Exclusive: M.K. Oliver’s debut novel A Sociopath’s Guide to a Successful Marriage is making a splash years before its release, landing high-profile TV and publishing deals. Hulu has put in development a series adaptation of the darkly comedic crime mystery. It will be written by Liz Tigelaar (Little Fires Everywhere) who will serve as showrunner.

Tigelaar and her producing partner Stacey Silverman will executive produce through their Best Day Ever company alongside Oliver. 20th Television, where Tigelaar is based, is the studio.

The TV sale follows a competitive action for the U.S. rights to the manuscript, won by Simon & Schuster, and a preemptive deal with Hemlock Press, Harper Collins in the UK. The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced today the nominations in seven competitive award categories for its inaugural Gotham TV Awards, recognizing a range of series, including Baby Reindeer, Ripley, The Curse, Shōgun, Bodkin, Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Black Twitter: A People’s History as well as performances from Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder in The Curse, Andrew Scott in Ripley, Kristen Wiig in Palm Royale, Richard Gadd in Baby Reindeer, and Lily Gladstone in Under The Bridge, among others. The awards ceremony is set for June 4 in NYC.

Exclusive: ScreenCraft has finalized the lineup for its annual Virtual Writers Summit.

The summit, which is expected to span the entire month of June this year, will feature creatives including Richard Linklater, Issa Lopez, Lulu Wang, Quinta Brunson, Nkechi Okoro Carroll, and Sean Wang.

Typically, the summit has occurred over one weekend. However, this year boasts the largest lineup ever, thus resulting in panels over the course of the month on June 8, 15, 22, and 29.

“This marks the fifth year we have organized our annual writers summit virtually and, undeniably, the strongest lineup we have ever put together,” Thomas Dever, VP of Business Development for Industry Arts, ScreenCraft’s parent company, said in a statement. “We are thrilled to hear from these incredible speakers and bring them together with our audience to educate and inspire.”

Hulu has announced its submissions for the Primetime Emmy Awards for the upcoming crime drama “Under the Bridge.”

Stars Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough will both be submitted for Emmy consideration in supporting actress in a limited series or TV movie, it was revealed to Variety exclusively. The two stars will be vying for one of seven possible slots against possible contenders such as Sandra Oh from “The Sympathizer,” Kali Reis from “True Detective: Night Country” and multiple women from FX’s “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans,” notably Diane Lane.

“Under the Bridge” is an adaptation of Rebecca Godfrey’s gripping book, delving into the true story of 14-year-old Reena Virk, a teen who didn’t return home after attending a party in 1997. The series unfolds through the perspectives of Godfrey (portrayed by Keough) and a local police officer (played by Gladstone), exposing the world of her peers who were implicated in the case.

Hulu’s unveiled the first official photos from Under the Bridge, an upcoming limited series starring Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) and Emmy nominee Riley Keough (Daisy Jones & The Six). The eight-episode series dives into the murder of Reena Virk in 1997 as documented in Rebecca Godfrey’s Under the Bridge: The True Story of the Murder of Reena Virk, published in 2005.

HBO has released a trailer for its new original comedy docuseries “Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show,” which will premiere at the 2024 SXSW festival. Dubbed as his attempt at making a personal “Truman Show,” Jerrod Carmichael shows the world startlingly frank discussions with his family and intimate moments of his personal life. Come for the difficult conversations and stay for Carmichael explaining “twunks” to his father. The series will air on March 29 on HBO and be available to stream on Max, with new episodes of the eight-episode season debuting weekly.

Carmichael is an Emmy-winning comedian from North Carolina whose credits include the NBC sitcom “The Carmichael Show.” His recent comedy special, “Rothaniel,” directed by Bo Burnham, was met with rave reviews. Variety’s annual Showrunners Dinner presented by A+E Studios on Thursday night gathered writers recognized on the publication’s annual TV Producers Impact List, as well as several of this year’s Emmy nominees. In addition, megaproducer Chuck Lorre was honored with Variety’s first Norman Lear Award.

Held at Merois, on the rooftop of the Pendry West Hollywood, the Variety Showrunners Dinner included a very funny acceptance speech by Lorre, who pointed out some of the similarities — but more humorously, the differences — between the two icons.

“I think everyone here understands the enormity and significance of Norman Lear’s body of work,” Lorre began. “So in accepting this award, I don’t think it’s false modesty to take a moment and focus on the very large differences between his career and my own. For starters, Norman Lear began his career writing for Hollywood legends like Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

Jessica Chastain started 2023 by telling Andy Cohen on “Watch What Happens Live” that she was open to reading a script for the film adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s bestselling novel “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.” The Oscar-winning actor has long been fans’ top choice to play the title character, a reclusive old Hollywood star who reflects on her life during a final interview with an unknown journalist.

Netflix first announced a feature film version of the 2017 novel — about a fictional Old Hollywood movie star who gives her final interview — back in 2022. Writer Liz Tigelaar (who’s worked on “Brothers & Sisters” and created the CW series “Life Unexpected”) was attached to pen the script, with Leslye Headland (“Russian Doll” co-creator and “The Acoylte” showrunner) attached to direct.

“I love how excited the fans are,” Chastain told E! News in a recent interview. “When I was working on Broadway, every single day, they’d be outside, when I was signing, with the books. I just love how wonderful that fan base is.”

The late Norman Lear’s life and legacy took center stage tonight at the 2023 Sentinel Awards at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills.

The awards, which celebrate the storytellers behind some of the year’s most impactful stories, heard a statement from Lyn Lear read at the start of the show by Marty Kaplan, founding director of the Norman Lear Center.

“I would have been there tonight if not for the passing of our beloved Norman. He was so proud of the work of The Lear Center and Hollywood Health and Society. And he would not have wanted all of us to mourn. He would want us to celebrate the important shows you are honoring tonight, and most of all… he would want us to laugh.”

The night celebrated Lear’s lasting impact on television and the world, underlining his strong advocacy that television and storytelling makes a difference.

In a sad bit of coincidence, the Hollywood, Health & Society at the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center honored its 2023 Sentinel Awards winners on Wednesday night, just hours after the passing of its namesake and inspiration, the legendary Norman Lear.

Emmy-winning comedian and writer Larry Wilmore hosted the event and introduced this year’s 11 winners, including writers behind the series “Mrs. Davis,” “Fleishman is in Trouble” and “Tiny Beautiful Things.” But before the awards were handed out, Wilmore took a moment to pay tribute to Lear. And remarks from Lear’s wife, Lyn, were shared with the audience.

The 2023 Sentinel Awards were handed out tonight Awards at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills, and winners included writers for such TV series as Grey’s Anatomy, Station 19, Superman & Lois, The Diplomat and Tiny Beautiful Things. See the full list below.

Presented by Hollywood, Health & Society at the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center, the Sentinel Awards recognize writers for meaningful and accurate portrayals onscreen on such timely topics as abortion, systemic racism, climate change and mental health. Larry Wilmore hosted the ceremony, which came the night that Lear died at 101.

Attendees heard a statement from Lyn Lear read at the start of the show by Marty Kaplan, founding director of the Norman Lear Center.

“I would have been there tonight if not for the passing of our beloved Norman,” she wrote. “He was so proud of the work of The Lear Center and Hollywood Health and Society.

Hollywood, Health and Society at the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center toasted its 2023 Sentinel Awards winners on Wednesday at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills, where Lear’s life took center stage after his passing was announced earlier in the day at the age of 101.

Lear’s wife Lyn sent a statement to be read aloud to Sentinel attendees at the beginning of the show by founding director of the Norman Lear Center Marty Kaplan, as she wrote, “I would have been there tonight if not for the passing of our beloved Norman. He was so proud of the work of The Lear Center and Hollywood, Health and Society. And he would not have wanted all of us to mourn. He would want us to celebrate the important shows you are honoring tonight, and most of all, he would have want us to laugh.”

Following the resolution of the writers’ strike, Variety’s “A Night in the Writers’ Room” returns Nov. 30 in-person, featuring three panels moderated by Variety’s esteemed journalists, Michael Schneider and Emily Longeretta, with this year’s Emmy-contending writers in the drama, comedy and limited series categories.

A television adaptation of Lucy Foley’s best-selling novel “The Guest List” is in development at Hulu from “Little Fires Everywhere” and “Tiny Beautiful Things” creator Liz Tigelaar.

“On a remote island off a rugged coast, guests attend a dazzling celebrity wedding. But with a storm brewing, the picture perfect affair darkens as the guests and their shared histories dangerously collide — and then the lights go out. And a body is found,” the logline states. “As old secrets are brought to the surface, and the mysteries swirl — the question remains, who among these people deserved to die? And who had something to kill for?”

Tigelaar, who will serve as the eight-to-10 episode limited series’ writer and showrunner, will executive produce alongside Foley, Stacey Silverman and Best Day Ever Productions.

Tigelaar, Silverman and Best Day Ever are currently under an overall deal at ABC Signature, with several projects in development.

The news comes as the broader IP market has only grown frothier amid the dual Hollywood strikes, which ground production to a halt and left the industry with little else to sell.

Netflix announced in March 2022 that it's producing a movie version of the bestselling novel "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The book, released in 2017, became a major bestseller, thanks in part to amazing word of mouth on social media. On June 29, the streamer announced that "Russian Doll" co-creator Leslye Headland will direct the film with Liz Tigelaar handling the script, so it seemed like a casting announcement was surely imminent.

The messiness of her Emmy-nominated role of Clare Pierce was part of what attracted Kathryn Hahn to “Tiny Beautiful Things,” the eight-episode drama series that was adapted from Cheryl Strayed’s 2012 novel based on her own experiences taking over an anonymous advice column in a literary magazine.

The series, created by Liz Tigelaar for ABC Signature, Hulu and Hello Sunshine, braids together Clare’s adult, teenage and childhood timelines, sketching a portrait of a woman in her 40s who is at loose ends after a painful divorce, but also flashing back to her younger self abandoning her dreams of becoming a writer in the aftermath of a traumatic childhood and the loss of her mother to cancer.

In Hulu’s Tiny Beautiful Things, Kathryn Hahn plays Clare, a reimagined version of Cheryl Strayed from Strayed’s memoir of the same name. Working on the story, which examines grief and family close-up, has left Hahn “forever changed” she said on Tuesday morning, shortly after receiving an Emmy nomination for her role.

However, as SAG-AFTRA talks continue, with a possible actors’ strike on the horizon in addition to the ongoing writers’ strike, Hahn said, “Everything feels very bittersweet, doesn’t it?” She recalled her love for the writers’ room on Tiny Beautiful Things and writer-EPs Liz Tigelaar and Cheryl Strayed, adding, “You know, no matter what, we’re all 100 percent behind the writers, and I am filled with gratitude. And we’ll continue to shout their names since they are unable to for a bit.”

Jonnie Davis, the president of ABC Signature, has stepped down from his position. After leading the studio since 2019, Davis will be leaving to figure out his “next creative challenge.”

During his time with the production studio, Davis worked on shows such as ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” FX’s “Fleishman Is in Trouble” and Hulu’s “This Fool.” A replacement for Davis will be chosen at a later date.

Eric Schrier, the president of Disney Television Studios and Global Original Television Strategy, told his team on Friday.

“While news like this is never easy, I’m very confident in the leadership team we have in place, and I’m excited to work with them more closely until next steps are determined,” Schrier wrote. He also referred to Davis as an “incredibly valued colleague” and a “fantastic creative partner.”

The move, however, is not a precursor to merging ABC Signature and 20th Television and, despite a multitude of rumors, they will continue to operate as two separate divisions. The company is currently searching for a replacement for Davis.

Davis’ departure is a surprise given how close he has been to Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Dana Walden.

When he moved from 20th Television to ABC Signature, he was able to lure a handful of big-name talents across with him include Drew Goddard and Octavia Spencer.
