Mark Ruffalo’s Role Prep (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Mark Ruffalo had a Poor Things panic moment. The 56-year-old actor was absolutely not feeling his age when it came to his sex scenes with Emma Stone in the quirky, science-fantasy flick. “I didn’t know if I could pull this off,” Ruffalo confessed in a recent interview, adding that he wondered, “Am I too old to be doing that kind of stuff? Does anyone want to see that?”
Cue the anxiety about baring it all. The Avengers star admitted he spent some time in doubt, worrying about how fans would react to his role as Duncan Wedderburn alongside Stone’s Bella Baxter. But his biggest worry? Hollywood’s prude phase. “Sexuality is so deeply connected to the psychology of a character,” Ruffalo shared, pointing out that it should be explored through the character, rather than shying away from it.

Emma Stone might be in a whole bunch of your favorite movies — but what are her favorites?
In January 2024, Stone spoke to Letterboxd — the social media site centered around movies — about her "four favorites," a regular interview the outlet does with major Hollywood celebrities. After appearing visibly stressed by the prospect of only picking four movies, Stone responds that Charlie Chaplin's 1931 comedy "City Lights" is her all-time favorite movie. "I love 'Network,'" Stone continued, name-checking the 1976 dark comedy that won Best Picture at the 49th Academy Awards in 1977. "'Mikey and Nicky,' I just saw it for the first time a couple of weeks ago," Stone raved, citing Elaine May's movie (also from 1976) about a mobster and his best friend (played by John Cassavetes and Peter Falk). "I love almost every Cassavetes movie — that one wasn't Cassavetes, he's just in it. It's obviously Elaine May, who's a genius,...

Filled with sex, violence, and perverse scientific experiments, several Poor Things scenes have shocked and thrilled audiences. Yorgos Lanthimos' adaptation of Alasdair Gray's novel follows Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), an adult woman with the brain of a child, as she grows up fast and comes to understand the world around her through a unique lens. Without the restrictions of polite society to weigh her down, Bella fixates on sexual pleasure and instant gratification, leading to some intense sex scenes and plenty of regressive outbursts of violence and profanity.
Poor Things' 11 Oscar nominations (and four wins) are an indication of its critical charm, which is impressive for a movie that is so visually confronting. Lanthimos uses his signature fish-eye lenses along with bright, saturated colors to create a dizzying world where nothing seems to fit. In Godwin Baxter's (Willem Dafoe) home laboratory...

Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos’ next film, Bugonia, will premiere in November 2025, and will star Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.
Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos is following up the acclaimed Poor Things with an anthology film, Kinds Of Kindness this month. But before the latter film’s even been released, the date for his next film has been announced: Focus Features has said that Bugonia, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, will premiere in US cinemas on the 7th November 2025.
A film Lanthimos has had in the works for a while, Bugonia is a remake of the 2003 South Korean sci-fi comedy, Save The Green Planet!. The original, a hit in its home country, was about a deranged man who, convinced of an imminent alien invasion, kidnaps an executive in the mistaken belief that he’s one of the invaders.

With Kinds Of Kindness, his ninth feature film, Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos reinforces his formidable reputation as one of the great directors of contemporary world cinema. This triptych piece — studded with the characteristically oddball humour, violent shocks and sexual preoccupation of Lanthimos’ best work —is his version of going back to basics. His third consecutive collaboration with Emma Stone is perhaps the most stripped-down of the trio, unadorned by the ornate period trappings of The Favourite and the intricate, Victorian-steampunk production design of Alasdair Gray adaptation Poor Things. It’s shot and set in modern New Orleans, but far from the instantly recognisable Creole architecture of the French Quarter: seemingly prosaic offices, roads and suburban homes are the core locations. As ever with Lanthimos, though, the action is rarely run-of-the-mill.

The Sci-Fi genre consists of some of the most inventive and life-changing films because by the very definition of the word the creators have to invent a fictional future or technology and while some of the films in this genre give us spectacle others give us a story that makes us think about the future and how our world is changing for better or for worse. So, today we thought of listing the best new sci-fi films you can watch at home right now and in this list, we didn’t include any film released before 2023.

Bella's journey to independence is highlighted by her evolving use of personal pronouns in Poor Things. Bella's language changes reflect her personal growth, independence, and sense of self. Language plays a significant role in shaping characters' identities and autonomy in the film.
The movie Poor Things has been celebrated by audiences thanks to Bella Baxter's incredible transformation as a character, and one small detail perfectly captures her journey. Based on Alasdair Gray's book, Poor Things, the movie follows Bella Baxter, a young woman who is reanimated with the brain of a fetus by eccentric scientist Godwin Baxter. Although Bella Baxter's age changes in Poor Things, she's essentially an infant in an adult body and must learn how to navigate the world for the first time. She learns about all the joy, confusion, and heartbreak that comes with being alive, and through these experiences, she also begins to discover her sense of self.

Tony McNamara likes a challenge but when Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos first presented him with Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel by Poor Things to adapt into a script, even the seasoned Australian writer admits he found the material daunting.
“When Yorgos first gave me the book, I read it and thought, ‘Oh, this is great – I’ve never adapted a book before’ and then I read it and thought, ‘Well, this should not be the book,” McNamara told an audience at Dublin’s Storyhouse festival. “I mean, it’s a book about a baby’s brain in a woman’s head – let’s not do this. But Yorgos and I had a great time working together on The Favourite and The Great and we clearly get along so eventually I said, ‘Alright, I’ll do it’ and I was up for the challenge.

Mel Brooks’s Young Frankenstein, co-written with Gene Wilder (seen here with Marty Feldman and Teri Garr) inspired Tony McNamara’s screenplay adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s novel for Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things (Oscar wins for Emma Stone and costume designer Holly Waddington).
By using well-chosen excerpts from the audiobook of Gene Wilder’s autobiography, Kiss Me Like A Stranger, Ron Frank lets Wilder himself guide us through the documentary, by positioning him in dialogue with many friends and colleagues assembled here, most prominently Mel Brooks, who directed Wilder in a number of groundbreaking movies. Warning! This article contains Spoilers for the 2023 Poor Things film and the 1992 book by Alasdair Gray!
Taking liberties with the source material, Poor Things uses whimsy to explore human nature & Bella's journey. The change in setting to London & focus on Bella's perspective adds depth to the story's themes and characters. The film gives Bella more agency, alters the wedding scene, & explores a complex relationship with Godwin creatively.
The Poor Things movie is based on the 1992 book of the same name by author Alasdair Gray, but the film takes liberties with the source material and makes significant changes. Stars: Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo, Vicki Pepperdine, Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael | Written by Tony McNamara | Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos
Ever since he made a splash with 2009’s Dogtooth, Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos has been considered an exciting voice in cinema, resulting in accolades and award nominations for his disturbing and absurdist works. That does not change for Poor Things, an adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel which sees Lanthimos and writer Tony McNamara on fire once more after their previous collaboration with 2018’s The Favourite.
After committing suicide, Bella (Emma Stone) is resurrected by the scarred and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe) – who Bella refers to as God. Initially naïve, Bella’s eagerness to learn more about the outside world clashes with Godwin’s desire to keep her safe. Poor Things is set in the 1880s, reflecting Bella's fight against patriarchal norms. The film's deliberate confusion through color and design enhances Bella's unique arc. Bella's personal development defies conventions, parodying classic monster movie tropes.
Poor Things' time period is distorted by confusing and vibrant storytelling, giving it a unique tone. Based on the novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray, Poor Things tells the story of Bella (Emma Stone), a young woman who has been brought back to life by Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe) in a similar way to Frankenstein's monster in the classic horror film. Baxter gave her the mind of a child and the story chronicles Bella's developing intellect and autonomy as she explores the world around her.
This autonomy is put to the test as Bella falls for Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo) and discovers several physical and philosophical parts of humanity, with Wedderburn desiring...

Poor Things uses black-and-white and color scenes to highlight Bella's emotions and journey in a visually striking way. Bella's freedom is symbolized by the switch to vibrant color, showing her exploration of life and new experiences. The use of fisheye lenses and dynamic camera techniques in Poor Things enhances the portrayal of Bella's emotions and learning.
Poor Things isn't content with sticking with a single aesthetic throughout and instead opts to augment the emotion of certain scenes with a change between black-and-white imagery and vibrant color sequences. While the switch between these two styles isn't the only notable filmmaking technique adopted by Poor Things, it's certainly one of the most obvious. The change from black and white to color part-way through Poor Things is an eye-catching moment, but the beauty of the decision is that the movie manages to retain the same tone and feel despite the sudden overhaul.

Willem Dafoe has been in the entertainment industry for nearly five decades now. Besides being nominated for numerous accolades such as Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards, and Golden Globe Awards, he has received the Volpi Cup for Best Actor. Although he has played some great roles, he is best known for his role as Green Goblin/Norman Osborne in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man film series.
Dafoe most recently appeared in Poor Things, which is nothing short of a cinematic masterpiece. The film, starring Emma Stone in the lead role, is a front-runner at the Academy Awards with 11 nominations this year. While her co-stars have been all praises about her stunning performance in the movie, Dafoe wanted to replace her for one particular scene.

Oppenheimer took home the most golden statues — including director Christopher Nolan’s very first Academy Award — at the 2024 Oscars, which was hosted once again by Jimmy Kimmel.
Christopher Nolan’s J. Robert Oppenheimer biopic led the pack with 13 nominations and ultimately won best picture, best director, best actor (Cillian Murphy), best supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), best cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema) and best original score (Ludwig Göransson). It was followed by Poor Things, which won four awards (including best actress for Emma Stone) and was nominated for 11. Killers of the Flower Moon earned 10 noms but left the show empty-handed, while Barbie was nominated for eight Oscars and won best original song for “I’m Just Ken.”
The 96th Oscars were held on Sunday, March 10 at Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. Those who missed the live telecast can stream the ceremony on demand on Hulu.

The second time I saw "Doctor Strange" in a theater (I liked it enough to watch it more than once), I was seated next to a young boy. I vividly recall the scene where Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) crashes his car on a mountain road and violently flips over several times before landing in a body of water below. There was a brief pause, at which point the boy next to me said (loud enough for me to hear), "I sure wouldn't want that to happen to my Lamborghini!"
Kids sure do say the darndest things. They can also be somewhat sociopathic. It's not because they're all secretly the Antichrist in disguise (although it happens more often than you'd think), it's because they simply don't know any better. This can make things particularly awkward when they're potty training or discover that their genitals have multiple uses, like Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) in "Poor Things.

If you were concerned for Emma Stone and her broken dress following her appearance onstage at tonight’s Oscars to accept the prize for Best Actress, fear not.
“They sewed me back in,” shared the star of Poor Things, Searchlight’s adaptation of the novel by Alasdair Gray. “Right when I came back[stage], they sewed me back in, which was wonderful.”
Stone highlighted the issue with her dress while on stage, sharing that she believed she’d broken it while singing and dancing along to the performance of Barbie tune “I’m Just Ken” by her Oscar-nominated La La Land co-star, Ryan Gosling. Backstage, she affirmed this belief was genuine, adding, “I was so amazed by Ryan and what he was doing, and that number just blew my mind. Emma Stone told fellow best actress nominee Lily Gladstone she was “in awe” of her while accepting the award for best actress at the 2024 Oscars on Sunday night.
Stone acknowledged all of her fellow nominees but took an extra moment to address Gladstone, whom many pundits had expected to win the award after collecting several previous honors for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon. “I share this with you,” she said to Gladstone. “I am in awe of you. And it’s been such an honor to do all this together; I hope we get to do more together.”
Stone won the award for her performance as Bella Baxter in Poor Things, a film for which she also served as producer. Her second collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos, the movie is screenwriter Tony McNamara’s adaptation of the 1992 Frankenstein-inspired novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray.

Updated with Emma Stone win: Poor Things wrapped up its night at the Oscars with a lead actress win for Emma Stone, along with earlier nods for Production Design, Makeup & Hairstyling and Costume Design. See the acceptance speeches above and below.
A clearly emotional Stone thanked director Yorgos Lanthimos for the “gift of a lifetime” for her role as Bella Baxter. This was Stone’s second Oscar win out of four nominations. She also served as a producer on the film.

Emma Stone is now a two-time Oscar winner.
The “Poor Things” actress took home the top title for her latest collaboration with auteur Yorgos Lanthimos. Stone previously won Best Actress in 2017 for Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land.” Stone was formerly nominated for Oscars for “Birdman” and Lanthimos’ “The Favourite.”
“Poor Things” marks Stone’s third collaboration with Lanthimos. The duo are set to work together on upcoming films “Kinds of Kindness” and “Save the Green Planet,” a remake of Jang Joon-hwan’s 2005 sci-fi satire.
Stone plays Bella Baxter in “Poor Things.” Bella is a reanimated (and renamed) woman who, after committing suicide while pregnant, is brought back to life with the brain of her unborn child. Bella explores her turn-of-the-century world and voyages across 1800s Europe. The film is inspired by Scottish author Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel about a woman who drowns herself to escape her abusive husband. The...

“Who is you?” Poor Things protagonist Bella Baxter asks the strange man who has found her in her secluded home. With a self-satisfied smirk and a dodgy, slurring accent, the man entertains Bella by first wearing a goofy hat and then by pinching her between her legs. So pleased is he with the liberties he can take with her body, that the man doesn’t seem to notice Bella’s childish behavior, the way she blows bubbles or speaks in the third person.
All he’s interested in is how Bella seems excited by his presence. And so he saunters away with a smile after answering her question, introducing himself as “Mr. Duncan Wedderburn.”
Duncan thinks that he’s hit the jackpot. “I hate polite society,” he tells Bella (Emma Stone) with flourish. “It’s fucking boring and destroys one’s soul.”
And yet, as Duncan and Bella continue their relationship,...

Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things is nominated for eleven Oscars, including best picture, lead actress and director. The Oscar nominated genre comedy arrives on Hulu today, ahead of the Academy Awards this weekend.
This year’s Oscars ceremony airs on Sunday, March 10.
At the box office, the awards recognition and positive word of mouth drove Poor Things to an incredible $100 million worldwide, a huge success story for arthouse cinema at large.
Emma Stone stars alongside Willem Dafoe in Poor Things from Yorgos Lanthimos (The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Dogtooth), a Frankenstein-like tale based on the 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray. Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, Christopher Abbott, and Mark Ruffalo also star.
Lanthimos’ latest tells “the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn.

The State of the Race
Summer blockbusters “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” are back to vying against each other in this category now that the Academy has switched two-time screenwriter Oscar nominees Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s outrageous based-on-an-unwritten-character scenario from Original back to Adapted.
Also nominated twice for screenwriting, Christopher Nolan painstakingly created a twisty ticking-bomb timeline for “Oppenheimer,” which is adapted from Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin’s lauded tome “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer.” Every word counts as a gamut of real-life characters move in and out of the frame, always centered on the point-of-view of scientist Oppenheimer and...

When production designers Shona Heath and James Price were tasked with designing the dark comedy Poor Things, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar-nominated movie about a woman whose resurrected with her infant’s brain, they had several key decisions to make. For starters, how would they represent the London mansion, which included the laboratory of mad scientist Dr. Baxter, played by Willem Dafoe? The answer turned out to be simple: They’d put human anatomy along the walls and ceiling.

The USC Libraries announced the winners for the 36th annual USC Libraries Scripter Award, which honors the year’s best film and television adaptations, as well as the works on which they are based. This group of academics, industry professionals, and critics (for which I vote) is often predictive of the Adapted Screenplay Oscar race.
For the second year in a row, “Slow Horses” took home the prize for episodic series; Cord Jefferson won the 2024 award for film adaptation; both he and the author of the novel he adapted, Percival Everett, were in attendance. Jefferson thanked Everett for trusting him with his 2001 novel, which he felt was written just for him. “He has managed to mine my novel for the material he needed to make this film,” said Everett, who teaches at USC. “And then I sat back and did nothing. Nominated for eleven Oscars including Best Motion Picture of the Year, director Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things is now available for Digital rental and purchase at home. You can expect the Blu-ray release on March 12, and we’ve learned the film is also headed to Hulu.
Poor Things will begin streaming on Hulu Thursday, March 7, just a few days before we find out how many Academy Awards the Emma Stone-starring film takes home.

This week is notable for bringing two recent big screen releases into our homes, one a horror comedy from the writer of Jennifer’s Body and the other an Oscar nominated genre favorite.
Here’s all the new horror releasing February 27 – March 3, 2024!
For daily reminders about new horror releases, be sure to follow @HorrorCalendar.
Less than one month after being released in theaters, the horror-comedy Lisa Frankenstein is now available at home. You can own or rent the film on Digital starting today.
Directed by Zelda Williams and written by Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer’s Body), Lisa Frankenstein first dug up someone special in movie theaters nationwide on February 9.
Meagan Navarro wrote in her review for Bloody Disgusting, “Billed as a coming-of-rage tale, Lisa Frankenstein instead offers a celebration of outcasts and weirdos.”
“It makes for a sugary sweet, almost wholesome effort held together by a trio of infectiously winsome performances,” Meagan’s review continued.

There has been a lot of bad box office news to go around in the first couple of months of 2024. That said, today brings a welcome little nugget, as Searchlight Pictures' "Poor Things" has officially crossed a pretty significant milestone. The film, which stars Oscar-winner Emma Stone ("La La Land") and was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos ("The Favourite"), has officially topped $100 million worldwide. That makes it one of the most successful Best Picture nominees, financially speaking, heading into Oscar night, which is a good sign for the future. It's also good for the present, so it's good all around.
"Poor Things" has now amassed $32.4 million domestically to go with $69.8 million internationally for a grand total of $102.2 million worldwide. Against a $35 million budget, that makes this a sizable hit and one that has benefited greatly in recent weeks from its several Oscar nominations, most notably that for Best Picture. When the...

One might say Poor Things is an epic culmination for Ed Guiney: It’s a film ten years in the making that lurked in the shadows of the producer’s three other collaborations with director Yorgos Lanthimos (the duo also has a fifth project on the horizon: Kinds of Kindness).
Based on a novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray, Poor Things is Lanthimos’ biggest movie yet. Vivid screenwriting from Tony McNamara is brought to life by vibrant sets, costumes and music with acclaimed performances from Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef and Willem Dafoe. The film took home the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and garnered 11 Oscar nominations last month, the second most of any film behind Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

Actress Emma Stone, who plays the titular character in the acclaimed Yorgos Lanthimos film ‘Poor Things’, revealed that she initially doubted that she would be able to live up to the part. The film, which is based on the novel by Alasdair Gray, talks about a young woman named Bella Baxter in Victorian London, who comes to life through a brain transplant and embarks on a journey of self-discovery.
“I think because I had lived with her in my mind for so long and I was so deeply in love with Bella, it terrified me not to live up to her as a character. I felt like I was failing her in the first week, and failing Yorgos. It was just difficult,” Emma told Variety magazine.

Actors often talk about how freeing it is to play characters that live in the moment — a sentiment that “Poor Things” screenwriter Tony McNamara understands. In writing the character of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a woman who has an infant’s brain implanted in her body, McNamara says he was working with a blank slate.
“The fingerprints of childhood and society weren’t on her as a character,” McNamara tells Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast. “I’m writing someone who just greets experience in a really open, adventurous, optimistic [way]: ‘I wonder what it is. And I don’t have any preconceptions about how I should feel about it, how I should judge it. Anything. I’m just in a constant state of self-creation.’
“There is a kind of wish fulfillment in the movie,” he adds. “Like, What would my experience be if I could let go of all this stuff I carry around?...

“Killers of the Flower Moon” star Lily Gladstone embraces her monumental responsibility as an Oscar nominee, utilizing her platform to advocate for the Indigenous community and hoping to pave the way for more actors like herself.
During a panel conversation at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s Virtuosos Awards, Gladstone — of Siksikaitsitapi and Niimiipuu heritage — addressed the harmful depictions and references to Indians in media, notably mentioning the Kansas City Chiefs the day before their Super Bowl win.
“Honestly, you could hold both teams accountable,” Gladstone tells Variety. “The 49ers are based on the California Gold Rush, which was an incredibly brutal time for California Indians. The story behind the novel is almost as famous as the novel itself: in the summer of 1816, Mary Shelley and her husband Percy Shelley traveled to Lake Geneva on a trip with her stepsister Claire Claremont and Claire’s lover, poet Lord Byron. Because of the abnormally cold weather, the foursome were forced to stay indoors for nearly the entire trip, and to pass the time, Byron proposed a challenge to see who could write the scariest ghost story. Mary, a woman with a taste for the macabre, was inspired by a discussion of galvanism, a scientific theory that electricity could stimulate or create life, to write what she first thought would be a short story: the tale of a young, ambitious student playing God and creating an abomination in the process.
