Ken Burns achieved a milestone this month with his two-part four-hour “Leonardo da Vinci” documentary: It’s the first time he’s ever made a film about a non-American subject.

In a new interview with NY1 show “The Rush Hour,” Burns talked a bit about how much of a kinship he feels with Leonardo. Despite the artist and scientist living 500 hundred years ago, he’s a startlingly contemporary figure. In fact, Burns thinks he and Leonardo would share a profession if Leonardo was alive and working today.

More than 500 years after his death, the works of Leonardo da Vinci have never been more ubiquitous. “Mona Lisa” just got her own Lego set, and recently played a central role in Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.” A controversial allusion to his famed “The Last Supper” during this summer’s Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony reacquainted the masses with the iconic image’s origins, and his “Vitruvian Man” is still a staple on the walls of anatomy classrooms across the globe.

The Italian Renaissance painter and intellectual, who produced only around 20 paintings in his lifetime, was the epitome of a man ahead of his time. He also happens to be exactly the kind of posthumously appreciated figure about which Ken Burns has spent his career making seminal documentary films. Yet, more so than any of his previous subjects, the Emmy-winning filmmaker thinks da Vinci could have mastered the modern day.

PBS’ new two-part, four-hour Leonardo da Vinci probably won’t redefine the identity of Ken Burns, renowned as a documentary chronicler of all things Americana.

But it does find the director, working with frequent collaborators Sarah Burns and David McMahon, in markedly different terrain, both historically and culturally. More than that, Leonardo da Vinci (we’ll see how many times I write Leonardo DiCaprio as the title here) finds the team working with a very different visual and rhetorical approach, making a project that isn’t really enlightening about da Vinci as a person, but explores the polymath’s intellectual and artistic processes in a way that’s effectively cumulative and often fascinating.

The 51st Telluride Film Festival announced its lineup just days ahead of the festival’s opening on Friday, August 30, 2024. The festival, which runs through Monday, September 2nd, will include the world premieres of Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night, Edward Berger’s Conclave, and Malcolm Washington’s The Piano Lesson.

This year’s festival includes 60 feature films, shorts, and revival programs.

The world premieres of “The Piano Lesson,” “Conclave” and “Saturday Night” will take place at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival, which begins on Friday in the Colorado mountain town.

“The Piano Lesson” is an August Wilson adaptation directed by Malcolm Washington and starring Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington; it will be released by Netflix. “Conclave” is a Focus Features drama set admidst the election of a new pope, and the first film for German director Edward Berger since his Oscar-winning “All Quiet on the Western Front.” And Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night,” a Sony release, tells the story of the first episode of the long-running comedy series “Saturday Night Live.”

Exclusive: Good Deed Entertainment has acquired world rights to the romantic comedy Advanced Chemistry, starring Samba Schutte (Our Flag Means Death), Chaunté Wayans (Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready), Sarah Burns (Barry), Kiran Deol (Sunnyside), Iqbal Theba (Glee) and T’Keyah Crystal Keymah (That’s So Raven).

It’s hard to believe that Ken Burns has had a rule for what subject matter he takes on, given that the diversity of his work ranges from “The Civil War” and “Vietnam” to “Baseball” and “Jazz.” But he is finally breaking through that limitation — sort of.

Burns’s latest two-part documentary on Leonard da Vinci, a collaboration with his daughter Sarah Burns and son-in-law David McMahon, is his first non-American subject and has to be by default; the United States wouldn’t be founded for more than 250 years after da Vinci’s death in 1519. But Burns is claiming the Italian polymath for America, anyway, or at least he did so with tongue in cheek at his talk, “In Their Shoes with Ken Burns,” given at the Nantucket Film Festival, which concludes June 24.

Ken Burns attended the 29th annual Nantucket Film Festival, which concludes Sunday, to give audiences a glimpse of his latest PBS documentary “Leonardo da Vinci.” The two-part, four-hour doc — directed by Burns, his daughter Sarah Burns and his son-in-law David McMahon — explores the life and work of the 15th-century polymath. “Leonardo da Vinci,” which begins airing in November, marks the first project Burns has directed that unfolds entirely outside the continental United States.

Although his work on “Leonardo da Vinci” is done, Burns has projects lined up through 2029. Currently, the director is working on several documentaries, including ones on Lyndon B. Johnson, the American Revolution and Barack Obama.

Variety spoke with Burns about making a doc not based in American history, his views on directing films about contemporary topics and why history never repeats itself.

Ken Burns’ two-part, four-hour documentary Leonardo da Vinci is set to air on November 18-19 from 8-10 p.m. Et on PBS. The project, co-directed with Sarah Burns and Dave McMahon, is Burns’ first non-American subject.

The film explores the life and work of the 15th century artist and how he influenced and inspired future generations. The musician and composer Caroline Shaw recorded original music for the film performed by Attacca Quartet, Sō Percussion and Roomful of Teeth. The voice of da Vinci is read by Italian actor Adriano Giannini. Keith David serves as the film’s narrator.

Bill Hader insists he never had any long range plans for “Barry’s” storylines.

At the Los Angeles premiere of the HBO series’ fourth and final season on Sunday, Hader told Variety when he first began the process of developing and pitching “Barry” seven years ago, he had “no idea where the series was going to end up.”

In fact, he says, Season 4 is “totally different” than his original plans. As the series wrapped, Hader revealed those final days were “very bittersweet,” but everyone was “also so tired, we were exhausted,” he said, laughing.

Exclusive: Emmy-winning filmmaker Erika Dilday is joining Ken Burns, Sarah Burns, and David McMahon as co-director and co-producer of the upcoming documentary film Emancipation to Exodus (working title). It’s a long-term commitment – the film about a critical period in the African American experience isn’t expected to air on PBS until 2027.

Dilday’s participation in the project will be as an independent filmmaker – in other words, separate from her role as executive director of American Documentary and executive producer of AmDoc’s PBS series Pov and World Channel’s America ReFramed.

Emancipation to Exodus (wt) explores the African American struggle for freedom and opportunity “from the Civil War and end of slavery, through Reconstruction and the start of the Great Migration out of the south that began in the early 20th century,” according to a release about the film.

A few months ago, actor Anthony Carrigan – who plays NoHo Hank on the HBO dark comedy crime series Barry – said that season 4 would be the show’s final season. We didn’t doubt Carrigan, but we still needed HBO to officially confirm that Barry was wrapping up… and now that confirmation has come. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that HBO announced the eight episode fourth season of Barry is the end.

Barry's reign of terror on HBO is coming to a close.

According to Variety, the series will conclude with its fourth season on the premium cabler.

The news has been heavily rumored for months and is now official. The final season premieres on April 16.

Co-creators Bill Hader and Alec Berg decided that the show would end with Season 4 when they were writing the fourth season.

"It was very much in the writing and the storytelling," Hader told the outlet of the decision.

"I mean, a lot of people after last season were like, 'Why are you doing another season? It should have just ended.'"

"But to me, there are still so many questions with the other characters, and with Barry — and there's so many things unsaid."

"Barry" is one of the best shows on HBO right now. Although the series has competed at the Primetime Emmy Awards in the comedy categories, it's hard to call "Barry" a "comedy" anymore. The dark character study of a truly demented man may have a few outrageously funny moments, but it's also very bleak in its worldview. On the plus side, it's allowed Bill Hader to show his true dramatic range, with a performance that is both terrifying and sympathetic.

"Barry" is hardly the first dark comedy about an assassin, but unlike others, it's not a show that pulls its punches. The series pokes fun at Hollywood, the theater industry, and actors' volatile and sometimes dramatic nature, but the satire doesn't detract from the gravity of the material. If anything, it makes everything else hit even harder — and there's no better example than how each of the characters have grown and changed.

The second season of Barry was way up in the ratings, thanks in large part to the series being paired with the final episodes of Game of Thrones. Now, Barry's been off the air for three years. The news comes after the Emmy-winning dark comedy series has aired just four episodes of its third season. Episodes of the show air on HBO and HBO Max on Sundays. Production on Season 4 will begin in June in Los Angeles, with series star and co-creator Bill Hader set to direct all eight episodes.

The Season 3 cast includes Hader, Henry Winkler, Sarah Goldberg, Anthony Carrigan, Stephen Root, and Sarah Burns. Returning recurring cast includes D’Arcy Carden and Michael Irby.

Based on the popular Wattpad book by Ali Novak, “My Life With the Walter Boys,” the series stars Rodriguez as Jackie Howard, a 15-year old girl who loses her family in a tragic accident. The Writers Guild of America, East will hold its annual “And the Nominees Are…” documentary contenders’ panel on March 8, with Variety hosting the livestream.

The limited series panel will take place at 7 p.m. Et/ 4 p.m. Pt and will be split into two parts, with the second one airing 45 minutes after the first. It will be streamed on Variety.com via the YouTube link below, and on Zoom for members of the Guild.

When the HBO series “Barry” returns for Season 3, the show will benefit from the response to the breakout Season 2 episode “ronny/lily.” So revealed co-creator and executive producer Alec Berg during the show’s TCA panel on Wednesday.

“I think the response to that episode was so strong that it did open our minds a little bit to being more ambitious and expanding the scope and kind of pushing the show into new places,” Berg said in reference to the Season 2 episode that Hader co-wrote and directed.
