The best Christmas episodes from great TV shows are typically full of joy and feature heartwarming storylines, but sometimes, there is a character who spoils all the fun for everybody else. These characters typically voice their hatred of the festive season at any given opportunity, but some simply demonstrate it through their actions and dialogue.

AMC’s Gangs of London are back in action: UK broadcaster Sky has released a teaser trailer for Season 3 of the high-octane crime drama, which airs on AMC here in the United States.

The annual Through Her Lens: The Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program has officially announced its 2024 grant recipients. The star-studded three-day workshop is a coveted experience for selected female filmmakers, and has served as a launchpad for filmmakers such as Nikyatu Jusu (“Nanny”), Kat Coiro (“She-Hulk”), and A.V. Rockwell (“A Thousand and One”).

Olivia Wilde and Beanie Feldstein had a mini “Booksmart” reunion Tuesday at Chanel and Tribeca Film Festival’s Through Her Lens luncheon in New York City.

Wilde and Feldstein are jurors for this year’s Tribeca Chanel women’s filmmaker program, which provides industry support and artistic development to 10 self-identifying women and non-binary filmmakers. The jury will decide which of these emerging filmmakers will receive full funding and support from Tribeca Studios to create a short film.

“I’m thrilled that I get to be on this jury with Beanie and to deliberate together because her taste is unmatched,” Wilde told Variety on the carpet for the Through Her Lens luncheon at Locanda Verde, the Italian restaurant in Tribeca. “She is so empathetic in the way she consumes materials with such thoughtful, emotional intelligence. Dennis Quaid, currently starring in Reagan, The Piano Lesson star Stephan James, Jai Courtney, and Esai Morales have been enlisted into War Machine, a sci-fi action movie that Patrick Hughes (The Man from Toronto) is directing for Netflix.

Also on the call sheet are Blake Richardson (Mystery Road), Keiynan Lonsdale (The Flash), and Daniel Webber (The Dirt).

The feature begins shooting in Australia this week and is being produced by Todd Lieberman and Alex Young of Hidden Pictures as well as Hughes via his banner, Huge Film.

The script, written by Hughes and James Beaufort, is set during the final 24 hours of the world’s toughest selection process and sees a team of Army Rangers encountering a threat beyond their imagination.

The program includes a three-day immersive workshop with one-on-one mentorship and intimate conversations focused on script-to-screen development, music composition, costume design, producing and directing.

Five pairs of writer-directors and producers will participate in the program and pitch their short films to the jurors. Hulu announced on Tuesday that Human Magic, a new stand-up special from Ilana Glazer, is set to premiere on the streamer on December 20, launching on Disney+ internationally.

The special marks Glazer’s second on the heels of The Planet Is Burning, which premiered on Prime Video in early 2020. She taped it at the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre in Toronto in early May, after touring the hour in every corner of the country, playing 52 shows across 48 cities in the U.S. and Canada.

Jeff Tomsic directed the special, with Rotten Science and Glazer’s Starrpix producing.

Pregnancy is a juicy topic for filmmakers. You can play it for laughs, mine it for horror or simply showcase what an unbelievable process it is to grow a real human being inside you. Like pregnancy, motherhood is another popular subject for storytellers, as is friendship.

Broad City’s Ilana Glazer and stand-up Michelle Buteau play two best friends going through pregnancy in this raunchy comedy from actor-turned-director Pamela Adlon. Crackling with comic chemistry, it’s frequently very funny and pulls off what is essentially a clever riff on the usual rom-com dynamic, but it oddly shies away from its potentially emotional moments, preferring to undercut them with laughs instead.

The film is set in present-day New York, where two best friends – single yoga instructor Eden (Glazer) and married-with-a-kid dentist Dawn (Buteau) – still get together regularly, despite now living in different boroughs that are several subway trains apart. As the film begins, they’re indulging in their annual Thanksgiving ritual of attending a movie together, but that’s cut short when heavily...

Given that pregnancy is quite literally a matter of life and death, it’s striking how few films address it. Blame the ickiness perhaps, or more likely the fact that it’s seen as a women’s issue, but Hollywood considers something that 40 per cent-odd of the population experiences and 100 per cent of the population owes their lives to a little bit less important than zombies. John Carroll Lynch is officially set to join Prime Video’s untitled Renée Ballard series, the second spin-off of Amazon MGM’s Prime Video series “Bosch.” The 10-episode project will follow Detective Renée Ballard as she takes charge of the LAPD’s new cold case division.

Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to “The World According to Allee Wilis,” a new documentary about the musical powerhouse best known for writing the “Friends” theme song and Earth Wind & Fire’s “September.”

The film, which is directed by Alexis Spraic, had its world premiere at SXSW and has been hitting the festival circuit. It most recently screened at the Provincetown Film Festival, and will next be showcased at Frameline.
