There's one critique that's continuously followed The Stormlight Archive, but it's actually the book series' greatest virtue. Commonly considered the best of Brandon Sanderson's books, The Stormlight Archive series is a gigantic venture of epic fantasy, passing even the likes of A Song of Ice & Fire or The Wheel of Time in average novel length. It's an immense series to commit to, but the ultimate reward crucially overshadows the intimidation of those page counts.
Likely due to the density of each volume, The Stormlight Archive isn't Sanderson's most widely read work. That title goes to Mistborn, his other long-running series, which has appealed to a broader pool of audiences with its shorter and easier-to-follow story. But for fans of Sanderson's Cosmere fantasy universe, the novels set on Roshar are must-read material, and there are reasons to look past the drastic length. For instance, book 2, Words of Radiance, is...

The Stormlight Archive's magic system is broken down into ten orders of the Knights Radiant, each with their own abilities and ideals. As part of Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere book universe, magic in The Stormlight Archive works with a similar foundational idea to that in Mistborn or Elantris. Investiture is a source of energy in the Cosmere that takes different forms in different systems. In the Mistborn series, characters have access to the Metallic Arts, while on Roshar, magic takes the form of Surgebinding.
On Roshar, there are ten forces known as Surges, which grant different powers. Every Surgebinder has access to two Surges, coming in set combinations that can overlap. These combinations make up the Radiant orders. For example, the Surge ability Transformation is possessed by Lightweavers and Elsecallers, meaning Shallan Davar and Jasnah Kholin are both capable of Soulcasting without a fabrial device. Their orders have an overlapping Surge,...

There's nothing like a fantasy ending that lingers in my mind longer after I've finished it. As a young adult who loves storytelling more than anything, I'll commonly cite fantasy tales like The Lord of the Rings movie series and the Harry Potter books as the foundation for what's become my life and career. These stories provide needed escapism while also allowing me introspection and perspective on various aspects of real life, and it's the narratives that come to an emotional close that have the longest-lasting impact.
Between original novels, television adaptations, and original fantasy films, there are so many stories in the genre that have stuck with me. To me, the most powerful endings are those that are bittersweet, like Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy or the aforementioned Lord of the Rings. I enjoy sad art. But I'll also add fantasy books that gave me inspiration with their endings,...

Fantasy novels often require heavy exposition in the beginning to introduce new universes and complex systems. Well-written fantasy series provide an enormous payoff and engaging experience for readers in rich, expansive worlds. From unique perspectives to intricate worldbuilding, fantasy series like The Broken Earth and The Poppy War push boundaries.
While most book genres include worldbuilding and complex storytelling, fantasy particularly lends itself to writing that pushes the boundaries of what's possible in the literary world. When it comes to fantasy and sci-fi, to a certain extent, often an entirely new universe must be created from scratch by the author. This style means that the early parts of a fantasy series will be heavy with exposition. In addition, there will be dialogue explaining how the culture, magic systems, and political machine work. If the author is skilled, there will also be character-building and compelling incidents to keep the reader engaged.

Michael Whelan shares his 1979 interpretation of Gollum from The Lord of the Rings, which depicts his lamp-like eyes that are omitted in Andy Serkis' version. Andy Serkis is considered the definitive version of Gollum due to his exceptional performance and pioneering work in motion capture technology. Whelan's interpretation and others may be more visually accurate to J.R.R. Tolkien's description, but Serkis' popularity and portrayal make him the definitive Gollum.
Stephen King cover artist Michael Whelan shares his own 44-year-old interpretation of Gollum from The Lord of the Rings. First introduced in The Hobbit, Gollum was a Stoor hobbit formerly known as Sméagol who was corrupted and twisted by the power of One Ring and transformed into a wretched creature. In Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, Gollum was portrayed through motion capture and voiced by Andy Serkis.

Darren Lynn Bousman, who has directed several films in the “Saw” franchise, will direct the first film as part of a new horror franchise about the Lalaurie Mansion, a haunted house that still stands in the French Quarter of New Orleans.
“The Conjuring” writers Chad and Carey Hayes first announced back in 2019 that they were writing and developing a series of films all inspired by the house and the history of its crazed owner, Madame Delphine Lalaurie. Bousman will direct the first film in the planned franchise. No other casting or planned start dates were made clear.
The Lalaurie Mansion is considered one of the most haunted houses in the world and has been closed to the public since 1932, but it remains a popular tourist attraction. Exclusive: The Conjuring creators Chad and Carey Hayes and producers Faster Horse Pictures (The Tax Collector) have set Saw franchise director Darren Lynn Bousman to helm their new horror franchise The Lalaurie Mansion.
Bousman, who has directed four of the Saw movies including this year’s Spiral with Chris Rock and Samuel L Jackson, will direct the leadoff film in the proposed series of movies about the infamous New Orleans property.
The Hayes Brothers have written the film’s screenplay in the house, and the production will shoot portions of the film on-site as well, despite public access not being possible since 1932.
The first movie will be set in the present day and is being lined up for Q4 2021. Casting will begin now. We hear that studio and streamer interest is already high in the project.

If you’ve ever taken a ghost tour in New Orleans, chances are you’ve made a stop at the Lalaurie Mansion, which is the site of the atrocious behaviors of socialite Delphine Lalaurie, who tortured and murdered slaves on the now-infamous property. As it turns out, the Lalaurie Mansion is set to be the centerpiece for an upcoming horror project which will be written by veteran scribes Carey and Chad Hayes, and while in Park City for the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, this writer had the opportunity to speak with one of the producers for the project, Doug McKay, who gave us some insights into what we can expect from the upcoming film.
Great to speak with you, Doug. I’m familiar with the Lalaurie Mansion, as I toured it years ago on a ghost tour, and it was extremely creepy. What can you tell us about what’s already...

The creators of The Conjuring franchise, Chad and Carey Hayes, have launched a new production company called Faster Horse Pictures. The plan is to develop a series of haunted mansion horror films through this production company.
The new franchise will be built around the real-life Lalaurie Mansion, which is located in New Orleans. This is said to be one of the most notorious haunted houses in the world. Thousands of tourists flock to the mansion every year even though there hasn’t been any public access to it since 1932.
The house was made infamous by its resident Madame Lalaurie, “a New Orleans socialite and serial killer who tortured and murdered numerous slaves there in the early 1800s. After her crimes were exposed following a house fire in 1834, she fled the city and was never arrested.”
Nicolas Cage actually owned this mansion at one point. It’s now owned by Michael Whalen,...

After stepping into the haunted homes of the Perron and Hodgson families, respectively, in the first two Conjuring movies, screenwriters Chad and Carey Hayes are now opening the door to another real-life location with a haunted past in a new horror franchise based on the Lalaurie Mansion in New Orleans:
Press Release: From the creators of The Conjuring franchise, Chad and Carey Hayes, and Faster Horse Pictures’ Cindy Bond and Doug McKay in tandem with Michael Whalen, a team with experience working on The Zodiak, Shutter Island and The Black Swan, comes a new horror film franchise based on the infamous house and property known as The Lalaurie Mansion – one of the most haunted houses in the world. Despite there being no public access inside the property since 1932 (for a reason!), thousands of people travel to New Orleans each year just to get a roadside glimpse of the notorious home.

Ricardo Cortez in 'Ten Cents a Dance,' with Barbara Stanwyck. No matter how unthankful the role, whether hero or heel – or, not infrequently, a combination of both – Cortez left his bedroom-eyed, mellifluous-voiced imprint in his pre-Production Code talkies. Besides Barbara Stanwyck, during the 1920s and 1930s Cortez made love to and/or life difficult for, a whole array of leading ladies of that era, including Bebe Daniels, Gloria Swanson, Betty Compson, Betty Bronson, Greta Garbo, Florence Vidor, Claudette Colbert, Mary Astor, Kay Francis, Joan Crawford, Irene Dunne, Joan Blondell, and Loretta Young*. (See previous post: “Ricardo Cortez Q&A: From Latin Lover to Multiethnic Heel.”) Not long after the coming of sound, Ricardo Cortez was mostly relegated to playing subordinate roles to his leading ladies – e.g., Kay Francis, Irene Dunne, Claudette Colbert – or leads in “bottom half of the double bill” programmers at Warner Bros. or on loan to other studios. Would...

Hopefully, one day, Ron Howard's feature film adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower epic will happen. The project isn't completely dead yet, but it seems like it's just kind of sitting around not going anywhere at the moment. While we wait for some good news though, concept artist Gregory Hill released some great illustrations that he did for the movie. The designs are for various locations in the story such as Devar Toi, Tull, The Dogan, The Manni Village, A Harrier Near The Speaking Ring, The Thinny, Tull, and The Speaking Ring. There are also two videos that give us a fly through look at the town of Tull.

Shirley Jones Movies: Innocent virgins and sex workers galore (photo: Shirley Jones and Burt Lancaster in ‘Elmer Gantry’) (See previous post: “Shirley Jones: From Book to Movies.”) I haven’t watched The Cheyenne Social Club (1970), a comedy Western directed by Gene Kelly, and starring 62-year-old James Stewart as a cowpoke who inherits an establishment that turns out to be a popular house of prostitution. Henry Fonda plays Stewart’s partner. And I’m sure Shirley Jones, as one of the sex workers, looks lovely in the film. Hopefully, director Kelly gave this likable, talented actress the chance to do more than just stand around looking pretty. But then again … For all purposes, The Cheyenne Social Club ended Shirley Jones’ film stardom; that same year she turned to TV and The Partridge Family. Jones would return to films only nine years later, as one of several stars (among them Michael Caine,...
