Showcasing just three movies, today’s Netflix panel was a fascinating insight into the wide-ranging tastes of a company fast changing the landscape of the film industry.

First up was the Coen brothers’ portmanteau western, The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs, which was represented by an all-actor line-up comprising Zoe Kazan, Bill Heck, Harry Melling and Tim Blake Nelson, who plays the titular Buster Scruggs himself.

Talking to Deadline’s Nancy Tartaglione, Blake Nelson revealed that the project had been in gestation for a very long time, and that he was the first actor approached. “When I was given the script, [my story] was the only one that had been written,” he said. “I read the rest of them after they were written, which was 15 years later, and I was certainly excited to be a part of it because the other scripts were just as fantastic as the one I was doing.”

While most audience members know Paul Greengrass best as the director of the two best regarded Jason Bourne movies, that’s not where his true specialty resides. He’s far more at home crafting hard hitting docudramas. Bloody Sunday was his calling card film, while United 93 remains his finest hour. Academy Award-nominated director Paul Greengrass tackles the true story of Norway’s deadliest terror attack since World War II in the first trailer for “22 July.”

On that day in 2011, a far-right extremist set off a car bomb in Oslo before carrying out a mass shooting at a leadership camp for teens. 77 people, many of whom were teens, were killed. The trailer, and the film itself, analyzes the attack through the eyes of one survivor, who has to go through a physical and emotional journey to heal.

“22 July,” which Greengrass also wrote, is based on the book “One of Us: The Story of an Attack in Norway — and Its Aftermath,” by Asne Seierstad.

After one film this year about the 2011 Norway attacks, in which right-wing terrorist Anders Behring Breivik killed 77 in the worst attack in the country since the Second World War, I’m not sure we need another. However, Paul Greengrass has proven to be adept at capturing harrowing real-life tragedies in the past, and we’ll find out soon if his new drama is a compelling retelling of this story as it premieres tomorrow at Venice.

The American Film Institute (AFI) has announced the films that will be featured in their New Auteurs and American Independents sections at the upcoming AFI Fest 2017 presented by Audi. Joachim Trier’s Louder than Bombs [pictured] starring Jesse Eisenberg and Gabriel Byrne won four Amanda awards at the 44th Norwegian Film Festival (Aug 20-16), including Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Editing.

In 2015, the film was the first Norwegian feature to play in competition at Cannes for 36 years.

Marking the first English language film made by Trier, Louder Than Bombs follows a father and his two sons who are made to come to terms with the death of their mother, a notable war photographer.

Roar Uthaug’s The Wave took the night’s top prize, Best Norwegian Film in Theatrical Release. Submitted by Norway to last year’s Academy Awards for the best foreign-language category, it depicts the 1934 Tafjord Tsunami which resulted in the death of 40 people.

Revenge thriller marks first Norway-Canada co-production in 15 years.

Norwegian revenge thriller The Doll in the Ceiling (Dukken i taket) has begun principal photography in Norway.

The $2m (NOK16.4m) psychodrama marks the feature debut of director Kjersti Steinbø, who also adapted the novel of the same title by Norwegian novelist Ingvar Ambjørsen.

The story centres on a woman who seeks out her deceased sister’s rapist and embeds herself in his idyllic family to destroy his life. It is earmarked for release in autumn 2015.

Producers are Paul Barkin of Toronto’s Alcina Pictures and Kristine Knudsen of new Bergen-based company Den Siste Skilling. Executive producers are Lisa G. Black of Garnet Girl (Us) and Mark Gingras of Vigilante Productions.

It marks the second Norway-Canada treaty co-production, the last being more than 15 years ago.
