The 48-year-old Oscar-winning actress joined co-stars Andy Samberg and Andrea Riseborough at a screening of their new movie Lee on Wednesday evening (Sept. 25) held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Also in attendance was director Ellen Kuras and Andrea‘s longtime boyfriend Karim Saleh.

In the movie, Kate plays famed photographer Lee Miller. The story “portrays a pivotal decade in the life of American war correspondent and photographer, Lee Miller. Vanity Fair’s annual Oscar party took place Sunday at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills. I have all the details from inside the event, which as usual attracted the most elite of the Hollywood set who poured in after watching Everything Everywhere All at Once score seven Oscar trophies including Best Picture.

We managed to get our hands on the guest list for the event, held in a 3,000-square-foot indoor reception area, with additional courtyards and other outdoor lounge spaces. The main bar, a prime gathering spot, was 40 feet long. The guests danced into the early-morning hours.

The Champagne carpet officially rolled out at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood for the 95th Academy Awards, kicking off the final stretch of Oscar pre-parties and events as Hollywood gears up for March 12.

The food, beverages and décor of this year’s Governors Ball, the Academy’s official post-Oscars celebration, was revealed Tuesday at a press conference by Wolfgang Puck, who crafted this year’s menu with Eric Klein, VP of culinary at Wolfgang Puck Catering.

Nominees, winners and guests will be treated to a variety of tray-passed dishes, created by 120 chefs in the kitchen, from smoked salmon Oscars matzah and Wp signature pizzas to crispy Moroccan lamb cigars.

One of the wildest, campiest, least apologetic films of the 2022 festival season is “Please Baby Please.” Amanda Kramer’s 1950s-set LGBT musical thriller tells the story of a straight-passing married couple who begin questioning their conceptions of gender, sexuality, and monogamy after witnessing a murder and becoming involved with a greaser gang known as the Young Gents. Perhaps it was a bit of method acting.

Over the course of the three-and-a-half weeks spent shooting “Luxor” in Egypt, Andrea Riseborough fell in love with her co-star Karim Saleh, who played the former boyfriend of her character, an aid worker named Hana.

“Perhaps we did our jobs a little too well,” says Riseborough. “It’s very rare for a couple to have forever immortalized on the silver screen their meeting. It was two weeks of connection. It’s something that we’ll always treasure. It was totally unexpected.”

“Luxor,” which is now available on demand and on streaming, follows Hana as she returns to Egypt after two decades away. She’s been traumatized by the brutality she’s witnessed as a surgeon tending to the victims of the Syrian Civil War. It’s Saleh’s character, Sultan, who helps her grapple with the emotional scars left from her work.

Pretentious is never a word you want associated with your film. It has a connotation that just never serves your project well, in the least. Unfortunately, Luxor, despite some strong visuals and a nice central performance, can’t help but give off that vibe. It’s palpable throughout a picture that wants to be hypnotic, but instead mostly winds up being frustrating. Now, that doesn’t make this a bad movie, but it’s one that’s too hit or miss, at least for me, to recommend. I’m in the minority when it comes to this flick, so keep that in mind, but when it opens this week, I’ll be one of the few not quite able to sing its praises… The movie is a drama, mixed with a little romance. Zeina Durra's second feature slow-burning and elliptical consideration of the battered emotional landscape of a medic who is taking time out in the Egyptian city between work on the Syrian Border and a potential new posting in Yemen.

Hana (Andrea Riseborough) seems small in the face of her life - her clothes are so big they consume her and, at every opportunity, her body language seems to fold in on itself with origami neatness. This isn't trauma that is talked about but it's present in almost every move she makes, especially after she re-encounters her ex Sultan (Karim Saleh) by chance, his immediate understanding of where she is at emotionally seeming to kick in like a muscle memory.

And memory itself has a key role to play here. "I don't remember much these days," says Hana, but there's just as much of a sense that she is trying to forget a great.

We’re pleased to report that despite the new lockdown measures that will be in effect nationwide, Zeina Durra’s Luxor is still available to watch this weekend, thanks to virtual screenings that will be taking place. To mark the film’s release we had the pleasure of speaking to the supporting lead Karim Saleh, who plays the long lost lover to the film’s protagonist, played by Andrea Riseborough.

Andrea Riseborough earned raves for her performance in two films that bowed at Sundance earlier this year, two films that could not be more different. The first, “Possessor,” which was released Friday, stars the English actress as an agent who uses a brain implant to inhabit other people’s bodies. Exclusive: Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired North American rights to Luxor, the Zeina Durra drama starring Andrea Riseborough that played at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Karim Saleh, Michael Landes and Shereen Reda also star in the pic, which will now get a late 2020 release.

Set and filmed in Egypt, the centers on British aid worker Hana (Riseborough), who returns to the ancient city of Luxor and comes across Sultan (Saleh), an archeologist and former lover. As she wanders, haunted by the familiar place, she struggles to reconcile the choices of the past with the uncertainty of the present.

Producers are Mohamed Hefzy via his company Film Clinic, Front Row Filmed Entertainment’s Gianluca Chakra, Film Factory’s Mamdouh Saba and Durra. Paul Webster and Hisham Al Ghanim are executive producers.

The pic, written and directed by Durra in her second feature, premiered in Sundance’s World Cinema Dramatic Competition.

Ten years after Zeina Durra launched her well-regarded debut “The Imperialists Are Still Alive!” at Sundance, the London-born director returns with a mature meditation on the effects of trauma shrewdly incarnated by the always welcome Andrea Riseborough. “Luxor,” set in the eponymous Egyptian city of ancient temples, is a slow-burning, accessibly elliptical story in which a doctor pauses from war-zone duty and returns to a beloved place, looking back at the past, uncertain of the future and searching for meaning in the present. The feel is very much American indie, which suggests moderate art-house potential in the States.

Riseborough’s name will be an essential selling point (CAA is handling domestic rights), given the general lack of traction surrounding movies from the Middle East; it would be nice to think “Luxor” could open more international doors for regional fare, though that’s likely wishful thinking. Clare Dunne and Andrea Riseborough are best known for their acting work, but they’re both more interested in flexing their creative muscles on the other side of the lens.

The duo appeared in a session Monday at Sundance Film Festival’s Cinema Café track moderated by Variety‘s Brent Lang, executive editor of film and media. Both Dunne and Riseborough agreed that, in a perfect world, they would choose behind-the-camera roles rather than acting ones.

UK actress Andrea Riseborough has signed to star in Zeina Durra’s contemporary romance Luxor, which is now shooting against the backdrop of Egypt’s world-famous archaeological site. She co-stars with French-Lebanese actor Karim Saleh, whose credits include TV series Counterpart and Transparent.

Steven Soderbergh will be the 2019 recipient of the Founders Award at the Slamdance Film Festival, the festival announced Tuesday.

His latest film “High Flying Bird” will also receive a sneak preview at the festival taking place in Park City, Utah, between Jan. 25-31. Soderbergh will participate in a live discussion about the film with Slamdance co-founder and president Peter Baxter ahead of the preview.

The Founders Award is given to Slamdance alumnus who continue to represent the Slamdance organization and support the filmmaker community of Slamdance well into their careers. Christopher Nolan won the inaugural award in 2015, and “Avengers” directors Joe and Anthony Russo won the prize in 2018.

Freestyle Digital Media has released an official trailer for an indie psychological thriller titled A Good Dream, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Mahum Jamal, which premiered at a few smaller film festivals last year. The film is a very trippy, fanciful, creative thriller about a girl in her 20s trying to find herself living in New York City. When she suddenly finds herself haunted by a presence, she has trouble distinguishing fiction from reality and falls deeper into a world of her perceptions. Melany Bennett stars as Uma, with a cast including Karim Saleh, Victoria Atkin, and Kayvon Zand. This looks very cool, but I'm not sure how good it will really be - not much buzz around it in any way. Worth a look, especially for the clever animated touches added throughout. See below.

– Bleecker Street has secured U.S. distribution rights to Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s true-life story, “Megan Leavey.” The film is based on the life of Leavey (Kate Mara), a young marine corporal in the K9 unit whose unique discipline and bond with her military combat dog saved many lives during their deployment in Iraq.

Bleecker Street will release the movie on June 9, 2017.

The original feature won the Best Foreign Language film Oscar in 2010. Billy Ray, who wrote the screenplay for The Hunger Games and Captain Phillips, will write and direct the story about a former Mi-5 agent (Ejiofor) on a joint task force with the FBI, who thinks he’s finally found the man who murdered the daughter of his former partner and friend (Roberts). • Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette will star in the relationship drama Miss You Already.

German actress Veronica Ferres (Sans famille, Les Misérables, Schtonk) has joined the cast of Pay the Ghost, the Nicolas Cage supernatural thriller set to start lensing this week in Toronto. German helmer Uli Edel (The Baader Minhof Complex) is helming the pic, about a professor (Cage) who reunites with his estranged wife to track down the vengeful ghost who took their son years ago during a Halloween parade. Ferres will play a fellow professor and mentor to Cage who helps in the parents’ search for their child. The veteran actress has been making her way stateside in films like Adam Resurrected opposite Jeff Goldblum and Willem Dafoe and the upcoming the Toronto title Hector and the Search for Happiness, opposite Simon Pegg. Script is by Dan Kay, based on the short story by novelist Tim Lebbon. Voltage will be selling the film at Tiff. Ferres is repped by Resolution.

I feel a special bond with the Sundance Film Festival. Not because I’ve been there, but because the guy in charge of it this year, John Cooper, shares my name. Because we share this bond, I feel that I’m able to take license in referring to the man as Coop for the rest of this article.

For the annual event held in Park City, Utah from January 21-31, thousands of films are submitted and screened — this year, 3,724 films were viewed by the festival’s ten programmers. I wonder when they slept.

Coop has high hopes for the festival as a whole:

The Sundance Film Festival has unveiled the lineup of films playing in competition from January 21 through January 31, 2010. The early fest typically debuts some of the best films the year has to offer, like 2009’s Precious, (500) Days of Summer, and Moon.

I’m bummed I won’t be in Park City, Utah next month because the lineup looks great, and these are just the films playing in competition. Here’s a few that stood out to me:

The Allen Ginsberg trial film Howl starring James Franco, a documentary by Alex Gibney (a truly great filmmaker) on Jack Abramoff, Mark Ruffalo’s directorial debut Sympathy for Delicious, a doc about Joan Rivers, the directorial debut of “How I Met Your Mother” star Josh Radnor titled Happythankyoumoreplease (I wrote a glowing script review of it here), Hesher with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman, and Blue Valentine starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.

Documentary Competition

“Blue Valentine” – Directed by Derek Cianfrance, written by Cianfrance, Cami Delavigne and Joey Curtis, a portrait of an American marriage that charts the evolution of a relationship over time. With Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams, Mike Vogel, John Doman. “Douchebag” – Directed by Drake Doremus, written by Lindsay Stidham, Doremus, Jonathan Schwartz and Andrew Dickler, in which a man about to be married takes his younger brother on a wild goose chase to find the latter’s fifth-grade girlfriend. Features Dickler, Ben York Jones, Marguerite Moreau, Nicole Vicius, Amy Ferguson, Wendi McClendon-Covey. “The Dry Land” – Directed and written by Ryan Piers Williams, in which a returning U.S. soldier tries to reconcile his experiences overseas with his life in Texas.

Photo: Sundance Today the Sundance Institute announced the films that will be in competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival in both the U.S. and International dramatic and documentary categories. The festival will run from January 21-31 in Park City, Utah. There are a few changes this year as there will be no opening-night picture and the festival will take select festival films to eight cities during as the fest plays out.

Last year notable films such as this year's major Oscar contenders Precious and An Education debuted at Sundance 2009 as did audience and critical favorite (500) Days of Summer.

As for this year's crop I have highlighted a few titles among the list below in red, but I have primarily done so considering the names attached to the pictures not necessarily based on any advanced buzz I've heard around any of the films. Names to look out for include Ryan Gosling,...

The Sundance Film Festival is where some of the great films of the year will get their first viewings, and if you don’t believe me, here’s just some of the great films this year that made their debut at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival: Precious, World’s Greatest Dad, Big Fan, Bronson, Moon and even (500) Days of Summer, which I didn’t care for but made a big splash.

The festival is where buzz starts happening and now Sundance has released the list of which films will be in competition for 2010. Keep in mind that there are plenty of other films which play out of competition and can be just as great. But some of the big names fighting for the crown are the Allen Ginsberg obscenity trial film Howl starring General Hospital’s James Franco, Hesher starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo’s directing debut Sympathy for Delicious,...

And the first announcement is upon us and includes quite a few movies we've already reported on.. What does that include?

The incredible looking Estonian drama The Temptation of St. Tony for which we got the exclusive trailer on a while ago. It's by Veiko Õunpuu who did the incredible Sügisball and I'm greatly looking forward to seeing this.

David Michôd's Australian thriller Animal Kingdom which stars Guy Pearce.
