Warning: Major spoilers for Carry-On below!Taron Egerton fronts Netflix's tense new thriller Carry-On - a title that may cause many UK viewers to do a double take. Carry-On cast Egerton as Ethan, an underachieving Tsa agent who Jason Bateman's mysterious Traveler blackmails into letting him smuggle a dangerous weapon past security. Carry-On has been compared to Die Hard more than once, though it's more of a slow-burn thriller than an action movie. For UK viewers of a certain age, the title might create some confusion with the Carry On film franchise.
This comedy saga comprises over 30 movies, with titles such as Carry On Screaming! or Carry On Don't Lose Your Head. The series had its own stable of recurring actors too, including Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Barbara Windsor (Eastenders), and many more. The franchise is still the most prolific British film series, with only James Bond coming close at 25 installments.

The ‘Carry On’ film franchise is getting a “non-woke” reboot. It is making a comeback thanks to director Nigel Gordon-Stewart, who said the renewal will stick to its cheeky roots. He told the Daily Star Sunday: “Ask yourself the question: what makes you laugh?“Chances are it’s lots of different things – a bit of slapstick, a bit of innuendo, a farcical situation, a misunderstanding, some physical comedy, a naughty, witty or cheeky line or a full-on, well told joke. “We have no intention of making jokes, plots or scripts deliberately in bad taste or with intent to offend anyone, but we can’t guarantee that we won’t, because you just can’t do that anymore.“People can take offence, even if it’s not intentionally given. We want ‘Carry On’ to be a family entertainment brand with the only intention of making people laugh and enjoy themselves.”A...

Sarah Philip digs into the story of the British film television channel that’s becoming a quiet sensation.
This article was originally published on 2nd April 2020.
When was the last time you saw a British black and white film on any of the five main UK terrestrial channels? A few weeks ago? A few months? Even if you do, it’s probably a film that’s been repeated a thousand times before. We’re at a point where even specialist movie channels like Film4 only show one or two classic films a day, and they’re not always British. As for subscription TV, TCM tends to screen American classics.
But one channel’s bucking the trend. Talking Pictures TV showcases black and white British films. Over eight years since its launch in 2015, it’s become one of the biggest film channels in the UK. In 2018, it attracted a weekly audience of up to 2 million viewers,...

The service featured a series of personal tributes, including a bronze statue of his beloved late dog Buster that had been placed on a leopard-print throw.
A photograph of a smiling O’Grady was placed at the front of the Grade I listed parish church surrounded by arrangements of lilies.

The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history.Women in Love.“British erotica” has long been considered an oxymoron, and this distinction is not entirely unfounded. While European auteurs like Jean-Luc Godard, Tinto Brass, Walerian Borowczyk, and Luis Buñuel were treating copulation as a springboard to philosophical ruminations, the British were paying to see Barbara Windsor’s bra popping off during an outdoor aerobics session in Carry On Camping (1969). Is this assessment fair? Well…yes and no. While many films point to a nation of buttoned-up prudes and furtive voyeurs, a deeper inspection reveals a colorful mosaic of sexual mores and shifting social values as film became an established part of life.Part of the challenge of defining British erotica lies with the difficulty of defining erotica itself. There’s enormous variability in the human response, and where some prefer explicit material,...

As the credits rolled on another episode of Crossroads on 4 November 1981, the switchboards at ITV started to jam. After watching the show’s beloved Midlands motel go up in flames, hundreds of viewers picked up the phone in tears to ask one question: would Meg Mortimer, the onscreen alter ego of actress Noele “Nolly” Gordon, make it out of the blaze alive? The odds for Meg, last seen clutching some sleeping pills, didn’t look good. The Sun claimed in a front-page splash the next day that some fans had even phoned up hospitals to ask about the injuries she might have sustained in the fire.
It was the culmination of nearly five months of outrage and hysteria that had begun in June, when news first broke that Gordon’s much-loved character would be written out of the soap. This was not a mutually agreed parting of ways – it was against Gordon’s own wishes.

With The Great Hack nominated for best documentary, the Observer journalist was invited to walk the red carpet. How was her night with the stars?
There are those who have dreamed their whole life of walking the red carpet. And then there are those whose first instinct is to be on an entirely different continent. On 7 January, The Great Hack – a Netflix film that shines a light on the murky world of Cambridge Analytica and its role in Trump and Brexit (and in which I play a small part) – is nominated for a Bafta for best documentary, and via a series of increasingly complicated emails cc-ed to a dozen or more people detailing car logistics and dietary requirements, it’s revealed that I’ve been invited to the ceremony. This is unfortunate as I have zero intention of going.
“I’m afraid I’m out of the country,” I email back.

The Queen, in an eye-catching sparkling green dress and a layered string of pearls, joined daughter Princess Anne and cousin Princess Alexandra for a rare private night out Monday at Bellamy's restaurant, a French brasserie and oyster bar in central London that won the coveted title of "Most Civilized Restaurant" by Tatler Magazine in 2014. The palace won't elaborate on the evening, saying it was a "private" dinner. And the restaurant, which offers popular dishes such as grilled swordfish, beurre maître d’hôtel at $23.55, a casserole of red mullet at $29 and steak tartare,...

It’s time to talk remakes and we’re delving into Disney again with their two versions of one of the most famous children’s stories ever. With a sequel coming out this May, it’s a good time to dissect the previous cinematic adaptation of Alice in Wonderland (2010).
When Lewis Carroll wrote Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865, he created the best-ever example of the ‘Literary Nonsense’ genre. It’s become an enduring classic for 150 years. It’s been adapted many times. The most famous version is the 1951 animated classic Alice in Wonderland by Disney Studios. It’s one of Disney’s most visually interesting films, because the storyline is so artfully illogical and filled with characters who were meant to be animated. It utilizes some great voice actors, perfectly suited for their roles.
It’s not necessary to explain such a familiar story. We all know the Mad Hatter,...

Happy New Year! Some Brits usher in the new year celebrating their newly bestowed knighthoods. This year Queen Elizabeth II honors, among others, Idris Elba and David Oyelowo. There are different designations to the honor. For example Imelda Staunton became a Cbe i.e. not yet a Dame but well on her way. It’s obvious The Queen hasn’t ventured out to the theater in 2015 or Staunton would be Dame Squared for her triumphant Mama Rose alone.
