On January 15, 1981, NBC premiered the police drama Hill Street Blues, which went on to air for seven seasons and collect 26 Emmy Awards wins during its run. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review of the show’s early episodes is below:
Wouldn’t it be ironic if Hill Street Blues lost the cutting edge that prompted the critics to rave and the Emmys to flow — and the ratings picked up? Now ensconced in a Thursday night position opposite 20/20 on ABC and movies on CBS, the second season debut of Hill Street, directed by supervising producer Greg Hoblit, still has the qualities and quality that made critics wax effusive, and which apparently turned a lot of viewers off.
For first-time viewers, the carnival of characters which gives the series its richness for addicts such as this viewer, may seem initially confusing. The structure is still the bits-and-pieces-flow-of-events unfolding over the course...

When Nate Bargatze returned to host Saturday Night Live earlier this month, it had been less than one calendar year since his previous headlining gig in October 2023. That’s a pretty speedy reappearance! But it doesn’t even crack the top 20 in terms of quickest returns to 30 Rock between hosting gigs.
Who got back even quicker? Here are the five SNL hosts who returned the fastest…
5 Tie: Buck Henry and Steve Martin: 126 Days
Maybe the hosting talent pool wasn’t as deep in the early days of Saturday Night Live, or maybe Lorne Michaels knew to ride a funny horse once he found one. Take Buck Henry, for instance. He hosted SNL’s 10th episode ever in January 1976, then returned in May of the same year to host the 21st as well. “Buck Henry so totally got it,” Michaels has explained. “When he got there, he said, ‘Do...

Brittany Snow and Penn Badgley, who co-starred in the 2006 high school comedy John Tucker Must Die, said in this week’s episode of Badgley’s podcast Podcrushed that while they’ve heard there is a sequel in development, they have not been contacted about it.
News of a sequel script first surfaced in March during a John Tucker cast reunion panel at Epic Cons Chicago, where star Jesse Metcalfe and co-star Arielle Kebbel both confirmed one had been written and “we are very proud of it,” Kebbel said, confirming she was a producer on it.
At the time, all the assembled cast members — Metcalfe, Kebbel and Sophia Bush — confirmed they were game, but little has been said since on the project. So little in fact that Snow brought it up to Badgley on the most recently episode of his podcast.

In a very unsettled drama Emmy field, one of the few ostensible locks this year is Elizabeth Debicki. With 4/1 odds, she is the runaway favorite to take home the Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy for her turn as Princess Diana on “The Crown,” which would make the Netflix series the sixth show to deliver two different winners in the category.
Twelve shows have won drama supporting actress more than once. Of those, seven shows have had one person triumph repeatedly, including “Lou Grant” for Nancy Marchand, who won a record four times, and most recently “Ozark” for three-time champ Julia Garner. The five shows that saw the wealth spread among its cast members are “St. Elsewhere”, “The West Wing”, “Hill Street Blues”, “The Practice” and “thirtysomething”. No show has had more than two cast members win the award.
Interestingly, Marchand (1980-82; her first win was in ’78), Roberts (1983), Woodard (1984), Thomas (1985), Bartlett...

John Tucker Must Die 2 is happening, teasing that John Tucker may not have changed after all, undoing the first movie's ending. The Og cast is returning for the sequel. The plot of John Tucker Must Die 2 hints at a potential repetition of the first movie's story. John Tucker's possible return to womanizing ways in the sequel may render the original plan and messy outcome of the first movie useless.

“John Tucker Must Die” is being resurrected.
The beloved high school rom-com that had a Shakespearean revenge premise is getting the delayed-sequel treatment, according to one the original film’s stars Arielle Kebbel. She’ll not just reprise her role of Carrie in this one, but also produce.
“John Tucker Must Die” centered around a philandering popular jock (Jesse Metcalfe) whose series of girlfriends devise a plan to turn the heartbreak tables around on him. Enter: Brittany Snow. The 2006 film also starred Sophia Bush, Penn Badgley, and the singer Ashanti. It was directed by Betty Thomas.
John Tucker, who definitely ain’t dead yet, may even get a redemption arc in this one.
“I’ve heard rumors of this script — there’s a script,” Metcalfe said earlier this week during a panel at Epic Cons Chicago (via E! Online). “Apparently, it’s amazing.”

Howard Stern has been one of the most controversial – and revered – figures in the history of modern media. With a passion for the field as a child, Stern’s climb to the top of the radio world truly began in the ‘80s. And he did it off of his unique, button-pressing, FCC-clashing brand and humor: the boobs, the prank calls, the Wack Pack, all of it all made Howard Stern one of the most recognizable figures in all of media. And so as his markets grew and his written word topped the charts – but long before his first $500 million contract with Sirius – it was time for Stern to enter the movie business…with something a little more commercially viable than Butt Bongo Fiesta.

NBC network dominated the 35th annual Primetime Emmys, with a groundbreaking drama continuing a winning streak, a little-watched sitcom making its name known and another sitcom proving the network might have cancelled it too soon. Eddie Murphy and Joan Rivers hosted the event on September 25, 1983. Rivers claimed she had waited nine years for an invitation to the Emmys, and would be wearing every dress she owed (which ended up being nine), and Murphy was excited about his first nomination. Read on for our Emmys flashback 40 years ago to 1983.
Two years prior, a little police drama had debuted, changing television with its realism and continuing storylines involving the personal lives of the characters. “Hill Street Blues” not only dominated the Nielsen ratings, but it won numerous Emmys throughout its run. This year would mark its third of four consecutive Best Drama Series victories, winning over “Cagney & Lacey,” “Fame,” “Magnum, P.I.” and “St. Elsewhere.

Charter Communications must pay 1.15 billion to the family of a woman who was murdered in her home by a cable technician, a Texas judge has ruled.
Dallas County Judge Juan Renteria on Monday slashed an earlier 7.38 billion verdict that was awarded in July to the family of Betty Thomas. The reduction may be a win for Charter, but the verdict has proved a significant thorn in the company’s side. Shares in Charter dropped 2.5 percent Tuesday to lows not seen since 2019.
Charter said in a statement that it disagrees with the verdict and will appeal.
“The responsibility for this horrible act rests solely with Mr. Holden, who was not on duty, and we are grateful he is in prison for life,” it said.

Read on for our Emmys flashback 40 years ago to 1982.

At the 1995 Emmy Awards, Christine Baranski and Julianna Margulies both won prizes in supporting categories, Baranski for comedy “Cybill” and Margulies for drama “ER.” Almost 15 years later, the two actresses would partner on the CBS legal series “The Good Wife,” which ran seven seasons and netted both performers an impressive number of nominations by the time the show wrapped in 2016. This year, they might both receive recognition for new roles — Baranski for HBO’s “The Gilded Age” and Margulies for Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” — and compete in the same category. Their characters didn’t end up in a good place in the series finale after all, remember?

When the Directors Guild of America’s annual awards gets underway March 12, there will be a number of changes from years previous. Most obviously, the ceremony will finally be held in person at the Beverly Hilton, after two straight years of virtual celebrations. But just as importantly, it will also be the DGA’s first awards gala under new president Lesli Linka Glatter, who succeeded two-term president Thomas Schlamme last September.
A multiple Emmy- and DGA Award-nominated television veteran, Glatter is best known for her work as a director of “Homeland,” “Twin Peaks,” “Mad Men” and “The West Wing,” as well as the cult coming-of-age feature “Now and Then.” She’s also a veteran of the DGA itself, having served as the guild’s vice president and been a three-time member of its negotiating team, as well as heading up a number of its diversity and inclusion initiatives.

IATSE and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have agreed to return to the bargaining table on Tuesday following the union’s historic strike-authorization vote. It will be the first time in more than two months that the two sides have engaged in collective bargaining.

A year after “Schitt’s Creek” made history by sweeping all the comedy prizes at the Emmy Awards, “The Crown” just accomplished the same feat, this time in drama.
After four years, the Netflix drama finally clinched the trophy for Outstanding Drama Series at the 2021 Emmys, giving the show the clean sweep of all seven drama categories — a first in the history of the Emmys.
Early victories came in the writing and directing fields, with series creator Peter Morgan and director Jessica Hobbs taking home wins for the fourth season episode, “War.” They were followed later in the night by Gillian Anderson and Tobias Menzies, in the supporting actor categories and stars Josh O’Connor and Olivia Colman for lead actor and actress.

Female directors hit another milestone tonight when The Crown‘s Jessica Hobbs won Outstanding Directing For a Drama Series and Hacks‘ Lucia Aniello Won Outstanding Directing For a Comedy Series, respectively. This marks the first time women have swept both directing categories in the same year.
Hobbs being recognized for directing the Season 4 finale of Netflix’s The Crown, marks only the fourth time in 67 years that the Emmy Award in the Outstanding Directing For a Drama Series category has been won by a woman.

Thomas Schlamme will be stepping down as president of the DGA when the guild convenes its biennial convention on September 18. “I will be stepping down at our upcoming Biennial Convention – and look forward to a new voice leading us,” he said in his farewell address, which was sent out to members and is on the DGA website. “And though this letter is a goodbye of sorts, more than anything it is filled with gratitude to this sacred institution of folks standing up for one another.”

History has been made at the 73rd annual DGA Awards. Nomadland director Chloé Zhao has won the marquee prize for Nomadland, marking the second time the DGA has given the guild’s top prize to a female director after Kathryn Bigelow for 2008’s The Hurt Locker.
Zhao, along with fellow DGA nominees David Fincher for Mank, Lee Isaac Chung for Minari and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman, also is nominated in the Best Directing Oscar category.
Zhao used her acceptance speech to thank and honor the work of each of her fellow nominees, beginning with Fennell. “Emerald, you are so brilliant, so daring, and in such control of your craft with a unique voice, I can’t wait to see what thought-provoking journey you’re going to take us on next. The 73rd annual Directors Guild of America Awards kicked off on Saturday evening. The awards honored the best directing in film and television of the past year.
This year, nominees Lee Isaac Chung for “Minari,” Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman,” David Fincher for “Mank,” Aaron Sorkin for “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” and Chloé Zhao for “Nomadland” vied for the top directorial prize for film, with Zhao winning.
On the TV side, “The Queen’s Gambit,” “Homeland,” and “The Flight Attendant” won the major prizes, shaking up the race as we head into Emmys season.
The DGA prize is often considered a bellwether for the Best Director Oscar. Recent DGA winners that went on to repeat at the Academy Awards include Alfonso Cuarón for “Roma,” Guillermo del Toro for “The Shape of Water,” Damien Chazelle for “La La Land,” and Alejandro G. Iñárritu for both “The Revenant” and “Birdman...

Chloé Zhao was named the best director of 2020 at the 73rd annual Directors Guild Awards, which were presented on Saturday in a virtual ceremony.
Zhao’s win for her quiet road film “Nomadland” makes her the second woman to win the DGA Award for feature film, after Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker” in 2010. Only 10 women have ever been nominated in the category, with this year marking the first time that two female directors were nominated in the category in one year. (The other was Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman.”)
The win for Zhao comes two weeks after “Nomaldland” also won the Producers Guild Award, making it the only film to win more than one prize from the four major guilds. “The Trial of the Chicago 7” won the Screen Actors Guild’s ensemble award, while “Promising Young Woman” and “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” won Writers Guild Awards. Trailblazing director Betty Thomas will receive the DGA’s prestigious Robert B. Aldrich Award for her “extraordinary service to the guild and its members” at the 73rd Annual DGA Awards.
Veteran Upm Brian E. Frankish and longtime CBS operations’ associate director Joyce Thomas will receive special awards for their service to the guild and the industry. The awards show will be held on April 10, but the DGA isn’t saying yet whether it will be virtual or not.
All three recipients have long histories of service to the guild. Betty Thomas serves as the DGA’s secretary-treasurer – the guild’s second-highest elected officer.
“Betty means so much to our guild,” said DGA president Thomas Schlamme. “No matter how busy she’s been throughout her remarkable, ceiling-shattering directing career, she’s always placed service to her fellow members among her highest priorities, fighting for their creative and economic rights. And from the very beginning,...

For those not familiar with the original, it’s about a wealthy Beverly Hills mother (Shelley Long) who leads her daughter’s Wilderness Girl troop after her husband leaves her for another woman. The cast is packed with future stars like Jenny Lewis, Tori Spelling, Carla Gugino, and Kellie Martin.

Emmy recognition for female directors was a long, long time coming. The playing field is a bit more level but has a long way to go. Eght of the 20 nominees for directing in the comedy series, drama series, and movie/limited series categories are women.
The first Emmy for outstanding directing was handed out in 1955 to Franklin Schaffner for the “Studio One” live drama “Twelve Angry Men” (he won an Oscar 15 years later for helming Best Picture champ “Patton”). It wasn’t until 30 years later that a woman director was even nominated in that category. Karen Arthur made history again when she won an Emmy for the “Heat” episode of CBS’ “Cagney & Lacey.” It was the only nomination and win for this prolific TV helmer.
The flood gates didn’t exactly open after Arthur’s win. More women were nominated in this category, but it took another decade for...

I have spent a large portion of my adult life being angry about the disparity between men and women in the arts industry. That was until 2019. Because that’s when I won a Tony Award for producing “Hadestown.” Here’s what I can tell you: Awards are nice, checks are better. It was a lesson taught to me through the years by many important industry heavyweights, including Whoopi Goldberg, an Egot winner. In fairness, one might need to experience both to really understand the magnitude of that statement, but from my experience it’s true.
Obviously, there has been a fantastic leap in the number of female protagonists in the top 100 films — up from 31% in 2018 to 40% in 2019 — but women still only accounted for 10.6% of the directors of those top hits. Those statistics are magnified by the fact that only five women have ever been nominated for the Best Director Oscar...

Forget the Golden Globes’ snub of women directed films in three top categories. When it comes to future growth, what matters is a significant increase in the number — and impact — of female-directed films this year.
Let’s not pretend that equal opportunity is close to reality. But the improvements in just one year are startling. In IndieWire’s 2018 year-end review, we noted that only two of the top domestic 50 grossers were directed by women. “Why this result after ‘Wonder Woman?’ Just figure the usual two year-plus lag for studios to respond after something hits big. The statistic should be improved next year.”
Indeed, improvement is right on schedule.
Women broke records.
Of the year’s approximately 125 wide studio releases, 19 had women as directors. That’s about 15% — hardly huge, but a massive jump over the four directors last year, or the nine in 2017.
Of these, 12 will be among the 100 highest-grossing films.

The American Film Institute’s annual lists highlighting the top 10 movies and TV shows of the year include multiple awards frontrunners. The two juries — which are a mix of critics, academics, and film professionals — always celebrate the best of American cinema and television. Given their international provenance, Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” and Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s “Fleabag” landed Special Awards from the American Film Institute film juries, as “Roma” did last year.
This year’s crop is diverse, with films from lauded veterans Clint Eastwood, Sam Mendes, Martin Scorsese, Noah Baumbach, and Quentin Tarantino alongside relative newcomers to the awards conversation like Todd Phillips, Taika Waititi, and Rian Johnson.
Eight of the ten films were directed by men, with two women, Greta Gerwig (“Little Women”) and Lulu Wang (“The Farewell”), also on deck for the honor. On the TV side, newcomers “Watchmen,” “Fosse/Verdon,” and “Chernobyl” joined returning shows like “The Crown.

The American Film Institute has announced the recipients of the AFI Awards for 2019, the top ten films and TV shows “deemed culturally and artistically representative of this year’s most significant achievements in the art of the moving image.”

“Game of Thrones” has a bunch of Emmy records to its name — most wins by a primetime series, most wins by a series in a single year, most nominations for a drama, most nominations for a drama in a single year, to name a few — but it might add another one in September that it, safe to say, definitely does not want: most Best Drama Supporting Actress nominations without a win.

In today’s film news roundup, AMC starts Artisan Films, Gravitas buys “Boy Genius,” Nesta Cooper gets cast opposite Salma Hayek and Rebel Road launches P12 as a distributor.
Marketing Move
AMC Theatres is launching a new program, AMC Artisan Films, as a programming-marketing effort to put a spotlight on character and narrative driven movies as an alternative to blockbusters.
“Because AMC is the industry’s top choice for blockbuster movies, many consumers don’t realize that we play more elevated and celebrated films than anyone else in North America,” said Elizabeth Frank, executive vice president of worldwide programming. “With the launch of AMC Artisan Films, we aim to expose more movie-goers to specialized films and increase their theatrical success.”
Frank said AMC is seeking earlier runs in platform releases while holding films longer in the theater to give audiences time to learn about them from other customers.

The Directors Guild of America has reelected Thomas Schlamme as its president at the organization’s National Biennial Convention in Beverly Hills on Saturday night, as well as elected a new slate of officers and members of the board of directors.
“It is my honor to once again accept the position of President of the Directors Guild of America,” Schlamme said. “It’s a privilege I don’t take lightly. We’re in a time of immense change, and the next few years will be critical for the DGA and for our industry. I am focused and ready to lead us through our next negotiations, and to ensure that the creative and economic rights of directors and their teams are protected for years to come. And I am fortunate that serving alongside me is a dedicated, experienced team of fellow officers elected to represent our members.”
