The Bride! is the latest attempt to resurrect the Classic Monsters once again, and there are already a ton of exciting updates about the Bride of Frankenstein remake. The original Bride of Frankenstein movie was released in 1935. It sees Dr. Frankenstein being forced to return to his monstrous experiments, and this time, he creates a bride for his first creation. The Frankenstein's Bride character is just as well-known as Frankenstein's Monster, with her makeup and hairstyle making her an LGBTQ+ icon, so it's unsurprising that Universal has tried hard to remake the film.
The closest the studio came to making the remake was with the Universal Dark Universe, a cinematic universe planned to include several iconic monsters such as Dracula, The Wolfman, The Mummy, and many others. The Bride of Frankenstein was one of them, and a remake within the Dark Universe had entered early conceptual development. However, after the...

Another of Universal's classic monsters, Wolf Man, is being remade, and the long-gestating project is finally coming to fruition. Ever since the failed Dark Universe, Universal has adopted a different plan to resurrect their classic monsters, which include characters such as Dracula, The Mummy, The Wolf Man, Frankenstein, and The Invisible Man. The studio decided to shift focus onto standalone stories over interconnectivity and shared cinematic universes, which has been difficult to achieve in the horror genre.
After the success of 2020's The Invisible Man proved that standalone horror films still worked for the monsters, Universal quickly green-lit a remake of The Wolf Man, but the project stalled. Various production delays kept the hirsute nightstalker away from the big screen, and the high-profile departure of star Ryan Gosling was seemingly the silver bullet that would end the project for good. Fortunately, Blumhouse and Universal trudged ahead on the remake of The Wolf Man,...

Fall is upon us, and that brings the changing of the leaves, apple cider, and of course, scary movies. Seeing scary movies when you’re a little kid is the best. Really wanting to see what all the bigger kids are seeing but also being scared of what you just saw. It’s a magical time to be alive… and now is a great time to run down the best kid’s films for Halloween. These are guaranteed to frighten your little ones but not leave you unable to sleep after they crawl into your bed at night.
Honorable Mention: The Monster Squad (1987)
While this film was a mainstay of my childhood, if you look at it today, some of the language hasn’t aged very well. I still love this film, as I can look past its flaws and remember the absolute glee I would get watching it over and over again.

Note: This review is based on the Director’s Cut.
Umbrella Entertainment resurrected a forgotten flick from the mid-90s with their Blu-ray release of Lord of Illusions last year. Back in 1995, writer-director Clive Barker ventured outside his normal horror otherworld playground to deliver this unconventional story that is part film noir and part supernatural fantasy thriller, but the result is all entertaining. Besides being a Barker joint, it starred an ex-Quantum Leaper, a Bond villain and a Seinfeld boss who loved making life a living hell for George Costanza!
And almost thirty years later, it indeed might be worth a revisit through fresh eyes.

The 1963 adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's gothic poem The Raven starred some of the most iconic horror actors of the 1960s, and was one of eight Poe-inspired movies released in just five years. As Poe is most famous for writing horror, it might be surprising to learn that he also wrote comedy, which usually featured puns. The Raven movie also mixed horror with humor, making its gothic horror movie premise into an early horror comedy. While The Raven bombed among critics of the time, it became a cult hit, earning an 83% Rotten Tomatoes score.
The Raven is about a trio of rival sorcerers. Horror legend Vincent Price plays Erasmus Craven, who is mourning the death of his wife, Lenore. Its titular raven is Dr. Bedlo, a sorcerer under a spell, and played by Peter Lorre, who often ad-libbed the funnier lines. Boris Karloff is the final member of the trio,...

You may not have noticed, but Beetlejuice is having a moment. With the upcoming sequel "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" all but guaranteed to make a ton of money this weekend at the box office, and Halloween on the way, the ghost with the most is going to be on everyone's minds for the next few months (even if we shouldn't say his name three times). You can see Beetlejuice everywhere: Movies, faux-episodes of "Hot Ones," through merchandise, and ... well, only somewhat at theme parks. You see, while Beetlejuice as a character is owned by the larger Warner Bros. Discovery entity, he does make appearances at the Universal Studios theme parks in California and Orlando. But these days, Universal execs might just be smacking their foreheads, because there was once a time not long ago when Universal Studios Orlando featured Beetlejuice as the ghost host with the most in a stage show that it eventually closed,...

The Creature From the Black Lagoon remake by James Wan could succeed due to its sympathetic monster element. A sympathetic Gill-man has already proven to appeal to mass audiences, as seen with Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water. The remake's modern setting could provide successful commentary on environmental destruction and humanity's impact.
Rumors have swirled of a remake of the Universal Monsters classic The Creature From the Black Lagoon, and it could turn out to be a hit unlike other modern Universal remakes that have fallen flat. Recently, the rumors have steadily evolved into something more concrete, and The Creature From the Black Lagoon remake has been confirmed to be in development. However, the amphibious monster has proven to be a difficult task for filmmakers, as various reboots and remakes have been pitched by some of horror's most famous names as far back as the 1980s.

Horror film fans will be aware of the Universal Classic Monsters franchise, which reigned over the entertainment landscape for two decades (1930-1950) by having, well, classic monsters like Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, Dracula, The Mummy, and more star in their own films while interacting with each other in “monster mash-up” crossovers. While The Mummy was revived as a franchise in the 2000s, and Van Helsing is undergoing some kind of reappreciation process, they didn’t manage to recreate the craze back then. Universal Studios had another go at it with the Dark Universe, but that was a colossal flop. Meanwhile, here in Bollywood, Maddock Studios has struck gold with its homegrown monsters. They started things off with Stree, which featured a ghost who abducted men that roamed around at night. Then came Bhediya, which used the werewolf trope to comment on environmentalism. Munjya modernized the concept of the poltergeist while...

Wan's remake of Creature From The Black Lagoon will finally bring a famous monster back to life after 40 years of failed attempts. Universal's history of failed attempts with famous directors like John Carpenter makes Wan's revival of the classic monster a highly anticipated endeavor. If the Creature reboot works, maybe Wan could head up a revival of the Dark Universe too.
James Wan's remake of a Universal horror classic can finally bring a famous monster back to life after 40 years of development hell. James Wan's movies primarily belong to the horror genre, though he's dabbled in everything from thrillers (Death Sentence) to blockbusters (Aquaman). Wan famously burst onto the scene with 2004's no-budget horror flick Saw, and over the years has terrified viewers with both the Insidious and The Conjuring movies. According to The Numbers, his directorial work alone has generated over $4 billion worldwide.

Director Fred Dekker’s 1987 cult classic monster mash The Monster Squad (watch it Here) features variations of the classic Universal Monsters characters Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, and the Gillman, but it wasn’t actually a Universal production. So to avoid getting in trouble with Universal, the movie’s effects crew at the Stan Winston Studio had to create their own specific designs of the creatures… but that didn’t stop them from sneaking homages to the original monsters in there. It has been known for a while now that designers Steve Wang and Matt Rose hid the face of the original Creature from the Black Lagoon somewhere on the neck of their Gillman suit. Now – as pointed out by Monster Squad super-fan Shawn Robare of Plastic Rocket Pop – the exact location of that face has been found!

Mickey Mouse's copyright has officially expired in 2024, allowing anyone to use his specific appearance in "Steamboat Willie" without legal consequences. Other iconic characters like Popeye, Betty Boop, Dracula, Frankenstein, Pluto, Conan the Barbarian, The Mummy, King Kong, Flash Gordon, and Donald Duck will also be entering the public domain in the 2020s. While the original appearances and specific depictions of these characters will become fair game, some modern versions and interpretations will still be protected under copyright law.
As the calendar turned to 2024, animation giant Mickey Mouse has entered public domain, soon to be joined by a litany of other iconic characters and franchises in the latter half of the 2020s. As 95 years have passed since the beloved Disney mascot's first appearance in Steamboat Willie in 1928, Mickey Mouse's copyright has officially expired in 2024, meaning anyone will be able to use the character in future without catching legal repurcussions. Welcome to the Hammer Factory. This month we dissect The Reptile (1966).
While Hammer Studios has been in business since 1934, it was between 1955 and 1979 that it towered as one of the premier sources of edgy, gothic horror. On top of ushering the famous monsters of Universal’s horror heyday back into the public eye, resurrecting the likes of Frankenstein, Dracula and the Mummy in vivid color, the studio invited performers like Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Ingrid Pitt and so many more to step into the genre limelight. Spanning a library housing over 300 films, Hammer Studios is a key part of horror history that until recently has been far too difficult to track down.
In late 2018, Shout Factory’s Scream Factory line began to focus on bringing Hammer’s titles to disc in the US, finally making many of the studio’s underseen gems available in packages that offered great visuals as well as insightful accompanying features.

You can’t talk about the history of horror without talking about Hammer Horror, with Hammer Film Productions over the years releasing countless classics including their own takes on iconic monsters such as Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Mummy, and their movies solidifying the likes of Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing as true icons in the horror genre.
Variety reports this morning that British theater producer John Gore has acquired Hammer Films and Studios, and he’ll lead a new team aiming to revitalize the legendary brand.
“Under Gore’s management, the plan is to invest significantly in Hammer Films to breathe new life into the studio, blending the nostalgic charm of Hammer with modern cinematic style and innovation, while preserving its heritage and library,” Variety’s exclusive report details. “A new slate of films and projects will be unveiled imminently.”
First up is the Eddie Izzard-starring Doctor Jekyll, set for release later this year.

Flops like Terminator: Genisys and The Mummy ended entire trilogies and franchises, killing future plans for sequels. Movies like Divergent: Allegiant and Looney Tunes: Back in Action underperformed at the box office, leading to the cancelation of future movies in their respective series. The critical failures of Fantastic Four (2015), Godzilla (1998), and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword resulted in the cancelation of planned sequels.
Some movies fail so hard that their reviews and box office receipts end up killing other unmade movies. A successful movie can spawn an entire franchise, and in some cases, lead to the revival of a whole genre. However, this proverbial sword cuts both ways. A truly disastrous film can kill a potential series or end a sub-genre’s reign of box office dominance. 2001’s Valentine ended the '90s slasher resurgence with its box office failure, while 2007’s horror sequel Hostel 2 flopped so hard...

Scream 6 directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin reveal whether their upcoming Universal Monsters film will kick off a new universe. Beginning in 1931 with Bela Lugosi's Dracula, the Universal Monsters franchise (later known as Universal Classic Monsters) was a series of horror films which adapted many iconic monster characters for the big screen. The Universal Monsters include Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, the Mummy and the Invisible Man, the latter two of whom recently got movie reboots.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin have responded to whether or not their upcoming Universal Monsters movie project will kickstart a new universe for the classic franchise. Bettinelli-Olpin says that, much like their approach to Scream 5 and 6, this project will be completely standalone, while Gillett says the studio's approach is a "weird, original way into a classic universe." Robert Kirkman discusses the possibility of working on more Universal Monster movies in the future after Renfield. The Universal Monster movies are an untapped well of potential that can revitalize these iconic characters. Kirkman's approach to the Dracula story explores the vampire's tale from the perspective of his long-suffering henchman, opening up new possibilities that can be explored for the entire pantheon of monsters.
During an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for Renfield, Kirkman revealed that there have been conversations about him developing another Universal Monster movie. He explained that there aren't any details he can share publicly. However, Kirkman made it clear he would love to further explore this universe. Check out Kirkman's full quote below:
Nothing that I could talk about publicly or anything. There's not anything 100% in the works, but with working with Universal and having the relationship with them that I do, it's something that's always constantly being talked about.

Renfield was always a risk for Universal Pictures: a high-concept reimagining of the Dracula mythology via horror-comedy. But in more ways than one, it’s come up a disappointment for the studio after an opening weekend which saw the Nicolas Cage-starring vehicle debut in fourth place during its first three days—behind not only Universal’s own The Super Mario Bros. Movie (which dropped a mere 40.6 percent) but also the much cheaper horror movie, The Pope’s Exorcist. While Renfield walked away with $7.7 million in its debut, Russell Crowe as an exorcist compelled moviegoers to hand over $9.1 million this past weekend.
There are several ironies to this, with the first being Universal put Renfield out one weekend after the biggest release of its fiscal quarter, presumably because the studio gambled there would be little overlap in audiences between the family-friendly Mario brand and what is definitely a hard, blood-splattered R in Renfield.

In The Mummy, the priest Imhotep was cursed with the Hom-Dai, but the events of the movie proved that this may have ultimately done more harm than good. For thousands of years after the curse was enacted, the Medjai stood guard over Imhotep's tomb, fearing that someone may uncover the disgraced priest's body and begin the journey to immortality seen in The Mummy. The fact that this was a problem poses the question: why did they use the Hom-Dai curse to begin with?
Before being cursed in The Mummy, Imhotep had been the Pharaoh's high priest. However, he had secretly been having a romantic affair with his King's imperial concubine, Anck-Su-Namun. When they were found out, Imhotep and his love murdered the Pharaoh, and Anck-Su-Namun killed herself to escape future punishment. Devastated, Imhotep fled to Hamunaptra, where he tried to use the Book of the Dead to resurrect The Mummy's Anck-Su-Namun.

Regular /Film readers should probably know by now that I'm a big fan of Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights event. The Orlando iteration will always be my hometown event, and I'll admit that the high-quality visuals and atmospheric worldbuilding will probably never be beaten for me. That being said, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't hyped for the brand-new Horror Nights expansion coming to Las Vegas, which Universal Parks & Resorts announced today.
In a press release, Universal announced that the "new horror experience," as they referred to it, will be located in the AREA15 entertainment district in the City of Sin. The 110,000-square-foot space is expected to be home to a handful of mazes that have made Horror Nights a must-attend event. While details on these mazes have not been released, they are expected to be based on Universal's classic and modern horror output.

Back in the ‘80s, if you were a kid, nothing seemed cooler than being part of a rag-tag group of youngsters that fought monsters. Fast forward to today, if you’re an adult, nothing seems cooler than being in the ‘80s and part of a gang that fights monsters. Some things just never change! The Duffer Brothers, who created Stranger Things, knew that when they launched the highly popular series on Netflix about the supernatural events in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. But in reality, they were just trading in on some of that decade’s nostalgia with inspiration from movies like E.T., Poltergeist, Ghostbusters, and The Goonies produced.
Yeah, if we’re talking ‘80s movies about rambunctious kids battling scary monsters, then we can’t forget to mention The Monster Squad. Directed by Fred Dekker and co-written by Shane Black, the story follows a kick-ass group of pre-teens...

As The Mummy's chief antagonist, Imhotep plays a major role in the movie, but was he a real person? The Mummy is of the finest action-adventure films of the 1990s, featuring exciting set-pieces, memorable one-liners, and charming performances from Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. But, as a movie based around black magic, featuring the malevolent undead and carnivorous scarab beetles that can strip the flesh of a human being in seconds, it takes some creative liberties with its ancient Egyptian source material.
In The Mummy, Imhotep is portrayed as the high priest of Pharaoh Seti I. The film's prologue, set in 1290 BC, establishes that Imhotep had an affair with Anck-su-namun, the Pharaoh's mistress. Imhotep and Anck-su-namun murder the Pharaoh after he discovers their illicit love before the latter takes her own life. If you were a kid in the eighties, you wanted to be part of The Monster Squad. While a box office dud that made under 4 million dollars at the box office, once this tween classic hit HBO and VHS, its cult status grew. Directed by Fred Dekker (Night of the Creeps), who co-wrote with the legendary Shane Black, The Monster Squad revolves around a group of horror-obsessed boys who come face to face with a gaggle of classic monsters, led by the evil Count Dracula (Duncan Regehr). Now they have to battle Dracula, The Mummy, the Gil-Man and the Wolfman while getting help from a descendent of Van Helsing and the surprisingly gentle Frankenstein’s monster (Tom Noonan – in a performance that tugs at the heartstrings).

Imhotep's death scene in 1999's The Mummy was augmented in a key way from how it was originally planned to appear. Stephen Sommers' The Mummy blended real history and fiction and brought an adventure-driven flair to its story of the villainous mummy Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), a priest mummified alive in ancient Egypt. Thousands of years later, Imhotep is accidentally resurrected in 1926 during an expedition to the ancient city of Hamunaptra.
In the final showdown, after Imhotep is rendered mortal by Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) and fatally stabbed by Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser), he slips into a bog with his body returning to its rotten state as Rick, Evelyn, and Jonathan Carnahan (John Hannah) watch. However, Imhotep's death was originally a more basic villain demise. It later became clear to director Stephen Sommers that The Mummy needed to end on a more supernatural note.

In this year’s edition of The Horrors of Blumhouse guests are welcomed into Blumhouse Video, an abandoned haunted VHS rental store presenting the body-swapping slashterpiece Freaky & the terrifying summer blockbuster The Black Phone.
