Caught Stealing follows Hank Thompson (Austin Butler), a burned-out former baseball player, as he’s unwittingly plunged into a wild fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of ’90s NYC. We hear Woon-a-Tai will play the role of Dale, Hank’s best friend since high school.

The Batman star Zoë Kravitz will join Austin Butler in Aronofsky’s 90s-set New York thriller, Caught Stealing.

Zoë Kravitz is reportedly in talks to star opposite Austin Butler in Darren Aronofsky’s next project, Caught Stealing. Butler’s involvement in the project was announced back in March, just as Butler was riding high off the back of a lauded villainous turn in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two. We haven’t heard much in the way of news since regarding the film, which is still in pre-production.

It looks like Aronofsky may have found his other lead for the film, however, with Kravitz is in advanced talks to join the production according to The Hollywood Reporter. The actor is in the midst of an impressive run herself, having made a splash as Selina Kyle in 2022’s The Batman before turning her attention to directing in the last couple of years.

The Sony Pictures project is based on the book by Charlie Huston, who will write the script for the movie as well. Zoë Kravitz is in talks to join Austin Butler in Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The film is based on the book of the same name by Charlie Huston, who also wrote the script. The story, per the logline, follows Hank Thompson, a burned-out former baseball player, who’s unwittingly plunged into a wild fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of 1990s New York City.

Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures, which is based in New York, is producing the film, alongside his partner Ari Handel. Together, they’ve worked on the director’s π, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, The Wrestler, Black Swan, Noah, Mother! and The Whale; as well as Tobias Lindholm’s The Good Nurse, Pablo Larraín’s Jackie, Lance Oppenheim’s Some Kind of Heaven, Josef Kubota Wladyka’s Catch the Fair One and Alex Pritz’s documentary The Territory.

Butler is part of a star-studded ensemble cast for the secretive project that includes Academy Award winners Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone, plus Pedro Pascal, Glen Powell, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, and Clifton Collins Jr.

Butler told The Hollywood Reporter that the film is a “wild adventure” unlike anything he has done before.

“I’m a huge fan of Ari and Joaquin [Phoenix] and Emily [Emma Stone] and [Dp] Darius Khondji and everybody involved. The entire team was incredible to work with,” Butler said. “I don’t want to give much away as far as the story and character go, but it was a wild adventure that I got to go on. I got to play a character who’s very different from anything that I’ve done.”

Butler, who was Oscar-nominated for his breakout transformative “Elvis” role, is set to lead Aronofsky’s upcoming feature “Caught Stealing.” Novelist Charlie Huston will adapt his own work for the screen. Protozoa is producing the Sony crime thriller. The novel is the first installment of Huston’s Henry Thompson trilogy series.

“Caught Stealing” was originally set for an adaptation in 2013 with Patrick Wilson cast in the lead role, now occupied by Butler. The story follows Hank Thompson, a former high school baseball prospect turned alcoholic bartender who gets caught up in a treasure hunt through New York City. A sadistic police officer tries to outrun Thompson, hitmen, and mobsters to find the treasure. Alec Baldwin was cast as the cop in the 2013 iteration that was slated to be written by David Hayter and directed by Wayne Kramer.

Austin Butler may not be confirmed to be co-starring in Michael Mann’s Heat 2, but the Masters of the Air actor has now been reported to be set to be the lead in Caught Stealing. Since 2022’s Elvis, Austin Butler’s star has really taken off. The former Disney and Nickelodeon child actor is capitalizing on his breakout film with roles in the recently released Dune: Part Two, where he plays the ruthless Feyd-Rautha.
