Animation is traditionally considered a tyke-targeted genre, but films like Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet, an uneven but unassailably ambitious adaptation of the Lebanese author’s classic prose poetry collection, challenge that perception. After all, it’s hard to imagine that the children who would be enraptured by the movie’s often gorgeous visuals would find themselves equally stimulated by its dense meditations on life, death, love and the ties that bind us to the natural world. Maybe that’s short-changing the more astute young’uns out there, but there’s no denying that The Prophet, with its steadfast devotion to Gibran’s verse, is layered in the extreme.
Further blurring the intended audience for this take on the book is how it constructs a treacly Disney story within which to communicate the poet’s eloquent musings. Salma Hayek, as performer and producer, seems to have coaxed The Prophet – oft...

While Girls could have easily turned any college campus into the University of Iowa for their fourth season, the show was hoping for authenticity by getting the real deal on film. Sadly it was not to be, even though Girls writer Sarah Heyward is herself a graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop. "While we are pleased that the Iowa Writers’ Workshop is receiving national attention and that our graduate is doing well in her career, our general practice is to not allow filming, due to potential disruption to campus,” university spokesman Tom Moore confirmed. On the bright side, the request indicates that Hannah will likely attend the University of Iowa rather than talking herself out of enrollment in favor of, say, getting back together with Adam. Plus, it will make the second episode where he runs barefoot and shirtless to see her even more epic than the first.

Exclusive: The Secret of Kells director’s sophomore animation gets sales company.
WestEnd Films has signed on to sell Tom Moore’s anticipated animation Song of the Sea, the director’s follow up to Oscar-nominated animation The Secret of Kells.
Brendan Gleeson, Fionnula Flanagan, David Rawle, Lisa Hannigan, Pat Shortt and Jon Kenny are among the voice cast in the Cartoon Saloon-produced family-animation, due for release late this year.
Like Moore’s previous film, Song of the Sea takes inspiration from Irish folklore, centring on the legend of the Selkies, mythological creatures that are part seal, part human.
The storyline revolves around brother and sister Ben and Saoirse, who are forced to leave their coastal home to live with their grandmother following their mother’s mysterious disappearance.
Oscar-nominated composer Bruno Coulais again joined forces with Irish Band Kíla to create the score after their collaboration on 2009 feature Kells.

Chris Colfer finally talked about "The Breakup," and while we have serious issues about his assertion that he was the ugly half of a power couple, we are curious with his speculation as the what the future holds for Kurt. "I'm just really excited to see what the future holds for him in general. Whether that means dating one person or a few over the course of the season, I just want to see him live and be his own person. He had a really bad year last season so it's been nice to see him spread his wings."

On September 3, 1981, Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas brought Bernard Sabath's The Boys of Autumn for a trial run to Marines Memorial Theatre, San Francisco. A "what-if" tale about the reunion of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn 50 years after their infamous adventures on the Mississippi, Lancaster played Henry Finnegan (Huck, of course) and Douglas his old friend Thomas Gray (Sawyer). Having retired from vaudeville, Tom Sawyer--who has been using the stage name of Thomas Gray--returns to his home in the South searching for his boyhood friend Huckleberry Finn. The play was directed by Tom Moore and ran for four weeks (some sources say six) and reunited Lancaster and Douglas for their seventh collaboration after previously starring together in six films: I Walk Alone (1948), Gunfight at the Ok Corral (1957), The Devil's Disciple (1959), The List of Adrian Messenger (1963), Seven Days in May (1964), and the made-for-tv Victory at Entebbe (1976). They would work together...

For anyone who’s been paying attention to the Oscar race, there were few surprises in this morning’s nominations. The only two real upsets, as far as I’m concerned, took place in the animated categories. First, the announcement of Tom Moore’s The Secret of Kells among the nominated features induced a nationwide wave of befuddlement and puzzled cries of “What the fuck is The Secret of Kells and how did it beat out the quite successful Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs?” Audiences will have a chance to find out for themselves in March, when the European-produced, 2-D gem, about the crafting of the legendary, 9th-century Irish masterpiece of Biblical illumination, is released in U.S. As our friends at Movieline point out, “They say it’s an honor just to be nominated. In Kells’ case, it’s also a multimillion publicity campaign that doesn’t cost a cent.
