The Rookie creator and showrunner Alexi Hawley addresses a crossover with 9-1-1, offering a thoughtful response. The possibility that the two procedurals could cross paths has been a shared point of discussion amongst both fanbases ever since 9-1-1 made the jump from Fox to ABC. Besides airing on the same network, both dramas tend to be balanced television procedurals that mix humor with heart-pumping and life-threatening moments. Both are also, crucially, set in Los Angeles.
Still, in recent comments to TVLine, Hawley gave a candid response to the idea of The Rookie crossing over with 9-1-1. The creator and showrunner, who wrote and directed The Rookie's recent season 7 premiere, mentioned that it would be a “hard crossover” and mentioned one particular reason why it wouldn't make sense for the two ABC procedurals to come together. Read his response below:

9-1-1 is known for its high-octane civilian rescues, but the first-responder drama isn’t afraid to put its own characters in danger. Since its pilot season in 2018, the procedural following fire (Lafd), police (LAPD), and dispatch (Ladc) has put nearly all of its main cast into peril. Due to the very nature of the series, it's no surprise that so many of them have had more than their fair share of close calls over the years.
While a lucky few have gone relatively unscathed thus far, most characters have had at least one near-death experience, with some even having to endure multiple dire situations. Still, there’s no telling when or how disaster will strike; no character is totally safe. The potentially fatal situations in 9-1-1 are so iconic that 9-1-1’s second spinoff needs to think about the threats its characters will face as much as the characters themselves.

9-1-1 has to contend with Bobby and Athena’s (Peter Krause and Angela Bassett) house problem when season 8 returns in 2025. The key conflict for the show’s power couple leading up to 9-1-1 season, 8 episode 9 has been their lack of permanent residency, but it’s gone unresolved for the first half of the current year. The house previously occupied by the Grant-Nash family had valid reasons to vanish, but 9-1-1 now needs to seriously consider its replacement.
9-1-1 needs to let Bobby and Athena solve their housing issue so that they can focus on the abundance of other problems still affecting them in the show. Athena’s career in 9-1-1 season 8 has already drastically changed, with her first mentee injuring a civilian and an injury continuing to impact her mobility on the field. Conversely, Bobby is back in full swing as the captain of the 118 after nearly quitting...

Through strike delays and industry contraction, television still managed to provide audiences with plenty of worthy shows to delight on across broadcast, cable and streaming.
Netflix’s ambitious “3 Body Problem” turned physics theories into a sci-fi thriller, while Apple TV+’s “Palm Royale” showed us the hilarious — and deadly — inner workings of Palm Beach society. HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country” brought the celebrated anthology series into the endless darkness of the Alaskan winter, as Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” took over the cultural zeitgeist with its autobiographical stalker story and network shows like “9-1-1” and “Abbott Elementary” finally made their anticipated returns following the resolution of the Hollywood double strikes. New broadcast shows also made their mark after long gestating development, including CBS’ “Matlock” starring Kathy Bates, while streaming brought some new and surprising returning hits in Netflix’s “Nobody Wants This” and Peacock’s “Love Island USA” Season...

It's true that plenty of sci-fi movies are more plot-heavy than character-driven, but that doesn't mean that the best additions to the genre don't include complex and well-developed characters. However, in most movies, not just speculative fiction, there are sometimes scenes that fit in well with the plot but end up undermining the arc of an otherwise well-written character. Though this doesn't take away the other moments that exemplify the character's nuanced and complex emotions and motivation, it does give the viewer pause and make them wonder why these scenes are included.
Occasionally, these characters' moments give great sci-fi movies disappointing endings since what happens to the characters is typically the most emotionally compelling piece of a story. Many of these characters are portrayed by brilliant actors who balance the contradictions within their roles and make them work within the narrative. Whether these scenes are throwaway moments meant to be...

One of the biggest questions around Star Trek 4, aside from whether or not it'll get made, is 'who is going to be in it?'. We know that the surviving main cast will be present, assuming it gets made. Yet, beyond them, we're not sure. There are a lot of characters that we've met over the last few years that we'd like to see return to some degree.
There's Gaila from Star Trek 2009, Carol Marcus from Star Trek: Into Darkness, and Jaylah from Star Trek: Beyond. Not to mention side characters like Keenser, rumored characters like George Kirk, and characters played by rising stars like Navigation Officer Darwin (played by Aisha Hinds).
There are plenty of names to pull from, so much so that bringing in some new character from the original series for the sake of it seems pointless. Dare we say even a bit gauche? We...

Things haven’t been easy for Eddie in 911 season 8. He’s had to live with the fact that his son chose to move back to Texas to live with Eddie’s parents. Now Eddie has a difficult choice to make.
Caution: This post contains Spoilers from 911 season 8, episode 8
Throughout the season, Eddie has struggled with losing Christopher. He’s tried to reconnect with his son multiple times, but Christopher hasn’t been interested. And that’s okay. Christopher is a teenager who has been immensely hurt by his dad. Eddie was with someone who looked like Christopher’s mom. It was confusing for everyone, but especially for Christopher.
It’s not up to Christopher to just allow his dad back into his life. It’s up to the parent to fix what has been broken, especially under these circumstances.

It’s definitely not easy for the 118 in 911 season 8, episode 8. What went down in the fall finale?
Caution: This post contains Spoilers from 911 season 8, episode 8
The fall finale promised to be an exciting one with Callum Blue’s Brad shadowing Bobby. We knew he was going to cause some problems, but I don’t think we quite expected the problem that he would bring.
I’ve got to say that the series certainly brought us an ironic moment at the start of the episode. Brad showed the 118 a recent episode of “Hotshots,” and the 118 had some opinions to share. One of those was how unrealistic the chatting was in the scene, which we all know 911 is guilty of doing. This is not a realistic show, but it’s good to see everyone is being good sports about it.

This article contains spoilers for 9-1-1 season 8, episode 8, "Wannabes"
The fall finale of 9-1-1 season 8 feels like an episode that could have aired during the show's Fox era. If there is one observation about the show's move to ABC, it's that there has been more focus on the lives of the main characters over the outlandish emergencies that earned the franchise its reputation. The emergencies in the fall finale, titled "Wannabes", aren't too wild. But there are quite a few of them, which doesn't leave room for any major developments. At least until a surprising scene in the closing minutes.
Things get messy for the 118 following a massive pile explosion. Meanwhile, Athena investigates a brutal beating of a man found behind a grocery store, and Bobby's working relationship with Brad from 'Hotshots' just got a little more intimate.
Cast Corinne Massiah, Gavin McHugh, Marcanthonee Reis, Ryan Guzman,...

The midseason finale of 9-1-1 season 8, titled "Wannabes," largely kept the focus away from any major developments for the main cast. Note: The following story contains spoilers from “9-1-1” Season 8, Episode 8.
“9-1-1” might be saying goodbye to Eddie Diaz in the near future, with series co-creator Tim Minear saying that the firefighter is “serious as a heart attack” about leaving L.A. after Thursday’s fall finale.
Episode 8, titled “Wannabes,” followed as Eddie (Ryan Guzman) continued to struggle with being separated from his son Christopher (Gavin McHugh), who left Los Angeles at the end of Season 7 to live with his grandparents in El Paso. After a begrudgingly quick FaceTime call made him realize his son is drifting further away from him, Eddie started to reevaluate his priorities — and near the end of the episode, he told Buck (Oliver Stark) he was looking at houses to buy there and potentially leave the 118.
But should fans really be worried about Eddie’s future on the show?

In an interview with TVFanatic, showrunner Tim Minear teased, “What I would say is that episode eight this year is more kind of tying up some story threads that have been set up in the first eight episodes. For seven seasons, one vocal and large corner of the 9-1-1 fanbase has been calling for Buck and Eddie to turn their friendship into a romance, but season 8, episode 6 seemingly shut down that plea. Ever since Eddie joined the cast of 9-1-1 in season 2, many viewers have picked up on the chemistry between him and Buck. The two characters quickly became best friends and undoubtedly have one of the strongest relationships in the series. However, both were seemingly straight as they only dated women, until Buck came out as bisexual in 9-1-1 season 7.
New episodes of 9-1-1 season 8 air on Thursdays at 8 pm Et on ABC.

But there are also developments for the rest of the ABC drama's ensemble.

Mickey Haller has a poor track record when it comes to romance on The Lincoln Lawyer.
When we were first introduced to the defense lawyer, we quickly discovered that he had two ex-wives, both of whom he was still on excellent terms with, including one who was still his legal aide.
So, while he’s been a little unlucky in love, he and his exes are still close, which says something about him and how his relationships end.
(Lara Solanki/Netflix)
While some of the series, which just finished its third season, has revolved around Mickey’s unresolved feelings for wife number one (and mother to his daughter Hayley) Maggie McPherson, the two ultimately pressed pause on their relationship for good.
And that was for the betterment of both Mickey and the series.

9-1-1 has some of our favorite relationships on TV right now. In fact, three members of the 118 are in long-term, stable, loving marriages that also showcase strong partnerships. The other two firefighters are still figuring things out. That includes Buck (Oliver Stark), who hasn’t had the best of luck with love and is currently dating fellow first responder Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.). When TV Insider caught up with Stark about the most recent episode and got some teases about the obstacles coming Buck and Tommy’s way, we had to wonder: Does Buck want a relationship like the others—Bobby (Peter Krause) and Athena (Angela Bassett), Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Chimney (Kenneth Choi), and Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Karen (Tracie Thoms)—have, with the romance and partnership right now, or is he still figuring that out? “I think everybody wants someone that obviously they have the romance with,...

Teen pregnancies and witchcraft. What a perfect combination heading into Halloween.
A group of teen girls experienced a mass psychogenic illness, and one of them experienced pseudocyesis, a false pregnancy, in Brilliant Minds Season 1 Episode 6.
Dr. Wolf and his team returned to high school to find the root of this issue and bond with these girls.

While this was a serious issue, it was also one of the season’s heartwarming and entertaining installments.
It showcased the strength of female friendship during those difficult high school years. The viewers also learned why Dana hated high school and why her anxiety started.
Elsewhere, both Wolf and Carol experimented with flirting with new colleagues. Did they get their groove back?

Like any other character-based storytelling format, television is chock full of common tropes.
Sometimes, tropes are overdone or offensive, but they often exist to give the audience a sense of familiarity and relatability.
If I had to choose a favorite trope, it would be the concept of found family, and I wouldn’t even have to think about it.

A grouchy, tough boss has a soft spot for a rough-around-the-edge intern and becomes a parental figure for them.
A set of childhood best friends grow into adulthood together, sharing all of life’s challenges and celebrations like siblings.

This season of 9-1-1 has not been smooth sailing for the Wilson family.
After fighting to bring Mara home on 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 4, you may have assumed that the Wilsons would have a lowkey evening in the Halloween follow-up installment, but that wasn’t the case.

Billie Matalon returned to Colter’s life during Tracker Season 2 Episode 3, and later in the hour, she had a line that may have summed up the whole affair: This got super weird.
Now, it wouldn’t be Tracker without a curveball or two, and this one had a twist you’d never see coming.
And I don’t say that to mean it’s a good thing.
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)
While Tracker Season 2 Episode 1 had a more straightforward missing persons case, the follow-up installment involved potential extraterrestrials, and this one had us learning about the dark world of biohacking blood donations.
Yeah.
Look, there are a lot of shows that are similar to Tracker, at least in the sense that their main objection each week is to solve a mystery. And they have to stand out, right? There can’t just be rudimentary cases of the week.

I think it’s safe to say Morgan and Karadec are finally working as a unit on High Potential Season 1 Episode 6. The days of bickering and quitting on the spot are long gone.
If there is one thing this series is a pro at, it’s keeping the story moving and not letting anything get stale. Whether it’s the writing, the acting, or a combination of both, every episode is fresher than the last.
Now that we’re halfway through High Potential Season 1, fans can expect some shake-ups to keep the plot interesting.

From what I’ve gleaned from the synopses, disappointing news may be on the horizon for some audience members, but we’ll get to that in a minute.

It’s official! One of the things I’ve been hoping for will happen for Blue Bloods‘ Jamie and Eddie before the series wraps up.
It’s still heartbreaking that we only have a few episodes left with these two and with the rest of the Reagan family, but at least Blue Bloods will get the strong send-off it deserves.

Warning: Spoilers for 9-1-1 season 8, episode 5 ahead.
9-1-1 star Oliver Stark teases a significant scene between his character Buck and Ryan Guzman's Eddie when the ABC show returns from a hiatus. The main thrust of 9-1-1 season 8's Halloween episode, titled "Masks", centers on Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Karen (Tracie Thoms) and their family unit. Hen opts to be on shift for the spooky holiday, which causes a disagreement between her and Karen. But the decision to work ends up saving the life of their son Denny (Declan Pratt) after an unbelievable accident. But in the B-plot, Buck has a fair lighter accident of his own.
In an interview with TV Insider, Stark teed up what's ahead for Buck in the upcoming episodes. Even though 9-1-1 season 8 will go on a small hiatus, it will be back on ABC on November 7 at 8 Pm Et with a new episode titled "Confessions.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 5 “Masks.”] 9-1-1 celebrates Halloween in the way only it can: with hijinks, wild cases, and an emergency that hits way too close to home. The good news: Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Karen’s (Tracie Thoms) son Denny (Declan Pratt) is going to be okay after getting pinned when a car hits him. Also in this episode, Buck (Oliver Stark) breaks out in boils after accidentally getting a real corpse for the 118’s Halloween festival. 9-1-1‘s Halloween episodes “are always fun,” Stark tells TV Insider in the video interview above. “This one in particular, there was something about it I think because we all got to be in costumes, which I don’t think we’ve done before. That made it feel like an extra fun experience.” Getting the makeup for the boils, however, was not. “One of the challenges of the episode was trying to...

Is there anything more fun than a Halloween-themed episode of your favorite show?
Surely, there are things out there that may bring more joy, but I don’t want to hear about them right now—not when 9-1-1 just gave us this classic that did nothing but deliver the goods.
Funny, emotional, head-scratching at moments, and filled with heart. 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 5 was the series continuing to be at the top of its game.
(Disney/Ray Mickshaw)
Halloween is spooky season, and while some may prefer less frights and maybe the comforts of a pumpkin spice latte, hayride, and apple picking, others are looking to get Spooked.
And at the 118, they were going all out for their haunted house extravaganza! Well, to a degree, that is.
There’s something refreshing about a fun Halloween episode. While this one did get serious rather quickly, certain parts played very comically...

9-1-1 season 8 has finally put one of its most irritating storylines in the past, meaning the series can finally get back on track and return to its former glory. The ABC procedural drama TV show created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear debuted its eighth season (and second one on ABC) at the end of September 2024. 9-1-1 season 8 premiered with a bee-nado disaster, and for the first handful of episodes, it was evident that something wasn't right. More specifically, some characters weren't where they belonged.
ABC hasn't confirmed 9-1-1 season 8's episode count as of the writing of this article, but it's expected to be a full season, meaning it will likely contain around 18 episodes (based on past seasons).
9-1-1 season 7 ended with Bobby Nash surviving his heart attack (one episode after resigning from Station 118). Despite his brush with death, there were no indications that Bobby would resume...

Oh, readers, TV Fanatic has got some news for you. Madeline Matlock will finally have her day in the sun and in court. Who says you can’t bring criminals to justice and have an AARP membership at the same time?
Although it may not be all rainbows and smiles, as you’ll see in the promo, Madeline is not thrilled about the opportunity. Then again, she did want Olympia’s trust.
One thing we can count on is that not everything will be as it seems on Matlock. The series has done everything it can to keep audiences on their toes.
(Sonja Flemming/CBS)
Given that the wheels have only started turning, viewers have a whole season of twists and turns to look forward to.

We may have gotten the answer to the long-simmering question as to why the townspeople don’t talk to one another during From Season 3 Episode 5.
The town hall meeting was a hot mess from start to finish, leading to even more division, anger, and fright.
And another casualty. There’s always another casualty.
(Chris Reardon/MGM+)
Coming out of From Season 3 Episode 4, you could sense that everyone was even more on edge, and that’s to be expected after the night they had.
Holding a meeting, especially in light of Tabitha’s return, was the right call if only to avoid the inevitable whisper down the lane set to start immediately. But when you get a bunch of frustrated and terrified people in a room, things devolve rather quickly.
I’ve been wondering why no one talks to each other on a loop for what feels like years now, and...

Tulsa King Season 2 Episode 6 pops us right in the home stretch of the second season, and the stakes just increased even more than anticipated.
A sit-down between the three warring factions went well enough that everyone left the meeting with smiles on their faces, but Bill thinks he succumbed to Dwight’s charms, screwing himself in the process.
Cal, the guy with the biggest chip on his shoulder and an insane new business partner, wasn’t even involved in the process. How could it have solved anything?
(Brian Douglas/Paramount+)
I was shocked that Tulsa King Season 2 Episode 5 skipped right over the after-effects of Jackie murdering people right under Cal’s nose.
It was even more shocking that he was his usual cocky self with Jackie during “Navigator” when he already saw what Jackie was capable of doing.
Sure, Chickie idiotically took a pistol through Tsa, and Bill snubbed his...
