So, let’s check out the best new and returning sci-fi fantasy shows that came out last year.

The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy episode 6, "The High-Handed Enemy."Dune: Prophecy cast and showrunner discuss Desmond Hart's (Travis Fimmel) parentage reveal ahead of season 2. Led by Emily Watson and Olivia Williams, who portray Valya and Tula Harkonnen, respectively, the Dune prequel series explores the Bene Gesserit sisterhood in the early days and sees them facing a major threat in the wake of the reckoning. Hart, the antagonist in the series, turns out to be Tula's son. In episode 6, Tula tells Valya the truth in front of an injured Hart.
In an interview with Cinemablend, the series cast and showrunner addressed how the revelation would affect Valya and Tula's relationship. Watson explained that the truth has "blown everything up" for Valya, who is still holding onto the idea that she's "the chosen one" and it's her mission to face the enemies. The first season finale of Dune: Prophecy is in the can, and it was by far the most action-packed, eventful episode of the show so far. The twists came fast and furious. Desmond Hart arrested Tula Harkonnen, who it ends up is his mother! Valya Harkonnen travels to Arrakis with Princess Ynez and Kieran Atreides! And things at the Bene Gesserit school on Wallach IX have completely fallen apart.
It sets up a lot of exciting plotlines for season 2, which we now know is coming. In the meanwhile, we got to participate in a roundtable interview with lead actors Emily Watson (Valya) and Olivia Williams (Tula), as well as Dune: Prophecy showrunner Alison Schapker.
Between them, Valya and Tula have a very large body count. They've both done some unsavory things in the name of expanding the Sisterhood, and not just to their enemies. Early on in the show, Tula...

Dune: Prophecy season 1 uses the term "imprinting," which may raise some questions for TV viewers. The world created by Frank Hebert's Dune books is expansive on its own, but with the lore additions from Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's expanded novels, HBO's prequel series has plenty of material to go off of. Even still, the TV show has expanded on the Dune universe with new characters, powers, and mysteries to be unearthed by long-term book fans and first-timers alike. Dune: Prophecy's season 1 ending resolves some of these mysteries, but there are still stones left unturned.
Audiences have grown far more acquainted with the Sisterhood, an earlier form of the Bene Gesserit, throughout Dune: Prophecy season 1. Valya Harkonnen is the Mother Superior of the Sisterhood, and her main objective is to carry on the wishes of Mother Superior Raquella, creating a manufactured breeding plan that will produce the...

The first season of Dune: Prophecy wrapped up last night with "The High-Handed Enemy," an eventful episode that left many of our characters in new and unexpected places. On Wallach IX, Dorotea — a Bene Gesserit sister killed decades ago — took over the body of her granddaughter Lila (Chloe Lea) and is now trying to steer the Sisterhood in a whole new direction. Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams) is now a prisoner of her son Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel) on the planet Salusa Secundus, and Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) has traveled with Princess Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) and swordmaster Kieran Atredies (Chris Mason) to the desert world of Arrakis to find out who's been manipulating Desmond from behind the scenes, and why.
Those are a lot of threads to leave dangling ahead. Happily, we now know the show will continue with a second season. Unhappily, it probably won't happen for a couple of years.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Dune: Prophecy season 1, episode 6!Dune: Prophecy showrunner Alison Schapker has explained the season 1 finale's ending location and teases what the new setting means for season 2. The ending of Dune: Prophecy sees Valya (Emily Watson) rescue Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) and Keiran (Chris Mason) from imprisonment, managing to escape the planet despite pursuit from Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel). At the very end of the episode, the trio arrive on Arrakis, which has had a major impact on the story due to the dream of the sandworm the Sisterhood has been having throughout the show.
Speaking with TVLine, Schapker explained how the pull of Arrakis was important for Dune: Prophecy season 1, but that season 2 will further explore its importance to the overall narrative. “Dune: Prophecy” on HBO is preparing for its second season after an exciting finale revealing shocking family secrets. It set the stage for a trip to Arrakis, the famous desert planet. The sci-fi show, set 10,000 years before the story of Paul Atreides, has been officially renewed, which means that fans will learn more about this beloved world.
There were some big surprises in the Season 1 finale. The bad guy Desmond Hart, played by Travis Fimmel, is Tula Harkonnen’s secret son, played by Olivia Williams. She has kept this secret from her sister Valya, who Emily Watson plays for many years. This complicated family relationship worsens the conflict, especially since Desmond’s brief reconciliation with Tula led to her arrest.
Watson stated, “Everything has changed,” as he thought about Valya’s broken outlook. She clarified that Valya still follows her sense of destiny, even though her views have been turned upside down.

The season 1 finale of Dune: Prophecy brought us lots of twists and turns. Tula Harkonnen is Desmond Hart's mother! Valya Harkonnen is now on Arrakis! The Bene Gesserit school is in utter disarray!
Naturally, there were also character deaths. Valya assigned the Bene Gesserit sister Francesca to kill Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong), the father of her son, but she didn't seem like she was going to go through with it. But she didn't need to: despairing after learning that his life was the result of a series of manipulations by the Sisterhood, Javicco drove a blade into his own body. And then his wife Natalya (Jodhi May) came in and killed Francesca (Tabu) with the very poisoned needle that was intended to kill her husband.
So is Emperor Corrino really dead? We recently got to participate in a roundtable interview with Dune: Prophecy stars Emily Watson (Valya) and Olivia Williams...

“Dune: Prophecy” finally took some characters to the fabled planet Arrakis in the finale of Season 1, but much more of the locale is to come in the second season.

The hierarchy of the Dune universe just changed.
No, the Rock was nowhere to be found on the season finale of HBO’s Dune: Prophecy. Instead, it’s a different rock taking center stage: Arrakis, the desert planet at the heart of Frank Herbert’s novels on which the show is based.
While Arrakis is referenced throughout the first six-episode season, Dune: Prophecy avoided actually bringing the planet to life onscreen, save for some brief (but important) holographic flashes. Now, the thing is well and fully on display, thanks to the last scene of the finale. The spicy world of Arraks is officially on the map, and stands ready for exploration in the recently announced season two.

After Tula discovers Desmond Hart is her son, Dune: Prophecy delivers another mixed bag of an episode. Across its first five, the prequel has varied in quality. Billed as a Bene Gesserit origin story, the series has been light on the in-fighting within the Sisterhood, focusing instead on an anti-Imperium rebellion, authoritarianism under the reign of Emperor Javico Corrino, and a strange and troubling prophecy that has something to do with the Machine War that took place before the events of the series.
Set in the universe of Frank Herbert's Dune series, this sci-fi epic follows the political and spiritual struggles on the desert planet of Arrakis. As factions vie for control of the prized spice melange, a prophesied hero emerges, challenging the balance of power and the fate of the galaxy.

Indian cinema star Tabu plays a pivotal role in the “Dune” universe in Max’s prequel series “Dune: Prophecy,” appearing as Sister Francesca in the final two episodes.

Max's epic prequel series Dune: Prophecy explores the early period of the beloved sci-fi franchise, and the origins of the Bene Gesserits will continue in season 2. Developed for the screen by Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker, Prophecy loosely adapts the book series by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, which explores the early periods of each of the major houses in the Dune franchise. More specifically, Dune: Prophecy concerns the rise of the Bene Gesserit sect, and how they assumed control over the events of the universe more than 10,000 years before Paul Atreides' rise to power.
With the heady complex lore of the Dune franchise as its backdrop, Dune: Prophecy follows in the footsteps of other HBO hits like Game of Thrones. Considering the plethora of events that could be investigated by the series, there was no reason to think that Prophecy would be a one-and-done miniseries. Planting seeds (much...

Dune: Prophecy is a new sci-fi series on HBO that's so far aired five out of six episodes in its first season. The show has been solid — I've been watching and reviewing it here on WinterIsComing, and despite a few qualms I've overall enjoyed the slow creepy story about court politics, genetic memory, and family trauma. The sets are huge, the special effects terrific, and the performances excellent, especially from the two leads Emily Watson and Olivia Williams, playing sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen.
All the same, I've been worried the show feels too remote and knotty to attract a big enough audience to make it worth the large budget HBO has obviously expended. But I shouldn't have fretted. HBO announced today they they're renewing Dune: Prophecy for season 2!

Since their early 20s, Emily Watson and Olivia Williams’ careers have run on parallel tracks. Born one year apart, they first got to know each other by pondering their futures together on a patch of grass outside The Black Swan pub in Stratford-upon-Avon. “We met at the Royal Shakespeare Company, in the early ’90s, where we were in different plays in different seasons,” says Williams. The two never ended up on stage together. “Partly because there aren’t that many scripts around for two leading ladies of the same age,” adds Watson.
Their paths would soon cross again, as Williams made her foray into Hollywood, with Kevin Costner’s The Postman and Wes Anderson’s Rushmore, around the same time as Watson was leveraging her breakout success in Lars von Trier’s Breaking the Waves. “I was staying at the Four Seasons and we had a cosmopolitan, as was the fashion then,...

The latest episode of Dune: Prophecy, "Twice Born," got us even better acquainted with the Harkonnen family. We've already spent a lot of time with Valya (Emily Watson) and Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams), sisters who became part of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood. But lately we've been getting to know their great-uncle Evgeny Harkonnen, a surly old man played by Game of Thrones veteran Mark Addy; as well as their nephew Harrow (Edward Davis), the current steward of House Harkonnen who is aiming to raise its profile.
In "Twice Born," Harrow gets his chance when Aunt Valya offers to get him a seat at the Landsraad, the governing body of great houses. She has her own reasons, of course, but Harrow is willing to follow his ambition and go along with her, despite Evgeny's stringent objections; Evgeny never forgave Valya for the incident in her youth where her brother Griffin...

[This story contains major spoilers through Dune: Prophecy season one, episode four.]
For those whose Dune experience is limited to Denis Villeneuve’s two films, the latest episode of HBO’s prequel series Dune: Prophecy was likely a bit of a shock.
Not just because Travis Fimmel’s Desmond Hart incinerated several high-rankings members of imperial houses, and not just because Mother Superior Valya (Emily Watson) basically shouted her uncle to death. Instead, it’s because of two of the people who were opposite Hart and Valya in this episode: Harrow and Evgeny of House Harkonnen, the deadliest house in the known Dune universe.
Played by Edward Davis and Game of Thrones star Mark Addy, respectively, the two Harkonnens could not be more different from one another in appearance and personality. But the distinction is even greater when compared against Vladimir Harkonnen and his nephew Feyd-Rautha, played in Villeneuve’s movies by Stellan Skarsgard and Austin Butler.

Dune: Prophecy is a major hit on streaming, even though it holds an unfortunate Rotten Tomatoes record for the franchise. Created by Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker, the sci-fi TV show takes place 10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides, chronicling how Harrkonen sisters Valya (Emily Watson) and Tula (Olivia Williams) created the Bene Gesserit order. Dune: Prophecy reviews have been somewhat lukewarm from critics, and the show is currently the lowest-rated entry in the franchise on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite a bit of a muted response critically, new data from The Wrap reveals that Dune: Prophecy occupies the number one spot on Samba TV’s Weekly Wrap Report, which covers November 25 – December 1. The chart, which only includes U.S. data, ranks titles based on household reach. Prophecy's win cements Max as a major player in the streaming landscape, as it marks the 11th straight week a Max series occupied the top position.

In the series premiere of Dune: Prophecy, "The Hidden Hand," we meet a number of characters playing their part in the never-ending battle to control the Imperium. Reverance Mother Kasha (Jihae) is the personal truthsayer of the emperor himself (Mark Strong), and is working behind the scenes to get the emperor's daughter Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) into a position where she can one day become empress herself. Ynez is sympathetic towards the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, of which Kasha is a part. And the Bene Gesserit are nothing if not self-advancing.
To that end, Kasha has talked the emperor into letting Ynez marry a young boy named Pruwet Richese (Hodson Prior), the heir to a powerful house. By the end of the episode, both Kasha and Preset are dead, burned from the inside out by new arrival Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), who wants to lessen the influence of the Bene Gesserit throughout the known universe.

Dune: Prophecy is off to a strong start as the premiere episode tallied 1.2M cross-platform U.S. viewers on Sunday, according to Warner Bros. Discovery.
The episode grew another 75% in the day after it debuted, bringing the total audience thus far to 2.1M viewers, the company says.
That’s a pretty solid start for the prequel series, nearly in par with the premiere of The Penguin‘s audience of 1.4M. Dune: Prophecy took over the Sunday slot from the DC series, which continued to grow its same-day audience right up to the finale. HBO now says The Penguin premiere has tallied 18M U.S. viewers.
This bodes well for Dune: Prophecy, likely indicating that the audience for this series will grow too. In the streaming era, same-day viewership is becoming less indicative of the appetite for any titles, as audiences tend to watch on their own terms throughout the week.

Warning: The spoilers must flow. This article discusses major plot details from the latest episode of "Dune: Prophecy."
When it was first announced that the recent "Dune" adaptations would receive their very own spinoff series, it's fair to say that many fans had one main question: Why? Both blockbusters had managed to do the impossible and turn author Frank Herbert's nerdy sci-fi/fantasy story into a mainstream sensation, reinforcing the idea that only a filmmaker like Denis Villeneuve had cracked the code. What more could a streaming show, even one about the space-witch society known as the Bene Gesserit, possibly accomplish?
Well, it only took the opening scene for showrunner Alison Schapker, co-developer Diane Ademu-John, and their writing team to make a statement and add their own significant contribution to the franchise's sprawling lore -- something that even the movies never dared to depict.

The first episode of Dune: Prophecy has aired on HBO and Max, starting us off on a strange, compelling journey through the Imperium some 10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides. It's the Dune we know, it's Dune as we've never seen it, it's a good time in front of the TV.
We've been lucky enough to get to talk to some of the cast and crew members behind the show. That includes Jihae, who plays the Reverand Mother Kasha, a Bene Gesserit sister who is the personal Truthsayer of Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong) himself, as well as a maternal figure for the emperor's daughter and heir apparent, the Princess Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina). Kasha resides with the royal family on the imperial planet of Salusa Secundus, which sets her up as someone with a lot of power and influence. But if you watched the opening episode, "The Hidden Hand,...
