The show will have its 50th anniversary special, celebrating a rich legacy that includes the many actors who have starred and made cameos in several films and shows. Finn Wolfhard of Stranger Things fame stars in and co-directs the horror-comedy Hell of a Summer, set in a familiar location.…summer camp. Hopefully this outing can carve out its own unique niche in the well-trodden slasher film subgenre. The trailer’s heavy on comedy and light on horror, but it does offer a sampling of gore, so there’s that.

Wolfhard and Billy Bryk co-wrote, co-direct, and are part of the ensemble cast that includes Fred Hechinger, Abby Quinn, D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai, Pardis Saremi, Rosebud Baker, and Adam Pally.

The “Stranger Things” breakout star makes his directorial debut with ’80s-inspired horror-comedy film “Hell of a Summer,” which he cowrote with co-director Billy Bryk. The duo also appear in the film, which is led by “Nickel Boys” and “Gladiator II” actor Fred Hechinger.

The official synopsis reads: “‘Hell of a Summer’ centers on 24-year-old camp counselor Jason Hochberg (Hechinger), who arrives at Camp Pineway thinking his biggest problem is that he feels out of touch with his teenage co-workers. What he doesn’t know is that a masked killer is lurking on the campgrounds, brutally picking counselors off one by one.”

D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai, Abby Quinn, Pardis Saremi, Rosebud Baker, and Adam Pally also star. Hechinger, Wolfhard, and Bryk all produce the feature, along with Jason Bateman, Michael Costigan, and Jay Van Hoy. The film completed post-production in 2023 before landing at Neon for distribution.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has been widely hailed as the best instalment in the trilogy, though some newly revealed concept art hints at a movie that's arguably even grander in scale than the one fans watched in theaters last month.

There are lots of sequences showcased here that either weren't in the final cut or changed significantly. Why? It likely comes down to practical reasons like the movie's budget; however, by far the biggest talking point is what appears to be a glimpse at an alternate timeline with Eggman ruling over Earth alongside Metal Sonic.

Actress and producer Aubrey Plaza has responded to the unexpected death of her husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena.

“This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support,” said Plaza and members of the Baena and Stern families in a joint statement released Monday. “Please respect our privacy during this time.”

A well-respected indie filmmaker known for titles like Life After Beth and The Little Hours — both of which starred Plaza — Baena died on January 3 at age 47. Per a report released by the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner, the cause of death was suicide.

Collaborators and friends alike are paying tribute to Jeff Baena, the indie filmmaker who died at the age of 47 over the weekend as a result of suicide. Baena, known for rich and darkly comic films like The Little Hours and Life After Beth, both starring his wife and frequent creative partner Aubrey Plaza, was mourned by Alison Brie, Adam Pally, Molly Shannon and many others.

On her Instagram Story, Brie — who worked with Baena on his 2020 Netflix project Horse Girl and the 2022 IFC Films pic Spin Me Round — posted a series of photos of herself and the late writer-director, accompanied by a broken red heart. The pictures ranged from behind-the-scenes photos and photoshoots to the Sundance Film Festival debut of Horse Girl and what appears to be on-location for a film shoot in Italy (both The Little Hours and Spin Me Round shot there). “Rest in peace, my friend,” she added.

Adam Pally is among those in Hollywood remembering late director Jeff Baena, who died Friday by suicide at the age of 47.

Baena was a writer-director who helmed such indie films as Life After Beth, The Little Hours, Horse Girl and Spin Me Round, often working with wife Aubrey Plaza. The pair married in 2020 after being together for 10 years.

Pally and others who knew Baena have taken to social media over the weekend to share their memories of him, after the news of his death broke early Saturday morning.

On Instagram Sunday, Pally wrote, “Jeff Baena was a sweet, Jewish boy from Miami. He was a collaborator, a mentor, the scrappiest basketball player with the ugliest jump shot you ever saw.”

Recently, the studio announced that development is underway for a fourth installment of the Sonic the Hedgehog films.

Released in February 2020 and April 2022, respectively, Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 earned a combined $725.2 million globally and generated $181 million in consumer spending from home entertainment rentals and purchases.

Last April, the spinoff series Knuckles debuted on Paramount+, earning over 11 million total global hours in its first 28 days of streaming, making it the #1 Kids & Family series ever in terms of hours on the platform.

Jeff Baena, a screenwriter and director whose credits include the offbeat comedies “The Little Hours” and “Life After Beth,” has died. He was 47.

A spokesperson for Baena confirmed his death. His body was discovered on Friday at a Los Angeles residence, according to the L.A. County Coroner’s Office, which determined the cause of death to be suicide.

Baena was the husband of Aubrey Plaza, who starred in his films “The Little Hours,” a 2017 black comedy set in a 14th century convent, and “Life After Beth,” a zombie satire. “The Little Hours” was loosely inspired by “The Decameron,” as well as Baena’s college coursework in Medieval and Renaissance Studies. Critics praised the film’s modern sensibility and irreverence, while reviewers also lauded “Life After Beth” for its idiosyncratic, often hilarious, take on a well-worn horror genre.

Paramount's live-action Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has four installments now, and ranking the movies and TV show spinoffs from worst to best reveals which project is better than the rest. Although the series nearly got off to a horrible start with the "Ugly Sonic" design for Sega's iconic video game character, the studio smartly redesigned the Blue Blur and saved the franchise. 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog was a big enough hit that Paramount could justify continuing to explore this world and expand it by including more Sonic the Hedgehog video game characters in the movies.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was the first sequel in the franchise, and the 2022 release became an even bigger hit than its predecessor. The introduction of Knuckles paved the way for his Paramount+ TV spinoff show, Knuckles, in 2024. The franchise then returned to the big screen with the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 later that year.

The speedy blue hedgehog returns for a third instalment in Sega’s Sonic franchise, based on the popular video game series. This time round, the film is actually an improvement on the previous two movies, thanks to a couple of key factors, namely Jim Carrey pulling double duty and an inspired voice performance from Keanu Reeves.

Oh my, it looks like the animated critters have taken over the multiplex during this pre-holiday weekend. The year-end holiday marquee isn’t as crowded this year as it usually is, and there’s no Star Wars or Avatar, but Hollywood studios believe there’s still enough merriment to be had at the box office.

Three movies in, it’s not surprising that the Sonic the Hedgehog cinematic universe is starting to get more crowded.

And Jim Carrey has not only abandoned his short-lived retirement to return as the mad scientist Dr. Ivo Robotnik, he does dual service as Ivo’s 110-year-old but very sprightly grandfather Gerald. Because when you snag Jim Carrey for the third in a series of video game movie adaptations, it’s a shame to waste him in only one role.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is on track to having a big opening weekend at the holiday box office!

Jim Carrey, Keanu Reeves, and Ben Schwartz led the arrivals at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Monday night (December 17) at the Tcl Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

Also in attendance were co-stars James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Krysten Ritter, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Lee Majdoub, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Alyla Browne, James Wolk, and Sofia Pernas.

With the upcoming release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Ben Schwartz — who voices the titular character — is looking back on the early days of “Ugly Sonic.”

When the trailer for the franchise’s first film debuted in 2019, fan reaction was immediately negative, criticizing Sonic’s look and in particular, his human-like teeth. The reaction was so intense that the filmmaking team vowed to redesign the character and delay the movie’s release date for three months.

“Maybe sometimes you need a little push to really look in the mirror and to hear the fans, to then really figure out if you want to adjust. And we did,” Schwartz told The Hollywood Reporter at Sonic 3‘s Los Angeles premiere on Monday. “How often can you think of a film that really listens to fans and the studio takes money and time to change it because they think it would better the film?...

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 races into theaters later this week but footage and descriptions of the threequel's post-credits scene are already doing the rounds on social media platforms like X, Reddit, and TikTok.

How? We can't imagine a critic has been blatant enough to record these scenes, so this is likely a "reap what you sow" situation for Paramount Pictures after inviting influencers and YouTubers to early screenings.

The Sonic the Hedgehog 3 star said in a recent interview that he would be down to revisit the character he played in the 1994 comedy.

“Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea. If somebody had the right idea, I guess… It’s not really about the money,” Carrey told ComicBook. “I joke about the money… But I never know. You can’t be definite about these things.”

Paramount Pictures brought back the original Sonic character design for a special Sonic the Hedgehog 3 promotion.

In 2019, the studio released the first trailer for the big-screen adaptation of the classic Sega video game. Backlash on social media over the character showing so many teeth quickly took over, which forced Paramount to redesign the character.

Ahead of the premiere of Sonic 3 on December 20, the company revealed an “Ugly Sonic” Christmas sweater, part of a special giveaway to promote the new film. The ugly Christmas sweater is one of the prizes for the “12 Hours of Sonic” giveaway.

Following the backlash over Sonic in 2019, director Jeff Fowler took to social media to address the character would undergo a design.

“Thank you for the support. And the criticism,” he shared on Twitter, now known as X after Elon Musk’s takeover. “The message is loud and clear… you aren’t happy with the design & you want changes.

Jim Carrey has an idea of how he can reprise his role as The Grinch after starring in the 2000 film How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

In a new interview, Carrey says he would want to play the Dr. Seuss-created character again, but with one major change.

“Oh, gosh, you know, if we could figure out the Grinch,” Carrey told ComicBook when asked what character he would like to play again. “The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of makeup and can hardly breathe. It was an extremely excruciating process.”

He continued, “The children were in my mind all the time. ‘It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids.’ And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world.”

Sometimes, you just need to laugh. And in the new comedy The Gutter, from Yassir and Isaiah Lester, you’ll get that chance. The new flick features hilarious performances from Shameik Moore and D’Arcy Carden. It also offers an impressive line up of co-stars including Adam Brody, Rell Battle, Adam Pally, Paul Reiser, and Susan Sarandon. Centering around a miracle bowler, the film offers dramatic actor Shameik a chance to try something fresh. And yes, the man succeeds. The chemistry between Moore and Carden is fantastic.

Recently, I had the chance to chat with Yassir, Isaiah, and the film’s co-lead, D’Arcy Carden. First up, speaking to the filmmakers, they opened up about the process of creating this comedy. It’s a rare thing to see an outrageous and sometimes risky comedy in this day and age. They talked about their approach and giving Moore the chance to be funny.

Paramount Pictures takes fans behind the scenes of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 with the “Casting a Shadow” featurette. The minute-long video features Keanu Reeves in the recording booth, getting into character as the main villain. “For 50 years, Shadow’s been in a state of suspended animation,” says Reeves, adding, “He’s coming out of it seeking revenge.”

Jim Carrey, the voice of Dr. Robotnik, describes Shadow as having a “sympathetic, brooding kind of darkness that Keanu has mastered so brilliantly.” Ben Schwartz, the voice of Sonic, and Idris Elba, the voice of Knuckles, also share their thoughts on Shadow in the video.

The cast also includes James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Adam Pally, and Lee Majdoub. Newcomers to the film franchise include Alyla Browne and Krysten Ritter.

Tickets for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 have just gone on sale and an explosive new trailer has been released by Paramount Pictures. The focus is very much on Shadow's mission of revenge, along with the dynamic between Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles.

It goes without saying at this point that Jim Carrey steals the show, particularly as he's taking on dual roles in this threequel as both Dr. Robotnik and his grandfather, Shadow's creator. There are also the expected pop culture references, with poor Tails compared to Detective Pikachu.

Back to Reeves, though, and he's so far proving himself a pitch-perfect choice to bring Shadow to life in this epic third chapter of the hit franchise. Similar to the Knuckles TV series, we'd imagine Paramount is heading into this movie with the intention of launching a big or small screen spin-off revolving around the fan-favourite anti-hero.
