2025 marks the 40th anniversary of director Stuart Gordon‘s 1985 classic Re-Animator (watch it Here) – and to celebrate the occasion, Ignite Films is giving Re-Animator a 4K release! There will be four editions of this release – an ultimate limited edition box set, a deluxe edition set, a 4K Uhd standard edition, and a Blu-ray standard edition – and all are available for pre-order at This Link. The street date is April 3rd. Back in September, it was announced that Arrow Video would be releasing a number of titles in 4K Blu-ray remasters. One of those titles was the cult hit from the 1988, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark. The new physical media release will hit retailers in a few days on November 12. Details of the special features and technical specs are now revealed, courtesy of Blu-ray.com.

Coming soon from filmmaker Douglas Schulze (The Dark Below, Hellmaster, Mimesis), Thorns immediately caught our attention last year, and Fangoria now shares some fresh imagery.

Schulze tells Fangoria, “The intention was to make a ‘monster’ movie as a kind of homage to the great horror cinema of the ’70s and ’80s. John Carpenter’s The Thing, Ridley Scott’s Alien, William Friedkin’s The Exorcist and, of course, Clive Barker’s Hellraiser were all inspiring.”

Coming soon from filmmaker Douglas Schulze is the indie horror movie Thorns, and Gruesome Magazine has debuted the official trailer this week.

Horror icon Doug Bradley (Hellraiser) makes an appearance in Thorns, and what’s interesting about this one is that it looks like a direct-to-video Hellraiser sequel from back in the day. The film is of course not actually connected to the franchise, but it seems to be a love letter to the long-running saga that made Doug Bradley a household name among horror fans.

The holidays may be over by the time January rolls around, but Arrow Video will still have gifts in store for horror fans with Blu-ray releases that include Dario Argento's The Cat O' Nine Tails, Stuart Gordon's Re-Animator, and Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes.

We have release details and images of Arrow Video's January Blu-ray releases below. The Cat O' Nine Tails is a limited edition item, and while Re-Animator and The Hills Have Eyes were previously released as limited editions by Arrow Video, they will be hitting shelves as re-releases in January (with slightly less goodies, but still plenty of bonus features and eye-popping 4K restorations to enjoy).

Earlier this summer I wrote a review for Arrow’s release of The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. I didn’t review the film itself because I assumed the readers who might click on the review already knew the film well and were mostly concerned with whether or not it was worth picking up another copy of the film. I’m going to make the same assumption about Re-Animator, perhaps the only film in the history of cinema to ask the MPAA to surrender its R-rating so it could be released in unrated form (actually, re-released).

The film itself is a horror-comedy classic based on one of H.P. Lovecraft’s lesser known works entitled Herbert West: Re-Animator. At the time of its theatrical release it was considered cutting edge in the area of gore as well as altogether outrageousness. I suspect Lovecraft, who was so adept...

Released in 1985, Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator remains the grandest of Grand Guignols, a viscerally entertaining comedy that is just grindhouse enough for fans of Blood Feast and arthouse enough for connoisseurs of Francis Bacon’s more grisly canvases.

Originally scripted for Chicago’s Organic Theater Company by Gordon and co-writers Dennis Paoli and William Norris, Re-Animator was based on H. P. Lovecraft’s short story, Herbert West – Re-Animator, first published in 1922. Set in the blandly generic college town of Arkham, Massachusetts, the action revolves in and around the classrooms of stately Miskatonic University’s medical school and the sterilized atmosphere of the academy’s dank morgue evoked so well by Mac Ahlberg’s lush cinematography.

Following its initial announcement last year, EW reports that German distributor Cinespectral Films will release Elvira, Mistress of the Dark on a three-disc Blu-ray set (confirmed by Cinespectral to be region free) on April 24th. Featuring a 4K scan of the movie's initial interpositive, this home media release is limited to 3,000 items and will include two Blu-ray discs and a Pal DVD.

Collectors can choose between three different cover art choices (including the new artwork below by Andreas Marschall), with each option limited to 1,000 items. EW reveals that the Blu-ray bonus features will include the following:

Yeon Sang-ho’s apocalypse thriller won the Cheval Noir Award for Best Feature and the Audience Award for Best Asian Feature as the festival came to an end in Montreal.

RedPeter Film’s Train To Busan is on a roll after it hit 10million admissions in its native South Korea on August 7. The film premiered in the Midnight Screenings section in Cannes and has sparked remake offers. Well Go USA Entertainment released it in the Us in July.

Organisers at the 20th Fantasia International Film Festival said the event, which boasted 19 world premieres, 209 screening and 11 Vr films, attracted more than 100,000 spectators.

During the 2016 edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival, director Guillermo del Toro was given the prestigious Cheval Noir award for his exceptional career in the cinema of the fantastic up to this point. This award was handed out after a screening of Creature Designers: The Frankenstein Complex. GdT then stuck around and gave one of his delightful and quite substantial lectures of the art, philosophy, and nuts and bolts of designing monsters for the big screen.  The entire lecture/discussion was moderated by former Fangoria Editor Tony Timpone, and it includes about 20 minutes of questions from the audience. With Halloween in the air, we thought it would be fun to reach out to the horror genre's biggest and brightest stars - both legends in the industry and up-and-coming superstars - to ask them two quick questions: What's your biggest fear, and what's your favorite scary movie? Read on for the results!

Some of the results will make you laugh. Some will make you shiver... and some, well some are just too funny for words. Sit back and get ready to hear from the likes of Anne Rice, John Carpenter, Robert Englund, the "Ghost Adventures" crew, cast members from "The Walking Dead," George A. Now in its 11th year, the New York City Horror Film Festival runs November 14-17, and along with the lineup, they've announced some of the special guests who'll be in attendance this go-round.

Giving a platform to new and independent international horror films, the New York City Horror Film Festival (Nychff) returns for another grand weekend, November 14–17, 2013, on the twin screens of the Tribeca Cinemas at 54 Varick Street, just south of Canal.

Honoring the career of Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator, From Beyond, Nevermore), this year's festival is put together by Fangoria’s Tony Timpone and Ronnie Hein, and filmmakers Alan Rowe Kelly and Bart Mastronardi are among the guest presenters.

Things kicks off Thursday, November 14, at 7 pm with a gala opening night Us premiere screening honoring Troma’s fortieth anniversary with their latest feature, Return To Nuke ‘Em High: Vol. 1. Director Lloyd Kaufman will be in attendance...

The 11th Annual New York City Horror Film Festival will be taking place next month and a number of screenings and special events have been announced, including appearances from Stuart Gordon and Lloyd Kaufman:

‘Curse of Chucky’ has left its spell on audiences at the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal. After making its North American debut at Fantasia on July 31, the horror thriller yesterday won the festival’s Audience Award for Best International Feature. A Q&A with ‘Chucky’ creator-director Don Mancini, along with the sequel’s stars Fiona Dourif, Danielle Bisutti and Chantal Quesnelle followed the Fantasia screening. The Q&A session was moderated by Fangoria’s Tony Timpone. This year’s Fantasia International Film Festival has come to a close and we have a list of award winners, including Big Bad Wolves and Curse of Chucky:

Montreal – Thursday August 8th, 2013 - After Tuesday night’s sold-out screening of the Canadian premiere of The World’S End, presented by director Edgar Wright and actor Nick Frost, the Fantasia International Film Festival can confirm record attendance numbers this year, boasting more than 125,000 festival-goers for its 17th edition, surpassing last year’s record of 109,000 (a 15% increase). Over the course of its three-week film marathon, it presented over 131 features from 31 countries and more than 220 shorts from across the globe.

Fantasia’s 2013 edition opened with the North American Premiere of Takashi Miike’s Shield Of Straw and closed with the Canadian Premiere of Edgar Wright’s The World’S End. A lifetime achievement award was given to Polish filmmaker Andrzej Zulawski. World...

Official Opening Night Film – Takashi Miike’s Shield of Straw

Hot off its screening in official completion at the Cannes Film Festival, Takashi Miike’s riveting crime thriller Shield of Straw will be kicking off Fantasia’s 2013 edition with its first screening on the North American continent. Shield of Straw stars Takao Osawa, Nanako Matsushima, and Tatsuya Fujiwara. Fantasia’s 1997 screening of Fudoh marked the first time that a Miike film had ever been shown in North America, making it all the more joyous to open our 2013 festival with his latest work.

Last week we shared the first group of films and events slated for this year's Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, the largest genre-themed film festival on the planet. In addition to dozens of film entries, many of which are making their world premieres at Fantasia, there will also be some major one-of-a-kind events at the fest, the first of which you can read about in our previous update. But now, here's the latest crop of films and events added to Fantasia's schedule: Official Opening Night Film: Takashi Miike’s Shield of Straw (North American Premiere) This is the second time Miike has chosen Fantasia to debut a film in North America at this fest; the last was Fudoh in 1997. Rated X: A Night with Bryan Singer The acclaimed genre director will engage the audience in an hour-long discussion on his films, career and the genre in general, moderated by Fangoria veteran Tony Timpone.

As the movie industry heads the way of the digital download, one of our oldest friends - the VHS tape - is becoming more and more collectible. Some people even get a bit obsessive about their collecting. Such is the case with Adjust Your Tracking: The Untold Story of the VHS Collector.

Adjust Your Tracking: The Untold Story of the VHS Collector is a feature-length documentary directed by Dan Kinem and Levi Peretic that sheds light on the growing VHS culture and the community of collectors that still cherish what many refer to as a "dead format." It is a passion project made by true lovers of the format for not only people who love VHS, but also for people who can remember having to rewind a movie before they could watch it and for people who remember the glorious days of going to the video...

Last April, Dan Kinem launched a Kickstarter campaign to get additional funding to finish the documentary Adjust Your Tracking: The Untold Story of the VHS Collector. For VHS collectors, Dan is pretty well known. He is part of the VHShitfest YouTube channel that published a lot of clips from obscure VHS tapes as well as some VHS hunts they used to go on. The Kickstarter campaign was a success and the doc is done. A new trailer has been released and  it features interviews with Lloyd Kaufman, Sam Sherman, Fred Vogel, Tony Timpone, and tons of others.

The film will be premiering at Texas Frightmare Weekend this weekend and has screenings for Severed,  a VHS swap meet, and Days of the Dead in Indianapolis. The film is also looking to book a U.S. tour this summer so it may be coming to a town near you.

Debbie Rochon is an incredible ambassador for the horror genre and one of the most recognizable faces in the world of indies. Rochon has made an incredible career in horror and is once again being recognized for her accomplishments!

Rochon is the inaugural Ingrid Pitt Memorial Award winner, an accolade named for horror star Ingrid Pitt, who worked in over 30 films. She co-starred with Sir Christopher Lee in The Wicker Man (1973) and The House that Dripped Blood (1970). She also starred in Hammer's Countess Dracula and with horror legend Peter Cushing in Hammer's The Vampire Lovers. She passed away too soon in 2011. The Ingrid Pitt Memorial Award is presented in conjunction with The Estate of Ingrid Pitt, filmmaker/producer Kevin Sean Michaels and event coordinator Stacy Pippi Hammon.

Debbie Rochon is the perfect honoree for this award. Congrats, D-Ro!

Chicago – Stuart Gordon’s “Re-Animator” is a gore masterpiece, one of the best horror movies of its type ever made. It is pure lunacy, the kind of movie that will be just as shocking to audiences decades from now as it was when audiences first saw a severed head sexually molest a captive woman. “Re-Animator” brilliantly reimagines the “Frankenstein” myth of bringing what has passed back to life in all its gruesome potential. And the new Blu-ray features a well-mastered HD transfer along with some great special features.

Rating: 5.0/5.0

There’s little need to overly polish “Re-Animator.” It’s a film for which a bit of grit and grain to the picture seems appropriate. And so the modestly remastered transfer on the Blu-ray makes for a good fit. It’s nothing you’re going to use to show off your TV but it looks right for the movie.
