It was voted on by 791 film critics from across the globe. The adaptation of Alasdair Gray's novel about the evolution of a young woman (Emma Stone) has enjoyed a run of success since premiering at last year's Venice Film Festival, picking up four Oscars. Tony McNamara likes a challenge but when Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos first presented him with Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel by Poor Things to adapt into a script, even the seasoned Australian writer admits he found the material daunting.

Poor Things isn't content with sticking with a single aesthetic throughout and instead opts to augment the emotion of certain scenes with a change between black-and-white imagery and vibrant color sequences. While the switch between these two styles isn't the only notable filmmaking technique adopted by Poor Things, it's certainly one of the most obvious. The change from black and white to color part-way through Poor Things is an eye-catching moment, but the beauty of the decision is that the movie manages to retain the same tone and feel despite the sudden overhaul.

The second time I saw "Doctor Strange" in a theater (I liked it enough to watch it more than once), I was seated next to a young boy. I vividly recall the scene where Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) crashes his car on a mountain road and violently flips over several times before landing in a body of water below. There was a brief pause, at which point the boy next to me said (loud enough for me to hear), "I sure wouldn't want that to happen to my Lamborghini!"

It's not because they're all secretly the Antichrist in disguise (although it happens more often than you'd think), it's because they simply don't know any better. “Who is you?” Poor Things protagonist Bella Baxter asks the strange man who has found her in her secluded home. With a self-satisfied smirk and a dodgy, slurring accent, the man entertains Bella by first wearing a goofy hat and then by pinching her between her legs. So pleased is he with the liberties he can take with her body, that the man doesn’t seem to notice Bella’s childish behavior, the way she blows bubbles or speaks in the third person.

The USC Libraries announced the winners for the 36th annual USC Libraries Scripter Award, which honors the year’s best film and television adaptations, as well as the works on which they are based. This group of academics, industry professionals, and critics (for which I vote) is often predictive of the Adapted Screenplay Oscar race.
For the second year in a row, “Slow Horses” took home the prize for episodic series; Cord Jefferson won the 2024 award for film adaptation; both he and the author of the novel he adapted, Percival Everett, were in attendance. There has been a lot of bad box office news to go around in the first couple of months of 2024. That said, today brings a welcome little nugget, as Searchlight Pictures' "Poor Things" has officially crossed a pretty significant milestone. The film, which stars Oscar-winner Emma Stone ("La La Land") and was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos ("The Favourite"), has officially topped $100 million worldwide. That makes it one of the most successful Best Picture nominees, financially speaking, heading into Oscar night, which is a good sign for the future. Actors often talk about how freeing it is to play characters that live in the moment — a sentiment that “Poor Things” screenwriter Tony McNamara understands. In writing the character of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a woman who has an infant’s brain implanted in her body, McNamara says he was working with a blank slate.
“The fingerprints of childhood and society weren’t on her as a character,” McNamara tells Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast. “I’m writing someone who just greets experience in a really open, adventurous, optimistic [way]: ‘I wonder what it is. And I don’t have any preconceptions about how I should feel about it, how I should judge it. Anything. I’m just in a constant state of self-creation.’
