- In 2003, she shared the first Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award with writer and illustrator Maurice Sendak.
- She was a writer of over 150 children's books. After attending art school, she was planning to start her career as an illustrator when she drew a red-haired girl with an impish personality. She wrote a story to go with her drawings, and published "Fiery Frederica" in 1970. The story received more praise than the illustrations, so she became a writer.
- Her father was a watchmaker, and her mother ran a nursery school. Her family became homeless after Allied forces bombed Vienna during WWII.
