These days, gay men can arrange sex by a smartphone app as easily as ordering a pizza. But back in the ’90s, when “Plainclothes” takes place, such trysts not only had to be coordinated in person, but could be punished by arrest. Audiences of a certain age and demographic almost certainly remember the risk and fear (not to mention the illicit excitement) back then, when undercover police monitored public “tearooms” for lewd behavior. In writer-director Carmen Emmi’s “we’ve come a long way, baby” debut, the cops take it one step further, luring homosexuals into exposing themselves.
But what if the officer in question was closeted and one of these strangers slipped him his phone number? That’s the intriguing — if credulity-stretching — premise of “Plainclothes,” which casts Tom Blyth (the outlaw star of Epix’s “Billy the Kid”) as Lucas, a second-generation cop with all kinds of identity issues.

Like “Cruising” for the 1990s New Queer Cinema set, Carmen Emmi’s feature debut “Plainclothes” features the most emotionally (and physically) naked performance yet from rising British star Tom Blyth. He plays Lucas, a rookie cop somewhere outside Syracuse assigned to post up in one of those bland, sad Malls of America, hoping to lure men into a toilet stall — and into exposing themselves or more.
This clandestine, bait-and-catch operation was the sort of problematic police procedure that got people like George Michael into trouble for lewd conduct. Here, it forms the basis of a thriller — and one with shades of romance when Lucas’ own secret attraction to men starts overtaking him. And especially in the form of Russell Tovey, sparking a hesitant hook-up and possible romance after Lucas catches Andrew (Tovey) in the bathroom, only to end up lingering too long.
IndieWire shares an exclusive clip for the film in the video above.

One of the best teen drama series is set to make its comeback this month. We're talking about School Spirits, the show that captivated audiences with its mix of mystery, supernatural elements, and relatable high school drama. After an almost two-year wait, the long-awaited second season will finally hit Paramount+, and fans are eager to dive back into the gripping storyline and see what twists and turns await the characters.
Megan and Nate Trinrud, a talented sister and brother duo, created School Spirits. The first season premiered on Paramount+ back in March 2023. But instead of dropping all eight of its episodes at once, the first three were released on the premiere date, followed by one episode a week until its season finale. Paramount+ will follow the same release schedule for the upcoming School Spirits season 2.

The ghosts in Split River High School are scary enough already, but Paramount+ just pulled a move that is far scarier.
The streaming platform announced this morning that School Spirits Season 2 will premiere on Thursday, January 30, with a three-episode drop.
While we’re excited to get some much-needed resolution to the many mysteries School Spirits Season 1 threw our way, the fact that it premieres in just over a week is concerning.
(Paramount+/Screenshot)
Promotion can make or break any project, so announcing a premiere date this close to the debut date doesn’t instill hope that many people will find it.
School Spirits Season 1 had a devoted audience, but it’s hard to tell whether they’ll get the message in time that new episodes are available to devour.
Genre shows are disappearing before our very eyes, and the last thing we need is for School Spirits to face a similar fate.

The first season of Paramount+’s School Spirits ended with Maddie finally uncovering the secret to her death…and it turns out she’s not really dead after all. Janet, a ghost, took over Maddie’s body so she’s stuck in the afterlife, hanging out with others who’ve died at the high school. The official trailer for season two shows Maddie’s friends, both the living and dead, teaming up to figure out how to get Maddie’s body back.
Season two will premiere on January 30, 2025 with the release of the first three episodes. New episodes stream on Thursdays.
Peyton List returns to lead the cast as Maddie Near. Kristian Ventura stars as Simon Elroy, Spencer MacPherson is Xavier Baxter, Kiara Pichardo is Nicole Herrera, Sarah Yarkin is Rhonda, and Nick Pugliese stars as Charley. Rainbow Wedell plays Claire Zomer, Josh Zuckerman is Mr. Martin, and Milo Manheim is Wally Clark.

Brady Corbet's historical epic, The Brutalist, earned rave reviews in 2024, and recently won some key Golden Globe Awards, leaving many to wonder what kind of movie The Brutalist is, and what to watch like it. Premiering at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, The Brutalist follows László Tóth, an architect and Jewish immigrant from Hungary who moves to America, hoping to find success after the devastation of World War II. After a chance meeting with a wealthy businessman, Tóth's luck begins to change. The Brutalist is rising in popularity due to its amazing reviews, but also its shocking runtime.
There are many aspects of watching The Brutalist that make it different from an average blockbuster. First, the movie is 215 minutes long, which is more than 3 1/2 hours. Movies of that length typically boast epic stories that take place over many years, and The Brutalist is no different. Furthermore, this movie...

Marvel Studios' Agatha All Along was originally listed as a miniseries, but the fact that Disney submitted the show in the comedy categories for the upcoming awards season led to speculation that a second batch of episodes might be in development.
Rumors that a second season is in the planning stages soon followed, and while Marvel has yet to make it official, we will almost certainly see Miss Harkness in the MCU again in some capacity.
Star Kathryn Hahn - who lost out on a Best Actress Golden Globe during Sunday's ceremony - was asked about the awards submissions and what they could mean for a second season while speaking to TV Line on the red carpet.
“It does suggest that,” the actress conceded. “I am as in-the-dark as you are. There’s going to be a Vision show, so that could be of a trilogy. But who knows?”

Recent rumors have claimed that Agatha All Along will return for a second batch of episodes, and while Marvel Studios has yet to make it official, the WandaVision spin-off - which was originally tagged as a miniseries - is now listed as "season 1" on Disney+.
We already had a pretty good idea that Marvel had plans to renew the series when Disney submitted it in the comedy categories for the upcoming awards season (star Kathryn Hahn was recently nominated for a Golden Globe), since the Television Academy’s criteria for limited series state: “The program must tell a complete, non-recurring story and not have an ongoing storyline or main characters in subsequent seasons.”
The season finale concluded with Agatha Harkness (Hahn) sacrificing herself to save Billy Maximoff (Joe Locke) by planting a kiss on her former lover Rio Vidal, aka Death (Aubrey Plaza).

In episode 8 of Before, Eli sort of proved that he and Noah were “connected” because the child psychologist had a random nosebleed right when Noah smashed his face into a window to protest his shift from St. Benedict’s to a facility in Ithaca. Maybe that little stunt stalled the authorities, but it certainly didn’t stop Eli from taking a trip to the farmhouse that Noah kept referencing in all his artwork. Apparently, that was the last place that Benjamin and Lynn had gone to prior to his sudden death. Eli also met his end at that farmhouse, after witnessing a series of disjointed visuals, but since Cleo was with him, she decided to dial 911 and get the elderly child psychologist to a hospital. It wasn’t clear if the infected wound that he had sustained while throwing a temper tantrum in his house in the first episode was...

Agatha All Along Star Kathryn Hahn On Possible MCU Return: "This Was A Beautiful Way To Say Goodbye"
The season finale of Agatha All Along concluded with Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) sacrificing herself to save Billy Maximoff (Joe Locke) by planting a kiss on her former lover Rio Vidal, aka Death (Aubrey Plaza).
Of course, dying in the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn't necessarily mean the end of the road - especially for a powerful witch.
In the final moments of the episode, Harkness returns in spirit form and accompanies Wiccan on his quest to locate his brother Tommy. Showrunner Jac Schaeffer has already hinted at future plans for these characters, but if Hahn didn't get the chance to reprise her role, it sounds like she'd be very happy with her ghostly send-off.
“Even though obviously now Billy/Wiccan is not her son, there is some sort of hope for her that she’s able to maybe do for him what she couldn’t do for Nicky. I think...

Stephen King shares his praise for a new Apple TV+ thriller, matching the audience's sentiment. Apple TV+ has been on a run of consistently releasing new original shows over the past few years, with the genre frequently falling into the thriller category. Oftentimes, those thrillers will have a sci-bent, with Silo, Dark Matter, and Severance. But the preference for tense stories also extends beyond the science fiction realm.
Lady in the Lake, led by Natalie Portman, was a murder mystery presented as a thriller. The same is true for The Crowded Room, starring Tom Holland and Amanda Seyfried, which was a crime drama that often veered into the direction of a paranoid and shaky narrative with an unreliable protagonist at the center. One of the newest thrillers from the streamer continues the trend, including another big actor, though responses have been split.

Artist Daniel Selon has taken to Instagram to share some of his concept art for Aubrey Plaza's Rio Vidal in the outfit she wore during her fight with Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) towards the end of the series premiere of Marvel Studios' Agatha All Along.
This design isn't a million miles away from the costume that made it to the screen, but there are a few subtle diffrences, with the hood pulled back to show more of Rio's hair and the sash slightly higher on her chest. The final look also reveals more of the character's ribs.
"This look needed to keep Rio’s identity mysterious and also show her as a formidable force (and also be sexy powerful)," writes Selon. "We needed to believe that what she’s wearing could exist in the real contemporary world but also hint at an otherworldly power. I turned to my...

One of the best running gags in My Old Ass is Spencers inexplicable obsession with Saoirse Ronan, but its unclear exactly why he loves the Lady Bird star so much. My Old Ass (2024) succeeds as a time travel movie for the same reason that many classics in the subgenre have worked so successfully; it understands that time travel itself is a mechanism used to create interesting plot scenarios, regardless of whether or not the logic of the science makes any actual sense. “Back to the Future” works because the concept of a teenager meeting his parents when they were young is brilliant; similarly, the concept of reliving the same day over and over again is what makes “Groundhog Day” fun, even though it never really offers an explanation for why this is happening.
“My Old Ass” won’t be heralded in the same breath as “Back to the Future” or “Groundhog Day,” but it does find an inventive way of showing the path the inherent struggles with growing older and accepting uncomfortable truths about adulthood. At the center of Megan Park...

Christmas movies are a thing on their own. They tend to be heartwarming dramedies akin to slice-of-life movies that make us emotional but also offer us a sense of warmth and comfort. Centred around the year-end festival, these movies often speak about the spirit of togetherness and are drenched in a cosy, celebratory spirit of the festival. From Frank Capra’s ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ to Alexander Payne’s ‘The Holdovers’, we have seen the festival bringing people together, literally or emotionally. Tyler Taormina’s ‘Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point’ is the latest, charming addition to this list that uses its big ensemble to offer a time capsule to a a bygone era.

Intimate, disparate moments of an annual holiday tradition are artfully portrayed in director Tyler Taormina’s latest, the Long Island-set Christmas Eve In Miller’s Point. The audience ostensibly tags along to a chaotic yuletide party hosted by the matriarch of the Balsano family, which is attended by every conceivable far-flung relative.

Filmmaker Tyler Taormina quickly fell in love with IFC Films’ idea for how to market his merry-and-bright feature. The indie distributor’s trailer for “Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point” plays as a full-on throwback to how holiday season comedies used to be advertised, complete with baby boomer doo-wop, a long list of grinning cast members and a warm narrator promising that, “It’s more than a holiday. It’s a gift for the whole family.” But the nostalgic packaging came with an unforeseen side effect.
“A lot of the people online are like, ‘Oh, I thought it was a horror movie.’ It was a very common reaction that was not at all thought of,” Taormina shares. “Earnest nostalgia is not able to be detected. The irony is expected. It bummed me out.”

It was the day after Halloween, and at The Grove in Los Angeles, Christmas decorations had already been rolled out and strung up. It was fitting for the interview I was about to have with filmmaker and musician Tyler Taormina, who was in between travels for his most recent work, “Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point,” but rather than sit outside and enjoy the ambience, I asked if he’d like to head to Barnes & Noble for the first day of their annual November Criterion Collection sale. Seeing his eyes light up with excitement, I realized I had my answer.
Taormina and I were a few years apart at Emerson College in Boston, and though we’d never met, I found an unmistakable familiarity with him as we started to chat and look through Blu-rays and DVDs. Perhaps it resulted from being shaped at the same institution, or maybe...

In Agatha All Along's finale, we learned more about Agatha Harkness' past and the truth about her son, Nicky (better known to comic book fans as Nicholas Scratch).
Just as Agatha was about to give birth, Death showed up to claim the child; however, the witch pleaded for more time and seemingly bought that by killing witches. On the one night - at Nicky's prompting - that she didn't, Death finally came for him and Agatha, ashamed of her actions, spent hundreds of years murdering her fellow magic-users on the "Witches' Road" to avoid being reunited with the boy.
Much has been said about who his father could be and, in a new interview, Agatha All Along showrunner Jac Schaeffer dropped her biggest hint yet that Rio Vidal/Death conceived the child with the show's title character.
"I will say [Laughs] that when we were casting sometimes we were like, 'Does that kid look like Rio?...

Agatha All Along concluded with a two-episode finale last week, and we recently asked you to vote so we could determine what Cbm's readers made of the WandaVision spin-off.
The results are now in, and you might be surprised by the outcome!
2239 of you voted, and a whopping 42% (947) went with the most positive option, "Excellent." 27% (615) of you felt it was "Very Good," 15% (329) went with "Good," and only 9% (191) clicked on the most negative choice, "Awful."
It's fair to say that Agatha All Along wasn't exactly the most anticipated Disney+ Marvel series, but the show quickly established itself as a must-watch for many fans. A second season has not been announced, but the fact that Disney has submitted the show in the comedy categories for the upcoming awards season has led to speculation that Marvel might be planning to continue the story.

I see Christmas Eve in Miller's Point as a combination of two storytelling instincts, the first of which is, unsurprisingly, the Christmas movie. This is one of those not just set around the holiday, but about it, and scenes of family togetherness (both fuzzy and prickly) resonate beyond their moment. The other, however, is the snapshot ensemble movie, in which the moment is everything. We're with these people for one night of their lives, and the point is just to be with them, share this experience, and find meaning wherever we decide to see it.

Though the recent two-episode finale of Agatha All Along was seen as a fairly satisfying conclusion by a lot of viewers, some were left a little disappointed by the lack of any major reveals or cameos, and episode 9 included a plot twist that definitely didn't work for everyone.
As we reported prior to the finale, it was revealed that the Witches' Road was never actually real... until it was! It turns out that the Ballad of the Witches' Road was something Agatha and her son Nicholas Scratch made up to pass the time, before Harkness began to use the song to lure unsuspecting witches to her so she could steal their power.
This is exactly what Agatha was planning to do with the makeshift coven she assembled in the series premiere, but Billy Maximoff used his vast untapped abilities to shape a brand-new reality, essentially creating the Road and every...

Unlike the majority of Marvel Studios movies and shows, Agatha All Along did not feature a post-credits scene after the recent two-episode finale.
Showrunner Jac Schaeffer has confirmed that she did write "a number of post-credit scenes," which she has "done on every Marvel project [she's] ever worked on," but "ultimately, it was a Marvel decision not to have a tag on this show."
Now, scooper Mttsh has shared some details on two of the scrapped stingers, and, honestly, they don't sound particularly exciting.
The first would reportedly have caught up with Jennifer Kale as she searches for the doctor who she initially believed to be responsible for taking her powers, while the second saw Death follow Wiccan and Ghost Agatha into the portal as they embark on their quest to find Tommy Maximoff.
One of them had Jennifer Kale looking for the doctor who is still alive somehow https://t.

Before Agatha All Along launched on Disney+, many people repeatedly questioned why the show was happening and accused it of being "woke" for featuring female and gay leads. As a result, the majority of MCU fans braced themselves for another round of The Acolyte-style review-bombing.
For the most part, it never came; however, attempts were made as the show boasted a surprisingly low Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes the day before it premiered.
Week after week, Agatha All Along has proven itself a worthy successor to WandaVision and a story that was very much worth telling. That's evident from the fact it has the best Audience Score for any Phase 5 TV show!
Here's how Marvel Studios' small screen offerings compare from this latest chapter in the Multiverse Saga:
Secret Invasion - 44%
Loki Season 2 - 82%
What If...? Season 2 - 65%

The premiere of Agatha All Along began with "Detective Agnes" discovering Wanda Maximoff's dead body, and even though we never saw her face, a lot of fans expected Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch to show up in the recent finale.
The former Avenger never appeared, and we only got a vague update on her current MCU status (she's dead... unless she isn't?), and it sounds like enlisting Olsen for a cameo was never a real possibility.
While speaking to THR, showrunner Jac Schaeffer explained why she felt that bringing Wanda back for the finale would have ended up being detrimental to Agatha's story.
"It wasn’t really a for-real conversation, and to speak plainly, it’s a larger conversation of casting, logistics, availability, and budget. Also, to me, on a creative level, it didn’t feel fair to the character of Agatha. This is her story, and the idea...

Disney+ has waved its magic wand to place “Agatha” in the comedy category.
Under the banner of Marvel Television Studios, the hit new spin-off series “Agatha All Along,” starring Kathryn Hahn, will be submitted in the comedy categories for the upcoming awards season, including the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and next year’s Emmy race, Variety has learned exclusively. The move aligns “Agatha” in a competitive lineup, as it will face acclaimed comedies like ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” FX’s “The Bear” and HBO/Max’s “Hacks.”
This decision places Hahn in the running against heavyweights such as Jean Smart, Quinta Brunson, and Ayo Edebiri — who have each won the TV comedy actress race for their respective shows over the past three years. For Hahn, who’s never been nominated for a Globe, a mention could be pivotal as she seeks to make a mark at next year’s Emmys ceremony.

Agatha All Along proved to be a satisfying journey for fans, though the absence of characters like Mephisto, Speed (who was at least hinted at for a future story), and Hulkling did disappoint some.
There's plenty of time for them to appear in future stories, of course, and showrunner Jac Schaeffer has now confirmed there were once plans for Teddy Altman to appear in the WandaVision follow-up.
In fact, William Kaplan/Billy Maximoff's boyfriend, Eddie (Miles Gutierrez-Riley), was going to be called Teddy! Had that happened, we'd imagine his true identity as a Kree/Skrull hybrid would have been saved for a post-credits scene or something along those lines.
"There were early conversations [about Hulkling]," Schaeffer tells Entertainment Weekly. "[Eddie] was originally called Teddy because we were looking at the artwork and thinking about that. That was a Marvel decision to not have him be Hulkling for the purposes of our show."

Agatha All Along wrapped up its first (and likely only) season this week, and showrunner Jac Schaeffer has been sharing some interesting details about certain things that didn't make the cut.
During an in-depth chat with The Ringer-Verse, Schaeffer revealed that she originally wanted to bring back a surprising character from She-Hulk: Attorney at Law to be a part of Agatha's makeshift coven.
“[We wanted] to get Madisynn on the Witches’ Road, but it just didn’t work. It was shoehorning."
As divisive as She-Hulk proved to be, most would likely agree that the episode featuring the debut of Madisynn King was a lot of fun.

Agtaha All Along Finale Spoiler Stills Released As Showrunner Reveals Marvel's Scarlet Witch Mandate
Heading into Agatha All Along, we'd hoped that the series might clear up the Scarlet Witch's MCU status. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness strongly hinted that the Avenger died, though a red flash before Mount Wundagore collapsed pointed to her escaping that fate.
The WandaVision follow-up has established that Wanda Maximoff is "gone" but stopped short of revealing whether she's dead or alive.
Talking to Deadline, showrunner Jac Schaeffer said, "It’s my opinion - and these stories will move ahead, and who knows what it will be - it’s my opinion that Agatha does not know. And yeah, it’s my opinion that Rio does. I think the word 'gone' is important. I was instructed to use the word 'gone.'"

It's probably fair to say that Agatha All Along wasn't one of the more highly-anticipated MCU shows to be announced for the Disney+ streaming service.
The prospect of a WandaVision spin-off focusing on scene-stealing witch Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) may have seemed like a more appealing idea a few years ago, but even then, a lot of fans wondered what the point of a series revolving around this character was when there are better-known and more popular Marvel Comics heroes and villains that have yet to be given the spotlight.
Even so, the first two episodes proved to be surprisingly popular, and based on critical (the show's Rotten Tomatoes score has now gone from 67% to 83%) and audience responses, many would seem to agree that the series only increased in quality as it went on.

As you may recall, it's previously been reported that Agatha All Along completed its scheduled reshoots in only one day. With the WandaVision spin-off, Marvel Studios may have finally cracked TV, delivering a satisfying beginning, middle, and end, all with an appropriate budget thanks to practical sets and an effective use of VFX.
Today, scooper @MyTimeToShineH brings word about some of the changes Marvel Television made to Agatha All Along during those reshoots and production in general.
They start by confirming that the Scarlet Witch was never in the series, so that didn't change (Alex Perez has also acknowledged that he was way off base with the claim Wanda Maximoff would be found in a dormant state at the end of the Witches' Road).
Original plans called for Agatha Harkness to ask Death to "retire" her Rio Vidal form, prompting the powerful entity to respond, "But this is the me you fell in love with.

They start by confirming that the Scarlet Witch was never in the series, so that didn't change (Alex Perez has also acknowledged that he was way off base with the claim Wanda Maximoff would be found in a dormant state at the end of the Witches' Road).

Aubrey Plaza's MCU debut as Rio Vidal in Agatha All Along was celebrated by fans. However, the revelation that she's Death has been hailed as one of Marvel Studios' best casting decisions ever.
Now, Emmy-nominated Makeup Artist Erin LeBre has revealed just how much of the Death design we saw in the two-episode finale was practical. As you can see below, little in the way of VFX was needed to bring this character to life and we're hoping she keeps this look during any future appearances.
Death may be a one-and-done for the MCU, though we'd be shocked if she doesn't show her face in other supernatural projects heading our way when the Multiverse Saga concludes.
For many, the hope is that she might be allied with Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, becoming an ally to him similar to how Thanos served her in the comic books.

In last night's two-episode finale of Agatha All Along - you can read our in-depth recap here - we were treated to some huge revelations and surprises. Of course, among the biggest were those comic-accurate costumes.
Firstly, Billy Maximoff emerges from the Witches' Road with full control of his powers and suits up as Wiccan. Wearing a costume that's almost identical to his look on the page, Billy looked phenomenal in action, particularly with a crown - in place of a headband - that links him to his mother, the Scarlet Witch.
It didn't end with Billy, though. With Death unleashed, the true face of "Rio Vidal" is finally revealed and Marvel Studios has translated this character from the page to screen in a really exciting way.
There have been rumblings online we'll see her again, so the hope now is that she might serve as an ally to Robert Downey Jr....

Change can be difficult to process no matter how old we are. It can be especially paralyzing during our adolescence when we experience so many things for the first time. We change schools, part ways with our old friends, and try to find a new path. All these things change us in some ways. Hannah Peterson’s “The Graduates” explores the same overwhelming pressure through the eyes of high school students processing a similar sense of transition. Simultaneously, it presents them processing a recent tragedy and how their journeys have more in common than one may assume.
The script mainly follows Genevieve (Mina Sundwall), a young high-school student on her way to graduation. Her close friend, Ben (Alex R. Hibbert) suddenly returns from his school elsewhere, hoping to finish his course remotely before their college. He gets his old part-time job back and seems eager to gain something he has lost during his absence.
