As screenwriters of the Lifetime original movies “Salt-n-Pepa” and “Wendy Williams: The Movie,” Abdul Williams and Leigh Davenport, respectively, were each proposed an exciting challenge by Lifetime: They had to condense the rich and aspirant lives of cultural trailblazers to fit neatly into the television movie format.
“Salt-n-Pepa” follows a 20-year journey for the titular “first ladies of rap and hip hop,” while “Wendy Williams: The Movie” tells tales about the daytime talk show host from her childhood to the present. Although these women are icons now, their journeys to that star status couldn’t just focus on the pioneering highs. Both Davenport and Abdul Williams were committed to delivering a well-rounded narrative about complex, ambitious Black women in the entertainment industry.
Despite the fact that Salt-n-Pepa had success “before they even really knew what was happening,” says Abdul Williams, “I think there’s certain universal things about the story,...

Lifetime’s Salt-n-Pepa biopic has found its leads. G.G. Townson and Laila Odom will be playing Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton, respectively.
Additionally, the upcoming limited series will also star Cleveland Berto as music producer Hurby Azor, Jermel Howard as rapper Treach and Monique Paul as DJ Spinderella.
This still-untitled authorized biopic follows the acclaimed musicians as they first fall into the world of hip-hop after recording a song for a friend. It will track their impact on the music world, becoming one of the first all-female rap groups, changing the look and sound of the genre as they were unafraid to talk and sing about sex and their thoughts on men, and then going on to reach platinum status as recording artists and win a Grammy. The project also endeavors to uncover the women behind the music, revealing how their very different personalities fueled their creativity...

A trailer for the next film in The Purge series has landed. Called simply "The First Purge", the film is a prequel that will focus on the events that lead up to the very first Purge event.
The broad politics aside, I'm actually quite a fan of these films. Certainly the second film, The Purge: Anarchy, was an improvement on the first, but it's hard to knock a film with such a great premise that it could spawn such a popular series.
The film stars Marisa Tomei, Lex Scott Davis, Jermel Howard and many others.
The First Purge is out July 4, 2018.
