Anime had an incredible cultural impact in 2024, taking over streaming services like never before. Specifically, Netflix welcomed a variety of new anime series and films to its platform this past year, with a list of content so varied, there is sure to be something to entertain any anime fan.
There are many fantastic anime movies on Netflix, including Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End Of Evangelion, Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop, and A Whisker Away, to name just a few. However, Netflix's best 2024 anime movie is, surprisingly enough, a live-action film.

Yuichi Sato's energetic flick “City Hunter” is loud, explosive, and in your face. Yet, it knows that, embracing it in a wildly entertaining experience. While many recent Netflix manga/anime adaptations have missed the mark, this movie does Tsukasa Hojo's source material justice, while taking a few creative liberties to tweak aspects for a modern audience. The film has garnered a positive reception from longtime fans of the “City Hunter” franchise, as well as newcomers, being highlighted as the definitive live-action adaptation next to the French version “Nicky Larson et le parfum de Cupidon” by Philippe Lacheau. It is funny to consider it took this long for Japan to adapt Hojo's work for non-animated media, with many prior renditions primarily coming from Hong Kong, the most famous being Wong Jing's “City Hunter” starring Jackie Chan.

Turns out Suzuki went above and beyond to prepare for the role of Ryo Saeba in the film, with the aim of preserving the essence of the original manga while infusing the adaptation with realism and entertainment fit for a live-action film.
One of the most demanding aspects of the role for Suzuki was mastering the intricacies of firearm combat.
During filming, Suzuki tackled six types of firearms, practicing extensively with model guns to ensure seamless handling on set. But his dedication didn’t stop there. To truly understand the nuances of gun handling and recoil, Suzuki underwent four to five days of intensive training abroad,...

City Hunter is a Japanese movie on Netflix directed by Yuichi Satoh and written by Tatsuro Mishima. It stars Ryohei Suzuki and Misato Morita.
Do you enjoy comedies that actually make you laugh? Yes, it sounds simple, straightforward, and pretty obvious, but they’re becoming increasingly rare. “City Hunter” stands out as one of those unique comedies crafted purely for entertainment, centered around a charismatic lead who’s somewhat of a superhero with a penchant for stripping and partying hard.
In the midst of his wild lifestyle, he finds himself on a mission to solve his friend’s murder.
City Hunter Plot
Ryo Saeba, a private detective, spends his off-hours mingling in Kyoto’s clubs and flirting away. His life takes a dramatic turn when his partner is murdered, linking back to a drug that grants extraordinary physical strength to its users but at the cost of driving them utterly insane.

Nathan Zellner and David Zellner’s Sasquatch Sunset is stomping into circa 850 theaters this weekend after debuting in 9 with a solid opening for a film many could find weird. A tribe of Sasquatch, possibly the last of their kind, live and love in the woods of northern California, where it was shot.
“We are taking Bigfoot to America. We have high hopes that the broader market will embrace the movie,” says Kyle Davies of distributor Bleecker Street, calling it “a very different” kind of movie and “a bit of an unknown.”
“It’s a wildcard.”
Marketing was mainly through social activations. “I wouldn’t call it traditional marketing. It doesn’t really fit in that box,” Davies adds. The Sasquatch standees in theaters are fun. And Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar is displaying a baby Sasquatch sitting in a glass case with umbilical cord and placenta.
This is “a polarizing film.

Matsunaga Daishi’s Egoist is a love duet full of intimate gestures. “I hated my hometown so much, I fled it, at 18, for Tokyo,” confesses Kosuke (Suzuki Ryohei), in voiceover. “For me, clothes are armor.” Though the gay fashion magazine editor, who lost his mother at age 14, seems much more at home in the more socially liberal Tokyo, he still hides behind his sharp style and his money. That is, until he meets Ryuta (Miyazawa Hio), a fitness trainer to whom he feels an immediate bond. And through these two young men from decidedly different backgrounds, Matsunaga’s film considers how class, capitalism, and core wounds collide, infect, and also inspire the heart’s most tender desires.
It isn’t long after Kosuke starts training with Ryuta that the two become romantically linked. Theirs is a carnal connection that deepens and complicates as they learn more about each other. In some ways,...

While "Dune: Part Two" continues to dominate the box office, Netflix is bringing a whole lot of new titles to the platform -- and we're doing our best to make sure that not all of them get lost in the algorithm.
This April, Netflix is bringing some highly anticipated titles, including what was once meant to be a spin-off of "Doom Patrol" (the best superhero show that isn't a superhero show), a brand new anime from the studio behind "Ranking of Kings," and not one but two live-action adaptations of beloved manga — including one created by the director of "Train to Busan."
Because of the almighty algorithm, it can be hard to filter through the many titles getting released on streaming every week, let alone know they even exist. That's what this guide is for, as we go through our top picks for what we're hoping are some of the...

If you ever asked an anime fan about their views on a live-action adaptation of their favorite anime or manga series, you wouldn’t get a positive response from them. Live-action adaptations have always managed to disappoint fans and have never been liked by fans until Netlfix’s One Piece live-action came and changed the scene.

Reality TV series “Love Village” will add a second season and comedy talk show “Last One Standing” will add a third as part of Netflix’s 2024 live action offering. The slate, revealed on Thursday, is long on romance, comedy and fantasy.
Earlier this month, consultancy and research firm Media Partners Asia said that Netflix is the second most watched SVOD platform in Japan (behind Prime Video) and the third most-watched premium streamer (behind Tver and Prime Video). While re-runs boost other platforms “original dramas and variety have had clear acquisition impact for Netflix,” Media Partners Asia said in its latest report, and cited “Love Village” and “First Love” as leading examples.
“Last One Standing,” in which comedians must narrate stories that are both personal and funny or face elimination, hails from United Productions and comedy talent agency Yoshimoto Kogyo. A third season will be available in 2024, but is currently undated.

The love of self and the love of others are deeply intertwined, according to everyone from ancient philosophers to “Drag Race” host Ru Paul. We must be anchored in a solid space of self-love in order to let someone else into our lives. On its surface, this is the key tenet of Daishi Matsunaga’s “Egoist” (ergo its title). But that sentiment serves instead to highlight how this maudlin Japanese drama about a gay man in his 30s coping with love and loss, rarely moves beyond the readymade platitudes that litter its well-meaning narrative.
Based on the late Makoto Takayama’s autobiographical novel of the same name, “Egoist” follows Saitô Kôsuke (Ryohei Suzuki), a magazine editor whose picture-perfect life includes an immaculately designed condo, a quick-paced job surrounded by fashion and photography, a closet full of beautiful designer clothes and a coterie of gay male friends with whom he handily gets along.

As the discourse in Japan regarding same-sex marriage is currently on the rise, films about the topic overall are bound to come out in more frequency. One of those films is Daishi Matsunaga's “Egoist”, based on the homonymous, autobiographical novel by Makoto Takayama, which was recently screened in Tokyo International.
“Egoist” is screening at Udine Far East Film Festival
When Kosuke was 14 years old, his mother died. He spent his adolescence in a rural village and suppressed his feelings as a gay male. As the film begins, however, we find him having turned his life completely upside down, working as a fashion magazine editor in Tokyo, looking rather smart in his designer clothes and overall handsomeness, and having a circle of friends that seem both dedicated and a constant source of fun for him. One day, after the suggestion of one of them, Kosuke starts working with Ryuta, a...

Despite the fiasco that was Netflix's "Cowboy Bebop" live-action series and the atrocity that was their previous "Death Note" live-action movie, it seems the streaming service is determined to keep making live-action anime adaptations until something sticks. Indeed, they currently have several live-action anime re-imaginings in some stage of development, including projects based on "My Hero Academia," "One Piece," and "Yu Yu Hakusho."
To be fair, these are all sensible choices for live-action adaptations; each of these properties are incredibly popular and play into character archetypes, themes, and stories that resonate across the globe. "My Hero Academia" is literally about superheroes (and superheroes are very hot right now), while the other two are action-adventure stories with supernatural elements and tons of fights and comedic moments alike -- not to mention, they also feature characters with superpowers.

While earlier, James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez jokingly made a blood oath to make a sequel to their adaptation of the popular manga Alita: Battle Angel, now it looks as if another manga adaptation is coming to the small screen with a live-action City Hunter film currently in the works. Previously the pulp Japanese comic was adapted to live-action in the broad comedic action film 1993’s City Hunter, with international action star Jackie Chan in the lead role.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix will be adapting the comic into a new feature film, describing it as, “a modern-day updated version of the manga, set in the bustling streets of Shinjuku.” The logline reads, “When Ryo’s partner Makimura is killed, he and Makimura’s sister Kaori team up to find out the truth, thus forming a new duo.”

In another boost to its growing Japanese content slate, Netflix has greenlit a live-action movie adaptation of the classic Japanese manga City Hunter. Japanese leading man Ryohei Suzuki (Tokyo Mer, Segodon) has signed on to star in the iconic role of Ryo Saeba, with filmmaker Yuichi Sato (Kisaragi, Strawberry Nights and The End of the Tiny World) onboard to direct.
Created by manga artist Tsukasa Hojo, City Hunter was a staple of Japanese pop culture throughout the 1980s, selling over 50 million copies around the world. The franchise spawned a popular anime series and numerous feature-length adaptations, including movies made in Hong Kong (one starring Jackie Chan), France and mainland China, but this will be there first time the property is adapted as a live-action film in its native Japan.
Netflix describes the project as “a modern-day updated version of the manga, set in the bustling streets of Shinjuku.

The first full trailer for Japan's live-action adaptation of the anime series Gatchaman has been released! The original series was produced in Japan in 1972 and was eventually brought to the states in the '80s and retitled Battle of the Planets. A few years ago a CG animated adaptation of the series was being developed by the animation studio Imagi, but when they went out of business the movie died, which is a shame.
I would have loved to see the animated film they were working on, but the live-action movie still looks cool, and I'm sure it will be really fun, especially for those of us who are fans of the original series. Here's the synopsis:
Set in the near future, Gatchaman follows the story five special agents of the International Science Organization in Tokyo as they try to protect the world from the mysterious terrorist group who call themselves Galactor.
