The most controversial film of 2024 has already been released and is attracting criticism from all sides. Written and directed by the visionary filmmaker Alex Garland (Ex Machina), Civil War has proven to be a massive hit for the A24. Civil War has everything you need including striking visuals, a gripping story, and complex characters. While there are people from both sides of the political aisle criticizing the film for not picking a side, I think that Garland did a wonderful job at showing us a broken America without blaming any political party for it.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Civil War.A24's film Civil War had several jaw-dropping moments, but one of the most intense contained a startling question for the protagonists from Jesse Plemons' character: "What kind of American are you?" Civil War chronicles the story of a divided America that is torn between a series of secessionist movements and an authoritarian government. As a group of journalists attempts to cross state lines to interview the president about the ongoing war, they find danger at every turn as each stop holds new enemies who have their own ideas about who they consider a "true American."

The film was directed and written by Alex Garland, who also directed the 2014 film Ex Machina and the 2018 film Annihilation. Civil War hit theaters in April 2024 by A24 and achieved critical success, grossing a $25.7 million box office on its opening weekend and $122.6 million worldwide, becoming A24's second highest-grossing movie.

Alex Garland's "Civil War" was a box office hit, but it was also one of the most polarizing movies of the year. Some folks praised the movie (you can read our positive review right here), while others seemed perturbed and even downright annoyed by it. Garland's script deliberately remains neutral about the fictional civil war that engulfs the film, primarily because the film's main characters — a gaggle of war correspondents — also remain neutral. They don't take sides; they just want to get the story. In my humble opinion, this is a feature, not a bug, but I can also completely understand why it bothers some folks.

Civil War director Alex Garland clarifies his recent commentary surrounding his retirement. Civil War is an upcoming political thriller surrounding a dystopian future America in which military-embedded journalists face to reach DC before rebel factions overtake the White House. Garland steps in to write and direct Civil War, which features a leading cast including Nick Offerman, Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Jefferson White, and Nelson Lee.

As per IndieWire, Garland has cleared the air surrounding his recent retirement remarks. Check out Garland’s statement below:

“What I said is I’m going to take a break from directing for the foreseeable future. How that could get extrapolated as what pride I do or do not feel in this movie. I just don’t see the connecting thread. I said I’m going to stop directing for the foreseeable future. Why would a statement like that be taken and picked over or interpreted to that degree?...

Nick Offerman plays the Potus in the dystopian action film Civil War, but although some liken his character to Donald Trump, the actor didn’t think about him during filming.

“Honestly, no,” Offerman told Deadline during the film’s premiere. “When you see the movie, it’s so unattached to anything in modern politics, not only in our country but any country. It’s like doing a play where I’m playing a baseball player, and people say, ‘Did you ever think of your favorite team, the Cubs?’ And I say, ‘No, it’s a brilliant piece of fiction.'”

He continued, “From the get-go, it clearly wasn’t based on anything in reality, and so, that’s a distraction, and my job is to immediately say, ‘Who is this guy? And how can I best serve Alex [Garland’s] vision.'”

Episode 7 of “Ahsoka” just dropped on Disney+, and with it, a surprise guest appearance from a Star Wars legend.

The series has featured many characters familiar to franchise fans, including live-action counterparts of the title character, Ahsoka Tano and also Sabine Wren, Hera Syndulla, and Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Genevieve O’Reilly, who portrayed Mon Mothma in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” as well as “Andor,” reprises her role in “Ahsoka.” Mon Mothma has an important role in Episode 7, and facilitates the return of beloved franchise figure.

So much of Ahsoka‘s third episode feels like classic Star Wars, from Sabine’s blind training nodding back to A New Hope to the space battle that combines elements from both the Original and Prequel Trilogies for one of the best dogfights ever made for Disney+. Star Wars Celebration 2023 has so far been especially exciting for fans of the animated side of the universe. "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" and "Star Wars Rebels" creator Dave Filoni was revealed to be directing a live-action "Star Wars" movie, set between the events of "Return of the Jedi" and "The Force Awakens." And while the film is still in early development, Filoni also brought a brand new trailer for his upcoming live-action series "Ahsoka," which will continue the storyline of "Star Wars Rebels."

When animated properties in the "Star Wars" universe make a jump into live-action, it tends to make big waves. Sometimes, though, those ripples into live-action can be a lot more subtle. When a show based on a character like Ahsoka Tano comes out, it's no surprise that we'll be seeing animated characters from her past adventures. Sabine Wren, Hera Syndulla, Grand Admiral Thrawn, and even Chopper...

The first teaser trailer for the upcoming Star Wars series Ahsoka debuted at the 2023 Star Wars Celebration in London. In addition to Rosario Dawson as the titular character, the teaser features many of the key players and confirmed the series will launch on Disney+ in August 2023.

The minute-and-a-half trailer offers a quick look at Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo) as Hera Syndulla, Natasha Liu Bordizzo (The Society) as Sabine Wren, and Rogue One‘s Genevieve O’Reilly returning as Mon Mothma. Ray Stevenson plays Baylan Skoll, Ivanna Sakhno is Shin Hati, Maurice Irvin is Senator Mawood, Jacqueline Antaramian is Senator Rodrigo, Nelson Lee is Senator Xiono, and Erica Duke is Gran Senator.

Quiver Distribution has acquired “The Wheel,” a relationship drama about a young couple on the brink of divorce. That film is from Steve Pink, the co-writer of “High Fidelity” and the director of “Hot Tub Time Machine” and “About Last Night.” It premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

Quiver will distribute the film on July 22, 2022. It stars Amber Midthunder (Hulu’s upcoming “Prey”) and Taylor Gray (“Star Wars: Rebels”). Bethany-Anne Lind (“Reprisal”), Nelson Lee (“Stargirl”), Carly Nykanen (“Bosch”), and Kevin Pasdon (“Dexter: New Blood”) round out the cast, with a script from Trent Atkinson (“Home and Away”).

Here’s wishing you the bluest sky, Better Things. FX said today that the fifth and final season of its comedy written, directed and produced by and star Pamela Adlon will premiere at 10 p.m. Monday, February 28. It also will stream on Hulu.

The FX Productions show’s ending run focuses on “the road ahead” for Sam Fox (Adlon), so devoted to her life as a working actor and single mother as she navigates three coming-of-age daughters, the challenges of her chosen career and her mother’s increasing signs of aging — as well as her own. As each of the Fox women head into the next phase of their life, they are inspired to re-evaluate themselves, learn from the past and find their own direction.

Despite only being 24 years old, Walker (Taylor Gray) and Albee (Amber Midthunder) head into the woods from their Los Angeles existence to try to save their eight-year marriage. Well, he’s trying to save their marriage. To look at their interactions is to wonder why Albee hadn’t left years ago. We catch glimpses of a smile every now and then, but mostly her head is buried in her phone or coldly lamenting why Walker has taken her to the middle of nowhere to read a self-help book that she doesn’t believe can fix what’s broken. And maybe his desire to try is less about optimism than it is delusion. Maybe their union isn’t what’s broken; it’s them. To fix that means confronting even worse pain.

Director Steve Pink and screenwriter Trent Atkinson know the willingness to actually confront it is virtually non-existent in situations like this.

While the film’s plot is being kept under wraps, it has been described as “a new take on the meta-human sci-fi genre.” Scripted by Nick Brown, it will be the first in a franchise of low-budget, high-concept science-fiction films made by Le Han’s newly formed outfit, RedOne Studios. One of the most succinct, yet heavily weighted lines of dialogue in cinema history is a three-syllable call to death: “Time to die,” as Rutger Hauer’s Roy Batty commands Deckard in Blade Runner. Hawaiian filmmaker Christopher Makoto Yogi’s I Was a Simple Man makes its own attempt at this profundity, attempting to sum up the big goodbye in one epigrammatic phrase. “Dying isn’t simple is it?” is spoken––murmured gently, more like––no less than three times across the film, and by the end, Yogi’s work seems to have offered a resolution to that question, although viewers may beg to differ.

Ah, death. You can’t stop what’s coming, and equally, you can’t stop art film directors conjuring up all their poetic means to give this subject its due. Yogi has switched tack for his second feature, his first to premiere in the U.

“Dying isn’t simple, is it?” That question is asked at three separate points in “I Was a Simple Man,” and with each repetition, it sounds slightly less rhetorical, less worldly-wise, more loaded with anxious uncertainty. Christopher Makoto Yogi’s hushed, ruminative study of an elderly man’s last days in Oahu doesn’t quite settle on an answer either. It considers the troubling weight of impending death on the victim — as failing health, glitching memory and drifting ghosts of the past combine to disorienting effect — as well as on his burdened, emotionally conflicted family. Yet there’s serene peace here amid the trauma: At the film’s most lyrical points, mortality doesn’t seem a threat or a ticking clock, so much as a breeze to which you eventually bend. It might help, of course, to be surrounded by the gracious greenery and oceanic soundtrack of Oahu, to which...

Actress Amber Midthunder, who is a regular on the CW series Roswell, New Mexico and previously co-starred in FX’s Legion, stars in The Wheel, an indie feature, which she also produced. Steve Pink is the director and also produced the pic. Pink is known for films like Hot Tub Time Machine 1&2, 2014’s About Last Night, and co-wrote the original High Fidelity film. Midthunder co-stars alongside Taylor Gray, whose credits include Star Wars Rebels and American Princess. The Wheel centers on Albee and Walker, a couple on the verge of divorce. Married at 16, they’re now 24 and miserable. Albee wants out, while Walker wants to make it work – no matter the damage. This is their Hail Mary; a weekend in the mountains to work through a book that might save their relationship via total, brutal honesty. Nelson Lee (Mulan), Bethany Anne Lind (Ozark), and Kevin Pasdon (New Amsterdam) round out the cast.

Disney’s live-action take on its 1998 Oscar-nominated animated classic Mulan has finally been set for a China release on September 11. A new poster with the date was released today on the studio’s official Weibo account with a note that said, “Looking forward to meeting you and witnessing the blooming of Mulan together!” The Niki Caro-directed film will screen in 2D, 3D and IMAX (see the full poster below).

The September 11 date falls one week after the China release of Christopher Nolan’s Tenet on September 4 which is also when Disney+ gets Mulan in the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia and the major European markets where the streaming service is up and running. In markets where the studio currently has no announced launch plans for Disney+, Mulan will go theatrically. That includes Eastern and Central Europe as well as some parts of Asia and elsewhere.

There are some critical RSVPs — and seemingly some Mia characters? — in the first photos from the climax of DC’s Stargirl‘s Season 1 finale.

The two-part finale kicks off with “Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. Part One” (streaming Monday, Aug. 3 on DC Universe, then airing Tuesday, Aug. 4 on The CW), in which Courtney (played by Brec Bassinger), Pat (Luke Wilson) and the team regroup to figure out their next steps, all with the Isa hot on their trail. Meanwhile, Rick (Cameron Gellman) makes a breakthrough, and the team prepares for a showdown with the Isa.

The next DC Universe original live action series is Stargirl! Not as edgy as Titans, nor as weird as our beloved Doom Patrol, Stargirl looks like a celebration of superheroics, and one that will explore the legacy of the first team of heroes in comic book history, the Justice Society of America. On Monday night, Disney had the world premiere of their forthcoming live-action version of the classic animated feature Mulan in Los Angeles and while some were expecting it to follow the lead of major festivals and events closing due to coronavirus fears, the premiere went on as planned and it was filled with red carpet glam and enthusiasm as any Hollywood premiere — but there were discreet precautions taken by the Dolby Theater as well as the attendees.

There were the normal security checks around the Hollywood and Highland center including officials randomly inspecting cars as they entered the garage and metal detectors. On top of that, there were hand sanitizing stations placed throughout the red carpet area and the Dolby Theater.
