead Written by Skip Woods Somewhere between 1995′s Die Hard With A Vengeance and 2007′s Live Free Or Die Hard John McClane went from being a cop with a bad life to full fledged superhero with a bad life. True, most of us grew up with McClane, and that alone would elevate him to such status, the everyman quality present in the original film is what makes that now twenty-five year old classic stand on its own legs. Chicago – The franchise has been in steady decline since the original “Die Hard,” quite simply one of the best action films of all time, but that still doesn’t prepare one for the truly horrendous “A Good to Day to Die Hard,” a complete waste of time on every level. Loud, obnoxious, boring, cartoonish, morally reprehensible, and just plain stupid, “A Good Day to Die Hard” is just bad, bad, bad. The movie bears so little resemblance to the first film in the franchise that they literally share nothing in common other than an actor and a character name (and this is clearly another script that was originally conceived as a non-franchise film and then barely forced into the series like a square peg into a round hole). If someone at Fox is wise, they’ll just rename this something generic before its DVD release and admit that this isn...

Hitting theatres hard over the Valentine’s weekend next week, A Good Day to Die Hard will see Bruce Willis once more front and centre for the latest instalment in the immensely successful action franchise.

We saw a great new trailer released earlier in the week, and now Yahoo Movies have debuted a new clip from the film, filled with as much action as you’d expect.

Those three little words you want to hear this Valentine’s Day: Yippee Ki Yay. Bruce Willis is back for another slice of action as John McClane in A Good Day to Die Hard, and Fox are banking on the idea that there will be plenty of people out there wanting an action-flavoured alternative over the romantic weekend next week.

We recently saw a new featurette taking us behind the scenes of the upcoming blockbuster. And now Fox have debuted a new trailer ahead of its release next weekend.
