While some isekai protagonists get transported to new, fun worlds, the grass isn't always greener. Some isekai worlds are dark, brutal, and unforgiving, making the main character wish they could go back home. Dark isekai is a newer addition to the wider genre of isekai, and it doesn't have too many entrants. Most isekai series focus on the brighter side of life and give their characters fun powers in their vibrant new worlds. Dark isekai do the opposite, usually leaving the main character in a harder environment than they can initially handle.
Some characters, like Ainz from Overlord, are perfectly capable of handling the environment they're in and instead choose to be the world's villain. It's not entirely a dark world for Ainz, but it sure is for everyone who isn't his friend. Dark isekai have a unique opportunity of pitting the main character against the world their isekai'd into,...

Shonen manga, especially battle Shonen, usually involve characters who want to get stronger in what they do compared to others. Whether it is martial arts, sports, or even in the field of acting (like the case of Oshi No Ko), the main characters strive to get better at something while aiming to beat their competition. And that’s usually the approach Shonen mangaka have adopted since “working hard to achieve one’s goals and become the best” seems like a good message to their readers.

However, the problem with modern material is that the main characters are already equipped with plot armor and they are written in such a way that they will achieve their goals, no matter what. This is the case, especially for those in the Isekai genre. The MCs are already overpowered and fans merely read about their escapades, basically just annihilating their competition.

Chainsaw Man offers a battle shonen experience like no other with its grotesque themes and power utilization, and other battle-centric series like Hunter x Hunter provide an eccentric cast and fascinating narrative structure to guide the story.
