Nearly 70 years since Godzilla first appeared on-screen, the king of the monsters has headlined almost 40 feature films along with a few TV shows. Initially conceived as a metaphor for nuclear weapons, the atomic dinosaur has since battled numerous monsters on-screen, something that has driven Warner Bros’ recent adaptations while they build a Monsterverse. A different approach has been taken by writer/director Takashi Yamazaki, taking the icon back to its post-war roots for an outstanding work that is among the franchise’s best.

Today, they have also announced that they’ve given the greenlight to a new Godzilla movie that will be written and directed by Godzilla Minus One mastermind Takashi Yamazaki, who will also be handling the visual effects! Godzilla is stomping its way back to the big screen.
A new “Godzilla” movie, from the director of last year’s Oscar-winning Japanese film “Godzilla Minus One,” has been officially greenlit. Toho, the Japanese entertainment company and creator of Godzilla, made the announcement on Friday.
Takashi Yamazaki, who wrote and directed the surprise hit “Godzilla Minus One,” will return for the new film. He’s once again handling the VFX, after winning the Academy Award for best visual effects in 2023.
“Godzilla Minus One” was Toho 33rd “Godzilla” movie and the 37th to include the famous monster. The Japanese film is unrelated to Hollywood’s recent portrayals of Godzilla in Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Monsterverse, which includes King Kong. Set in Japan after World War II, “Godzilla Minus One” starred Ryunosuke Kamiki as Kōichi Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot who survives an almost fatal encounter with Godzilla and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

"There's no way to stop it." The big radioactive lizard is back! Again! Japan's Toho is planning another 2024 re-release of this beloved, Oscar-winning, monster movie mega-hit Godzilla: Minus One. The re-release is part of the 70th Anniversary of Godzilla celebrations (more info here), because the original Gojira movie opened in Japan on November 1st way back in 1954. So this is also re-releasing on November 1st in the US as well - after a successful run last winter. Prolific Japanese filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki directed this epic action sci-fi - starring Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, Kuranosuke Sasaki. Post-war Japan is at its lowest point when a new crisis emerges in the form of a giant monster, baptized in the horrific power of the atomic bomb. Sea monster movies tap into the fear of the unknown depths, offering a mix of horror and entertainment that resonates with audiences. Films like "The Shape of Water" and "Godzilla" bring sea monsters to life with emotional stories that elevate the genre to new heights. From classic creature features to modern horrors, sea monster movies continue to captivate and terrify viewers with their imaginative tales.
As much as the ocean is a popular tourist destination, the best sea monster movies have caused anxiety about going into unfamiliar waters. Just as the vastness of space has given way to countless fictional stories about possible terrors up there, the unknown depths of the world's oceans offer tales of aquatic mystery. Though the topic of sea monsters has given the world a seemingly endless amount of schlock, there have been several cinematic riffs on the formula, mostly in the horror genre, but not always.

When Shaun of the Dead star Simon Pegg first showed up on our screens back in the day, he earned a lot of fans through the fact that he was a celebrity-on-the-rise who had “geeky” interests and embraced “geek culture.” There’s a quote from him bouncing around where he said, “Being a geek is all about being honest about what you enjoy and not being afraid to demonstrate that affection. It means never having to play it cool about how much you like something. It’s basically a license to proudly emote on a somewhat childish level rather than behave like a supposed adult. Being a geek is extremely liberating.” He even titled his memoir Nerd Do Well… But last year, he distanced himself from his past self, writing off nostalgia as a neurological disorder and telling The Guardian, “I’ve aged out of a lot of what people assume I’m about.

The King of Monsters finally has his share of Oscars glory.
In an ironic triumph of small over large, Japanese monster movie sensation Godzilla Minus One — which was made for only about $15 million — beat out four big-budget Hollywood tentpoles to win the best visual effects category. It’s the first time in decades that a non-u.S. studio film has won the category. Despite its deep influence on the history of visual effects in cinema, this year was the first time in the Godzilla franchise’s seven-decade history that it was nominated for an Oscar.
Godzilla Minus One was written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who also headed up the film’s VFX team, which included Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi and Tatsuji Nojima. The team is now Japan’s first-ever winner of the best visual effects Oscar. In another rarity, a director winning the category has only occurred once before...

The film has now crossed over $55 Million in total U.S. box office, making it the #3 Highest Grossing Foreign Language Film in U.S. history!!
Godzilla Minus One passed Hero ($53.7 million) and Parasite ($53.3) to claim that honor. The critically acclaimed film’s worldwide total currently stands at a massive $102.6 million.

"Godzilla Minus One" is one of the best Godzilla movies of all time. At times a riff on "Jaws," it's also an homage to the 1954 original movie and technically a sequel to "Oppenheimer." Yes, the 33rd film in the franchise feels radically different and yet comfortably familiar. It uses a post-war setting to tell another story of humanity's first meeting with the King of Monsters, bringing back the original film's nuclear imagery by giving an update to Godzilla's atomic breath. This helps turn the titular kaiju into a terrifying force of nature bringing about divine punishment.
Perhaps the biggest achievement of "Godzilla Minus One" is how it does the unthinkable and makes you care about the puny humans being crushed by the giant monster. Again, the post-war setting gives the film a historical background to mine meaningful drama, with the protagonist being a failed kamikaze pilot with survivor's guilt...

The film explores the personal struggles of characters like Kichi Shikishima, a kamikaze pilot grappling with his own courage and motivations. Director Takashi Yamazaki aims to make Godzilla's rampages scarier than ever, with the goal of moving and entertaining audiences through the characters' bravery.
