When Star Trek: The Original Series was brought back as Star Trek: The Animated Series, there were a lot of changes. Walter Koenig was left out of the series, there was a different alien on the bridge besides just Mr. Spock, and the animation was mediocre at best, to name a few. Those changes didn't stop the series from delivering some pretty stand-out episodes like "Yesteryear" when Spock has to go back in time to save his younger self.
The Animated Series aired for twenty-two episodes between September 8, 1973 to October 12, 1974, with those counting as two seasons. And though the ratings were high, the show didn't reach its targeted demographic.
Gene Roddenberry's son, Rod Roddenberry, wasn't too impressed at the idea of the series initially and, according to a quote recorded in The Fifty Year Mission The First 25 Years by Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman, he "dismissed it as nonsense without ever seeing it.

Since 2017, the streaming service Paramount+ (originally called CBS All Access) has debuted the following "Star Trek" shows, all under the watchful eye of executive producer Alex Kurtzman: "Star Trek: Discovery," "Short Treks," "Star Trek: Picard," "Star Trek: Lower Decks," "Star Trek: Prodigy," and "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds." There was even a brief period when all of those shows were in production simultaneously. As of this writing, a TV movie called "Section 31" is due in the early months of 2025, and "Starfleet Academy" is in production. That's more trekking than we had in the 1990s.
Of course, the franchise has scaled back in recent years. All of the above series, save "Strange New Worlds," have come to an end, and it seems that the franchise aims to be a lot more modest going forward.
As the sole survivor, "Strange New Worlds" is one of the better choices to carry the torch for the property.

In a sea of science fiction series that take themselves far too seriously, “Star Trek Lower Decks” has been a sweet and funny balm, a loving parody of the iconic speculative fiction universe that celebrates and pisses on its history in equal measure. Like all good sitcoms, however, “Lower Decks” is coming to an end, and the finale promises to be…maybe, possibly, moderately serious?
The animated series will premiere the finale to its fifth and final season Thursday, December 19, on Paramount+. Although there have been many great works of science fiction throughout history, many people believe that Star Trek is the greatest sci-fi series ever. Even when there is fierce competition, the Trekkies will always manage to explain why their franchise is, without a doubt, the greatest one of them all.
Of course, the franchise keeps expanding and while the main television series are not as popular as some older iterations, several projects are still ongoing or in the works. We also have the ongoing comics and the planned film series revival, which is certainly going to make a lot of fans of the franchise happy.
In light of that, we are happy to confirm that Paramount has just released the first trailer for the upcoming Michelle Yeoh-led movie (which is not going to be a part of the mainstream series that is on its way to being revived) Star Trek: Section 31,...

While no release date is set, the new installment is set to debut in 2025. The series has already been renewed for a fourth season.
The three-minute clip follows the ship outmaneuvering and eventually outpacing enemy combatants. Its release follows an earlier preview shared in late July, alongside the news of Cillian O’Sullivan...

The animated “Star Trek: Lower Decks” premiered a new clip from its forthcoming final season at New York Comic Con, showcasing the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos pursuing its Season 5 mission: closing “space potholes” — and meeting alternate versions of themselves as they cross through one of those subspace rifts.
The comedic yet still in-continuity show set in the wider “Star Trek” universe features the ship’s junior officers working to stop these dimensional breaks from causing problems in the Alpha Quadrant this season. According to an official description, “Pothole duty would be easy for Jr. Officers Mariner, Boimler, Tendi and Rutherford… if they didn’t also have to deal with an Orion war, furious Klingons, diplomatic catastrophes, murder mysteries and scariest of all — their own career aspirations.”
The show teases that Season 5 could feature its lowly crew getting promoted out of the titular lower decks “into strange new Starfleet roles.

William Shatner played the beloved Captain Kirk in the "Star Trek" franchise on and off for nearly 30 years, but he wasn't always comfortable with the role. The shows and films themselves were fine; the issue was that he didn't quite know how to handle the fandom. He was bewildered by all the dressing up and the seemingly-obsessive questions fans asked him; at one point, fans attempted to tear off his clothes as he was walking out of 30 Rockefeller Plaza, and at another point someone tried to shoot him at a fan event in Germany.
Simply put: by 1986, Shatner was getting sick of the Trekkies, so when he hosted "Saturday Night Live" that year he decided to let them have it. He played himself in a sketch at a "Star Trek" convention where he snapped at the fans, telling them, "Get a life!

Star Trek: Voyager’s Ensign Harry S. L. Kim makes a surprise return in the fifth and final season trailer for the Star Trek: Lower Decks animated series from Paramount+.

Paramount+ has debuted the trailer for the fifth and final season of the animated comedy “Star Trek: Lower Decks.” The first two episodes will premiere on Thursday Oct. 24 on the Paramount + streaming service.
The 10-episode season produced by CBS Studios will drop every Thursday from its release date through to Dec. 19.
In this season the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos must close all “space potholes,” which are subspace rifts unleashing chaos into the Alpha Quadrant. This combined with their ongoing diplomatic problems leaves them with a rather full plate as junior officers Mariner, Boimer, Tendui and Rutherford deal with: an Orion war, furious Klingons, diplomatic catastrophes, murder mysteries and their own ambitions.

Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh is absolutely dangerous in the trailer for Olatunde Osunsanmi’s “Star Trek: Section 31.” In a clip shared at Comic-Con on Saturday, Yeoh’s Emperor Philippa Georgiou flaunts her talent for evil — and struggles with becoming something else — as Beyoncé’s “Formation” plays in the background.
“Emperor philippa Georgiou,” Omari Hardwick intones, “you’re a tyrant who murdered her own people by the millions… the past always catches up with you.”
Elsewhere in the trailer, Kacey Rohl explains to Yeoh, “31 is Black Ops division. Spy work. Starfleet is here to make sure no one commits murder” and Sam Richardson admits, “We can’t trust you with our lives, but here we go.”
“Someone’s got to keep it lively… right?” Yeoh asks, feigning innocence.
The clip also gave fans the first look at Miku Martineau as the younger version of Philippa Georgiou.

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2
Star Trek: Prodigy pays tribute to Majel Barrett-Roddenberry with a Vulcan character named Maj'el. Star Trek: Prodigy found a Vulcan way to honor Majel Barrett-Roddenberry. In addition to being the wife of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, Majel Barrett-Roddenberry is known as "the First Lady of Star Trek" due to her involvement with Star Trek as a franchise from its inception and continued influence throughout Star Trek's history. Barrett-Roddenberry appeared as both Number One and Nurse Christine Chapel in Star Trek: The Original Series, and Ambassador Lwaxana Troi in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. From Tos to J.J. Abrams' Star Trek (2009), most Starfleet computers sported Barrett-Roddenberry's voice.

In the "Star Trek" episode "The Devil in the Dark", Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) visit a remote mining colony on the planet Janus VI to address an uptick in miner deaths. There is a mysterious creature burrowing through the rocks in the tunnels below and attacking people. The creature extrudes a powerful acid, allowing it to tunnel incredibly quickly and making pursuit difficult.
Kirk and Spock locate the creature and find it is a silicon-based living mound of rock. Kirk also discovers that it responds to the threat of his phaser and suspects that the creature's attacks are calculated. Spock then mind-melds with the creature and learns it's called a Horta. Hortas have an unusual lifecycle in that the species goes extinct every 50,000 years, with only one creature surviving to look after millions of eggs. The spheroid nodules that line the cave walls, they learn, are those eggs.

The long-standing debate of Star Trek v. Star Wars is a tale as old as time with two polarizing fandoms touting their respective space adventure sagas as the superior one. But the truth is, Star Trek walked so that Star Wars could run.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) | Disney/Lucasfilm
As stupefying as it may sound (especially for fans of the Jedis), the intergalactic franchise sired by George Lucas – which today stands tall and mighty as one of the biggest pop culture phenomenons – indeed reaped the benefits sowed by Star Trek. And that’s coming from the creator himself.
Star Trek Laid the Groundwork for Star Wars to Flourish
The Gene Roddenberry-created universe of Andorians and Romulans has been a worldwide spectacle ever since the first film dropped in the ’70s. The sci-fi franchise has come an incredibly long way in the interim, expanding its tentacles into 13 movies and 12 shows,...
