[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Sex Lives of College Girls, Season 3, Episode 5, “Parents Weekend 2.”] The Sex Lives of College Girls hosted its second parents weekend at Essex, bringing the families of Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet), Bela (Amrit Kaur), and Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) together again with some fresh faces in the mix. While Whitney’s mom Carol (Nicole Sullivan) was able to make it, her dad was missing this time around, whereas LeRoy McClain entered the scene as Whitney’s dad with her mom bowing out of this parents’ weekend dinner. Bela’s parents were present as they were for the last gathering, and newbies Kacey (Gracie Lawrence) and Taylor (Mia Rodgers) tagged along with Kacey’s mom (played by guest star Missi Pyle). The night was filled with obstacles, though, as Bela lied to Arvind (Nabeel Muscatwalla) about her parents being in town, making for an awkward run-in at the restaurant. After closing out September with a re-do of Jennifer’s Body (listen), a film we covered in one of our earliest episodes, and a discussion of Jonathan Glazer’s controversial Birth (listen), we’re continuing our theme of Anniversary/Diva Worship with a look at David Fincher‘s Gone Girl (2014).
Gone Girl sees Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike), the inspiration for the beloved series of “Amazing Amy” children’s books, go missing. The prime suspect is her husband Nick (Ben Affleck), though he is as shocked at his wife’s disappearance as the police are.
As the days go by and more clues are unearthed, it becomes clear that Nick isn’t honest as he seems, and that the marriage he had with Amy may not have been as blissful as everyone thought.

This just premiered at the 2024 Seattle Film Festival a few months ago, and will open in theaters starting in September this fall. Inspired by the director's own essay "Notes to My Twelve-Year-Old Self," Empire Waist centers on Lenore (starring Mia Kaplan), a highschooler deeply insecure about her weight and desperate to make herself smaller wherever she goes. After a friendship blooms between her & Kayla, an extroverted and confident fellow plus-size teen, Lenore begins stepping outside of her shell and embracing who she really is inside. Despite warnings from her mother—a diet-obsessed woman struggling with her own insecurities—and cruel bullying by the popular crowd at school, Lenore builds up her group of friends who are all dealing with their own obstacles,...

Margaret Cho shines in All That We Love, portraying a character dealing with pet grief in a profound and relatable way. The film explores deep themes of loss, friendship, and redemption, encouraging viewers to embrace empathy and cherish life. Director Yen Tan's personal connection to the story adds authenticity to the film, making it a heartfelt and touching tribute to beloved pets.
All That We Love, which premiered on June 8 at Tribeca Film Festival, is a touching albeit fictionalized tribute to filmmaker Yen Tan's own dearly departed dogs. Legendary comedian Margaret Cho stars as Emma, whose empty nest syndrome grows more pronounced after the death of her dog, Tanner. To top it off, she is dealing poorly with her ex-husband Andy (Kenneth Choi) and the fact that her daughter Maggie (Alice Lee) will soon be moving to Australia.

As Emma (Margaret Cho) grieves her recently deceased dog, her erstwhile coworker Kayla (Missi Pyle) tries to extend a bit of comfort. “My grandma used to say that, once they know they’re yours, they’ll always be with you,” she says. “Even when they’re gone, they’ll find a way to let you know they’re still there.”
It’s the sort of well-meaning, well-worn sentiment that anyone who’s suffered such a tragedy has certainly heard before, and that, depending on the context, might read as trite bullshit or a profound insight. All That We Love takes it as its north star, and turns it into the latter. What could sound on paper like a saccharine sobfest becomes a gentle meditation on love in all its forms, and the grooves it leaves behind even after the objects of our affection have gone.

“All That We Love” is not, at first brush, a lovable film. Or perhaps the midlife crisis meets coming-of-age drama led by Margaret Cho is too lovable and therefore falls flat for its earnestness?
Cho stars as Emma, an empty nester who realizes just how alone she truly is after the death of her family dog Tanner. Emma is frustrated at work, faced with the return of her ex-husband Andy (Kenneth Choi), and forced to confront the fact that her daughter Maggie (Alice Lee) is relocating to Australia with her boyfriend (Devon Bostick). Basically, Emma is having a bad time. The only bright spot in Emma’s social circle, it seems, is her friendship with Stan (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), who is also dealing with a loss of his own…and a crisis reaction that includes purchasing a motorcycle.
As Stan comforts Emma, she begins to reevaluate the (non-canine) relationships in her life.

Galaxy Quest star Missi Pyle would be interested in returning as Laliari. Pyle joins many other cast members who have shared similar desires to reprise their roles. Despite reports of a TV series, there have been limited updates on that and any movie sequels.
Galaxy Quest star Missi Pyle offers a hopeful update on the chances of a sequel after 10 years in development hell. The original 1999 sci-fi comedy is a parody of sci-fi movies and shows. Star Trek's influence is particularly strong in the film, which follows a group of sci-fi show actors who are abducted by aliens after the extraterrestrial race mistakes their fictional show for a documentary. Despite the film's cult status, 25 years have passed without Galaxy Quest 2. However, some of the cast still hold onto hope that it will become a reality.

Gelder’s husband, Ben Daniels, shared a post on social media announcing his death.
“It is with huge huge sadness and a heavy heart broken into a million pieces that I’m leaving this post to announce the passing of my darling husband and life partner Ian Gelder,” read the post from Daniels on Instagram. “Ian was diagnosed with bile duct cancer in December and yesterday he passed at 13.07. I’d stopped all work to be his carer but neither of us had any idea that it would all be so fast.”
Daniels called Gelder his “absolute rock” and said they had “been partners for more than 30 years.”
“If we weren’t together we spoke to each other everyday,” Daniels continued. “He was the kindest, most generous spirited and loving human being.

"Direct engagement with the camera can add a lot." Lionsgate has unveiled the official trailer for an indie comedy titled The Moon and Back, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Leah Bleich. This initially premiered in 2022 at a few small regional film festivals, and is finally set for a VOD release in April this spring after a two year wait. A year after her father's death, high schooler Lydia Gilbert feels completely lost - until she discovers something: a space opera script in need of a blockbuster budget, written by her father. She picks up an old VHS camcorder and whatever else she can find to try & actually make the movie. A nerdy coming-of-age comedy starring Isabel May as Lydia, along with Nat Faxon, Missi Pyle, P.J. Byrne, and Miles Gutierrez-Riley. Despite the heartfelt story, this film looks rather messy & forgettable. // Continue Reading ›...

It isn’t every day you encounter a pop-disco musical about a buoyant aspiring circus performer and a brooding aspiring rock singer with competing Mommy issues falling in love in Mexico City against the electricized rearrangements of the Indigo Girls. And that’s not exactly lamentable, because I wouldn’t categorize English-language Glitter & Doom as necessarily essential cinema … though I also couldn’t accuse it of being anything other than original either. (Well, except for the foundational premise of opposites attracting and then ultimately clashing over dueling artistic ambitions.) Director Tom Gustafson (Were the World Mine) has crafted a sweet if plodding love story but it’s hard to truly hate on this whirling candy-colored poetic fairytale — it’s just too sincere, much like the musical source material.

Let’s start here: the production design in Tom Gustafson’s Glitter & Doom is impeccable, colorful, and memorable. Too often these days films lack an adventurous color palette. Here we have a welcome outlier. Production designer Geo Martínez breathes life into each frame. Next there’s the music. The film is a musical set to the indelible tunes of the Indigo Girls, the folk-rock duo that became a household name in the late ’80s and early ’90s with hits like “Closer to Fine” and “Galileo.” Without question are music and lyrics the most essential piece of this problematically simple narrative. These artists are long overdue for legacy-laden admiration and celebration.
Now, for some criticism. We have Glitter (Alex Diaz) who wants to be a successful circus performer. We have Doom (Alan Cammish) who wants to be a successful musician. Both are struggling as they tilt at the windmills of their dreams.

It’s been almost exactly 35 years since the Indigo Girls first broke out with their eponymous second album, yet the Power of Two continues to thrive still, especially on the screen. “Barbie” recently pointed us “in a crooked line” with Margot Robbie’s rendition of “Closer to Fine”, while last year’s Sundance doc, titled “It’s Only Life After All“, brought us up close and personal with the duo themselves.
Following those movie tributes now comes another, in the form of “Glitter & Doom,” a jukebox musical that celebrates the enduring legacy that Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have crafted through their raw, passionate, and deeply personal brand of queer folk rock. But does the movie live up to their legendary talents or is it doomed to go the way of a film like “Yesterday“?

"Ma" is a psychological horror film that explores how past trauma influences adult decisions and behaviors. The main character, Sue Ann, befriends high school students as a way to seek revenge against her childhood bullies. The film delves into themes of race, gender, and teen movie tropes, while also examining the dangers of revenge and the lasting impact of unprocessed grief.
The psychological horror film Ma ending examines how past trauma informs adult decisions. An outcast woman struggles to maintain healthy relationships with people her own age, so she befriends high school students instead. Directed by Tate Taylor, Ma is grounded by the main character’s internalized grief and ulterior motives, and provides a subtextual commentary on race, gender, and teen movie tropes. In Ma, Octavia Spencer portrays Sue Ann Ellington, a veterinary technician living in Ohio. She meets a group of high school students and agrees to buy alcohol for them.

The original film, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story was released in 2004 and was very well-received both critically and commercially. The story, which also features a mustachioed Ben Stiller as the antagonist White Goodman, follows a group of misfits who enter a dodgeball tournament in the hopes of winning $50,000 to save their beloved local gym.
According to Deadline, the Dodgeball sequel has entered the development stage at 20th Century Studios, which also produced the original. Vaughn has also been confirmed to reprise his starring role and will likely work on the project as a producer. The movie is expected to continue the story of Lafleur, who ended the last film by winning the dodgeball tournament and using the prize money to keep his gym open.

It's finally happening: "Dodgeball: A True Underdog" is getting a sequel and, what's more, Vince Vaughn will be returning as Peter La Fleur. The original comedy came out nearly 20 years ago back in 2004 and was a big hit in its day. Naturally, there was lots of talk of a sequel that never actually materialized. Now though, Vaughn has committed to the film and it is in development at 20th Century Studios, with a new writer on board.
According to Deadline, Vaughn will star in and possibly produce the sequel, which does not yet have an official title. Jordan VanDina ("The Binge") has been tapped to pen the screenplay, working from an idea that Vaughn cooked up himself. It is described as being in "early" development, so there's no word yet on a director or plot details. Rawson Marshall Thurber, of "Red Notice" and "We're the Millers" fame, wrote and directed the original film.

We’re not sure who asked for it, but Vince Vaughn is returning to star in a sequel to his 2004 comedy Dodgeball, reports Deadline.
The film is in early development stages at 20th Century Studios, with Jordan VanDina attached to write the script based on an idea from Vaughn. This isn’t the first time Vaughn has worked together with VanDina; the actor starred in The Binge, a 2020 parody of The Purge that was also penned by the writer.
At this time, there’s no word yet about whether Rawson Marshall Thurber — who wrote and directed the original Dodgeball — will be involved with the sequel. However, Thurber previously said “never say never” about expanding the Dodgeball universe. Vaughn, who will likely produce the movie, is the only actor currently attached.

If you can dodge a wrench, then you can dodge the curse of the crappy comedy sequel… hopefully. Deadline has reported that Vince Vaughn is set to return for the long-awaited Dodgeball sequel, which is in early development at 20th Century Studios.
The Dodgeball sequel has been scripted by Jordan VanDina (The Binge) and it’s expected that Vince Vaughn will also produce. The original movie starred Vaughn as Pete Lafleur, owner of Average Joe’s Gym. When he defaults on the gym’s mortgage, he enters a Las Vegas dodgeball tournament with his misfit friends in order to win the $50,000 prize to save their cherished gym from being taken over by corporate health fitness chain Globo Gym. Rawson Marshall Thurber wrote and directed the original movie, but it’s unknown if he will be involved in the sequel in any form.

Time to brush up on the 5 D’s of “Dodgeball” — “dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge” — because a sequel to the 2004 hit comedy is officially in the works.
Vince Vaughn is returning to star in the sequel, which is in early development at 20th Century Studios. Plot details are being kept under wraps but Jordan VanDina (“The Binge”) has signed on to pen the script, from an idea by Vaughn.
The original film “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story,” followed Peter La Fleur (Vaughn), owner of Average Joe’s Gym, a small and shabby, yet cherished, local haunt frequented by a group of misfits. In order to save the gym from being taken over by Globo Gym, a corporate fitness chain run by White Goodman (Ben Stiller), Peter and his friends enter a Las Vegas dodgeball tournament with a $50,000 grand prize.

Exclusive: Vince Vaughn will return to star in (and likely produce) a sequel to his hit 2004 comedy, Dodgeball, scripted by Jordan VanDina (The Binge), which is in early development at 20th Century Studios, Deadline has learned.
While Rawson Marshall Thurber wrote and directed the original film for 20th Century Fox, it’s not yet clear whether he’ll be involved in the sequel, and who, if not Thurber, would direct. Equally uncertain is who will join Vaughn on screen, though there’s certainly a deep bench of talent to pull from in looking back to Dodgeball‘s stacked ensemble, which included Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, Justin Long, Stephen Root, Alan Tudyk, Joel David Moore, Chris Williams, Missi Pyle, Gary Cole, Jason Bateman and William Shatner, as well as the late Rip Torn.
