Offbeat love stories full of quirky characters are certainly nothing new. They can be groundbreaking (The Graduate) or funny (Rushmore) or sweet (The Oh In Ohio), and they seem to be perfectly suited to independent filmmaking, with low budgets and relatively unknown casts. These films live or die on the strength of their scripts, creating eccentric but lovable characters trying to navigate the sometimes turbulent waters of life and love. The best of these movies find a rhythm with their actors and paint lovely pictures of people. The latest entry in the genre, Karaoke Man, directed and co-written by Mike Petty, achieves these lofty heights for most part.

Heading into next week's installment of "The Hard Times of Rj Berger," we knew it was going to be a big episode.

 

Rj (Paul Iacono) is tormented relentlessly by bully Max Owens (Jayson Blair), especially when it comes to his birthday. This year, true to form, Max doesn't miss an opportunity to torture poor Rj -- See the clip below.

On Monday's (Apr. 25) episode of the MTV scripted comedy "The Hard Times of Rj Berger," Mr. B will start a new chapter of his currently sad and depressing life. MTV's original series "The Hard Times of Rj Berger" is about to introduce a new player into its already established love triangle between Rj, Lily (Kara Taitz) and Jenny (Amber Lancaster). When Rj's grades begin to slip, he's forced to seek help from a tutor. Little does he know what's coming his way.

We have an exclusive sneak peek at the very first scene featuring singer/actress Caitlin Crosby as Amy, the geek-chic tutor. In the clip, we see Rj fantasize about her half naked in a school girl outfit (which totally reminds us of fellow MTV star Jenni "J-Woww" Farley). Watch as Amy calls Rj out and tells him, "Girls can tell when you're doing that."

CBS' comedy pilot from Jeff and Jackie Filgo has won the Becki Newton sweepstakes. With several pilots vying for the former Ugly Betty co-star, Newton picked the CBS family comedy (formerly Homegrown) as her starring vehicle this pilot season. The pilot is formally in second position to Newton's NBC series Love Bites, which is yet to be scheduled and has little chance of returning for a second season. The untitled Filgos project centers on a blue-collar guy who wrestles with how to parent his unmarried grown daughter (Newton) and her 12-year-old son while sharing a house with them as well as his wife and his recently widowed mother. Newton is with Gersh. In other pilot castings, singer-songwriter-actress Caitlin Crosby has joined NBC's drama A Mann's World, starring Don Johnson as a fiftysomething Beverly Hills hairdresser. Meanwhile, TV Line reports that Becki Newton, one of pilot season's most sought-after stars, has signed on for the Fox comedy pilot formerly known as 'Home Grown.' The casting is in second position to her as-yet-unaired NBC series, 'Love Bites.'

Jim Cavizel, also known as Mel Gibson's Jesus in 'The Passion of the Christ,' has booked the leading role in the J.J. Abrams/Jonah Nolan pilot 'Person of Interest,' according to Vulture. He joins the already-cast Taraji P. Henson and Michael Emerson.

Zachary Levi is back on the single market. Us Magazine broke the news that the 29-year-old TV actor has split from his girlfriend of two years, Caitlin Crosby, on Saturday, January 9 just a day before season three of his action comedy series "Chuck" was premiered on NBC.
