He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1976 Queen's Honours List and awarded Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire in the 1996 Queen's Honours List for his services to the sport of mountaineering.
Knighted in 1992 for services to mountaineering.
He was awarded the CRVO (Commander of the Royal Victorian Order) in the 2010 Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services as deputy patron of the Outward Bound Trust.
