Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” which welcomed back Jon Stewart as one of its hosts this year, will continue its election year tradition of taking the show on the road to the national political conventions this summer, Variety can confirm.
The extent of Stewart’s involvement at the two conventions has not yet been determined, but Comedy Central has made it official that “The Daily Show” will take its “Indecision 2024” coverage to Milwaukee, Wisc., from July 15 to July 18 for a full week of shows during the Republican National Convention. The following month, “The Daily Show” will set up shop in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention from August 19 to August 22.

In one of the most high-profile hires of the 2024 election cycle, NBC News is bringing on former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel as an on-air contributor.
McDaniel will make her NBC debut on Sunday’s Meet the Press, and will appear on NBC, MSNBC and NBC News Now programming.
McDaniel, the former head of the Michigan Republican party, took over the leadership role at the RNC in 2017. She stepped down last month, and Sunday’s interview will be her first since leaving the RNC. A source says conversations about the interview began well before she was hired as a contributor.
NBC News senior vp politics Carrie Budoff Brown announced McDaniel’s hiring to staff Friday.
“It couldn’t be a more important moment to have a voice like Ronna’s on the team,” Budoff Brown wrote. “As chair of the Republican National Committee, she spent nearly eight years at...

Ohio residents on Tuesday overwhelmingly rejected a GOP effort that would have made it more difficult to change the state’s constitution. The hastily-called special election took place ahead of a November vote on whether to enshrine the right to abortion in the state’s constitution.
Abortion is currently legal up to 22 weeks in Ohio, while a six-week ban passed by Republicans lawmakers in 2019 is being challenged in court.
Last year, Republicans lawmakers banned August special elections, citing their enormous cost and low voter turnout. Five months after that — as...

Eva Longoria wants her home state of Texas to do better in a lot of ways.
The former “Desperate Housewives” star and “Flamin’ Hot” director spoke to TheWrap before a screening of her upcoming film at the Los Angeles Latino Film Festival, delivering a list of areas of improvement she wanted to see.
“Do better. Do better,” she said at the Wednesday night event. “I’m a proud Texan and I think my state can do a lot better for women’s rights, for Latino rights, for any person of color, for any person who is worried about the economy, worried about jobs, worried about healthcare, worried about quality education — like these are the things we care about. And my state can do a much better job at all of those things.”

I Am a Killer is now in its fourth season. A doc-series that puts death row inmates on center stage. The inmates chronicle their lives, to ultimately revisit what led them to commit the murders. Witnesses, family members to the victims and advocates alike are also interviewed.
A series that is right up the alley of true crime fans.
In six episodes real life crimes are analyzed, and relayed using archive and found footage, as well as interviews with the convicted murderers.
‘I Am A Killer’ is considered one of the best doc-series in the true crime genre, as it goes above and beyond the sordid details, which true enough, it does cover, but it also covers the narratives of the people involved in the terrible tragedies it addresses.
Episode List – Season 4 of ‘I Am A Killer” Family Matters
A murderer recounts the crime that ended one life and ruined his own.

It was May 4, 2016, and for a certain set of Washington Democrats and their affiliated intelligentsia, it was a day of smug glee. John Kasich had dropped out of the Republican presidential primary, Ted Cruz had bowed out the night before, and the D.C. intelligentsia knew two things for sure: Donald Trump would be the 2016 GOP nominee, and, because Trump was an extreme and unelectable Republican, Hillary Clinton would be the next president.
They went one-for-two, and the country has been on fire ever since.

Rep. The top vote-getters in the open primary go on to face each other in the general election in November.
Their candidacies — which divided Hollywood loyalties during the open primary — each promised solutions for a city grappling with deep anxiety over homelessness, housing affordability and crime.

When voters go to the polls Tuesday for Los Angeles’ primary election, they are likely to advance two mayoral candidates to the general election: Rep. Karen Bass (D-ca) and developer Rick Caruso.
If so, Hollywood’s unusual split in its loyalties between the two could be an indicator of a highly contentious and massively expensive November general election.
Both candidates have courted the industry for support, pledged to retain and boost film and TV production and have trumpeted their support from some of showbiz’s most prominent donors.
Just in the past few weeks, Caruso’s campaign has highlighted his endorsements from social media juggernauts like Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian and Elon Musk, and from industry figures such as Bryan Lourd and Dana Walden. Bass has drawn recent contributions from Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, Octavia Spencer and Jennifer Garner, and a recent event at Bad Robot Productions drew 300 people including Norman Lear,...

When United Talent Agency revives its annual party this evening around the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., expected guests will hail from the worlds of journalism, politics, entertainment and sports. The tableau might just contain members of the next big set of TV anchors, too.

Updated with latest: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-ny) has finally responded to repeated attempts by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-ga) to confront her.
Interviewed on the street outside the Capitol, Ocasio-Cortez said on Friday, “This is a woman that’s deeply unwell, um, and clearly needs some help.”
Of Greene’s repeated attempts to engage her, Ocasio-Cortez said, “Her fixation has lasted several years now. At this point, the depth of that unwellness has raised concerns for other members, as well.”
The New York Congresswoman continued by suggesting a professional evaluation for Greene: “This is an assessment that needs to be made by the proper professionals.” You can watch video of the interview here.
According to The Washington Post, two reporters this week witnessed Greene outside the House chamber attempting to confront Ocasio-Cortez, shouting at her, “You don’t care about the American people! Why do you support terrorists and antifa?...

The announcement includes two new series: Firekeeper’s Daughter, based on Angeline Boulley’s forthcoming debut YA novel about an 18-year-old Native girl who reluctantly goes undercover in a police investigation on her Ojibwe reservation; and the docuseries Great National Parks, which explores some of the most wondrous national parks and wild spaces on Earth.

With a projected win in Arizona and a nearly 14,000 vote lead in Georgia, President-Elect Joe Biden is on a path to win 306 votes in the Electoral College.* That happens to be the exact same total Donald Trump racked up after his state-by-state victories in November 2016.** And this makes Trump’s present refusal to concede to Biden darkly ironic, because Trump has spent much of the last four years touting his 2016 margin as a “landslide” bragging that he beat Hillary Clinton “easily,” “convincingly,” and “so badly.”

Looking for a way to pass the time while we await the results of the 2020 presidential election? Don’t worry, Jimmy Kimmel has got you covered with his latest edition of “Mean Tweets,” featuring political figures like Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Ted Cruz reading some nasty social media commentary about themselves.
In the “Political Edition” of the popular “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” segment, which aired during Wednesday’s show, Sanders, Warren and Cruz, along with Andrew Yang, Anthony Scaramucci, Nancy Pelosi, Cory Booker, John Kerry, Al Franken, John Kasich, Pete Buttigieg, Adam Schiff and Mike Bloomberg, sit down with their phones to read off some scathing tweets skewering everything from their personalities to the way they look to, well, their politics, of course.
Schiff got a special treat while reading off his assigned tweet, as that one was written by President Donald Trump himself.

As a brief distraction from the nail-biting presidential election we’re in the middle of, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Ted Cruz, and more politicians appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in a political edition of the show’s regular segment, Mean Tweets.
Like other installments of the segment, the guests read aloud various mean statements that had been directed toward them on Twitter, whether insulting their appearance, making fun of their demeanor or — in former Ohio governor John Kasich’s case — threatening to throw “collected, stored, warmed up cat piss” into their face.

We’ve lived for the past four years under a man categorically unfit to be president. Fortunately for America, Joe Biden is Donald Trump’s opposite in nearly every category: The Democratic presidential nominee evinces competence, compassion, steadiness, integrity, and restraint. Perhaps most important in this moment, Biden holds a profound respect for the institutions of American democracy, as well as a deep knowledge about how our government — and our system of checks and balances — is meant to work; he aspires to lead the nation as its president, not its dictator.

Sara Haines is returning as co-host of “The View” when the ABC daytime talk show premieres its 24th season next week, the series announced Friday.
Haines — who served as co-host on the ABC daytime talker from 2016-2018 — will rejoin a table of “View” panelists that includes Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin and Meghan McCain, when Season 24 premieres Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 11 a.m. Et.
As TheWrap previously reported, Haines was in final talks to return to “The View” full-time in mid-August, replacing Abby Hunstman, who exited as co-host back in January to work on her father’s Utah gubernatorial campaign. Haines had been filling in as a guest co-host sporadically in Huntsman’s absence.

Sara Haines has been confirmed to return to ABC’s The View as a permanent co-host as the show returns next week for its 24th season, when a focus of the show will be on the final months of the 2020 presidential campaign.
Haines was previously on The View from 2016 to 2018, and departed to join the network’s GMA 3: Strahan, Sara and Keke. After the show was canceled earlier this year, Haines has filled in from time to time following the departure of Abby Huntsman.
In an interview, senior executive producer Hilary Estey McLoughlin said that Haines “is great in either place, which is rare to have somebody who is able to deal with such complex topics that we talk about on The View, and give a perspective that is smart. She brings a lot of zest to the conversation, in addition to being very relatable at the same time.

As they pointed out the highlights and critiqued segments from last week’s virtual Democratic National Convention, television’s late-night hosts returned to do the same for this week’s Republican National Convention.
The first night of the Republican National Convention, which was held at North Carolina’s Charlotte Convention Center, saw Donald Trump Jr., Tim Scott, Kimberly Guilfoyle and others make the the case for President Trump’s re-election. From burns about first night’s speeches to photoshop-heavy skits, here’s how some of late-night reacted to the Rnc kickoff.
Stephen Colbert gave the 2020 election yet another Avengers spin in response to night one of the Rnc.
During last week’s Democratic National Convention, The Late Show’s America: Endgame skit saw the left-leaning politicians as the heroic group of super humans. Leading the pack was Joe Biden’s Captain America, backed by Kamala Harris’ Captain Marvel and Barack Obama’s Iron Man.

It’s become normal that John Oliver starts every episode of Last Week Tonight by saying “A lot happened this week” because it is wildly accurate. It seemed that this week he was speaking a mile-a-minute in order to try to fit in pertinent news at the top of the show.
First on the list was the Democratic National Convention which many were calling an “unconventional” convention, thinking that they were the ones that coined that phrase. It was unconventional because it was a virtual affair with delegates coming up with fun ways to showcase their states during the roll call. Oliver particularly put the spotlight on Rhode Island, who was one of the most memorable as they were bragging about calamari as a masked man, Oliver referred to as “the calamari ninja” presented a plate of the tasty appetizer.

For an event that necessarily unfolded from scattered locations across the country, the theme of the 2020 Democratic National Convention was unified from the start. Over four nights, a (virtual) parade of politicians, celebrities and citizens solemnly told the audience at home that this election is about saving “the soul of this nation” from Donald Trump. Forced by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic to rely on pre-taped videos, moving montages and socially distanced live speeches, the DNC felt less like a convention and more like a particularly earnest telethon trying to raise awareness of a democracy in crisis. It was strange, corny, touching, exhausting, and more straightforward than ever.
Electing Joe Biden, the event’s core argument went, could be a one-stop shop to reverse course on the damage Trump’s time in office has wrought. “What a thing that would be,” marveled fourth night host Julia Louis-Dreyfus with an audible hitch in her voice.

The 2020 Democratic National Convention will make history on Wednesday night when Kamala Harris formally receives the nomination to be the next Vice President of the United States.
Harris is now the third female vice presidential candidate of a major party in U.S. history, following in the footsteps of Sarah Palin (2008) and Geraldine Ferraro (1984). She is also the first Black woman and the first woman of South Asian descent on a major-party ticket for national office.

Elizabeth Warren discussed her upcoming speech at the Democratic National Convention and bridging the gap between the progressive and establishment wings of the party during an interview with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show Tuesday, August 18th.
The highlight of the interview, however, arguably happened about a minute in when, before all the politics, Colbert asked Warren for an update on her golden retriever, Bailey. Warren quickly coaxed Bailey to her side to give him a treat, while an astonished Colbert asked the Senator, “Can you train my dog, Benny?...

Instead of using this week’s nominating convention to articulate a vision for the future of the party, the Democratic Party opted to reach as far back into the past, and to the right, as it possibly could. Seemingly out of a desire to woo disaffected conservatives looking for any excuse to vote against President Trump, the DNC packed the speaking schedule with Republicans, headlined on Monday night by cinematic drone footage of former Ohio governor and presidential candidate John Kasich standing on a dirt road.

The presence of Republicans, virtual blunders, and speeches from Michelle Obama and Bernie Sanders were the focus of Late Show host Stephen Colbert’s scorching take on the first night of the 2020 Democratic National Convention.

Late-night hosts Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah and Jimmy Fallon took aim at the first night of the 2020 Democratic National Convention, which has gone virtual this year due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Monday featured pre-recorded speeches from political figures including Amy Klobuchar, Andrew Cuomo, Jim Clyburn, Bernie Sanders and most notably Michelle Obama. Colbert likened the gathering of all these political stars, from different ends of the political spectrum, to a memorable moment from the final Avengers movie.
Colbert spoofed the final battle scene from Avengers: Endgame, superimposing presidential candidate Joe Biden’s face over that of Chris Evans’ Captain America. The spoof, titled America: Endgame, also saw his running mate Kamala Harris as Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, Pete Buttigieg as Spider-man, Barack Obama as Iron Man and others as Marvel heros. However, it wouldn’t be a true Avengers battle without Thanos.
“Person, woman, man, camera, TV,” says a Thanos-ified Donald Trump.

Meg Whitman spoke for only a fleeting segment of Monday night’s opening of the Democratic National Convention. And yet the Quibi corporate leader and Republican politician’s presence seemed emblematic of the night, in at least two ways: One, she is not in fact a Democrat, and yet was given a chunk of the evening, however small — much like peers in the GOP, including former Ohio Governor John Kasich, who spoke more expansively. The night wasn’t fully given over to Republicans, but it was significantly given over to randomness, unfolding with a sort of anti-logic that caused Whitman’s Opposite Day booking to make a sort of backwards sense. What better convention to bring out Whitman than the one comprised entirely of Quick Bites?

Michelle Obama delivered a passionate condemnation of President Donald Trump during Monday’s opening night of the Democratic National Convention, declaring him “in over his head” and warning that the nation’s mounting crises would only get worse if he’s reelected over Joe Biden.

Michelle Obama, in a preview clip of her remarks at tonight’s Democratic National Convention, says that Joe Biden is a “profoundly decent man guided by faith,” and someone who “knows what it takes to rescue an economy, beat back a pandemic and lead our country.”
Convention organizers made public a clip of pre-taped remarks from the former First Lady, who will be the marquee speaker toward the end of the evening’s events.
Also released were excerpts from other speeches, including former Ohio governor John Kasich, one of a group of Republicans who will be giving remarks.
“Yes, there are areas where Joe and I absolutely disagree. But that’s Ok because that’s America,” Kasich said, according to his prepared remarks. “Because whatever our differences, we respect one another as human beings, each of us searching for justice and for purpose.”

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will each make appearances on the first night of the Democratic National Convention, which will be a bit of a feat of staging such a large scale event in a time of Covid-19.
The program lineup will feature a mix of live and taped segments and, in addition to political figures and “real-life” testimonials, will include celebrities such as Eva Longoria and performances by Leon Bridges, Maggie Rogers and Billy Porter and Stephen Stills.
Other speakers on Monday will include Bernie Sanders, but more notable are Republicans who will get a prime-time speaking slot: John Kasich, former governor of Ohio; Susan Molinari, former congresswoman from New York; Christine Whitman, former governor of New Jersey; and Meg Whitman, former CEO of Hewlett Packard and 2010 California gubernatorial candidate. When Democrats begin their national convention just over two weeks from now, it’ll be a test for the broadcast and cable networks: How to cover an event that will be like no other, where the celebratory atmosphere and masses of people instead will be a more sober, controlled environment that is heavily virtual.
Gone are the crowds, the sky booths, the giant balloon drops and perhaps even the chance of any unexpected moments of drama.
What is likely to unfold is coverage of remote speeches from around the country, with a heavy mix of analysis and commentary from anchors, pundits, historians and correspondents.
“We have never seen anything like this with the conventions,” Judy Woodruff of PBS NewsHour told reporters this past week. “It is not going to be a real convention. It is going to be a program or programs they produce.”

In his first State of the State address, a little over a year ago, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine took time out to recognize his “amazing” health and human services team, asking them to stand in the House Chamber of the Statehouse for applause.
“This strong, compassionate team will work together across agencies to save lives,” remarked DeWine, who had vowed to tackle major health problems afflicting Ohioans, including opioid addiction, infant mortality, and childhood exposure to lead paint.

CNN anchor Don Lemon and former Ohio governor John Kasic got into an on-air yelling match following President Trump’s address on the coronavirus Wednesday night.
Kasich told the “CNN Tonight” anchor that Trump “did fine” with the address: “What I saw tonight is what I anticipated before he delivered the address. Mr. President, you’ve got to be serious. You’ve got to warn the country. We have to move forward and just stick to the script and read what’s on there. And that’s exactly what he did.”
Lemon responded that whether Trump stuck to a script or not was irrelevant since the contents of his speech had to be clarified afterward.

Andrew Yang, who ended his presidential bid last week, is joining CNN as a political commentator, with the first appearance set for Wednesday night’s next presidential debate.
Although he failed to gain much traction in the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary, Yang was able to go from political unknown to a role of prominence in the Democratic primary. He qualified for almost all of the Democratic debates, and attracted a following of loyal supporters that became known as the Yang Gang. His supporters included those on the left and the right, as well as libertarians who were dismayed by both major parties. His backers wore hats and shirts with the campaign’s one word slogan, “Math.” He also used social media and pop culture savvy to draw attention to his bid, along with a proposal to guarantee a $1,000 income to every American in the emerging age of automation.

Bernie Sanders won the New Hampshire primary Tuesday night. Second-place finisher Pete Buttigieg earned 24.4 percent of the vote, while Amy Klobuchar, not long ago polling in single digits, came out of nowhere with 19.8 percent, a classic New Hampshire outlier result.
The words “eked” and “narrowly” are getting a workout in headlines today. There is a Yeah, but… passage in nearly every major media write-up of Bernie’s win. “Sanders cements his front-runner status, but his narrow margins… show how volatile this race is,” is how The New York Times put it.

The first pair of Democratic Party debates in Miami created headlines, viral moments, and for a few, hangovers.
There is danger of that again in the second round, to begin tonight. The candidate field remains enormous, if changed. Last time, of 24 hopefuls, 20 participated, with Massachusetts congressman Seth Moulton and Miramar (Fl) Mayor Wayne Messam among those not on stage. A podium was left open for vanished aviator Amelia Earhart, but she did not return.
Messam and Moulton are still on the outs, having failed to reach 1% in the polls as well as secure 65,000 unique donors.
