Grizzly Night is set to be the first feature project for newly launched production company FourJFilms.

Director Burke Doeren’s film has completed production and is exploring distribution and festival opportunities. The fact-based movie centers on the courageous actions of a young Glacier National Park ranger to help keep visitors safe amid two grizzly bear attacks in the summer of 1967.

The cast includes Charles Esten (Outer Banks), Oded Fehr (The Mummy), Brec Bassinger (Stargirl), Jack Griffo (The Thundermans), Josh Zuckerman (Oppenheimer), Joel Johnstone (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Matt Lintz (Ms. Marvel).

FourJFilms is founded by Tyson Call, who serves as executive producer on Grizzly Night. The movie’s producers include Doeren and Kellie Doeren for 22 Waves Creative, along with Lauren Call.

Grizzly Night filmed outside of Park City, Utah. FourJFilms aims to prioritize productions that will shoot in that state, with a focus on independent filmmakers and message-driven dramas.

H​onorable Mention: The Monster Squad (1987)

W​hile this film was a mainstay of my childhood, if you look at it today, some of the language hasn’t aged very well. I still love this film, as I can look past its flaws and remember the absolute glee I would get watching it over and over again.

Deadline reports this morning that Sky has joined forces with Deep Fusion Films on Hammer: Heroes, Legends and Monsters, a feature documentary releasing in November 2024.

“The 90-minute feature doc will track Hammer’s progression from a back off in London’s Regent Street to its iconic status within the horror film genre,” Deadline previews.

The outlet continues, “Deep Fusion co-founder Benjamin Field is helming the doc, with the director revisiting the people in front of and behind the camera who made the operation a byword for horror, and will include numerous key contributors, unseen archive footage and interviews with the likes of Tim Burton, John Carpenter and Joe Dante.

One of this year’s home video highlights for the Halloween season was supposed to be a brand new Universal Monsters Limited Edition 4K set, originally set for release Today.

Bloody Disgusting has learned this afternoon, however, that the set will no longer be releasing in time for Halloween 2023. In fact, the 4K set has been bumped all the way to 2024.

Universal explains, “Due to an unexpected packaging issue, the originally planned October 3, 2023 release of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s upcoming 4K collectible box set of the “Universal Classic Monsters Limited Edition Collection” is moving to February 13, 2024. Welcome to the Hammer Factory. This month we dissect The Reptile (1966).

While Hammer Studios has been in business since 1934, it was between 1955 and 1979 that it towered as one of the premier sources of edgy, gothic horror. On top of ushering the famous monsters of Universal’s horror heyday back into the public eye, resurrecting the likes of Frankenstein, Dracula and the Mummy in vivid color, the studio invited performers like Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Ingrid Pitt and so many more to step into the genre limelight. Spanning a library housing over 300 films, Hammer Studios is a key part of horror history that until recently has been far too difficult to track down.

In late 2018, Shout Factory’s Scream Factory line began to focus on bringing Hammer’s titles to disc in the US, finally making many of the studio’s underseen gems available in packages that offered great visuals as well as insightful accompanying features.

September has arrived, and with it comes a whole host of new movies to watch on streaming. Whether you’re looking to kick Spooky Season off early with a fun horror movie, hoping to catch up on a new release you missed in theaters or just want to curl up with a cozy rom-com, there is a litany of choices below. Kick off Spooky Season early with an 80s cult classic that should be as popular as “The Goonies.” The 1987 film “The Monster Squad” follows a group of kids whose monster knowledge comes in handy when an ancient curse brings iconic Universal Monsters to life in Los Angeles.

You can’t talk about the history of horror without talking about Hammer Horror, with Hammer Film Productions over the years releasing countless classics including their own takes on iconic monsters such as Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Mummy, and their movies solidifying the likes of Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing as true icons in the horror genre.

Variety reports this morning that British theater producer John Gore has acquired Hammer Films and Studios, and he’ll lead a new team aiming to revitalize the legendary brand.

“Under Gore’s management, the plan is to invest significantly in Hammer Films to breathe new life into the studio, blending the nostalgic charm of Hammer with modern cinematic style and innovation, while preserving its heritage and library,” Variety’s exclusive report details. “A new slate of films and projects will be unveiled imminently.”

First up is the Eddie Izzard-starring Doctor Jekyll, set for release later this year.

Flops like Terminator: Genisys and The Mummy ended entire trilogies and franchises, killing future plans for sequels. Movies like Divergent: Allegiant and Looney Tunes: Back in Action underperformed at the box office, leading to the cancelation of future movies in their respective series. The critical failures of Fantastic Four (2015), Godzilla (1998), and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword resulted in the cancelation of planned sequels.

Some movies fail so hard that their reviews and box office receipts end up killing other unmade movies. A successful movie can spawn an entire franchise, and in some cases, lead to the revival of a whole genre. However, this proverbial sword cuts both ways. A truly disastrous film can kill a potential series or end a sub-genre’s reign of box office dominance. 2001’s Valentine ended the '90s slasher resurgence with its box office failure, while 2007’s horror sequel Hostel 2 flopped so hard...

It’s not very often that you see the 1987 cult classic monster mash The Monster Squad (watch it Here) in the news, but we have some cool news to share about the movie today! Dawn of the Discs has revealed that Kino Lorber is planning to give The Monster Squad a 4K Uhd release sometime later this year.

A specific release date has not yet been announced, but it’s good to know that The Monster Squad will be hitting 4K later this year. As of right now, all we know that this release will contain is the 4K disc with a “Brand New Hdr/Dolby Vision Master – From a New 4K Scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative!“, plus a regular Blu-ray copy.

Scream 6 directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin reveal whether their upcoming Universal Monsters film will kick off a new universe. Beginning in 1931 with Bela Lugosi's Dracula, the Universal Monsters franchise (later known as Universal Classic Monsters) was a series of horror films which adapted many iconic monster characters for the big screen. The Universal Monsters include Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, the Mummy and the Invisible Man, the latter two of whom recently got movie reboots.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin have responded to whether or not their upcoming Universal Monsters movie project will kickstart a new universe for the classic franchise. Bettinelli-Olpin says that, much like their approach to Scream 5 and 6, this project will be completely standalone, while Gillett says the studio's approach is a "weird, original way into a classic universe." Invaluable: The True Story of an Epic Artist Blu-ray from Synapse

The life and art of Evil Dead special effects artist Tom Sullivan is the subject of Invaluable: The True Story of an Epic Artist. Directed by Ryan Meade, the documentary will be released on Blu-ray on August 1 via Synapse Films.

It features archival Super 8mm, Hi8, VHS, audio, and photo materials, plus new interviews with Bruce Campbell, Ted Raimi, Josh Becker, Danny Hicks, Hal Delrich, Ellen Sandweiss, Betsy Baker, Theresa Tilly, Scott Spiegel, and more.

Robert Kirkman discusses the possibility of working on more Universal Monster movies in the future after Renfield. The Universal Monster movies are an untapped well of potential that can revitalize these iconic characters. Kirkman's approach to the Dracula story explores the vampire's tale from the perspective of his long-suffering henchman, opening up new possibilities that can be explored for the entire pantheon of monsters.

During an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for Renfield, Kirkman revealed that there have been conversations about him developing another Universal Monster movie. He explained that there aren't any details he can share publicly. However, Kirkman made it clear he would love to further explore this universe. Check out Kirkman's full quote below:

Nothing that I could talk about publicly or anything. There's not anything 100% in the works, but with working with Universal and having the relationship with them that I do, it's something that's always constantly being talked about.

Renfield was always a risk for Universal Pictures: a high-concept reimagining of the Dracula mythology via horror-comedy. But in more ways than one, it’s come up a disappointment for the studio after an opening weekend which saw the Nicolas Cage-starring vehicle debut in fourth place during its first three days—behind not only Universal’s own The Super Mario Bros. Movie (which dropped a mere 40.6 percent) but also the much cheaper horror movie, The Pope’s Exorcist. While Renfield walked away with $7.7 million in its debut, Russell Crowe as an exorcist compelled moviegoers to hand over $9.1 million this past weekend.

There are several ironies to this, with the first being Universal put Renfield out one weekend after the biggest release of its fiscal quarter, presumably because the studio gambled there would be little overlap in audiences between the family-friendly Mario brand and what is definitely a hard, blood-splattered R in Renfield.

In The Mummy, the priest Imhotep was cursed with the Hom-Dai, but the events of the movie proved that this may have ultimately done more harm than good. For thousands of years after the curse was enacted, the Medjai stood guard over Imhotep's tomb, fearing that someone may uncover the disgraced priest's body and begin the journey to immortality seen in The Mummy. The fact that this was a problem poses the question: why did they use the Hom-Dai curse to begin with?

Before being cursed in The Mummy, Imhotep had been the Pharaoh's high priest. However, he had secretly been having a romantic affair with his King's imperial concubine, Anck-Su-Namun. When they were found out, Imhotep and his love murdered the Pharaoh, and Anck-Su-Namun killed herself to escape future punishment. Devastated, Imhotep fled to Hamunaptra, where he tried to use the Book of the Dead to resurrect The Mummy's Anck-Su-Namun.

Regular /Film readers should probably know by now that I'm a big fan of Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights event. The Orlando iteration will always be my hometown event, and I'll admit that the high-quality visuals and atmospheric worldbuilding will probably never be beaten for me. That being said, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't hyped for the brand-new Horror Nights expansion coming to Las Vegas, which Universal Parks & Resorts announced today.

In a press release, Universal announced that the "new horror experience," as they referred to it, will be located in the AREA15 entertainment district in the City of Sin. The 110,000-square-foot space is expected to be home to a handful of mazes that have made Horror Nights a must-attend event. While details on these mazes have not been released, they are expected to be based on Universal's classic and modern horror output.

But in reality, they were just trading in on some of that decade’s nostalgia with inspiration from movies like E.T., Poltergeist, Ghostbusters, and The Goonies produced.

As The Mummy's chief antagonist, Imhotep plays a major role in the movie, but was he a real person? The Mummy is of the finest action-adventure films of the 1990s, featuring exciting set-pieces, memorable one-liners, and charming performances from Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. But, as a movie based around black magic, featuring the malevolent undead and carnivorous scarab beetles that can strip the flesh of a human being in seconds, it takes some creative liberties with its ancient Egyptian source material.

In The Mummy, Imhotep is portrayed as the high priest of Pharaoh Seti I. The film's prologue, set in 1290 BC, establishes that Imhotep had an affair with Anck-su-namun, the Pharaoh's mistress. Imhotep and Anck-su-namun murder the Pharaoh after he discovers their illicit love before the latter takes her own life. Imhotep tries to resurrect Anck-su-namun but is stopped by the Medjai, the Pharaoh's royal guard, and buried...

If you were a kid in the eighties, you wanted to be part of The Monster Squad. While a box office dud that made under 4 million dollars at the box office, once this tween classic hit HBO and VHS, its cult status grew. Directed by Fred Dekker (Night of the Creeps), who co-wrote with the legendary Shane Black, The Monster Squad revolves around a group of horror-obsessed boys who come face to face with a gaggle of classic monsters, led by the evil Count Dracula (Duncan Regehr). Now they have to battle Dracula, The Mummy, the Gil-Man and the Wolfman while getting help from a descendent of Van Helsing and the surprisingly gentle Frankenstein’s monster (Tom Noonan – in a performance that tugs at the heartstrings).

In the years following The Monster Squad’s release, the kids from the film went on to varied careers before reuniting after the movie...

Imhotep's death scene in 1999's The Mummy was augmented in a key way from how it was originally planned to appear. Stephen Sommers' The Mummy blended real history and fiction and brought an adventure-driven flair to its story of the villainous mummy Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), a priest mummified alive in ancient Egypt. Thousands of years later, Imhotep is accidentally resurrected in 1926 during an expedition to the ancient city of Hamunaptra.

In the final showdown, after Imhotep is rendered mortal by Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) and fatally stabbed by Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser), he slips into a bog with his body returning to its rotten state as Rick, Evelyn, and Jonathan Carnahan (John Hannah) watch. However, Imhotep's death was originally a more basic villain demise. It later became clear to director Stephen Sommers that The Mummy needed to end on a more supernatural note.

Art the Clown stands 5” tall and features “Blood Bath” action that makes blood splatter appear when exposed to the cold. He comes with a trash bag that holds a pistol, knife, and hacksaw.

Elvira Statue from Mezco Toyz

Mezco Toyz has unveiled an Elvira 1:6 scale premium statue as part of its Static-6 line. Due out in August 2023, the Mistress of the Dark can be yours for 250.

The hand-painted statue measures 11″ tall and 7″ deep.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and Hello Horror‘s Vanessa Decker and Ryan Valdez kicked off the festivities with a trip to the 2022 Halloween Horror Nights, which returned to Universal Studios Hollywood this month.

The two already teased a behind-the-scenes look at two of the houses and now take a deep dive into the nonstop chaos that haunts all of Universal Studios Hollywood alongside red carpet interviews with everyone from The Chiodo Brothers, who talk the newly announced Killer Klowns from Outer Space video game, to Child’s Play creator Don Mancini, who reveals the themes of “Chucky” season two and the tease of an exorcism. Jason Blum also speaks on the finale of the new Halloween trilogy, Halloween Ends.

Universal Studios Hollywood finalized the lineup today for its popular Halloween Horror Nights with the announcement that its “Terror Tram” has expanded to include a cinematic twist on Jordan Peele’s Us. The new element will involve The Tethered, a revolutionary army of vengeful doppelgängers who terrorize visitors to the Jupiter’s Claim set from the filmmaker’s latest, Nope. The set was recently added as a permanent part of the tour.

Halloween Horror Nights runs September 8-October 31 this year.

Other offerings — most of them movie-related — in the newly-finalized lineup include:

In a first-of-its-kind experience, Universal Studios Hollywood is collaborating with The Weeknd for an all-new Halloween Horror Nights maze inspired by his record-breaking After Hours album.

“The Weeknd: After Hours Nightmare” will be a part of the popular seasonal attraction this year at both Universal Studios and Universal Orlando, according to the theme park.

The Grammy-winning singer’s addition marks the second original maze for the upcoming Halloween Horror Nights season, the first being “Monsters: Legends Collide,” which will feature Universal Pictures’ horror icons The Wolf Man, Dracula and The Mummy, according to the theme park.
