The fact that we received a prequel to the 2009 thriller Orphan in 2022 was mind-boggling – especially since the surprisingly entertaining Orphan: First Kill still starred Isabelle Fuhrman as Leena Klammer / Esther, an adult serial killer from Estonia who is able to pass herself off as a 9 year old kid. Looking 9 was easy for Fuhrman when she made the first movie, because she was a child at the time… but now she’s an adult, and the filmmakers had to try to figure out how to make her look like a kid again for the prequel. It worked well enough, and the movie went over well enough with viewers (you can read our review Here), that we started hearing rumblings of an Orphan 3 around the end of last year – and now it’s official. Mark Wahlberg continues to be a major presence in Hollywood movies, particularly in the action genre. Exclusive: The Black List has named the six projects chosen for the 2024 Writers Lab. Now in its 11th year, the project provides creative mentorship and professional support to up-and-coming feature writers as they further develop their works during a weeklong workshop in Ojai, Calif.

The participating writers and their projects are: Jade Song (Chlorine), Colton Childs (Fake-a-Wish), Caitlin Gallo and Brittany Harris (Last Refrain), Emily Adams (Margot), Danny Hogan (The Preserve) and Theo Wanderydz (Wetiko).

The Black List received more than 1,700 script submissions for the program.

During the Lab, each writer will develop their screenplay through peer workshops and one-on-one sessions with working professional screenwriting mentors, including David Coggeshall (The Deliverance), Kiwi Smith (Legally Blonde), Jonathan Stokes (El Gringo), Victoria Strouse (Family Switch), Michael Vukadinovich (Greedy People) and Scott Myers of the website Go Into The Story.

Universal Pictures has tapped Extraction director Sam Hargrave to helm Shinobi, a movie adaptation of the video game franchise created by Sega.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the original Shinobi game featured Joe Musashi as a modern-day ninja who confronts great evil. Ken Kobayashi (Sunny) is writing the script for the Shinobi movie, which will be produced by Marc Platt and Adam Siegel through Marc Platt Production. Dmitri M. Johnson will produce through Story Kitchen, with Toru Nakahara producing through Sega. Mike Goldberg will executive produce alongside co-producer Timothy I. Stevenson.

The original Shinobi arcade game was released in 1987. The franchise has grown to include over a dozen games, with the latest announced at last year’s Game Awards. John Cena has signed on to star in Matchbox, a live-action take on the classic Mattel car toyline.

Apple Original Films has snagged the mighty film package that hails from Skydance and Mattel Films. Sam Hargrave, the director behind the gritty Extraction movies, is on board to helm the feature.

The project is coming in full throttle with a screenplay by David Coggeshall, who wrote action comedy The Family Plan for the streaming and tech giant, and Jonathan Tropper, the author and scribe who wrote the Ryan Reynolds action-adventure feature The Adam Project.

Matchbox is the toy brand first created in 1953 and acquired by Mattel in 1997. Mattel competed with Matchbox in the die-cast car space with its own line, Hot Wheels. According to lore, automotive enthusiast Jack Odell designed the first car for his daughter, who was allowed to take a toy to school only if it was small enough to fit in a matchbox.

The Deliverance is one of the most anticipated horror films of 2024. Directed by Lee Daniels from a screenplay co-written by David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum, the Netflix mystery horror film is inspired by a true story known as the Ammons haunting case. The real story on which the film is based took place in Gary, Indiana in 2011 and it revolved around Latoya Ammons, her mother, Rosa Campbell, and her three children.

The real has been changed to make the film good and not boring but there are many scenes in the film that are based on Ammons’ claims, one of which is the one where a child crawls backward up a hospital wall.

Netflix's The Deliverance is struggling to satisfy its critics. Inspired by a real-world haunting in Gary, Indiana, the movie follows Andra Day as Ebony Jackson as she works to keep her family together while facing the horror of demonic possession. The Deliverance boasts a stellar cast, which includes Day, Oscar-nominee Glenn Close, fellow nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin. Unfortunately, it has not enjoyed much love from its viewers.

The Deliverance has seen nothing but disappointment on Rotten Tomatoes. It sits at a 34% score on the Tomatometer and a 53% score on the audience-led Popcornmeter. Both scores have earned it Rotten designations, as the majority of viewers were displeased by the story. Reviewers cite a painfully slow pace, a clichd narrative, and the melodramatic characters as explanations for their poor reviews.

Lee Daniels' new Netflix movie "The Deliverance" is trying to be two things at once. For most of its runtime, it's a down-to-earth family drama with an unapologetically prickly protagonist. Then, the film descends into the hoariest of cliches as it turns into a heavily religious possession horror pic, complete with potty-mouthed demons and children contorting their bodies in unnatural ways. Neither of these approaches are particularly successful together, although the family drama stuff works much, much better than the horror movie trappings. Billing itself as being based on true events (sure), "The Deliverance" is at its best when its focusing on its flawed main character. That would be single mother Ebony Jackson, played with real grit by Andra Day, who starred in Daniels' "The United States vs. Billie Holiday."

Ebony is not a likable character, and the film isn't afraid to lean into that. She drinks too much, and...

Onscreen possessions can be a scary thing, and its not only because a persons body can suddenly (and horrifyingly) bend so far backwards that the crunch of bones sounds sickening. Lee Daniels The Deliverance, which claims inspiration from real events, pairs the possession with a very personal and well-developed family story. The latter is so good and intriguing that, when the demonic possession begins to overshadow it, I found myself frustrated with the supernatural elements of the film. Written by David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum, The Deliverance kept me hooked until it didnt.

Daniels cuts to the fierce heart of the fictional family at the center of this possession drama, exposing flaws and all, but gets a little too skittish around the horror, so much so that The Deliverance uses the well-trodden exorcism formula to relay didactic faith-based messaging.
