One of the most strangely specific sitcom tropes is the unseen character. These range from Niles Crane's (David Hyde Pierce) increasingly physically impossible wife Maris on "Frasier" to gentler takes on the subject, like Wilson (Earl Hindman) on "Home Improvement."
"The Big Bang Theory" is no exception to the all-permeating presence of the trope, courtesy of Howard Wolowitz's (Simon Helberg) unseen but very much heard mother, Debbie Wolowitz. An abrasive and imposing presence in Howard's life, Mrs. Wolowitz is nevertheless a force of good and an important figure to both him and most of the show's other main characters.
Since the character is, for all intents and purposes, just a voice on "The Big Bang Theory," fans may have noticed a marked difference in how she sounds on "Young Sheldon." This isn't because the actor who voices Mrs. Wolowitz on "The Big Bang Theory," Carol Ann Susi, was told to...

There are plenty of TV show characters who prove themselves to be absolute Grinches, as in characters who don't like Christmas at all even if they technically observe it. The best Christmas episodes from great TV shows are typically full of joy and feature heartwarming storylines, but sometimes, there is a character who spoils all the fun for everybody else. These characters typically voice their hatred of the festive season at any given opportunity, but some simply demonstrate it through their actions and dialogue.
A lot of Christmas TV episodes that are surprisingly dark focus on why a character may struggle with the occasion, although this doesn’t always justify their behavior. Regardless of the characters' religious beliefs or upbringing, holiday episodes in TV shows usually see characters coming together for celebrations. However, some "Grinches" in TV shows simply don’t enjoy Christmas.

An indispensable aspect of popular culture that has produced some of the best shows of all time, sitcoms number among the most widely watched and influential forms of television out there. Featuring beloved and long-running names like The Office, Peep Show, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the best sitcoms of all time chronicle a diverse array of stories from all walks of life, continuously evolving and highlighting that there is no set formula for a show to become wildly successful.
However, for every superb sitcom that deserves every bit of the praise that it receives, there's at least one counterpart that leaves viewers scratching their heads as to how the show even got off the ground in the first place. Whether the sitcom played out as an insufferable mess from its very first scene, or steadily fell off in terms of quality and innovation as the show progressed,...

Mikey Madison is getting a lot of Oscar buzz for her powerful lead performance in Anora, but she got her first big break playing Max in Pamela Adlons underappreciated dramedy series Better Things. Madison is one of Hollywoods most promising rising stars right now; Anora is the latest of many high-profile roles shes played in recent years. In 2019, she played notorious Manson Family member Susan Atkins in Quentin Tarantinos 60s-set epic Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and in 2022, she played a new incarnation of Ghostface, Amber Freeman, in Scream.
Anora has made Madison a bigger star than ever. Sean Bakers darkly comedic tale of an exotic dancer who impulsively marries a Russian oligarchs immature son is tipped to be a major contender come awards season. Its expected to land a Best Picture nomination, a Best Director nomination for Baker, and a Best Actress nomination for Madison. Madison gives one...

Sean Baker sees the world differently. He found a magic kingdom in the pastel purple of The Florida Project’s multi-storey inn. Made a washed-up porn star an avatar for the American Dream in Red Rocket. Set Tangerine’s frenzied tale of a transgender woman’s revenge against the glittering backdrop of Christmas Eve. And now in Anora, his Palme d’Or-winning odyssey, turns Take That’s ‘Greatest Day’ — a song largely adored by a mum demographic — into a sex-worker anthem.
It makes for one hell of an opening sequence: Gary Barlow and co’s hopeful lyrics about shared vitality (remixed to a club beat) scoring a line-up of athletic strippers, their customers barely visible beneath them. “Watch the world come alive tonight… Stay close to me.” At the end of the undulating chorus line twirls Mikey Madison’s Ani (short for Anora), smiling serenely, long, dark hair cascading around her,...

Fifteen years after what used to be the King of the Hill series finale, Bobby Hill has turned his savant-like knowledge of all things food into a career — but don’t tell Hank about the soot under his son’s fingernails.
When King of the Hill co-creator Greg Daniels announced that he and his creative partner Mike Judge decided to implement a nine-year time jump in the upcoming Hulu reboot of their Texas-sized slice-of-life sitcom, fans had innumerable questions about how this would change the King of the Hill canon. After all, Arlen spent 12 years and 13 seasons frozen in the floating timeline, so a jump-cut to the current day when Hank and Peggy have gray hair and Bobby is a post-pubescent professional chef is going to be a major adjustment for a fandom that expected Bobby to be a 12-year-old meat inspection prodigy forever.

Mikey Madison has come bearing snacks. I first discovered After Midnight (1989) during my freshman year of college. There at I Luv Video was this VHS tape that gave me nostalgia for a movie I actually hadn’t seen yet. The woman on the cover, a character played by Jillian McWhirter, was quite literally trapped in time, and the tagline beneath her fiery fate read: “Anything Can Happen in the Dark.” As it turned out, my little case of memory distortion was rather fitting; this movie starts off with someone having a vague recollection, albeit of a terrible event.
Growing up I had passed by After Midnight many times at my local video shop, but it wasn’t until some years later that I gave it a watch. And after witnessing the nightmarish fate of those college students enrolled in The Psychology of Fear, I was hooked. Jim and Ken Wheat’s movie — their horror debut as...

King of the Hill is a big hit in Japan, but its localization in the Land of the Rising Sun has its controversies — and not just because of everything Cotton said about and did to “the Tojos.”
American nerds, cinephiles and animation enthusiasts have long fawned over the many amazing cultural exports from Japan. From samurai movies to sushi, everything that Americans consider stereotypically Japanese has a huge fan base over in the States, but in today’s America, perhaps no corner of Japanese culture is more popular than imported anime and manga. And within the American anime community, there is one enduring debate in which no single Naruto, One Piece or Berserk fan is on the fence — the war between watching these anime with English subtitles with original Japanese audio versus an English dub that erases the work of the original voice actors.

The series was the surprise hit of the 2024 TV season, and it sees Carrie Preston reprising her Emmy-winning role as Elsbeth Tascioni, the wildly eccentric attorney from The Good Wife and The Good Fight. Now in New York City to aid the NYPD, Elsbeth soon gets involved in murder investigations where her quirky mind lets her figure out clues.
Season 1 had the overall arc that Elsbeth had been secretly sent to investigate Captain Wagner (Wendell Pierce) for possible corruption. It turned out Wagner was innocent, and it was his supposed friend who was using his name to commit crimes. The captain wasn't happy about this and briefly wanted Elsbeth gone.
However, Wagner realized Elsbeth was helpful in cases and let her stay as a police consultant. He also...

The only thing celebrities love more than reminding normies that they’re our superiors is convincing us that they really know how to laugh at themselves. Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau star in Pamela Adlon’s exploration of motherhood and friendship. Here’s our Babes review.
Pregnancy is a juicy topic for filmmakers. You can play it for laughs, mine it for horror or simply showcase what an unbelievable process it is to grow a real human being inside you. Like pregnancy, motherhood is another popular subject for storytellers, as is friendship.
Trying to mesh all of these themes together in one film is Pamela Adlon, a first-time feature filmmaker and actress known as the voice of Bobby Hill in King Of The Hill. Babes is part comedy, part drama about the difficulties of maintaining a friendship through motherhood and pregnancy.

Broad City’s Ilana Glazer and stand-up Michelle Buteau play two best friends going through pregnancy in this raunchy comedy from actor-turned-director Pamela Adlon. Crackling with comic chemistry, it’s frequently very funny and pulls off what is essentially a clever riff on the usual rom-com dynamic, but it oddly shies away from its potentially emotional moments, preferring to undercut them with laughs instead.
The film is set in present-day New York, where two best friends – single yoga instructor Eden (Glazer) and married-with-a-kid dentist Dawn (Buteau) – still get together regularly, despite now living in different boroughs that are several subway trains apart. As the film begins, they’re indulging in their annual Thanksgiving ritual of attending a movie together, but that’s cut short when heavily...

Given that pregnancy is quite literally a matter of life and death, it’s striking how few films address it. Blame the ickiness perhaps, or more likely the fact that it’s seen as a women’s issue, but Hollywood considers something that 40 per cent-odd of the population experiences and 100 per cent of the population owes their lives to a little bit less important than zombies. So one would like to cheer this effort from actor/comedian-turned-director Pamela Adlon, except that it’s inconsistent in its tone and fatally lacking in humour.

32 Sounds (Sam Green)
Filmmaker Sam Green captures something so specific here: he makes audio the star of a motion picture. It’s a lovely inclination and a worthwhile escapade. There are funny moments, clever moments, plenty that are heartfelt. Sound can do so many different things! This is an exceedingly well-produced work, its perfect length and the audible narrative it designs building succinctly to a lovely finale. Toss on those headphones and get lost in 32 Sounds for a while. – Dan M.
Where to Stream: The Criterion Channel
Babes (Pamela Adlon)

We’ve talked a lot about what makes a black sheep a black sheep. It can be a number of things really. We look at horror series and see what the underappreciated or even outright hated ones are to lift them up and defend them. It can also be a relatively underseen or unknown entity in the career of an actor, director, or series of films to shine a light and get it on more radars. It’s a mostly underseen and unknown movie in a short horror series that is not really loved by the people who have seen it. With the first movie in the series being a spooky kids classic,...

The Atx TV Festival, founded by TV superfans Emily Gipson and Caitlin McFarland and held annually in Austin, is an intimate, enlightening, taco-adjacent celebration of all things small screen. Each year brings an eclectic mix of panels, some focused on individual series (both new and old), some on industry-wide themes, some on minutiae micro-targeted to the kind of person who would attend a four-day festival just about television.
At this year’s fest, the 13th installment, the main event was a tribute to the late, great Norman Lear, with actors like Pamela Adlon,...
