Could Marvel be trying to get in on some of that indie popularity? With Sean Baker’s Neon release “Anora” running away with five Oscars last weekend, including the top honor of Best Picture, big Hollywood studios like Disney may want some of its own fare to have that independent touch. Such is the case it seems for its upcoming entry in the MCU, “Thunderbolts,” starring Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Lewis Pullman, Wyatt Russell, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Speaking in a recent interview with Empire, Pugh said of the tone the film “ended up becoming this quite badass indie, A24-feeling assassin movie with Marvel superheroes.”

And while A24 and “Anora” studio Neon are decidedly not “rivals,” as Neon CEO Tom Quinn recently said (Neon instead counts Netflix as their “biggest competitor” for acquisition titles), could Marvel be trying to square off with A24?

Following the lackluster response to Captain America 4, the MCU is now preparing for its next release in the form of Thunderbolts*. Marketing is now in full-swing for the upcoming team-up movie, with a new trailer recently dropping online. However, the movie has seemingly opted for a strange marketing strategy.

In the latest trailer, the marketing has opted to highlight one aspect of the movie that is commonly seen in trailers for A24 movies. However, a film from the multi-billion dollar MCU choosing the same strategy seems like a desperate move for the franchise. Here is what fans are saying about the latest trailer for Thunderbolts* and why I cannot defend the MCU anymore.

Thunderbolts* is the upcoming thirty-sixth installment in the MCU and the final entry in its fifth phase.

"The Avengers are not coming. Who will keep people safe?" These guys? Doubt it. Marvel has debuted a wacky joke (or not?) trailer for Thunderbolts*, the kooky anti-hero MCU movie kicking off the summer movie season on May 2nd. This whole trailer is a riff on A24's trailers with the same style & title cards. A ragtag group of bad guys is sent on covert missions for the American government. Marvel has released a new teaser for their next movie, Thunderbolts*!

The new minute-long teaser clip shares some of the cast and crew’s past indie credits, seemingly trying to give the movie a lesser-than big Marvel blockbuster look.

The latest preview for “Thunderbolts*” touts the Marvel movie’s connection to another cinematic universe — that of indie film favorite A24.

The new clip ditches Marvel’s traditional sweeping orchestrations and big action setpieces in favor of slick techno music and title cards highlighting that many of the film’s stars, creatives and artisans have previously worked on A24 films.

First revealed by Letterboxd, the “exclusive first look” intercuts shots of Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in their Marvel gear with their A24 acting credits.

The teaser gives the Marvel Studios logo an A24-esque makeover and features stylized cards for “the editor of ‘Minari'” (Harry Yoon) and “the writers and director of ‘Beef'” (director Jake Schreier and co-writers Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo). “The Green Knight” cinematographer Andrew Droz Palermo and “Hereditary” production designer Grace Yun also get a shoutout, with “Everything Everywhere All At Once...

A new “Thunrderbolts*” trailer dropped Friday, and it this time, the Marvel Studios blockbuster took a surprising approach to its own material: It wants more indie cred.

In the trailer exclusive to Letterboxd, the 65-second spot highlights the behind-the-scenes creative team’s credentials across some of the decades most successful indie films, from “Minari” to “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” In other words, the Marvel film began marketing itself as an A24 movie.

There's also heaps of never-before-seen footage from the next MCU movie, including Yelena Belova coming face-to-face with herself, Bob's feet starting to float above the ground, and Bucky punching a guy...in a chicken costume?!

Unless Marvel Studios is majorly misleading us with Thunderbolts*'s marketing campaign, this looks like unlike anything we've seen from them before. There have been rumblings for several months that CIA Director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is the new owner of Avengers Tower. The building was sold way back in 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming, though Marvel Studios has waited until Thunderbolts* to reveal who bought it from Tony Stark.

The latest Thunderbolts* trailer confirmed that Val owns the building and that she's making some changes to it, adding a structure with a striking similarity to The Sentry's Watchtower on top.

Talking to Empire Online, filmmaker Jake Schreier confirmed Avengers Tower has now been renamed the "Watchtower" and teased, "We know what that tower means. Who’s the person you would least like to own that tower, that means so much to so many people? Can you use that as a symbol of things taking a darker turn?"

Part of that darker turn with be Val's man-made superhero The Sentry unleashing hell on New York City as The Void.

"Monsters have overrun the zoo..." Viva Pictures is releasing a fun animated comedy movie called Night of the Zoopocalypse in theaters this weekend (starting March 7th). This flick premiered at the 2024 Sitges Film Festival in Spain (where I also saw it) last year. It's "from the mind of Clive Barker" but it's actually a "horror" movie for kids - it's very tame and really all about how these animals save their zoo from monsters. It's good! Bring your kids and have an amusing time at the cinema. A wolf and mountain lion team up when a meteor unleashes a virus turning zoo animals into zombies. They join forces with other survivors to rescue the zoo and stop the deranged mutant leader from spreading the virus. It's a horror movie made for kids (rated PG!), about zoo animals who have to save the day and stop a zombie virus from taking over.

On the one hand, Thunderbolts* looks set to be a pretty direct follow-up to Black Widow and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (those projects and this movie share many of the same characters).

While we expect it to have a lot in common with those, filmmaker Jake Schreier tells Empire Online that when he boarded Thunderbolts*, it came with a very clear directive from Marvel Studios brass: "'Make it something different.'"

So, rather than being a movie boasting the same tone as those grounded titles, it will be its own beast. As Yelena Belova actor Florence Pugh tells the site, "It ended up becoming this quite badass indie, A24-feeling assassin movie with Marvel superheroes."

Schreier acknowledges that, adding: "There’s a certain amount of that Beef tone in it, that does feel different. There’s an emotional darkness that we brought to this that is resonant, but...

Coming off the success of his first Cbm venture, Blade II, which marked a pivotal point in Guillermo del Toro’s Hollywood run, the revered filmmaker was then handed the keys to the adaptation for Dark Horse Comics’ Hellboy. Even when facing the worst dangers in the universe, the Avengers were always a hopeful force – do-gooders who could do this all day. But one thing’s for sure: the Thunderbolts aren’t the Avengers. Thunderbolts* arrives in theaters less than two months from now and Empire Magazine has shared two new covers assembling the members of Marvel Studios' newest superhero team.

The first is a pretty standard promotional shot of the Thunderbolts which, despite her absence from the trailers, puts Taskmaster front and centre. The Sentry is in "Bob" mode here, presumably meaning his superhero costume will remain under wraps despite that recent leak.

Empire's subscriber-only cover pays homage to comic book corner boxes and was illustrated by Marvel Comics artist Mark Brooks.

We'd imagine new stills and interviews are incoming, while a trailer is likely also on the way. Marvel Studios has pulled out all the stops to build awareness for Thunderbolts*, including a splashy Super Bowl TV spot. Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps will surely be next to get their own Empire covers.

Back to Thunderbolts* and early buzz for the movie is extremely positive.

The powers that be have assembled various teams across the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ve had the Avengers, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes; then intergalactic ‘a-holes’, the Guardians Of The Galaxy; see also, the god-like Eternals. But there’s never been a superhero team-up like the Thunderbolts. In part because they’re not exactly heroes, consisting of grey-area allies at best (Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes), and borderline-villains at worst. But also because they’re not exactly ‘super’ either, with barely a special power between them. So, what happens when a motley crew of not-super not-heroes is tasked with saving the world?

The new issue of Empire goes on set of Marvel’s Thunderbolts* in search of answers, speaking to the starry cast – including Pugh, Stan, John-Kamen and Russell, plus David Harbour and Lewis Pullman – and director Jake Schreier about creating the unlikeliest team-up this side of the multiverse.

The Thunderbolts* is assembling characters from franchises like Black Widow, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and Ant-Man and The Wasp for what promises to be one of the McU's wildest team-ups to date.

"I had Toy Story 3 in there," the director told Empire Online. "It wasn’t as focused on a genre as much as dynamics amongst characters. They all have that dynamic of a team that is thrown together."

"That [furnace] sequence works so well because you’ve come to care about these characters so much," Schreier added. "Can they get out of the trash can together?"

While we'd have never imagined a movie like Thunderbolts* being inspired by Pixar's animated classic, the members of the team also share something in common: they're damaged people.

Marvel had a rough year in 2023. Many of its properties underperformed, and they lost their big villain due to Jonathan Majors being fired. Looking forward to their upcoming slate, comic fans have been excited about some of the studio’s projects over the next few years. Will these films help Marvel regain control? The upcoming Thunderbolts film has been one that fanboys have been hoping to see since the MCU started. With some recent news about the property coming up, it seems like the right time to break down what we know about the production.

Who Are The Thunderbolts?

The team first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1997 in an issue of The Incredible Hulk. They seemed to be a new group of superheroes that had arrived on the scene and gained acclaim very quickly. The reader was informed that the group was actually a group of supervillains led by Baron Zemo.

Plot: When a meteor crashes into Colepepper Zoo, a virus that transforms the animals into slobbering zombie-like mutants is unleashed. Now, the unaffected animals must band together to stop it before it’s too late.

Review: It’s hard out there for animated films not being produced by either Disney or Dreamworks. It seems as though most are dismissed without having those two companies attached. Yet some of the best animation in recent years has come from smaller studios. So it’s exciting to see a new animated film releasing, with neither juggernaut attached, and featuring a name that is sure to raise some eyebrows: Clive Barker. That’s right, the Hellraiser creator has taken time away from the world of the macabre and is instead focusing on family animation with Night of the Zoopocalypse.

Based on Chuck Dixon’s 2014 novel ‘Levon’s Trade,’ the movie follows Levon Cade, left behind a decorated military career in the black ops to live a simple life working construction. But when his boss’s daughter, who is like family to him, is taken by human traffickers, his search to bring her home uncovers a world of corruption far greater than he ever could have imagined. Thunderbolts* is currently one of the most anticipated MCU movies, based on the Marvel Comics team of the same name. It is set to be the 36th movie in the MCU and will be released in theaters on May 2, 2025, as the final film of Phase Five.

The movie is directed by Jake Schreier, with a script written by Eric Pearson, Lee Sung Jin, and Joanna Calo.

The film follows a group of antiheroes who are caught in a deadly trap by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and must work together on a dangerous mission. The team’s journey will test their abilities and might even offer them a chance at redemption if they can unite and complete the task ahead.

The cast features an ensemble of talented actors, including Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer, Wendell Pierce, Hannah John-Kamen, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

The Super Bowl trailer for Thunderbolts* established The Void as the movie's big bad and offered only a glimpse at his "heroic" side, The Sentry. Their comic book history is complicated but all signs point to Bob embracing his darker impulses courtesy of a push from Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

The trailer for Jason Statham‘s new action thriller flick has been released!

The 57-year-old actor stars alongside David Harbour, Michael Peña, and Jason Flemyng in the new movie A Working Man directed by David Ayer, who co-wrote the screenplay with Sylvester Stallone.

Here’s the synopsis: “Levon Cade left behind a decorated military career in the black ops to live a simple life working construction. But when his boss’s daughter, who is like family to him, is taken by human traffickers, his search to bring her home uncovers a world of corruption far greater than he ever could have imagined.”

It would be easy to write off Night of the Zoopocalypse as one of those stupid animated films cheaply made to generate a quick buck. To do that would be a mistake, though, because this comedy/horror film is a hilarious time and a solid animated movie for the whole family. Based on a concept from Hellraiser director Clive Barker, this tells a relatively exciting story of zoo animals facing a zombie crisis. This is worth a watch with a fast pace, solid animation, and a funny story.

Amazon MGM Studios has dropped the first clip from A Working Man, the upcoming action thriller featuring Jason Statham doing what he does best: kicking ass and grunting monosyllabically.

The clip finds Levon Cade (Statham) brought before Dutch (Chidi Ajufo), who seems to be sitting upon some type of motorcycle club version of the Iron Throne. Dutch suspects that Cade might be a cop and orders his underlings to go through Cade’s pockets. Cue broken limbs, smashed faces, and all-around mayhem. Check out the clip for yourself above!

Thunderbolts*, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's answer to the Suicide Squad, comes out on May 2. Director Jake Schreier will surely want to distance himself from those kinds of comparisons, but it’s hard not to see the similarities between the two stories. Thunderbolts* stars a rag-tag team of misunderstood antiheroes working for a shadowy organization ruled over by a badass woman. If Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) getting an expendable group of souped-up villains to do her bidding sounds similar to Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) pulling the strings in 2016’s Suicide Squad and 2021’s The Suicide Squad, that’s because it is.

Still, Schreier’s take on Thunderbolts* revamps the typical Thunderbolts lineup from Marvel Comics and gives it an MCU twist.
