The latest episode of Dune: Prophecy, "Twice Born," climaxes with an exciting scene during a meeting of the Landsraad, the group of great houses who together control the direction of the Imperium. It does not go how we expect. Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), the new attack dog of Emperor Corrino (Mark Strong) makes a public show of using his powers of immolation to execute several people who have broken the sacred prohibition against thinking machines. It's a grisly display of power that will have the great houses thinking twice before they cross the emperor.
Desmond also foils a plot to blow up the whole meeting hatched by a group of rebels, including House Corrino's own swordmaster Kieran Atreides (Chris Mason). And on top of that, the emperor's own daughter Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) calls out her dad in public for being complicit in the death of her fiancée Pruitt Richese back in the premiere episode.

Dune: Prophecy takes place 10,000 years before the Dune films, yet characters are still using the same energy shields. Despite occurring much earlier on Dune's timeline, Dune: Prophecy bears a notable resemblance to the world and characteristics that audiences are familiar with from Denis Villeneuve's movies. On the one hand, maintaining aesthetic continuity between projects helps build the universe Warner Bros. is looking for, but on the other, it raises questions about technological development.
Part of what makes Dune so fascinating as a sci-fi narrative is that technology doesn't play as prevalent of a role as it does in something like The Matrix or Blade Runner. Sure, there are spaceships and energy shields, but they're not as impactful in the story as the Voice. As addressed in Dune: Prophecy's first episode, computers and artificial intelligence are primarily out of the picture after the Butlerian Jihad, but that still...

"Dune: Part Two" remains one of the best blockbusters of the year, a brilliant piece of filmmaking about religion, revenge, and big worms. As good as the movie is, however, it leaves out a lot of the worldbuilding and context that makes the source material by Frank Herbert so special, such as the exact reason why the spice is so important to controlling the universe, how the Bene Gesserit gained so much power and influence, and what exactly mentats do.
That's where "Dune: Prophecy" comes in. Previously titled "Dune: The Sisterhood," the HBO prequel series is set 10,000 years before the events of Herbert's original novel, telling the story of how the Bene Gesserit order was created in the aftermath of the Butlerian Jihad (in which "thinking machines" were wiped out and banned). Just when you thought the world of "Dune" couldn't possibly get any bigger or more epic, HBO has decided to bring the sci-fi franchise to the small screen with "Dune: Prophecy" -- not with another sequel, but through a prequel series set in the same continuity as director Denis Villeneuve's two movies. Set 10 thousand years before Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides became the "hero" of Arrakis and took on the might of the entire Imperium, the spinoff will instead focus on the sect of all-knowing space witches referred to as the Bene Gesserit. Their primary function, you'll recall, has been the manipulation of genetic family trees in a never-ending quest to produce the Kwisatz Haderach, the chosen one figurehead prophesied in eons past to represent the next step of human evolution.

Next month, HBO and Max will debut Dune: Prophecy, a TV series spun off from the Dune movies starring Timothée Chalamet. 2024 has already been a massive year for the Dune faithful. In the early months, we got Denis Villeneuve’s much-anticipated Dune: Part Two, a thunderous adaptation of the second half of Frank Herbert’s novel. Then came the news that Villeneueve is, indeed, hard at work on a Part Three, set to adapt sequel novel Dune: Messiah. And that’s not all – before the year is through, we’ll also see Dune: Prophecy, the six-part streaming series unspooling the origins of the Bene Gesserit order, delving deeper into the lore underlying Herbert’s sprawling universe.
The series – which has long been in development in various forms – no longer has direct involvement from Villeneuve and his Dune writer Jon Spaihts. But as executive producer Jordan Goldberg confirms to Empire, it absolutely is “in the same universe” as Villeneuve’s films. “We feel like we have to follow the essence of what Denis has done.

While attending New York Comic Con, Dune: Prophecy executive producer Jordan Goldberg explains the extent of Denis Villeneuve's involvement in the upcoming series. Set 10,000 years before the story of Paul Atreides, the series developed by Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker will chronicle the origins of the Bene Gesserit through the eyes of Harkonnen sisters Valya (Emily Watson) and Tula (Olivia Williams). Max's Dune: Prophecy marks the third recent installment in the franchise after Villeneuve's two hit films.
During a recent interview with Screen Rant at Nycc, Goldberg provided some clarification regarding Villeneuve's role in the show. According to the EP, Villeneuve has been very hands-off for the entire series, instead focusing efforts on his expansion of the film side of the franchise. Goldberg does call Villeneuve "aspirational," however, in terms the epic scale the show's creative team was going for. Check out Goldberg's comment below:

Dune: Prophecy executive producer Jordan Goldberg explains how accurate the streaming series is to the books. Taking place 10,000 years before Dune, the prequel is set long before the rise of Paul Atreides as seen in Denis Villeneuve's Dune and Dune: Part Two adaptations of Frank Herbert's original novel. Dune: Prophecy's main cast of characters are Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson), Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams), Empress Natalya (Jodhi May), Princess Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina), and Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong).
While speaking with Screen Rant at New York Comic Con, Goldberg clarified that Dune: Prophecy is a close adaptation of Sisterhood of Dune, and its sequels, Mentats of Dune and Navigators of Dune, all of which were written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Goldberg further explains that while many elements are taken from these books, Dune: Prophecy also tells a new story, specifically where the character of Valya is concerned.

Dune: Prophecy executive producer Jordan Goldberg, while at New York Comic Con, explains how the 10,000-year time jump from the movies impacted the show. Developed by Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker, the upcoming Max Dune show is based on the writing of author Frank Herbert. Dune: Prophecy's story takes place many centuries before the time of Paul Atreides as depicted in Denis Villeneuve's two movies, chronicling the creation of the Bene Gesserit order, with a focus on the lives of Harkonnen sisters Valya (Emily Watson) and Tula (Olivia Williams).
Speaking with Screen Rant at Nycc, Goldberg addresses Dune: Prophecy's significant time gap from the two movies, explaining how this affected the approach to the story. Ultimately, he says, this kind of long-form storytelling over millennia is in keeping with franchise tradition as outlined in Herbert's books. Once known as Dune: The Sisterhood, the TV series Dune: Prophecy, which serves as a prequel to the Dune feature films directed by Denis Villeneuve, started filming in November of 2022, then underwent quite a shake-up in 2023 when the director of the first two episodes, Johan Renck (who executive produced and directed all five episodes of the HBO limited series Chernobyl) decided to leave the project over creative issues, then Shirley Henderson (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) – who had been cast as one of the show’s lead characters – followed him out the door. Everything has been worked out since then, with Dune: Prophecy on track for a November premiere on both HBO and the Max streaming service… and now we’ve learned that the promotions will begin at New York Comic Con, where attendees will get to experience both a panel and a fan experience.

HBO has just dropped the second teaser trailer for Dune: Prophecy (via SFFGazette.com), the upcoming small screen prequel which we believe is meant to be a standalone story unconnected to Denis Villeneuve's movies.
It's also been confirmed today that the show will premiere this November, so we're now just waiting for an exact date.
While not quite as visually stunning as those big screen adaptations, the show does have the same look and feel even if it's hard to shake the feeling it might end up being "Dune on a budget." Still, we're intrigued by what we see here and, for fans of Frank Herbert and the Sisterhood of Dune, written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, this story being told on screen is long-overdue.

Last month, Warner Bros. Discovery shifted three of its highest profile Max Originals – Harry Potter, Lanterns and It prequel Welcome To Derry – to become HBO Originals.
The company is now continuing this shift with the move of The Penguin and Dune: Prophecy.
Both shows will now premiere on HBO as well as launching on its Max streaming service.
It is part of a strategy to rebrand its highest profile titles into HBO Originals, giving them a linear airing on the premium cable network as well as a streaming bow.
When the move was originally unveiled in June, the company said it was not sure whether The Penguin, which is set to premiere in September, and Dune: Prophecy would fall under the new branding but this has now been cleared up.

As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO and Max Content shared the first trailer for Dune: Prophecy during today's Warner Bros. Discovery Upfront presentation.
Despite being very much in line with what we've seen from Dune in theaters (albeit with perhaps a few more splashes of colour), the pressure is on this series to live up to Denis Villeneuve's critically acclaimed movies. This teaser doesn't reveal much, but so far, so good based on what we're seeing.
