The show starts at 8pm UK time, finishing at approximately 10pm.

UK actor Hayley Atwell will preside over the main jury for the 2022 British Independent Film Awards (Bifa).

Joining Atwell are fellow actors Daniel Kaluuya, Jenna Coleman, Kosar Ali, Ray Panthaki, Joanna Scanlan and Kiell Smith-Bynoe.

Boiling Point director and recent Big Screen winner Philip Barantini will also sit on the jury alongside The Souvenir producer Luke Schiller, filmmaker Sadie Frost and presenter Leila Latif.

Two of the new categories, Breakthrough British Filmmaker and Actor, include the likes of Reggie Yates, Bella Ramsey, Honor Swinton Byrne and Jim Archer.

Kenneth Branagh’s autobiographical drama Belfast and Philip Barantini’s single-take title Boiling Point both lead nominations for this year’s British Independent Film Awards with 11 nods a piece.

Belfast, which chronicles the tale of life as a young boy in the city in 1969 in the midst of the Troubles, earned a Best Actress nom for Caitríona Balfe, Best Supporting Actress nom for Judi Dench, Best Supporting Actor for Ciarán Hinds and a Breakthrough Performance nomination for newcomer Jude Hill. The title, which is being released in the U.S. by Focus Features on November 12, also earned seven craft nominations including Best Casting and Best Cinematography.

Boiling Point, which follows an up-and-coming chef under extreme pressure, scored a Best Actor nom for Stephen Graham, Best Supporting Actor for Ray Panthaki, Best Supporting Actress for Vinette Robinson and a Breakthrough Performance nomination for Lauryn Ajufo as well as a Breakthrough Producer nomination.

Ahead of a ceremony on November 29, this year’s Gotham Awards nominations have been unveiled, featuring some of the year’s finest cinema. Among the nominations are some personal favorites here at The Film Stage, including Drive My Car, Faya Dayi, The Worst Person in the World (a film that still doesn’t have an actual 2021 U.S. release date), Test Pattern, and El Planeta.

This year, the Gothams made a switch to have all performance categories be gender neutral, with those categories have been restructured into Outstanding Leading and Supporting Performance categories for feature films, joining the already existing Breakthrough Performer category.

“The Green Knight,” “The Lost Daughter,” “Passing,” “Pig” and “Test Pattern” will compete for best feature film at the 31st annual Gotham Awards. The event is key stop in the awards season marathon, particularly for lower-budgeted indie fare that is looking to elbow into the Oscars race.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Bafta) has revealed its 2019 intake of new members drawn from the film, TV and games industry.

Last night Old Billingsgate in London played host to the 22nd annual British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs), the yearly celebration of some of the most unique voices in film. It was a pleasure to be on the red carpet and talk to the likes of Asa Butterfield, Sam Adewunmi, Jessie Buckley and Armando Iannucci, and you can find all of our interviews below the list of winners announced on the night.

The phenomenal documentary For Sama won four awards including Best British Independent Film, while Armando Iannucci’s festival favourite The Personal History of David Copperfield took home five. For Sama and The Personal History Of David Copperfield were the big winners at the 2019 British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs).

The ceremony was hosted by actress and comedian Aisling Bea and held at London’s Old Billingsgate tonight (Dec 1).

Syrian civil war documentary For Sama scooped the night’s top prize, best British independent film, as well as best director for Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts, best documentary, and best editing at the previously announced craft awards last month.

Peter Strickland’s In Fabric has nine and Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir, which is up for best film, has eight.

Judy missed out on best film but did take a nom for star Renee Zellweger and has five in total.

The best film category is completed by Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts’ Syria doc For Sama, and Mark Jenkin’s micro-budget Bait, which has been a surprise box office hit in the UK, grossing $520k.

Armando Iannucci’s Charles Dickens adaptation The Personal History Of David Copperfield leads the nominations for the 21st British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs), which were revealed today (October 30).

Iannucci’s third feature scored 11 nominations, including one for himself – a best screenplay nod alongside co-writer Simon Blackwell. It also picked up three nominations in the acting categories – best actor for Dev Patel, best supporting actress for Tilda Swinton, and best supporting actor for Hugh Laurie.

The nominees for Screen International’s 2019 Best British Film of the Year award have been revealed.

The winner will be voted for by Screen International readers (see below) and will be announced at this year’s Screen Awards ceremony held on November 28 at The Ballroom Southbank in London. Voting closes on October 31. This year’s other Screen Awards nominees have been announced here.

Cannes–Variety honored its 10 Producers to Watch for 2019 at a brunch on Monday morning at Cannes’ Plage des Palmes.

Launched at the Cannes Film Festival in 1998, the annual event fetes 10 producers from the U.S. and the international film community who share a common commitment to bold, original, provocative storytelling.

The films produced by this year’s honorees have premiered on the Croisette and made waves in Sundance and Berlin, tackling challenging themes while offering a platform for diverse cinematic voices. Collectively they represent a dynamic community that is going to “regenerate, rejuvenate, revitalize cinema moving forward,” said Variety’s executive VP of content Steven Gaydos.

Katriel Schory, who is stepping down from the Israel Film Fund, was also honored with Variety’s Creative Impact Award. Under Schory’s stewardship of the fund, more than 300 feature-length films were produced in Israel, while the domestic audience grew from 100,000 to 1.5 million admissions per year.

The specialty box office is still in the doldrums as summer approaches, save for some breakouts. Showing some zest this weekend was Sundance’s The Souvenir from filmmaker Joanna Hogg, taking the weekend’s highest per theater average at $21,463. The A24 title starring newcomer Honor Swinton Byrne as well as her real-life mother Tilda Swinton (who plays her mother in the feature) and Tom Burke grossed $85,851 in four theaters.

“The film played to younger and older audiences in both markets this weekend with critics championing Honor Swinton Byrne’s heartbreaking and star-making performance in an expertly crafted romantic drama as one of the best of the year,” touted A24 Sunday.

How the film continues in the box office remains to be seen, but there’s already a sequel on the docket. “It’s a sign of confidence from investors in the project,” said The Souvenir producer Luke Schiller earlier this week.

Focus Features has swooped for the rest of the world on Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir, the first part of which was an award winner at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Focus has taken global rights excluding North America (A24), UK (Curzon) and Taiwan (Spotlight) from sales agent Protagonist Pictures to both parts one and two of the project. The deal has been in the works since Sundance.

Curzon picks up film following Sundance premiere.

Curzon has bought UK and Ireland rights to Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir from Protagonist PIctures following its well-received premiered at Sundance.

The deal furthers the relationship between Hogg and UK distributor/exhibitor Curzon, with the latter having released two of the director’s previous films: Exhibition and Archipelago.

Curzon will release the film day-and-date in cinemas and on its PVoD platform Curzon Home Cinema, as it does with all its releases.

“[We are ]confident The Souvenir will open Joanna Hogg up to the wider audience she richly deserves,” said Louisa Dent, managing director of Curzon Artificial Eye.

Exclusive: After A24 last month acquired the Sundance-bound film The Souvenir, the distributor has closed a North American rights deal for director Joanna Hogg’s sequel, The Souvenir – Part 2. A24 unveils the first film with its world premiere Sunday here at Sundance, before the film plays in the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival in February.

For A24, it’s another case of backing filmmakers as they commit to a sequel before the first one is seen by an audience. Production on The Souvenir – Part 2 will take place this summer, with Hogg writing and directing. Reprising their roles from the first film are Honor Swinton Byrne, Tilda Swinton, Ariane Labed, and Richard Ayoade. Robert Pattinson is in talks to join the sequel. He isn’t in the first film.
