The 1986 horror comedy House, directed by Steve Miner from a screenplay by Ethan Wiley (based on a story by Fred Dekker), has a solid cult following to this day. The 1987 standalone sequel House II: The Second Story (watch it Here), which was written and directed by Wiley (again from a story by Dekker), has a less positive reputation than its predecessor. But there are fans out there who enjoy House II even more than the first House – and I happen to be one of those fans. So I’m very happy to see that JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek has decided to celebrate House II: The Second Story, which has been a favorite of mine since childhood, with a new video that digs into The Best Scene in the movie! You can check it out in the embed above.

It’s not even October, but Massachusetts is already being spoiled with horror events. A mere week after Silver Scream Con took place in Danvers, Terror Con slashed into the Royal Plaza Trade Center in Marlborough on September 15-17.
Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund, had the longest lines throughout the weekend. He was joined by several other A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise alumni: Part 1’s Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, and Ronee Blakeley; Part 2’s Mark Patton and Kim Myers; Part 4’s Lisa Wilcox and Nicholas Mele; Part 5’s Erika Anderson, Whit Hertford, and Beatrice Boepple; and Freddy vs. Jason‘s Monica Keena.
Other big draws included Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Edward Furlong (Terminator 2), pro wrestling legend Mick Foley, The Walking Dead‘s Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Chandler Riggs, Emily Kinney, and Katelyn Nacon, Danielle Harris (Halloween), Sherilyn Fenn (Twin Peaks), John Kassir (Tales from the Crypt), and a Fright Night reunion with Chris Sarandon,...

Well ladies and gentlemen, we’re basically two-thirds of the way through October, and you know what that means. It means the Season of the Witch is upon us. All Hallows’ Eve. The time when death and dismemberment and ghosts and goblins and monsters of all types go mainstream, and every product suddenly grows pumpkin spice crazy. I swear I saw a can of pumpkin spice insect repellant in the supermarket the other day. Or maybe that was just a hallucination.
Another thing we have come to count on during Halloween season is horror movies, of course – but not just the “Halloween” or “Friday the 13th” or “A Nightmare on Elm Street” variety. I’m talking about the films that blend scares and laughs in almost equal measure, that simultaneously test our nerves and tickle our funny bone. Fright and mirth can coexist just fine, we’ve come to learn.

It’s time for a new episode of the Revisited video series, and in this one we’re looking back at a 1980s classic that is widely considered to be one of the best vampire movies ever made, writer/director Tom Holland’s Fright Night (watch it Here)! To find out what we had to say about Fright Night, check out the video embedded above.
Fright Night has the following synopsis:
Teenage Charley Brewster is a horror-film junkie, so it’s no surprise that, when a reclusive new neighbor named Jerry Dandridge moves next-door, Brewster becomes convinced he is a vampire. It’s also no surprise when nobody believes him. However, after strange events begin to occur, Charlie has no choice but to turn to the only person who could possibly help: washed-up television vampire killer Peter Vincent.

Synopsis
Meet Jerry Dandrige. He’s sweet, sexy, and he likes to sleep in late. You might think he’s the perfect neighbor. But before inviting Jerry in for a nightcap, there’s just one thing you should know. Jerry prefers his drinks warm, red, and straight from the jugular! It’s Fright Night, a horrific howl starring Chris Sarandon as the seductive vampire and William Ragsdale as the frantic teenager struggling to keep Jerry’s deadly fangs out of his neck. Only 17-year-old Charley Brewster (Ragsdale) knows Jerry’s bloodcurdling secret. When Charley can’t get anybody to believe him, he turns to TV horror host Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall), who used to be the “Great Vampire Killer” of the movies. Can these mortals save Charley and his sweetheart Amy (Amanda Bearse) from the wrathful bloodsucker’s toothy embrace? If you love being scared, Fright Night…will give you the nightmare of your life.

Why does Fright Night, the 1985 vampire teen horror-comedy curio, endure as a great movie long past its expected sell-by date? Because writer/director Tom Holland’s Fright Night extends its core subject matter, vampiric transformation, into a studied allegory for the painful, violent uncertainty of adolescence. And because it unflinchingly tackles the two underlying themes at the core of the best horror fodder: sex and death. In the spirit of Halloween, this writer wanted to tackle one of his favorite ’80s creature features. So welcome to the first Tfh review of Fright Night… for real.

We should go ahead and rename December 12th “Arrow Video Day,” because the fine fiends over there have a ton of titles coming out this Tuesday, including Special Edition sets for The Premonition and Malatesta’s Carnival of Blood, and they’ve also put together standalone special edition Blu-rays for both House and House II: The Second Story. Severin Films is resurrecting Asylum this Tuesday, and fans can finally get their hands on the latest season of Game of Thrones, as well as a box set featuring every episode from all seven seasons.
Other notable releases for December 12th include K-Shop, Once Upon A Time at Christmas, Brackenmore, The Snake Woman, Beware the Lake, and Hollow Creek.

[Editor's Note: A version of this retrospective originally appeared in the September 2014 issue of Deadly Magazine.] With House II: The Second Story, the vastly underrated sequel written and directed by Ethan Wiley (who also wrote the screenplay for the original House), New World Pictures introduced audiences to a whole new world filled with unexpected frights and adventures with an Old West twist. The sequel was released in late August of 1987 and took a decidedly left turn away from the more straightforward house of horrors style seen in Steve Miner’s original film, instead favoring a tone that was much more light-hearted, fun-spirited, and far more family friendly.
For the uninitiated, House II follows a young man named Jesse (Arye Gross), who inherits a strange house from the parents who gave him up for adoption when he was just an infant. As he begins to settle into his new dwelling with the help of his girlfriend, Kate (Lar Park Lincoln), his best pal, Charlie (Jonathan Stark), and Charlie’s aspiring musician girlfriend,...

Growing up, I was a big fan of both House and House II: The Second Story, so as you can imagine, Arrow Video’s recent House: Two Stories Blu-ray collection was right up my proverbial alley. Both films look better here than they did on DVD (which is how I’ve been viewing them for years now), the new retrospective featurettes do a great job of diving deep into both movies, and the other supplemental materials included are a welcome blast from the past. For fans who are on the fence about adding House: Two Stories to your home media collections, I can emphatically say this set is well worth the investment.
In House (1986), we meet famed writer Roger Cobb (William Katt), a Vietnam vet with a slumping career and a marriage that has hit the skids after his son disappeared while visiting Roger’s aunt Elizabeth in her gothic abode one fateful day.

I don’t want to reveal my hand to early on this one, but then again you guys probably know by now that I don’t rip into any film to tear it to shreds. Typically, it’s for two reasons. I see what they were trying to do with a limited budget. The heart is there, but the money ain’t. Also, I’ve had to double back on my opinions of films on the first watch. Hating it in the beginning, and then seeing something or things on another viewing that shows me that I had a gross error in judgment. Well, “Mr. Hush” puts me into a purgatory of indecision.

One of House II: The Second Story’s taglines was “It’s getting weirder!”, although if you caught Steve Miner’s original film expectations should have been high that House II would be as frenetic and chaotic. But Ethan Wiley’s sequel does nothing with the first film, instead branching off of the notion that old houses have crazy secrets and running with it into western sub-genre terrain. Because House already paved the way for Wiley do off-the-wall shit, House II takes things even further – both with the zany storyline and with the comedy, which was always apparent in the first film but much bleaker than the slapstick here.
The Second Story starts with a rainy night, with a couple trying to get their child out of a house before a cowboy-hat wearing zombie shoots them up. And then it jumps years into the future, when Jesse (Arye Gross) finally...

Twilight Time has released the 1985 cult hit Fright Night as a limited edition (3,000 unit) Blu-ray. The film, written and directed by Tom Holland, has gained a devoted following over the years, and for good reason. The film is primarily played for laughs, but Holland refrains from going over the top into outright spoof by providing at least a few scenes that have a genuinely chilling element to them. Charley Brewster (well played by William Ragsdale) is a well-adjusted high school student. His suburban lifestyle with his single mother is comfortable and relatively carefree, with his main problem being his unsuccessful attempts to relieve his girlfriend Amy (Amanda Bearse) of her virginity. Life as he knows it ends when he notices a coffin being brought into the empty house next door in the dead of night. Turns out the new neighbor is Jerry Dandridge (Chris Sarandon), a handsome,...

Contagion - Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law
Warrior - Tom Hardy, Nick Nolte, Joel Edgerton

Warrior
The Stars: Tom Hardy, Nick Nolte, Joel Edgerton
The Plot: The youngest son (Hardy) of an alcoholic former boxer (Nolte) returns home, where he’s trained by his father for competition in a mixed martial arts tournament — a path that puts the fighter on a collision corner with his older brother (Edgerton).
The Buzz: The world is pretty big, and there are a lot of folks out there busy populating it, so I guess it stands to reason that similar stories would crop up, even if they’re both insanely inspirational in their against-all-odds/too-good-to-be-true essence. I am, of course, nodding to the obvious similarities between last year’s (phenomenal...

If you've ever seen Tom Holland's original Fright Night, then I probably don't need to tell you just how special the characters are in the film because you're already well aware. But for those of you out there who may not be as familiar with Holland's story, allow this writer to indulge a bit in the world of my favorite horror film of all time and take this opportunity to bring you up-to-speed on just what makes Fright Night so special, even after 26 years.
In Fright Night Holland tells us the story of teenager Charley Brewster (William Ragsdale), who discovers his new next-door neighbor, the always charming Jerry Dandridge (Chris Sarandon), is hiding a dark secret: He's really a bloodthirsty vampire who has plans to turn Charley's community into his own personal meal ticket, and I guess you could say he starts off by feasting on the local prostitution population,...

As a child of the 80s, to me there were two distinctive kinds of horror movies: the kind you watched if you really wanted to scare the crap out of yourself (A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Thing) and the kind that you enjoyed because they treaded on the lighter side of genre fare (The Monster Squad, Ghostbusters, Gremlins), and Fright Night definitely fell into the latter category, making it an almost instant classic for myself and worldwide fans alike when it hit VHS shelves everywhere in late spring 1986.
Even though most of us adore Fright Night for being the best vampire movie of the entire 1980s, what I've always thought made it even more entertaining than your average vampire film of that time was that the movie also had some incredible characters as well as a look and feel that demonstrated writer/director Tom Holland...

This is a reader’s (he called himself Charley Brewsterrr) review from a test screening that took place in Orange, California.
I can just see it now, studio execs walking into video stores and combing the aisles looking for something to remake without any care in the world. It is a safe gamble to re-imagine something that was successful before because if it doesn’t gel, it is an out because it worked before and they can push blame elsewhere. God forbid someone takes a chance on an original script as opposed to worrying about losing their cushy job. Don’t get me wrong brother, I am not a hater when it comes to redoing a story. From wave one remakes like The Thing and The Fly, to more creative bankrupt outings like Dawn of the Dead and The Ring – all I want is a good movie, and those four titles delivered.

Nickelodeon has picked up new comedy series Bucket & Skinner’s Epic Adventures, a multi-camera buddy comedy about two best friends. It hails from comedy veteran Tom Lynch (The Troop), who is executive producing alongside creators Boyce Bugliari and Jamie McLaughlin (Quintuplets) and Jonathan Stark (According to Jim) through The Tom Lynch Co. The series begins production this month in Los Angeles for a February 2011 launch. Bucket & Skinner’s Epic Adventures is one of five new series joining Nickelodeon's line-up in early 2011, along with Power Rangers Samurai; House of Anubis, a comedy-mystery series adapted from the international TV format; Bubble Guppies, a new interactive CG-animated preschool series; and Supah Ninjas, a comic book-style action comedy series. In Supah Ninjas news, comedy veterans Mitchel Katlin and Nat Bernstein have been tapped as executive producers/showrunners. They are with UTA and Inphenate. Meanwhile, Oxygen has put in development Best Ink, a competition reality series for tattoo artists.

Thanks (or rather no thanks) to Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series (books and films), brooding, pale-skinned, sparkly, fangless, vegan vampires are at their most popular, but not that long ago vampires in fiction and film were portrayed as bloodthirsty, humans were prey (with the occasional exception), not as potential romantic partners, so, in the spirit of nostalgia, let's take a cinematic trip back to 1985 and Fright Night, a horror-comedy starring the late, great Roddy McDowell (Dead of Winter, the Planet of the Apes series, The Poseidon Adventure, Cleopatra) in one of his better roles and Chris Sarandon as an old-school, if sadly fashion-challenged, bloodsucker. Made four years before James Cameron mixed CG with live-action in The Abyss, and thus reliant on practical effects for the transformation scenes and the occasional matte shot for extending backgrounds, Fright Night remains cheesy, campy fun, equally entertaining for discerning and non-discerning horror fans.

Casting news for the new Fright Night first arrived back in April with the announcement of Anton Yelchin's involvement and just a little under three months later, the roster is almost complete. Yelchin leads as Charley Brewster, a kid who finds himself in some serious trouble when a vampire moves in next door. The role of Jerry Dandridge, our local bloodsucker, went to Colin Farrell. He'll have a major influence on Toni Collette who plays Charley's mother and Christopher Mintz-Plasse who's on board to play Evil Ed, Charley's best pal. When neither believes his accusation, Charley turns to a Las Vegas showman with a thing for horror movies for some help, David Tennant as Peter Vincent. Lastly we have our most recent addition, Imgoen Poots as Charley's girlfriend, Amy.
So now that leaves us with one role yet to be cast, that of Jerry's day watcher Billy Cole. Clearly...

With talk of a Fright Night remake being tossed around DreamWorks, horror fans have been more than a little intrigued. I certainly approved of Anton Yelchin in the role of a kid who discovers that his next-door neighbor is actually a horrible vampire ... but who would they get to play said vampire? In Tom Holland's 1985 original, it was Chris Sarandon. In Craig Gillespie's remake, it will be Colin Farrell. Not a bad choice! As the Heat Vision blog points, out, Farrell has been doing mainly indie work recently (like Crazy Heart and Ondine), so this looks to be a fun way for the man to make a fresh splash in a Hollywood flick.
Toni Collette has also been added to the cast as the nosey kid's mom (previously played by Dorothy Fielding), which is great because Toni Collette is all sorts of awesome -- but there are still...
