For 12 years and the same number of seasons, Simon Helberg played Howard Wolowitz — the turtleneck-wearing, would-be lothario who's best friends with Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons), Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki), and Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar) — so you'd think it would be tough for him to really hone in on his favorite episodes. You'd be a little bit right about that, actually.

In an interview with Newsweek in April of 2022 to promote his film "As They Made Us" — directed by Mayim Bialik, who played Sheldon's girlfriend and eventual wife Amy Farrah Fowler and worked alongside Helberg on "The Big Bang Theory" — Helberg said he couldn't really choose a "favorite" episode of the long-running Chuck Lorre sitcom. "I don't have a quick answer for that," Helberg replied when asked about his all-time favorite episode. "I guess the answer is, I don't have a favorite one.

Once upon a time, there was a sitcom called "Rhoda." It was a spinoff of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," and was an instant smash. How instant? Early in the first season, Rhoda got married, and the episode was watched by over 52 million television viewers. It was the highest-rated episode of television in the 1970s until the premiere of "Roots" in 1977, and served as a bit of a sitcom laboratory for James L. Brooks and Allan Burns. "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" was groundbreaking in its own right, but, at least early in the series, Brooks and his writers were a little looser on "Rhoda."

One of their most brilliant ideas was to introduce a regular character who is heard but never seen. "The Andy Griffith Show" had done this on occasion with Barney Fife's beloved Juanita Beasley, but "Rhoda" turned the alcoholic Carlton the Doorman into something of a sensation.

A show doesn't necessarily have to feature "likable" characters in order to qualify as a "good" show. The characters on "Succession" are all varying degrees of reprehensible. Every single member of "the gang" on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is extremely horrible (on purpose). If you actively rooted for Walter White by the end of "Breaking Bad," you should give that a second thought. All of this is to say that likability isn't a required trait for fictional characters, but some shows do want you to relate to their characters somehow.

"The Big Bang Theory" doesn't have the venom or acidity of either "Succession" or "Always Sunny," and it seems to want you to identify with at least one of its main characters. I recently lost my mother after taking care of her for many years. My father died almost a decade ago. But this is not a sob story, it’s a journey of discovery I found mirrored on television. The Big Bang Theory has been a favorite of mine since it premiered (as a chemist, I appreciate it having actual science jokes), and over the past seven seasons, I have grown with the characters. The series improved and matured when it added female scientists Bernadette Rostenkowski and Amy Farrah Fowler to the main cast, demonstrating that geeks and other intelligent people are not all extras from Revenge of the Nerds. Particularly helped by the addition of these characters was Howard Wolowitz. Played by Simon Helberg, Howard has developed the most out of all the characters over the series’ run, going from a wannabe pick-up artist mamma’s boy to a caring and supportive husband to Bernadette.

Following Thursday’s episode, the CBS Chuck Lorre sitcom posted an end-credits photo tribute to Leonard Nimoy. “The impact you had on our show and on our lives is everlasting,” the vanity card read. The Big Bang Theory said goodbye to a beloved character last night, Howard's (Simon Helberg) mom Mrs. Wolowitz's, but her death will have some long-lasting impressions on the hit CBS comedy and the characters at its heart. Carol Ann Susi, the voice of Mrs. Wolowitz's who was never seen on screen, passed away in November 2014 and her character also passed away suddenly in the Thursday, Feb. 19 episode of The Big Bang Theory. CBS has pulled The McCarthys from its schedule sooner than planned, replacing the freshman comedy with Big Bang Theory repeats effectively immediately.

The Futon Critic was first to note the scheduling change.

The McCarthys was always scheduled to go on hiatus before exhausting its 15-episode freshman run, following its Feb. 12 broadcast. (Two and a Half Men‘s hour-long series finale fills the 9:30 time slot on Feb. 19, and from there on CBS’ Thursday sitcom slate is to be as follows: new Big Bang, Odd Couple, Big Bang rerun, Mom.)

TVLine has confirmed that the CBS sitcom’s Feb. 19 episode — “The Comic Book Store Regeneration” — finds Howard grappling with shocking news concerning his mother. The (presumably) tragic turn of events coincides with the reopening of Stuart’s comic book store — a shop that, much to Howard’s shock and awe, features a new seating area filled with furniture from his mom’s home.
