When Bob Doto reviewed Spork a few years ago, he coined the term "bitpunk" to explain the new ground being broken by J.B. Ghuman Jr.'s quirky tale of a girl with boy bits who finds her stride in the cruel high-school landscape by dancing her little heart out. I can certainly appreciate and even agree with the term Doto puts forth but I can't get behind the film in quite the same way he did in large part because I don't care for the genre or the film - even if it does include some moments of sublime awesomeness.

Savannah Stehlin is Spork.
Written and directed by debuting feature filmmaker J.B. Ghuman Jr., the 2010 independent musical comedy movie Spork is intriguingly hyped as “Glee Meets Napoleon Dynamite.” Hmmmm….
The coming-of-age film spins the tale of a frizzy-haired, pink-cheeked outcast named Spork (Savannah Stehlin, TV’s Sleeper Cell) who is trying to navigate her way through the hell that is junior high. When a school dance show provides an opportunity for Spork to show up a mean-girls gang, her trailer-park neighbor Tootsie Roll (Sydney Park) steps up to coach her with some “booty-poppin’” moves. With a little positive thinking and a lot of practice, Spork finds herself on the way to both standing out and fitting in.
Featuring a bunch of colorful, foul-mouthed musical numbers and a vintage 1990s soundtrack (which includes Jj Fad’s “SuperSonic” and 2-Live Crew’s “Get...

Morgan Spurlock's new Comic-Con documentary Comic-Coc Episode IV: A Fan's Hope has been acquired by Wrecken Hill Entertainment and they will be distributing the film, with plans to release it in the Spring of 2012.
I'm not the biggest fan of Spurlock, the guy and his films just seem to annoy me. But I love Comic-Con, it's my favorite event of the year. The documentary will be interesting to watch, and it will be good introduction to people that don't know what Comic-Con is really about. As for people like myself and like many of your, we live the adventure every year for real, and we love it.
Here's the full Press Release with all the deatiled information:
Los Angeles, CA (December 6, 2011) — Chris Ball, President and CEO of La-based film production and distribution company Wrekin Hill Entertainment, and Joel Weinshanker, President and CEO of the National Entertainment Collectibles Association...

Morgan Spurlock's latest documentary Comic Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope was one of Peter's favorite movies [1] at Toronto and one of my favorite movies [2] of Fantastic Fest. It's a totally different film for the Super Size Me director as he stays off camera and follows several unique people on their journey to the mecca of pop culture, San Diego Comic-Con. In doing so , Spurlock dissects not only why Comic Con is such an amazing event, but why we geeks love what we love. The film is beautiful, inspiring, funny and, up until today, had only played at festivals. That'll change next year because Wrekin Hill Entertainment and the National Entertainment Collectibles Association have acquired the film for theatrical distribution in Spring 2012. In addition, the film will tour larger venue and bring audiences outside of San Diego their own kind of mini-Comic-Con experience complete with Q&A's, contests, presentations,...

1Up is a new microcinema based in Perth, Australia that is launching with a very ambitious slate of screenings this summer. So far, they’ve released their full schedule for the months of June and July that includes a film almost every night of the week, and sometimes two films.
These are movies that have played on the international festival circuit, but many have not been released yet. So this is a rare treat to still see many of them still in a theater setting, even a 20-seat microcinema like 1Up.
The summer screening series kicks off with one of the best films to come out of Australia in recent years: Stuart Simpson’s vicious throwback to ’60s B-movie madness, El Monstro Del Mar, which was reviewed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film last year.
Other movies that 1Up will be screening include such festival hits such as Best Worst Movie,...

Title: Spork Director: J.B. Ghuman, Jr. Starring: Savannah Stehlin, Sydney Park, Rachel Fox, Michael Arnold, Sydney Park, Beth Grant, Oana Gregory, Chad Allen, Yeardley Smith The laboriously quirky low-fi coming-of-age comedy ‘Spork’, from writer-director J. B. Ghuman, Jr., serves as a reminder that the words “original” and “good” are not necessarily interchangeable. Heck, this low-budget offering isn’t even all that original, in fact, just constructed of parts to bait one into the false feeling that it is so. ‘Spork’ centers around a frizzy-haired, small town junior high outcast (Savannah Stehlin) — so nicknamed because her absentee mother told her before splitting that she was a hermaphrodite — and her bangle-bracleted...

Teenagers are confusing as it is, but their depiction in the film “Spork” makes them even more bewildering. Spork (Savannah Stehlin) is a 14-year-old hermaphrodite with an overly passive personality that makes her difficult for viewers to relate to or sympathize with. Raised as a girl by her older brother after their mother died and father left, Spork has all the opportunities to grow into an interesting character with an original story — yet the film doesn’t quite capture it that way.
Spork is an awkward young girl easily labeled an outcast. Her family is so poor and bizarre that they buried her mom in the backyard, ironically overgrown with weeds that Spork is deathly allergic to. She also kept and stuffed their pet dog Buster after his death. She...

Spork on the other hand, is quite the opposite, a film that earns its giggles through very calculated efforts including a unique story, equally innovative and appropriate production techniques and, most importantly, a main character who’s incredibly odd, yet wildly endearing all at the same time. Continuing with our 2010 year end celebration actor Jesse Kozel had given us his awesome best and worst list of 2010. Thanks Jesse!
Thanks for the opportunity to spill the beans on what I think is riding the line between good and bad in my world.
I only wanted to include films that played to wide audiences either at festivals with large crowds, theatrical releases or if they were available on DVD.
Best of 2010:
Black Swan - Aronofsky does it again with this mind bending thriller set in the world of Ballet. You know those people are crazy, but now you get to see inside the head of a prima ballerina for the first time. Stellar performances and an overall captivating setting make for the best film I've seen this year.

Spork, directed by Jb Ghuman Jr., is a sweet little film dressed in an 80s veneer about a young girl-identified hermaphrodite named Spork (Savannah Stehlin) making her way through the vicious absurdity that is Junior High. We meet Spork at rock bottom, where it seems everyone, including a gaggle of Britney Spears-obsessed tween girls, has it in for her. J.B. Ghuman doesn't mind you telling him that his movie is weird-- in fact, he and his stars have hand signals to support their love for the giant dose of weirdness that is Spork, a little comedy about growing up weird and lonely in an era that is such a weird mix of the 80s and 90s that Ghuman calls it, simply, "19J.B." Last weekend I caught up with Ghuman and the young actresses Savannah Stehlin (who plays the odd but endearing Spork) and Sydney Park (playing the ball of fire that is Spork's only friend Tootsie Roll), and it was kind of as if the three of them let me in on their weekly brunch date, for all the giggling and inside jokes that were going on. In the film Stehlin stars as the title character, a hermaphrodite with terrible fashion sense and social skills who musters...
