Ken Burns achieved a milestone this month with his two-part four-hour “Leonardo da Vinci” documentary: It’s the first time he’s ever made a film about a non-American subject.
In a new interview with NY1 show “The Rush Hour,” Burns talked a bit about how much of a kinship he feels with Leonardo. Despite the artist and scientist living 500 hundred years ago, he’s a startlingly contemporary figure. In fact, Burns thinks he and Leonardo would share a profession if Leonardo was alive and working today.
“The scary thing is, I think he’d be a filmmaker,” Burns said. “You look at the last supper, and you think it’s a frozen moment. It’s not. It’s a frozen six or seven moments. And there seems to be movement implicit in some of the paintings, including ‘The Mona Lisa’ and ‘The Virgin in the Rocks’ and ‘The Virgin...

Lots of folks trace the origins of cinema to Eadweard Muybridge’s timed sequence photography or William Kennedy Dickson’s kinetoscope, but Ken Burns makes a convincing case that the true spirit of filmmaking starts with Leonardo Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.”
Burns and co-directors Sarah Burns and David McMahon broke out every tool in their documentary belt in order to demonstrate how Da Vinci brought emotion and intention to his painting in “Leonardo Da Vinci.” And the filmmaking in this two-part PBS series really does feel akin to the dynamism of Da Vinci’s work, within a documentary framework.
Split screens between the usual archival material and modern photography of bodies, animals, and objects in motion act as visual proof of the lateral connections Da Vinci saw between everything. “There’s a huge explosion of technique here. But the process is the same as every film I’ve ever worked on,...

It’s a match made in heaven the good place.
Emmy winner Ted Danson reunites with creator Mike Schur for “A Man on the Inside,” a new Netflix comedy about a retired engineering professor who, with a little prodding from his daughter (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) to start living his life again following the death of his wife, goes undercover at a posh retirement home after answering a classified ad. Across eight episodes (all streaming now), Charles attempts to discover what happened to a cherished family heirloom; what he finds instead is a new lease on life, as he quickly endears himself to everyone around him, from his fellow residents to the retirement home’s congenial staff.
Inspired by the Oscar-nominated documentary “The Mole Agent,” the series joins critically acclaimed comedies like “Hacks” and “Only Murders in the Building” in putting seniors at the forefront of their stories, reminding us that...

More than 500 years after his death, the works of Leonardo da Vinci have never been more ubiquitous. “Mona Lisa” just got her own Lego set, and recently played a central role in Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.” A controversial allusion to his famed “The Last Supper” during this summer’s Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony reacquainted the masses with the iconic image’s origins, and his “Vitruvian Man” is still a staple on the walls of anatomy classrooms across the globe.
The Italian Renaissance painter and intellectual, who produced only around 20 paintings in his lifetime, was the epitome of a man ahead of his time. He also happens to be exactly the kind of posthumously appreciated figure about which Ken Burns has spent his career making seminal documentary films. Yet, more so than any of his previous subjects, the Emmy-winning filmmaker thinks da Vinci could have mastered the modern day.

PBS’ new two-part, four-hour Leonardo da Vinci probably won’t redefine the identity of Ken Burns, renowned as a documentary chronicler of all things Americana.
But it does find the director, working with frequent collaborators Sarah Burns and David McMahon, in markedly different terrain, both historically and culturally. More than that, Leonardo da Vinci (we’ll see how many times I write Leonardo DiCaprio as the title here) finds the team working with a very different visual and rhetorical approach, making a project that isn’t really enlightening about da Vinci as a person, but explores the polymath’s intellectual and artistic processes in a way that’s effectively cumulative and often fascinating.
It remains my consistent feeling that Burns and company are better the more primary source interview subjects they have. It’s why I love Baseball, why I think The Dust Bowl is underrated and why I prefer...

Unless you’re a major studio or willing to pay for a rent-spiked ski lodge––and even then––few festivals ring more exclusive than Telluride, which has the distinction / misfortune of firing the starting gun for fall festivals and that ever-deleterious phenomenon we call “Oscar buzz.” Their 2024 lineup nevertheless features some films of note: Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson’s Rumours; Alain Guiraudie’s Misericordia; Payal Kapadia’s All That We Imagine as Light; Sean Baker’s Anora; and Alfonso Cuarón’s Apple series Disclaimer.
On a repertory end, Kenneth Lonergan’s been anointed this year’s Guest Director and has programmed the following: Arch of Triumph, Barry Lyndon, Doctor Zhivago, Grand Hotel, and My Darling Clementine. It’s hard to believe that Ken Burns has had a rule for what subject matter he takes on, given that the diversity of his work ranges from “The Civil War” and “Vietnam” to “Baseball” and “Jazz.” But he is finally breaking through that limitation — sort of.
Burns’s latest two-part documentary on Leonard da Vinci, a collaboration with his daughter Sarah Burns and son-in-law David McMahon, is his first non-American subject and has to be by default; the United States wouldn’t be founded for more than 250 years after da Vinci’s death in 1519. But Burns is claiming the Italian polymath for America, anyway, or at least he did so with tongue in cheek at his talk, “In Their Shoes with Ken Burns,” given at the Nantucket Film Festival, which concludes June 24.
“The thing that was my balm throughout the whole [filmmaking] period is that a contemporary of Leonardo’s in Florence was Amerigo Vespucci,...

Ken Burns attended the 29th annual Nantucket Film Festival, which concludes Sunday, to give audiences a glimpse of his latest PBS documentary “Leonardo da Vinci.” The two-part, four-hour doc — directed by Burns, his daughter Sarah Burns and his son-in-law David McMahon — explores the life and work of the 15th-century polymath. “Leonardo da Vinci,” which begins airing in November, marks the first project Burns has directed that unfolds entirely outside the continental United States.
Although his work on “Leonardo da Vinci” is done, Burns has projects lined up through 2029. Currently, the director is working on several documentaries, including ones on Lyndon B. Johnson, the American Revolution and Barack Obama.
Variety spoke with Burns about making a doc not based in American history, his views on directing films about contemporary topics and why history never repeats itself.

The Speculation Around Catherine Reitman’s Unique Smile
Catherine Reitman certainly does have a unique smile, with a curved upper lip that dips inward on each side and accentuates her ultra-white teeth.

It’s a semi-annual tradition during the PBS executive session at the Television Critics Assn.: Asking president/CEO Paula Kerger about the state of funding for the public broadcaster. And so it went on Monday, during the public broadcaster’s portion of the winter 2024 press tour — and despite the ongoing gridlock in Washington, Kerger said things, at least for now, are going “Ok.”
“We are advanced funded, and that we always have been,” Kerger told reporters. “And the idea behind it is that you need to know that when you finish a project, you’re going to actually have the funds for it. So we we actually know what our funding is right now. Now, that’s not to say someone can come in and try to rescind some of the funding, and that happened to us some years back.”

Bill Hader insists he never had any long range plans for “Barry’s” storylines.
At the Los Angeles premiere of the HBO series’ fourth and final season on Sunday, Hader told Variety when he first began the process of developing and pitching “Barry” seven years ago, he had “no idea where the series was going to end up.”
In fact, he says, Season 4 is “totally different” than his original plans. As the series wrapped, Hader revealed those final days were “very bittersweet,” but everyone was “also so tired, we were exhausted,” he said, laughing.
“Barry’s” fourth season picks up with Barry in prison after killing Janice (Paula Newsome), his mentor Gene Cousineau’s (Henry Winkler) girlfriend, in Season 1. “I had some sense of where we were headed,” said Sarah Goldberg, who plays Sally. “But I was very surprised by all the details on the way there.”

On April 16, HBO launches the fourth and final season of its hit comedy series “Barry.” Bill Hader executive produces, directs, writes and stars in the nine-time Emmy-winning show. In the season opener we see Barry Berkman (Hader) call up his acting teacher, Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler), from prison. Even though Gene is responsible for Barry’s arrest, it’s his forgiveness the sociopathic killer seeks first.
Season 4 kicks off with rave reviews, holding fresh at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics’ consensus reads, “What began as a macabre comedy is now close to completely shorn of genuine mirth, but Bill Hader’s masterful indictment of stardom closes the curtain with one hell of an encore.” The ensemble cast includes Anthony Carrigan, Sarah Burns, Sarah Goldberg and Stephen Root. Dilday’s participation in the project will be as an independent filmmaker – in other words, separate from her role as executive director of American Documentary and executive producer of AmDoc’s PBS series Pov and World Channel’s America ReFramed.
Emancipation to Exodus (wt) explores the African American struggle for freedom and opportunity “from the Civil War and end of slavery, through Reconstruction and the start of the Great Migration out of the south that began in the early 20th century,” according to a release about the film.

A few months ago, actor Anthony Carrigan – who plays NoHo Hank on the HBO dark comedy crime series Barry – said that season 4 would be the show’s final season. We didn’t doubt Carrigan, but we still needed HBO to officially confirm that Barry was wrapping up… and now that confirmation has come. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that HBO announced the eight episode fourth season of Barry is the end.
Star Bill Hader, who created Barry with Alec Berg, provided the following statement: “It’s been an amazing journey making this show, and it’s bittersweet that the story has come to its natural conclusion.“
HBO’s Amy Gravitt added: “After three masterful seasons of Barry, we are eager for viewers to see the powerful, complex and hilarious conclusion to Barry Berkman’s story. It has been a pleasure working with this immensely talented team including Bill Hader,...

Barry's reign of terror on HBO is coming to a close.
According to Variety, the series will conclude with its fourth season on the premium cabler.
The news has been heavily rumored for months and is now official. The final season premieres on April 16.
Co-creators Bill Hader and Alec Berg decided that the show would end with Season 4 when they were writing the fourth season.
"It was very much in the writing and the storytelling," Hader told the outlet of the decision.
"I mean, a lot of people after last season were like, 'Why are you doing another season? It should have just ended.'"
"But to me, there are still so many questions with the other characters, and with Barry — and there's so many things unsaid."
"What happens in Season 4 is structurally radical in some ways, but it made sense for what I think the characters needed to go through,...

Although he won Emmys in 2018 and 2019 for his work on “Barry,” Bill Hader was unfortunately kept from repeating his success at the SAG Awards by Tony Shalhoub and his “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” cast mates. Following a pandemic-induced three-year hiatus, Hader has now received his third pair of comedy actor and ensemble SAG Award nominations for the HBO series. Since Shalhoub was doubly overlooked this time and reigning back-to-back comedy actor champ Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”) is out of contention, Hader’s path to individual victory is clearer than ever.

"Barry" is one of the best shows on HBO right now. Although the series has competed at the Primetime Emmy Awards in the comedy categories, it's hard to call "Barry" a "comedy" anymore. The dark character study of a truly demented man may have a few outrageously funny moments, but it's also very bleak in its worldview. On the plus side, it's allowed Bill Hader to show his true dramatic range, with a performance that is both terrifying and sympathetic.
"Barry" is hardly the first dark comedy about an assassin, but unlike others, it's not a show that pulls its punches. The series pokes fun at Hollywood, the theater industry, and actors' volatile and sometimes dramatic nature, but the satire doesn't detract from the gravity of the material. If anything, it makes everything else hit even harder — and there's no better example than how each of the characters have grown and changed.

Thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, TV fans have gotten quite used to lengthy delays between seasons of their favorite shows. But even with that in mind, the wait for Barry season 3 has been a particularly excruciating one. The season 2 finale of HBO’s beloved dark comedy concluded with quite a cruel cliffhanger.

Ken Burns is scared about the future of America.
“I’m very anxious,” Burns admits. “I want my country to survive. I want to look back on all of this and go, ‘Wow, that was tough, but we made it through’ — just the way my parents and my grandparents talked to me about the Depression. I want to have this in our rearview mirror, but I don’t think that will happen for a while.”
His fear, palpable and hovering around the edges of many of the comments he makes during a long, discursive interview with Variety on a chilly January afternoon, is terrifying. After all, Burns knows of what he speaks. Over four decades and 40 documentaries, he has made the American experience his great artistic endeavor. He’s chronicled the construction of civic wonders like the Brooklyn Bridge, as well as the creation and popularization of distinctly American art...

When the HBO series “Barry” returns for Season 3, the show will benefit from the response to the breakout Season 2 episode “ronny/lily.” So revealed co-creator and executive producer Alec Berg during the show’s TCA panel on Wednesday.
“I think the response to that episode was so strong that it did open our minds a little bit to being more ambitious and expanding the scope and kind of pushing the show into new places,” Berg said in reference to the Season 2 episode that Hader co-wrote and directed. The story, which was something of a bottle episode, followed hitman Barry (played by Hader) tussling with a Taekwondo master and his daughter throughout the episode.
Hader won a Director’s Guild of America award for helming the episode and returns to the director’s chair for Season 3, but while he acknowledges that “ronny/lily” was a bit left-of-center for the series, he...

HBO‘s Emmy-winning dark comedy Barry will premiere its long-awaited third season on April 24 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt. Season 3 was delayed due to Covid-19.
In the eight-episode new season, Barry (Bill Hader) is desperate to leave his violent past behind in favor of his newfound passion. But things will get messy as he attempts to untangle himself from the world of contract killing and fully immerse himself in acting.
While Barry has eliminated many of the external factors that pushed him towards violence, he soon discovers they weren’t the only forces at play. What is it about his own psyche that led him to become a killer in the first place? Season 3 finds Barry and the other characters trying to make the right choice.
“There’s a lot left to explore,” Hader said during the show’s Ctam panel on Tuesday. “His own boneheaded way of trying to...

“Barry” fans, we have good news: The Emmy-winning black comedy series starring and co-created by Bill Hader finally has a premiere date. The third season of “Barry” will premiere on HBO Sunday, April 24 at 10:00 p.m. Et/Pt.
Season 2 launched all the way back in March, 2019 — blame Covid-19 for the three-year delay — so for those of you needing a quick catch up: Hader plays Barry Berkman, a contract killer who, after traveling to Los Angeles for a job, becomes fixated on acting as a way to escape that life of violence and murder. Things don’t work out as he hoped however, as the obligations of his murder career, not to mention Barry’s broken psyche, keep interfering with his attempt at a new start.
“Barry” also stars Stephen Root (“Perry Mason”) as Monroe Fuches, Barry’s former handler-turned enemy; Sarah Goldberg (“Hindsight”) as Sally, Barry’s girlfriend in...
