For 12 years and the same number of seasons, Simon Helberg played Howard Wolowitz — the turtleneck-wearing, would-be lothario who's best friends with Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons), Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki), and Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar) — so you'd think it would be tough for him to really hone in on his favorite episodes. You'd be a little bit right about that, actually.
In an interview with Newsweek in April of 2022 to promote his film "As They Made Us" — directed by Mayim Bialik, who played Sheldon's girlfriend and eventual wife Amy Farrah Fowler and worked alongside Helberg on "The Big Bang Theory" — Helberg said he couldn't really choose a "favorite" episode of the long-running Chuck Lorre sitcom. "I don't have a quick answer for that," Helberg replied when asked about his all-time favorite episode. "I guess the answer is, I don't have a favorite one.

One of the most strangely specific sitcom tropes is the unseen character. These range from Niles Crane's (David Hyde Pierce) increasingly physically impossible wife Maris on "Frasier" to gentler takes on the subject, like Wilson (Earl Hindman) on "Home Improvement."
"The Big Bang Theory" is no exception to the all-permeating presence of the trope, courtesy of Howard Wolowitz's (Simon Helberg) unseen but very much heard mother, Debbie Wolowitz. An abrasive and imposing presence in Howard's life, Mrs. Wolowitz is nevertheless a force of good and an important figure to both him and most of the show's other main characters.
Since the character is, for all intents and purposes, just a voice on "The Big Bang Theory," fans may have noticed a marked difference in how she sounds on "Young Sheldon." This isn't because the actor who voices Mrs. Wolowitz on "The Big Bang Theory," Carol Ann Susi, was told to...

The Big Bang Theory wasn’t short on oddball moments, but Bernadette’s craziest secret hit like a plot twist from outer space. Turns out, the sweet and sassy Melissa Rauch was pulling off an acting masterclass in disguise.

From time to time, "The Big Bang Theory" would bring on some pretty big names to play the family members of its main characters. Just to name a few, Christine Baranski plays Dr. Beverly Hofstadter, mother to Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki), Laurie Metcalf plays Sheldon Cooper's (Jim Parsons) mom Mary Cooper, and Kathy Bates shows up as Mrs. Fowler, the mom of Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik). Dads get some play too; memorably, Penny's (Kaley Cuoco) dad Wyatt is played by "Revenge of the Nerds" star Keith Carradine. But what about Howard Wolowitz, played by Simon Helberg? We hear but never see his mother, voiced by character actor Carol Ann Susi, but we never meet his dad. Apparently, though, Helberg and some of the show's producers really, really wanted "Ghostbusters," "Little Shop of Horrors," and "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" star Rick Moranis to play Mr. Wolowitz.

There are plenty of TV show characters who prove themselves to be absolute Grinches, as in characters who don't like Christmas at all even if they technically observe it. Fans of "The Big Bang Theory" know and love Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz — played by Melissa Rauch — and if you know one thing about Bernadette, it's that she has a comically, borderline cartoonishly high-pitched voice. Rauch, who's quite short, uses her voice to create a character that feels larger than life despite her diminutive stature, and it totally works. Even though she feels almost non-threatening at first, Bernadette basically uses her voice as a weapon, keeping her husband Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) in line and forging a successful career in the pharmaceutical industry. So how did Rauch come up with it? She used her mother, who's from New Jersey, as inspiration during her audition.
As Rauch told her co-star Mayim Bialik — who played Bernadette's friend Amy Farrah Fowler on the series — on Bialik's podcast "Bialik Breakdown" in 2023, she came up with the...

When a sitcom spends a long time on air, the show's writers end up adding in all sorts of plot devices to keep things interesting, whether they decide to break up a main couple or, say, make two main characters have a baby. As fans of "The Big Bang Theory" know, two of its leads — Howard Wolowitz and Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz, played by Simon Helberg and Melissa Rauch — have a baby in the show's ninth season, and apparently, both stars were really worried about this storyline.
In Jessica Radloff's 2022 book "The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series," Helberg details how he and Rauch pushed back a bit when writers revealed Howard and Bernadette were going to have a baby. "We rarely ever went to producers or writers with any kind of concerns, especially story concerns," Helberg recalled. "That might have been the only time.

An indispensable aspect of popular culture that has produced some of the best shows of all time, sitcoms number among the most widely watched and influential forms of television out there. Featuring beloved and long-running names like The Office, Peep Show, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the best sitcoms of all time chronicle a diverse array of stories from all walks of life, continuously evolving and highlighting that there is no set formula for a show to become wildly successful.
However, for every superb sitcom that deserves every bit of the praise that it receives, there's at least one counterpart that leaves viewers scratching their heads as to how the show even got off the ground in the first place. Whether the sitcom played out as an insufferable mess from its very first scene, or steadily fell off in terms of quality and innovation as the show progressed,...

When you think about Chuck Lorre's sitcom "The Big Bang Theory," which ran for 12 seasons and the same number of years on CBS, you probably don't think of the word "death." That's understandable. "The Big Bang Theory" is, for the most part, a pretty light-hearted sitcom ... but with that said, a handful of characters do die (off-screen) throughout the series, which has a massive impact on the story.
Some of the characters who die off-screen are only mentioned in throwaway lines, so they won't be included here. For example, Johnny Galecki's Leonard Hofstadter mentions that his uncle Floyd died in the show's third season, which is also when Bernadette Rostenkowski (Melissa Rauch) misses a gathering with Leonard's visiting mother because her grandmother just passed away. From a professor whose passing creates a vacancy to a death that was written into the show after the actor passed away,...

The Big Bang Theory can easily be a fan favorite with its sarcasm-filled and science-infused storylines. The beloved sitcom ruled the CBS screens from 2007 to 2019 and focused on four socially awkward scientists and their quirky neighbor Penny. The fans of the sitcom know almost everything about their favorite stars. However, their height has always been a point of discussion amongst the viewers.

Melissa Rauch entered the show in its third season and quickly became a fan favorite with her portrayal of Bernadette.

During the 12 season run of "The Big Bang Theory," the audience meet the main characters' parents and extended families from time to time — and those parents and family members are usually played by some pretty big performers. The death of Mrs. Wolowitz on The Big Bang Theory was one of its most tragic moments, and the reason Howard's Mom left the show is just as sad. Many of Howard's funniest moments in Tbbt come from his yelled conversations with his overbearing mother Mrs. Wolowitz (voiced by Carol Ann Susi), who famously is never shown on screen. Mrs. Wolowitz is every bit of an aggressive helicopter mother stereotype: overly attached, overprotective, and ever-present, using food and guilt as weapons. Despite her challenging personality, Howard's Mom's death was an incredibly heavy blow to Howard, viewers, and The Big Bang Theory cast for a key reason actress Carol Ann Susi passed away.
Mrs. Wolowitz's Big Bang Theory death was a shock. The odd relationship between Howard and Mrs. Wolowitz was a recurring gag since The Big Bang Theory season 1, with Howard's mom later sharing many hilarious scenes with other characters like Bernadette and Stuart.

As an aerospace engineer with aspirations of becoming an astronaut (a dream he eventually realizes), Simon Helberg's Howard Wolowitz is the resident cad of "The Big Bang Theory." He's totally harmless, but he still deserves the myriad comeuppances he receives when he badly overrates his smooth-talking skills. Whether you were relieved or disappointed when Howard finally established a love connection with Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) depends on how much you could stomach his clumsily boorish antics prior to settling down. The unexpected death of his lovingly overbearing mother, Debbie (Carol Ann Susi), softened most viewers' opinion of Howard, but there were times in later seasons where she was missed –- ditto Howard's romantic misadventures.

Once upon a time, there was a sitcom called "Rhoda." It was a spinoff of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," and was an instant smash. How instant? Early in the first season, Rhoda got married, and the episode was watched by over 52 million television viewers. It was the highest-rated episode of television in the 1970s until the premiere of "Roots" in 1977, and served as a bit of a sitcom laboratory for James L. Brooks and Allan Burns. "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" was groundbreaking in its own right, but, at least early in the series, Brooks and his writers were a little looser on "Rhoda."
One of their most brilliant ideas was to introduce a regular character who is heard but never seen. "The Andy Griffith Show" had done this on occasion with Barney Fife's beloved Juanita Beasley, but "Rhoda" turned the alcoholic Carlton the Doorman into something of a sensation.

A show doesn't necessarily have to feature "likable" characters in order to qualify as a "good" show. The characters on "Succession" are all varying degrees of reprehensible. Every single member of "the gang" on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is extremely horrible (on purpose). If you actively rooted for Walter White by the end of "Breaking Bad," you should give that a second thought. All of this is to say that likability isn't a required trait for fictional characters, but some shows do want you to relate to their characters somehow.
"The Big Bang Theory" doesn't have the venom or acidity of either "Succession" or "Always Sunny," and it seems to want you to identify with at least one of its main characters. Still, Chuck Lorre's show wants to have it both ways and paint these same characters as larger-than-life to the point where some of them are incredibly off-putting ... so much so,...

With a dozen seasons of hilarious misadventures of some of the most beloved geeks in sitcom history, The Big Bang Theory boasts a sizeable following, and with great fanfare, at that.
But much like any other piece of entertainment, the Chuck Lorre & Bill Prady-created show isn’t immune to public opprobrium, most of which gravitates around a perceived lack of emotion-evoking content.

The Big Bang Theory characters are reimagined as CGI figures in new AI art, resembling Pixar-style animation. The transition to CGI form varies in success, with some characters like Sheldon appearing disconcerting and others more true to themselves. Cuoco, Nayyar, Parsons, and Bialik have had successful careers post-The Big Bang Theory, with Cuoco starring in The Flight Attendant.

Mrs. Wolowitz's absence from The Big Bang Theory was a deliberate choice by the writers, paying homage to famous sitcom characters who were known for their voices but never their image. The decision to keep Mrs. Wolowitz off-screen was also influenced by a character from the show Rhoda, Carlton the Doorman, who was always heard but never seen. The character of Mrs. Wolowitz was written off the show following the death of actress Carol Ann Susi, who portrayed her. This was done as a tribute to both the character and the actress.
One of the longest-running gags on The Big Bang Theory was that the writers never showed Howard's mom, Mrs. Wolowitz (Carol Ann Susi) — and while it's a fun recurring joke, their reasoning behind it is surprisingly deep. Mrs. Wolowitz was the stereotypical overbearing mother who didn't want her son to advance in his life for fear of losing him.

Howard's dad's letter on his 18th birthday remains a frustrating mystery from The Big Bang Theory, leaving viewers curious about its contents even years after the show ended. The show provided several theories about what could be in Howard's dad's letter, but the true contents were never revealed, adding depth to Howard's character. Ultimately, the letter's contents don't matter as much as the support and love from Howard's found family, showing that it's who's there for him that counts, not those who abandoned him.
What Howard's dad wrote in the letter to him on his 18th birthday is one of the most frustrating loose ends left by The Big Bang Theory — and over five years since the show ended many viewers still want to know what did Howard's dad's letter say. Young Sheldon season 2 cleverly brought together three generations of the Wolowitz family through a combination of archived recordings and new voiceovers. The nostalgic final sequence featuring Young Howard in Young Sheldon's closing montage became the most-watched episode of season 2, thanks to the ingeniously adorable casting. Young Sheldon's tribute to The Big Bang Theory's Howard's character was made even sweeter by combining the voices of Howard's original screen mother and his future daughter's actor.
When a younger version of The Big Bang Theory’s Howard showed up in Young Sheldon season 2, the sitcom spinoff managed to make his appearance even sweeter with a clever cameo casting arrangement. Throughout The Big Bang Theory, comedic actor Carol Ann Susi proved a fan favorite thanks to her role as Howard’s overbearing, raspy-voiced mother. Although Ms. Deborah "Debbie" Wolowitz never appeared onscreen, her gravelly yelling was heard often throughout the sitcom’s long run.

The Big Bang Theory, despite its problematic comedy, can showcase thoughtful storytelling and heartfelt moments when it wants to. Emotional moments include Mrs. Wolowitz's death, Sheldon's deep conversation with Penny in the bathroom, and Raj's heartbreaks. The show also explores meaningful relationships, such as Amy and Sheldon's wedding, Leonard and Beverly finally fixing their relationship, and Penny and Leonard getting engaged.
In its 12 seasons on the air, The Big Bang Theory has some surprising emotional moments. The Big Bang Theory may be one of the most popular sitcoms of all time, but it isn't exactly lauded for its storytelling. In fact, it is criticized for its problematic brand of comedy, especially during its earlier years. The inclusion of the distracting laugh track doesn't help its cause. Still, The Big Bang Theory is still able to find its devoted fan base, so much so that CBS launched a spin-off, Young Sheldon.

The Big Bang Theory is one of the most famous and iconic modern-day sitcoms.
Sprawling Twelve Seasons, the series followed a group of brainiac friends and their exploits in love, life, and the search for knowledge.
The show garnered ten Emmy awards, four of which went to lead actor Jim Parsons, yet the show never nabbed the Best Comedy award.
The series has also spawned a spinoff series, Young Sheldon. Another spinoff series is in the works at Max, but the plot is unknown at this time.
While the series creator, Chuck Lorre, has continuous success with sitcoms on CBS, what has the main cast done? Find out below!
John Ross Bowie - Barry Kripke
Barry Kripke, a rival of Sheldon's and an overall annoying character, was played brilliantly by John Ross Bowie.
During his extended guest stint on The Big Bang Theory, he starred in the sitcom Speechless, starring Minni Driver.

The Big Bang Theory's Debbie Wolowitz was never seen on camera but she can be heard throughout the series with her iconic New York accent. As a divorced mother of one, Debbie dedicated her life to her son and found it hard to let go of that life as Howard grew. Even as a working adult with a master's degree in engineering, Howard still lived at home.

In one of the funniest episodes we've seen in a while, The Big Bang Theory Season 10 Episode 12, "The Holiday Summation," also delves into some pretty serious issues.
The gang gets together for the first time since the holidays, and they all have stories of an imperfect holiday season.

Sheldon and Amy
Sheldon and Amy's trip to Texas is eventful to say the least. With it we get the return of Sheldon's mother, which is always a treat.
What Mary reveals in her reaction to the news that Amy and Sheldon are living together is as funny as it is important. She always worried Sheldon would end up alone.
She also alludes, quite obviously, to Sheldon's autistic characteristics when she recalls Sheldon's ability to memorize trains when he was three.
For a moment, I thought Mary might actually reveal a diagnosis.

While one of the strongest ensembles on television today, The Big Bang Theory has come to revolve around the socially awkward Sheldon (Jim Parsons), so it makes perfect sense that the eighth season began and ended with the brilliant scientist. Sandwiched in-between, the series slowly advanced the cast of characters through their lives and thankfully Chuck Lorre has not prevented them from growing.
Warner Bros Home Entertainment releases The Big Bang Theory The Complete Eighth Season this week and the combo pack contains all 245 episodes on Blu-ray and Digital HD. We open with Sheldon, 45 days after leaving on a train, only to call Leonard (Johnny Galecki) to come rescue him from Kingman, Arizona. Accompany him is Amy (Mayim Bialik), who has been hurt by Sheldon’s actions, which remains a recurring theme through the season, setting up the finale, where she puts their relationship on hold just as he was about to propose.

I recently lost my mother after taking care of her for many years. My father died almost a decade ago. But this is not a sob story, it’s a journey of discovery I found mirrored on television. The Big Bang Theory has been a favorite of mine since it premiered (as a chemist, I appreciate it having actual science jokes), and over the past seven seasons, I have grown with the characters. The series improved and matured when it added female scientists Bernadette Rostenkowski and Amy Farrah Fowler to the main cast, demonstrating that geeks and other intelligent people are not all extras from Revenge of the Nerds. Particularly helped by the addition of these characters was Howard Wolowitz. Played by Simon Helberg, Howard has developed the most out of all the characters over the series’ run, going from a wannabe pick-up artist mamma’s boy to a caring and supportive husband to Bernadette.

The Big Bang Theory said goodbye to a beloved character last night, Howard's (Simon Helberg) mom Mrs. Wolowitz's, but her death will have some long-lasting impressions on the hit CBS comedy and the characters at its heart. Carol Ann Susi, the voice of Mrs. Wolowitz's who was never seen on screen, passed away in November 2014 and her character also passed away suddenly in the Thursday, Feb. 19 episode of The Big Bang Theory. The show decided to kill the character off rather than send her away, which would have felt "false and fake," according to Steve Molaro. But don't expect to see a funeral. "There will not be a funeral episode. This is so tricky for us and for the tone of the show to let...

The Big Bang Theory just said goodbye to a beloved member of its family. (Warning, spoilers ahead!) Following the passing of star Carol Ann Susi, who played Howard Wolowitz's (Simon Helberg) mother, Mrs. Wolowitz, in November 2014, the CBS hit sitcom delivered a heartbreaking episode on Thursday: Mrs. Wolowitz died. Toward the end of the episode, Wolowitz received a phone call, only to return a little later to inform his friends that his mother passed away. "My mom died. That was my aunt, Ma took a nap. She never woke up," he said, before turning to his wife Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) for comfort. And while he usually always says the wrong thing at the wrong time, Sheldon (JIm...

Though she was never seen on camera, The Big Bang Theory‘s Mrs. Wolowitz has arguably played as big a role on the show as Leonard, Sheldon and Penny.
Often the butt of obesity jokes — usually made, in poor taste, by son Howard — and prone to getting a little too overprotective of her only child, Mrs. Wolowitz has been recognizable to fans of the CBS comedy through only her voice, as she shouted to Howard from other rooms of her house.

After 12 seasons, 262 episodes and one very public meltdown, Two and a Half Men comes to an end Thursday night (CBS, 9/8c).
Over the course of its long run, the comedy has provided as many laughs as it has guest stars, making it difficult to remember just how many familiar faces have passed through the Harper-Schmidt residence.

I know some Irish eyes that aren’t smilin’.
CBS has pulled The McCarthys from its schedule sooner than planned, replacing the freshman comedy with Big Bang Theory repeats effectively immediately.
The Futon Critic was first to note the scheduling change.
The McCarthys was always scheduled to go on hiatus before exhausting its 15-episode freshman run, following its Feb. 12 broadcast. (Two and a Half Men‘s hour-long series finale fills the 9:30 time slot on Feb. 19, and from there on CBS’ Thursday sitcom slate is to be as follows: new Big Bang, Odd Couple, Big Bang rerun, Mom.)

This week on CBS’ Person of Interest, Reese and Root followed the Samaritan van to a hurting hamlet, hoping to find Shaw, alive. But perhaps nothing could prepare them for what they did discover in mild-mannered Maple, N.Y.

Recently, TV Line talked with Big Bang Theory executive producer, Steve Molaro, to get the spoiler scoopage for the back half of the show. It turns out that they're going to do a special tribute to Carol Ann Susi who voiced Wolowitz's mother. We're probably not going to see Penny and Leonard rush down the wedding aisle, and more. In their new spoiler report, here's what they had to say: "Although Ep Steve Molaro says the writers "aren't in a rush for a Leonard and Penny wedding," upcoming episodes will dive into the finer points of their engagement -- specifically, "future living arrangements regarding Sheldon." Also in the next batch of episodes: a tribute to Carol Ann Susi, the late actress who voiced Wolowitz's mother. ("The death of Carol will be dealt with," Molaro says. " We just needed time to process the loss of our friend.") As for Sheldon and Amy's slow-burn relationship,...

A version of this story first appeared in the Nov. 28 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Carol Ann Susi was born in Brooklyn. Born isn't a strong enough word. Might be better to say that Carol Ann Susi was made out of Brooklyn — tough, street smart, hysterically funny. Her accent seemed to grow stronger every year, as if New York's most pugnacious borough could use her as a supernatural portal to emerge undiluted in Los Angeles. Carol Ann would have liked that metaphor — she was a die-hard Doctor Who fan. She was a county fair cooking

The 62-year-old Susi played the voice of Howard's (Simon Helberg) mother, Mrs. Wolowitz, who was never seen onscreen, but was a core part of the show, and the stars are already missing her presence on set.
