He and Elizabeth Montgomery fell in love during the eighth year of production of her TV series, A Feiticeira (1964), during which he directed many of the episodes. When they moved in together it broke up her marriage to William Asher and his to Kristina Hansen. The relationship lasted 2-1/2 years.

His daughter, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, was the first woman to be ranked #1 in the world in equestrian show jumping. She won an Olympic bronze medal in Rio in 2016.

In October 1994 he retired from directing. Moved to Maui, HI, in 2003.

At age 22 was script supervisor on the film version of O Parceiro de Satanás (1958), and O Moço de Filadélfia (1959) with Paul Newman He was also script supervisor on Kirk Douglas's favorite movie, Sua Última Façanha (1962).

In 1955, at age 19, went to Hollywood and secured a job at Allied Artists. Became a script supervisor apprentice on William Wyler's production of Sublime Tentação (1956), starring Gary Cooper, Dorothy McGuire and Anthony Perkins.

First job in the entertainment industry was in 1954 as a summer assistant to legendary New York sportscaster Marty Glickman.
