A new spinoff series for “The Rookie” is in the works at ABC, TheWrap has learned.
The show, which is currently in early development at Lionsgate Television and 20th Television, will stick to the cop world found in “The Rookie,” unlike its previous spinoff series “The Rookie: Feds,” which centered on oldest rookie (played by Niecy Nash-Betts) in the FBI Academy.
Set in Washington state, the series will follow “a male cop who is stepping into a new phase of life in his second act,” per the official logline.
“The Rookie” creator Alexi Hawley will write the new spinoff series, which will be co-produced by Lionsgate Television and 20th Television. Hawley will also executive produce alongside “The Rookie” star Nathan Fillion as well as “The Rookie” EPs Michelle Chapman and Bill Norcross.
“The Rookie” is currently headed into its seventh season at ABC, which will debut Jan. 7 at 10 p.m.

ABC is exploring a second spinoff from its popular series ‘The Rookie,’ according to Deadline. Unlike the previous offshoot that ventured into the FBI’s territory, this new project stays closer to the original’s roots in police drama.
‘The Rookie,’ starring Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, originally depicted a man starting over as the oldest rookie in the LAPD, a theme of midlife transformation that this new spinoff will also embrace.
Alexi Hawley, creator of ‘The Rookie,’ is behind the script for this potential series, which is set in Washington state.
It follows a male police officer who, like Nolan, is tackling a significant life change in what’s described as his second act.
Hawley is joining forces again with Fillion, who besides starring in the original, will serve as an executive producer on the new project alongside other ‘The Rookie’ executive producers Bill Norcross and Michelle Chapman. Norcross...

Exclusive: ABC’s hit procedural The Rookie may spawn a second spinoff series — and unlike the first one, it would stay in the cop show arena. The network, Lionsgate Television and 20th Television are in early development on the offshoot, written by The Rookie creator Alexi Hawley, sources tell Deadline.
Set in Washington state, the potential spinoff follows a male cop who is stepping into a new phase of life in his second act. It keeps the major midlife change concept of the Los Angeles-set original series, which started off with Nathan Fillion’s John Nolan switching careers to become the oldest rookie in the LAPD.
The Rookie executive producer/showrunner Hawley is executive producing the offshoot alongside The Rookie star/executive producer Fillion and fellow Rookie executive producers Bill Norcross, whose real-life story inspired the mothership series, and Michelle Chapman. Lionsgate Television will co-produce with 20th Television.

The Rookie: Feds, a spinoff of The Rookie, was canceled after one season due to poor ratings and industry changes. Co-creator Alexi Hawley attributed the cancelation to the consolidation of the industry and the economic impact of streaming wars. The 2023 Hollywood strikes also played a part in the cancelation, but not as the main reason.
ABC evidently wanted to build a franchise around The Rookie, starting with its first (and only) spinoff The Rookie: Feds, but the second show failed to meet expectations and was canceled shortly after its debut. The police procedural series, created by Alexi Hawley (the creator and showrunner of The Rookie) and Terence Paul Winter, took the original show's premise and applied it to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Instead of Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, a middle-aged rookie in the Los Angeles Police Department, The Rookie: Feds starred Niecy Nash-Betts as Simone Clark, a middle-aged rookie in the FBI.

Seven characters from The Rookie: Feds could join the cast of The Rookie season 7. Potential characters include Simone Clark, Laura Stensen, Matt Garza, and Elena Flores. Britt Robertson, Felix Solis, and Kevin Zegers appeared in the season 6 finale of The Rookie, increasing their chances of reprising their roles again.
ABC tried to build a franchise around The Rookie with The Rookie: Feds, and even though the network canceled the spinoff after only one season, that doesn't mean that its characters can't join the cast of the parent series. The police procedural series, created by Alexi Hawley, debuted in 2018 and revolves around Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, a middle-aged rookie in the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Hawley and Terence Paul Winter had the idea of taking the same concept but applying it to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and The Rookie: Feds was born.

Actor Nathan Fillion didn’t take long to find work in The Rookie after Castle‘s 2016 cancellation. Looking back on the way the series ended, Fillion might’ve been just as disappointed in it as some of the show’s fans.

Castle had an ending that wasn’t received well by some fans of the show. As viewers might remember, the very ending of the series showed Fillion’s Richard Castle and Stana Katic’s Kate Beckett as a happily married couple with three kids. This might’ve been the trajectory that some figured the show would be headed in. Even Castle itself teased this outcome throughout the series.

‘The Rookie: Feds’ Creator Alexi Hawley On Drama’s Demise: It Wasn’t Just Due To The Strike, He Says
Creator Alexi Hawley expressed regret on Saturday about the cancellation of The Rookie: Feds, an ABC procedural that he said was a victim of economics and “consolidation in the industry.”
While appearing on the dais for The Rookie at the Television Critics Tour, Hawley, who created Feds with Terence Paul Winter, said some people tried to blame the show’s demise on the strike but “it’s a bigger conversation than that.” The ratings for The Rookie: Feds were modest but were trending in a positive direction before the series starring Niecy Nash-Betts was canceled after one season in November.
“A lot had to do with the forces that led to strike … the consolidation of the industry, the economic impact of the streaming wars have had on different companies,” Hawley said. “I do feel it was not a creative decision. It was a business decision. I can’t argue with that.

The Rookie: Feds and The Good Doctor spinoff, The Good Lawyer, will not move forward at ABC as the network canceled both projects. Following its first season run The Rookie: Feds will not be back, and The Good Lawyer will not make it to air after initially being teased in a trailer earlier this year. As fans of The Rookie: Feds know, the series starring Niecy Nash-Betts is a spinoff of Alexi Hawley‘s The Rookie which is led by Nathan Fillion. Premiering in 2022, Feds was first teased on the flagship series when Nash-Betts’ Simone Clarke was introduced in a two-part event during the fourth season of The Rookie. (Credit: ABC/Raymond Liu) Similar to Fillion’s Officer John Nolan, Simone Clarke was the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy when she was introduced to audiences. ABC has officially cancelled The Rookie: Feds after season 1. The spinoff did not achieve the same level of success as its parent series, The Rookie, but still performed well and had a growing viewership with delayed viewing factored in. The prolonged work stoppage due to strikes may have been a contributing factor in the show's cancellation, as it became harder for networks to justify renewing a show that did not achieve runaway success.
The fate of The Rookie: Feds season 2 has now been revealed by ABC, following several months in which the Niecy Nash-Betts spinoff has hung in limbo. A police procedural spinoff of The Rookie, created by Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter, the story followed Simone Clark (Nash-Betts), the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy. The show also starred Felix Solis, Frankie Faison, Britt Robertson, Kevin Zegers, and James Lesure.

ABC’s The Rookie: Feds has been canceled after one season.
A decision on whether the network would renew the freshman drama led by Niecy Nash-Betts was delayed for months amid the ongoing dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, both of which have recently concluded. The ratings for The Rookie: Feds were modest and were trending in a positive direction, as Deadline reported in May.
The Rookie: Feds, the only ABC singular-lead hourlong broadcast series headlined by a Black actor, was not the breakout hit the original Rookie was but delivered respectable ratings that could’ve been enough to secure a second season had it not been for the dual strikes.
Nash-Betts starred as Simone, a former guidance counselor living her dream of becoming an FBI agent, making her the oldest rookie in the agency. Taking on the role came with challenges as many doubted her capabilities, mainly her boss,...

It’s not a great day for spinoffs at ABC. The network has axed “The Rookie: Feds” after one season and will not move forward with “The Good Doctor” spinoff, “The Good Lawyer.”
The spinoff of ABC’s “The Rookie,” which was renewed for a sixth season, stars Niecy Nash-Betts as Simone Clark, the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy. The procedural was introduced as a two-part event during the current fourth season of “The Rookie,” where Officer John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and the LA division of the FBI enlist the help of Simone when one of her former students is a suspect in a terror attack.

ABC still has some decisions to make on its scripted slate.
The network has yet to make final calls on renewals for comedy Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds as well as The Good Lawyer, a backdoor pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor.
It comes after ABC passed on four of its pilots: Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.
Deadline understands that ABC is unlikely to make all of these decisions until the writers strike is over and the future of the fall season is clearer. A decision on Home Economics may come first out of the three.

“They want to be seen and they both want to be heard. For our recent webchat she says, “Simone waited later in life to live her dream of becoming an FBI agent, but she still feels like she has value,” she says, adding about the woman she portrays in “Dahmer” that “in trying to call the police and trying to share what she was experiencing through living next door to Jeffrey Dahmer wanted to be heard, wanted her voice to have value in the world, and neither of them ever stopped trying.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

ABC has lengthened its sentence for “The Rookie: Feds,” adding nine episodes to the spinoff series to bring its total Season 1 episode count to 22.
The Niecy Nash-starring procedural, which is based on the flagship “The Rookie,” debuted Sept. 27 and quintupled its ratings (from 0.31 to 1.53) in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic after delayed multiplatform viewing. Following a week of linear and digital viewing, its series debut picked up an additional 4 million viewers on top of Nielsen’s live plus same-day average of 2.2 million.

The Rookie: Feds, the spinoff of the long-running police drama series, has scored a full season order at ABC.
The Disney-owned network has handed the series a back order of nine additional episodes, taking it to a total of 22 episodes for the season.
It comes three weeks after its launch on Tuesday, September 27 and solid numbers, particularly with delayed multiplatform viewing. The show increased five times in adults 18-49 with a delayed-viewing lift of +394 taking it to a 1.53 versus 0.31. After seven days of viewing across linear and digital platforms, it picked up more than 4M viewers over its live+same day average from 2.2M to 6.4M viewers.
It marks the first back order of the season for ABC. No word on extra episodes of its other fall series Alaska Daily yet, which launched on October 6 and had a similar multiplatform increase.

The FBI’s oldest rookie will stay on the case for a while longer.
ABC has picked up a full season of its first-year show The Rookie: Feds, starring Niecy Nash-Betts as Simone Clark, the aforementioned new FBI agent. The network has given an old-school, back nine order to the drama, bringing its total for the season to 22 episodes.
A spinoff of The Rookie, now in its fifth season, Feds was introduced in an episode of the former show last season before earning a spot on ABC’s fall slate. The show has performed modestly on air so far, averaging a little under 2 million viewers the night it airs. It draws considerably more viewers, however, after it airs — doubling to 3.96 million viewers after a week of delayed viewing.
The Sept. 27 premiere also added about 2 million viewers via streaming, giving it a seven-day, multi-platform audience of about 6.4 million viewers.

By focusing on Niecy Nash’s Simone — a Black, queer woman and rookie agent — in “The Rookie: Feds,” co-creator, co-showrunner and executive producer Alexi Hawley knows that the spinoff series cannot shy away from discourse about systemic change and structural racism. In real life, less than 1 of feds are Black women, and in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder and the 2020 protests against police, calls for the termination of law enforcement procedurals have swelled in tandem with discourse about defunding.
The uprisings against racial injustice broke as Hawley and his writers room opened for “The Rookie” Season 3, and the sensitivities of more nuanced depictions of cops has colored his and Terence Paul Winter’s approach to “Feds.”
Hawley told TheWrap in an interview, “[‘The Rookie’] had always been aspirational about policing, but it became very clear that ‘aspirational’ wasn’t enough, that we were portraying a version of policing...

To be a network police or medical procedural in the past decade is to want for a companion series. From there, the goal is to crawl kudzu-like across the schedule until the primetime grid is bespeckled with colons and occasionally clogged with three-hour crossover events. Still, ABC’s “The Rookie,” now in its fifth season, has never seemed an obvious choice for the Dick Wolf treatment.
Not because the show lacks ambition, though it does possess the happy-go-lucky quirk of a “Characters Welcome”-era USA drama. But “The Rookie” puts all its weight on the title character and stars the supernaturally charming Nathan Fillion, the kind of performer whose charisma can cut through even the schlockiest material. Creating a spinoff would require an equally charismatic performer who, like Fillion, can go from gravitas to goofiness at a moment’s notice. Enter Niecy Nash-Betts, just such a performer, to topline “The Rookie: Feds,...

Simone Clark, the oldest rookie in the FBI, will be part of an “upgrade” to the Bureau — whether they like it or not! — as revealed in a full-length trailer for The Rookie: Feds, ABC’s upcoming offshoot of (you guessed it) The Rookie.

The Niecy Nash Betts-starring “The Rookie: Feds” hit the ground running earlier this year when it was introduced as a double-episode backdoor pilot in ABC’s “The Rookie.” And when the spinoff drama premieres Sept. 27 on ABC, in an episode titled “Day One” and set after Simone (Nash Betts) celebrates her graduation from Quantico, it gets right into the action.
“The first thing she wants to do is after graduating from Quantico, she goes up to her old high school where she was a guidance counselor.… Simone wants to say goodbye to her students and kind of give them encouragement about how it’s never too late – again, speaking about what ‘The Rookie’ [franchise] is all about, reinvention, and about following your dreams no matter where you are in your life,’” showrunner and executive producer Terence Paul Winter told TheWrap when we spoke to him as part of our Fall TV Preview.

After two years without an in-person Comic-Con, fans are definitely holding out for the appearance of a few heroes. Fortunately, the ongoing pandemic — and skepticism over whether the Con will truly enforce those mask protocols — won’t keep the newest caped crusaders from braving the annual nerdfest that kicks off Thursday in San Diego.
Marvel shouldn’t disappoint with sneak peeks of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and the upcoming She-Hulk: Attorney at Law for Disney+. Updated with Saturday schedule: After a two-year in-person hiatus due to Covid, San Diego Comic-Con is raging back with a big footprint by streaming, TV and, well, as far as big screen feature films, let’s just say they’re creeping back.
Marvel will make some big waves with its upcoming new movies (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) and Disney+ series (She-Hulk), but it will keep some powder dry for D23 in early September. Dwayne Johnson will be booming with New Line/DC’s Black Adam, along with Shazam: Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi. However, while Sony will be skipping as the Spider-Verse animated sequel is set for next year. Paramount will be giving fans an early look at Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. And there’s Kevin Smith with Clerks III.
