He went on a self inflicted hypo caloric famine diet for six years, on fifteen hundred calories per day in order to induce atrophy and drop from his natural and solid bodyweight of 290-300 pounds, to his current acting weight in order to have better opportunities to land roles.

His uncle, Pepe Hern, an immigrant from Spain, acted alongside Steve McQueen in the Magnificent Seven, and alongside Clint Eastwood in Joe Kid and Gun Smoke and starred in the Charlie's Angels TV series.

Has a younger brother, Damon, who was a former poster child for the American Cancer Society when he was battling Leukemia as a small child. Damon was also an active member of the Special Olympics.
