Jury Duty actor Rashida “Sheedz” Olayiwola is taking on a different kind of duty for this weekend’s BET Awards, where she serves as head writer.
Olayiwola was hired in recent months, and been working with a team to craft jokes for the show after spending two years as a staff writer for the awards, under producer Jesse Collins Entertainment. She is the second Black woman in the show’s history to hold the head writer position, following Nefetari Spencer in 2021.
Olayiwola was among the breakout stars of Jury Duty, in which she played officer Nikki Wilder, the bailiff in a fake trial in which everyone was an actor (save for an unsuspecting jury member named Ronald Gladden). She and her cast earned an Independent Spirit Award for the show. Olayiwola also has a role in Marvel Studios’ upcoming streaming series Ironheart. As a writer, she has worked on HBO’s South Side,...

This one has to be better, right? It will be the first Oscars under Academy CEO Bill Kramer, who took the role in July 2022 after running the Academy Museum. After last year’s incendiary ceremony produced by Will Packer, which featured an ungainly trio of hosts, capped by the slap, Kramer had a new mantra: Make the show classy, fun, and celebratory of the movies. And sure enough, that’s exactly what the producers Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner say, too.
Here’s the thing: For the first time since the era of Gil Cates, who produced the Academy Awards 14 times between 1990 and 2008 with hosts Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, David Letterman, Steve Martin, Chris Rock, and Jon Stewart, we have an Oscar producer with extensive Oscar telecast experience.
Three-time Primetime Emmy winner Weiss (the guy who proposed to his wife live on the Emmys) directed the show seven times; this will be his eighth.

Reasonable Doubt begins in outrageously dramatic fashion, with protagonist Jax Stewart (Emayatzy Corinealdi) tied to a chair and pleading for her life at the barrel of a gun. The episode that follows continues along a similarly soapy vein: After rewinding six months, the show introduces a trio of love interests for Jax to play with and a splashy murder to untangle, setting us up for a season of steamy trysts and rug-pulling reveals.
But anyone who’s suffered through a mediocre thriller knows that bombshell twists alone aren’t enough to hook an audience if the people onscreen otherwise fall flat. Thankfully, Reasonable Doubt — which was created by Scandal vet Raamla Mohamed and boasts a premiere directed by Scandal star Kerry Washington — fares better than plenty of other would-be watercooler shows in that regard, grounding its drama in enjoyable characters, believable relationships and no shortage of platonic and sexual chemistry.

SAG Awards Announces 2022 Production Team, Led by Executive Producers Jon Brockett and Kathy Connell
Jon Brockett has been tapped to serve as executive producer of the Screen Actors Guild Awards this year, joining returning EP Kathy Connell at the helm. Brockett had previously served as a producer on the show, and has been a part of the SAG Awards since its fifth show, while Connell has been with the ceremony since it began in 1995.
Brockett and Connell are a part of this year’s production team, which the SAG Awards announced on Thursday. Not returning are Hazy Mills Productions’ Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner, who served as EPs with Connell of the in-person 2019 and 2020 events, as well as last year’s pre-taped virtual special.
For 2022, as previously reported, the SAG Awards are shaking things up by moving venues, to Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar. There’s still no word yet on whether there will be a host for the show, which will air on Feb.

‘South Side’ Review: Chicago-Set Comedy Returns for a Season 2 with Dreams Even Bigger than the City
The season finale of the first season of “South Side” closed with a few friends in a basement, floating away into deep space. It would have been a bittersweet ending for the then-Comedy Central show if it had stopped there, a parting reminder of how big this collection of mismatched employees could go. Fortunately, after a two year hiatus, “South Side” is back — this time as an HBO Max original — and it’s not afraid to keep going galactic whenever it decides to.
Most of “South Side” still revolves around the employees of “Rent-t-Own,” a store that loans out everything from end tables to TVs to household appliances. In their downtime at work, Simon (Sultan Salahuddin) and Kareme (Kareme Young) are usually deep into some plan that will be their ticket to a new job, better conditions at their current one, or (as is the case with the show...

"There's always something in this life you didn't do." Gravitas Ventures has unveiled an official trailer for an indie drama titled Good, the second feature film made by up-and-coming filmmaker Justin Etheredge. This initially premiered last year at the Austin Film Festival and is arriving on VOD starting in September this year. Payton becomes the caretaker of Gregory Devereaux, a wealthy man facing his final months. As they become close, Gregory's past sins force Payton to decide between his dreams and a surprise pregnancy that could squander them all. Justin Etheredge stars as Payton, with the one-and-only Keith David as Gregory, and a small supporting cast including Nefetari Spencer, Kali Raquel, Christen Sharice, and Sarah-Scott Davis. I haven't heard about this film before this trailer today, but I'm very much interested after getting a look at the footage. I'm also really digging Keith David's epic beard in this. It is worth a look.

Spencer is no stranger to working with major comedy talent, beginning her career as the late Bernie Mac’s assistant and since then having written material for Craig Robinson, Leslie Jones, Tracee Ellis Ross, Regina Hall, Niecy ...

We've talked this issue to death already, committing about half-a-dozen posts to the issue over the last month or so (read Here & Here to start), so I'll say no more. In the comments section of some of those posts, questions came up, asking how the show's producers go about casting for it. So, this time around, I thought I'd highlight a piece published last week on Salon.com, which I only just learned about, titled "What it’s like to audition for “SNL” as a black woman." In the piece, comedian Nefetari Spencer talks to Salon about the SNL auditioning process that she went through, as well as the ongoing diversity controversy that's kept the show in the...

Ladies, what are the qualities of your ideal man? Is he smart, well-spoken, and courageous? Does he hold a high-paying job? If you answered yes to these questions, you feel similarly to Nefetari Spencer, the lead actress in Finding My Obama, a new web series about meeting an idealistic man who--like the President--possesses the above qualities. Finding My Obama is the brainchild of Antonia March and Jacqueline McKinley, two TV sitcom writers who clearly have had plenty of disappointment relationships with men. In each episode, Spencer (playing a fictionalize version of herself) comes into contact with a new selection of dudes, each one with his own set of unique problems. Some guys are too curt, others are too meek, and at least one is flat-out homeless. Five episodes have been released so far on the show's YouTube channel. As of the most recent episode, which has reached five-digit views, the...

Wait..don't roll your eyes. I know what you're saying.... "Oh God not Another web series!" True. It seems that there are too many of them and they're all beginning to look alike. I understand. I really do. I admit I'm becoming weary (and wary) of them too. And yet I think this new one just might have some potential if the creators of the show can keep up the creativity of the series. It's called Finding My Obama and deals with a single young African American woman (played by Nefetari Spencer) who's tired of all the games and losers she's been dealing with and sets out to find a man of substance. The series was...
