Batman has one of the most enviable ensembles of recurring villains in superhero comics. Look back at the 1960s "Batman" TV series starring Adam West, though, and not a lot of those now familiar evildoers are there.
Oh, for sure, the Joker (Cesar Romero), the Riddler, Catwoman, and the Penguin (Burgess Meredith) all frequently guest star. It's because of the West series that this crew was long considered the Big Four of Batman villains; it's no coincidence that they were also the first four villains to star in the Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher-directed "Batman" films.
Then you had some other comic villains, like Mr. Freeze and the Mad Hatter, put in a few appearances too. But many episodes of "Batman" instead had West's Caped Crusader and Robin (Burt Ward) face villains created specifically for the show, including wannabe pharoah...

One of the best aspects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Multiverse Saga is the fact that we get to enjoy adventures set within that world on the small screen now too. It's true, the addition of the Disney Plus shows have added a whole new layer to the MCU, allowing the Marvel Studios franchise to explore new stories across an extended period of time without being constricted by the typical two or three hour runtime.
It also allows the franchise to spotlight some beloved characters from the movies who didn't get enough focus. We saw that in early shows such as WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki, all of which spotlighted some of the McU's most popular-and-yet-underappreciated characters in leading roles. Even the more recent Agatha All Along placed the spotlight on WandaVision's best supporting character, showcasing the beauty of placing the spotlight on supporting characters every once in a while.

As Marvel Studios continues to build towards the culmination of the Multiverse Saga, excitement is at an all-time high for the stories that are about to be told. That has a lot to do with the fact that, after a series of ups and downs, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is finally back on track with success stories like Deadpool and Wolverine and Disney Plus' Agatha All Along. The announcement that the next Avengers movie would be bringing back MCU veteran Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom was just the icing on the cake.
With the saga once again a must-see event, there are a number of titles that the studio has clearly been building towards for some time now. The potential for some of these titles was always there, but it's only since the Multiverse Saga began that we have seen them begin to come to fruition. And one of those is that long-awaited,...

The DC Universe introduces its own version of Batman in "The Brave and the Bold," which highlights the importance of properly adapting Catwoman. Catwoman has been consistently portrayed well in live-action films, except for the critically panned 2004 movie starring Halle Berry. "The Brave and the Bold" is set to debut in the DC Universe, following the comic series and promising new character introductions and recasts.
The DC Universe will have its own version of Batman in The Brave and The Bold, and it needs to stand out from previous Batman movies by not being ashamed of Catwoman. The DC Universe is preparing for its official launch with the TV series Creature Commandos in December 2024 and the movie Superman in 2025, but the plans for this connected universe already look promising. Marvel Comics roots reach back to Golden Age characters like Ka-Zar, Ghost Rider, and Marvel Boy who were later reimagined in the Silver Age. Characters like Miss America, Electro, and The Vision have rich histories from the Golden Age reimagined for the modern era in Marvel Comics. Bruce Wayne's suits need to be practical for survival, especially without superpowers like other heroes. Adam West's iconic Batman had the least practical suit with no protection or stealth features. Pattinson's Batman suit in "The Batman" is the most practical yet, offering mobility, protection, and unique gadgets.
Batman has an impressively long and rich cinematic history, which has been accompanied by a plethora of Bat Suits - however, not all of them make sense for a crime fighter without superpowers. DC's Caped Crusader has gone through massive transformations in the pages of DC Comics, ranging from fairly campy to dark and brooding noir. These interpretations have also been mirrored on the big screen, and different Batmans have meant different Batsuits.
Given that Bruce Wayne is just a regular person under his suit, it makes it all the more important for the many Batman movies to explain why he isn't...

This post contains spoilers for Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver #1.
Who are Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch? Most would say that they are Marvel superheroes, twin members of the Avengers and, sometimes, the X-Men. And while those answers aren’t wrong, the truth has always been a bit more complicated when it comes to these two. And the new series Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver #1 — by writer Steve Orlando, artist Lorenzo Tammetta, colorist Frank William, and letterer Ariana Maher — only makes it more complicated.
Since their first appearance in 1964’s X-Men #4, the twins have gone from heroes to villains and back again. Moreover, their parentage has changed time and again, going from the kids of Romani villagers Django and Marya Maximoff to the children of Golden Age heroes Miss America and the Whizzer. In the most popular and most long-running explanation, Magneto has been presented as the true father of Pietro and Wanda.

At the end of Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s 1988 one-shot Batman: The Killing Joke, the Joker lays out his worldview in plain terms. Everything anybody ever valued or struggled for… it’s all a monstrous, demented gag!”

Vanessa Williams has plenty of advice she’d give her younger self, knowing how far she’s come since being crowned Miss America back in 1984.
Williams gained recognition after becoming the first African-American woman to receive the Miss America title 40 years ago, with her reflecting on the honour while chatting to Et Canada’s Carlos Bustamante.
Williams shared of what she’d tell her younger self, who was 20 at the time, to prepare her for what was to come: “I had no idea I would become internationally famous overnight, for sure. I didn’t realize the scope of responsibility that I would have at 20 years old. And I would tell myself not to take everything personally.
“When you’re 20 years old and you’re just being yourself and people say, ‘Well, we hate you because you’re black, we hate you because you’re not black enough, we hate you because you’re not Southern.

In a variety of live-action adaptations, DC's Catwoman has been portrayed by ten actors, but many more almost played the antihero opposite Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman. Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman, debuted in DC Comics back in 1940's Batman #1, originally depicted as a supervillain to Gotham City's Caped Crusader but later was shown to be an antihero and Batman's longest-running love-interest. Since then, several other DC characters have taken up the moniker of Catwoman, including Holly Robinson and Eiko Hasigawa, and the character has been adapted into a variety of live-action and animated media since the 1960s.
Alongside the Joker, Catwoman is the most regular supporting character to Bruce Wayne in live-action Batman stories, first being introduced by Julie Newmar in 1966's Batman TV series, though she would later be replaced by Eartha Kitt, and Lee Meriwether for the 1966 Batman feature film, based on the series. Leslie H. Martinson's 1966 feature film "Batman," a spinoff feature from the popular TV series that launched the same year, is -- without hyperbole -- one of the best films of its decade. There is no film more sublimely self-aware, more colorful, funnier, or more brazenly entertaining than "Batman." None of the Batman films since have managed to approach Martinson's miraculous cinematic purity and subversive satire. "Batman" celebrates the ridiculous, childlike glory inherent in superhero comics, while also sending it up; Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) are so obnoxiously square, one can't help but laugh at them a little bit. However, West and Ward are so brilliantly earnest in their comedic performances, one can't help but also admire their genius. Add to that four over-the-top villain performances from Cesar Romero, Frank Gorshin, Lee Meriwether, and Burgess Meredith, and one can see how "Batman" approaches the sublime. It is...

Catwoman has had a ton of live-action appearances in the Batman series, but each time her relationship with Bruce Wayne is entirely different. Catwoman's always-changing motivation makes her one of the franchise's most interesting characters, as sometimes she is a hero, a love interest, a criminal, or even one of Gotham's most notorious villains. Because of Catwoman's shifting role in Gotham, her dynamic with Batman is always changing, with the two having a different relationship in each live-action adaptation.
Catwoman is one of the longest-running Batman characters, first appearing in 1940's Batman #1. Although she first appears as a fairly one-dimensional cat burglar, Catwoman has since become one of DC's most dynamic characters, with her relationship with Batman adding an interesting layer to the character. First appearing in season 1 of the 1966 Batman TV series, Catwoman has been portrayed by many different actresses in all kinds of Batman movies and TV shows.

William Dozier's 1966 TV adaptation of "Batman" remains, even at this late date, the high water mark for all Batman media.
Colorful, whimsical, surreal, and borderline kinky, "Batman" served as an arch satire of the conservative underpinnings of most mainstream comic book heroes. Batman and Robin, played by the legendary Adam West and Burt Ward, were depicted as simultaneously heroic and terminally square, eschewing vice and indecency in favor of painfully wholesome, all-American activities such as camping, chess, drinking milk, birdwatching, and engaging in proper hygiene. Batman and Robin were walking 1950s classroom scare films, living in a bizarre universe of costumed vigilantes and horny criminals. The brilliance of the show came largely from West and Ward, who were able to deliver some of the strangest dialogue ever written without once ever winking or cracking a smile. "Batman" is a comedy masterpiece.

Cara Mund's run for North Dakota's sole seat in the US House of Representatives is a one-woman show. The 28-year-old and former Miss America says she currently holds nearly a dozen job titles: head of social media, campaign manager, treasurer.
"I really earned my way onto the ballot," Mund says. "There's so much that we as women candidates face in terms of barriers that we have to prove even more why we deserve to be there."
Mund, who graduated from Harvard Law School earlier this year, announced her candidacy in August - a late entry for any congressional race.
With its recent release on HBO Max, The Batman continues to reshape the public’s perception of what a superhero movie can be. But it’s hardly the first time that the Dark Knight appeared on screen. In fact, outside of some serials of questionable quality in the 1940s, Batman’s feature film debut came with 1966’s Batman: The Movie.
For some viewers, there could not be a larger disparity between the pop art of the 60s movie and the gothic look of Matt Reeves’s film. But the Corridor Crew on YouTube found a way. A recently-posted video recreates The Batman’s first trailer, digitally replacing actors from the 2022 film with their 1966 counterparts. Instead of Robert Pattinson solving the clues of Paul Dano’s Riddler, we watch Adam West stare down Frank Gorshin. Now, it’s the 1955 Ford Lincoln Futura Batmobile instead of a ’69 Charger chasing down Burgess Meredith’s Penguin,...

Few modern characters have captivated audiences and storytellers alike quite like Batman. Ever since writer Bill Finger and artist Bob Kane debuted the character in a 1939 issue of Detective Comics, the Dark Knight has demanded interest, first in comics, but soon also in TV, games and of course, movies. Because, goodness, there sure are a lot of Batman movies.
It didn’t take long for The Caped Crusader to arrive on film, making his theatrical debut all the way back in 1943 with a pair of Columbia Pictures serial films, and since then, the character’s cultural imprint has grown exponentially, with more than nine actors taking on the role in film – in fact, we’re about to have three live-action Batmen at the same time with the arrival of “The Flash.”
If that sounds like the Batman timeline is a confusing one, it can be, especially once the DC Multiverse opens up.

Turns out that Zoë Kravitz brought an LGBTQ twist to her no-claws-barred interpretation of Catwoman.
Selina Kyle, Aka Catwoman, has been portrayed through the years by the likes of Eartha Kitt, Michelle Pfeiffer, Anne Hathaway, Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether, and Halle Berry (in the latter’s own divisive and critically reviled standalone film). Each has put her own spin on the character, and while Kravitz’s take is no exception, there’s one element that brings her Selina Kyle back to the basics of the comics: Kravitz interpreted her Catwoman as bisexual, which is often how she’s sketched in the source material.
As the actress discussed in a new interview with Australian outlet Pedestrian, there are moments in the film when Selina (Kravitz) calls her friend and roommate Anika, “baby.” As Kravitz explained, this opened the door to their relationship as being more intimate than just roommates.

Holy episode count Batman! The 60s Batman television series last 120 episodes over 3 seasons ending in 1968. The show followed Batman and Robin as they battled various criminals in Gotham city with little focus on their alter egos. Batman was a camp series with situations being played for laughs and vastly different from what modern audiences see Batman as. Most of Batman’s rogue’s gallery appears in the show and the series also introduced Barbara Gordon as Batgirl.

Principal photography on Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” kicked off this month in England, with Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman and Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle / Catwoman, his most enduring love interest, with whom he’s had a complex love-hate relationship.
Speaking to reporters on Friday after a Television Critics Association (TCA) presentation for her upcoming Hulu series “High Fidelity,” Kravitz suggested that, in preparing to play Catwoman, she was looking for inspiration from an actress who previously wore the black catsuit in a movie.
“I think Catwoman is an iconic character,” Kravitz said. “I was never into a lot of comic books, but that world was always really intriguing to me. And then of course Michelle Pfeiffer — her performance has always been super inspiring to me. It just felt iconic.”

We look at each of the actors who've played Catwoman on screen from Julie Newmar in Batman '66 to the recently announced Zoe Kravitz.
Ever since her first appearance under the moniker "The Cat" in 1940's Batman #1, Catwoman has clawed her way into comic book history as one of the most memorable characters ever created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane. Over the years Selina Kyle has become a fan favorite rogue as both an antagonist and love interest for Bruce Wayne. The pair has not only been crossing proverbial swords for almost 80 years but in the wild world of DC Comics they've also had a (non-canon) child together, almost gotten married, and often teamed up for the better of Gotham City. That Bat and Cat dynamic is an enduring one, and it's about to get a reimaging with the announcement that Zoe Kravitz will take on...

Now this is some casting news to get excited about: Zoë Kravitz is joining the cast of Matt Reeves's The Batman as . . . drumroll please . . . Catwoman!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, she tested opposite leading man Robert Pattinson last week. In addition to Kravitz, talented stars like Ana de Armas, Ella Balinska, and Eiza González also read for the role, but we can totally see why the Big Little Lies actress nabbed it. Although she might be best known for playing Bonnie on the HBO domestic drama, she's no stranger to action-heavy films thanks to her previous work in the Divergent franchise, X-Men: First Class, and Mad Max: Fury Road. We imagine scaling buildings and whipping her foes into submission in the character's iconic catsuit should be a cinch.

It was never his intention to be remembered as the Alfred Hitchcock of the Chester-Delaware Counties of Eastern Pennsylvania. Director Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr. was a devout Christian whose real passion was turning out religious-themed short films that would bring the Gospel to the masses. But such proselytizing was cost prohibitive. So, at the suggestion of - and in partnership with - Philadelphia-based distributor/producer Jack H. Harris, Yeaworth signed on to direct a handful of low-budget teenage dramas and science-fiction films. Harris had convinced Yeaworth that there was a cash-grab market for such indie films, and these productions would bring in enough revenue to fund projects with loftier aspirations.
Yeaworth’s first feature film (as co-producer), The Flaming Teenage (1956), was not really his at all. It was instead a cobble of pre-existing footage from a drug-abuse morality fable now disguised and sold to distributors as an exploitation film.

An old monster formula props up this fantastic film, but at its heart is a brilliant central idea that excites the imagination. Jack H. Harris’s sophomore picture after The Blob is on the awkward side, but the good stuff is much better than we expect it to be. Ambitious performances by Robert Lansing, Lee Meriwether and James Congdon come through with something unique, with graces we just don’t find in independent Sci-Fi from the late 1950s. And the new Blu-ray rejuvenates the film’s special effects — all it took was a good 4K restoration.

“Gotham” star Camren Bicondova announced on Twitter Friday that her time as Catwoman has come to an end, as she will not appear in next week’s series finale.
“It’s important to me that I’m the one to tell you this because it was a choice that I made, through a lot of thoughts, prayer, and time
“I wanted to give Selina Kyle as much respect as possible. Some will say that giving her respect would include seeing the character through to the end of the show, which I understand,” Bicondova wrote.
“But I firmly believe that part of leaving a legacy and being part of a legacy means knowing when to pass the torch to someone else. I was blessed to be the vessel for Selina Kyle for her formative teen years, and it only felt right to give someone else the torch for her adult self.

When it comes to characters that we love, you’ll probably agree with me in saying that we all possess some vague memory of how we were exposed to them. As a lifelong fan of Batman, I can at least remember that Adam West was my introduction to the Dark Knight (or Bright Knight, in this case). Honestly, I can’t properly recall if it was via the TV show from the ’60s or the Super Friends animated series, but either way, he was my first Batman.
Having confessed that, you can imagine that I was quite thrilled when West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar reprised their roles of Batman, Robin and Catwoman, respectively, in last year’s Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders. Last year, Warner Bros. treated us with the awesome Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, which saw the likes of Adam West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar reprise their roles of Batman, Robin and Catwoman, respectively. Being essentially the beginning to a fourth season we never received, it surpassed expectations by retaining the feel of the classic 1960’s television series, while also featuring grandiose action scenes that could’ve never been accomplished on the budget of the show.
Having said that, we’re thrilled to see that its sequel, Batman vs. Two-Face, looks like it may be even better. In addition to the return of the aforementioned actors, expect William Shatner to lend his pipes to the dichotomous Harvey Dent, a character who never actually appeared on the TV show itself during its original run.

There are typically a lot of Batmen at Comic-Con, but only one was the subject of a star-filled tribute.
Filmmaker Kevin Smith, producer James Tucker, actors Ralph Garman and Lee Meriwether, and about a thousand fans paid tribute to the late Adam West at the pop culture convention Thursday night.

By now, you’re well aware that the world lost one of the biggest icons the superhero genre has ever produced with the passing of Adam West less than two weeks ago. Sure, he may have been the third actor to portray Batman in live action, but “The Bright Knight” was unarguably the first to put his stamp on the character and turn it into a pop culture phenomenon.
Having played the Caped Crusader across three seasons of television and in a silver screen outing in 1966, West actually continued voicing the timeless hero in various animated series for decades to come. Not only that, but recent years have seen a resurgence made by his iteration of the character, thanks to Fox (the studio that produced the TV series) and Warner Bros. (the company that owns Batman) patching things up. And due to their cutting of red tape, an animated movie (with a sequel on the way) and a line of action figures have since made the world a better place.
Thus, it was only fitting that the stars came out to honor the legend’s memory by lighting a Batsignal in Los Angeles. Among those in attendance were colleagues such as Burt Ward (Robin) and Lee Meriwether (Catwoman), in addition to DC Entertainment co-publisher Jim Lee and legions of fans who were fortunate enough to be there. And, fortunately for those of us who were unable to partake, DC All Access was able to bring the event to us.
Aside from that, today’s episode also looked ahead to next week’s season finale of iZombie. According to lead actress Rose McIver, they’re going to payoff this whole looming threat of a zombie virus outbreak in a big way. Sure, this show is a much different beast than The Walking Dead, but you can’t play with such horrific themes and not take them to their logical conclusion at some point.

For a few hours on Thursday, Los Angeles stood in for Gotham City as thousands of Bat-fans lined the streets to pay tribute to the late Batman actor Adam West as the famed Batsignal was projected upon L.A.’s City Hall tower.
Burt Ward, who co-starred as the Caped Crusader’s teen sidekick Robin alongside West on on the phenomenally popular and slyly campy 1960s TV series, was on hand to celebrate the life of his longtime friend along with West’s wife Marcelle, his children and other members of his family.
West passed away June 9 at age 88 following a brief battle with leukemia.

Anne Hathaway wasn't the first person to play DC Comics Catwoman and she won't be the last. But is there a future for her version of the classic character in the current Warner Bros. DC film universe? Hathaway recently spoke to Variety while promoting her latest film, Colossal. Considering Warner Bros' DC Comics films are getting a lot of attention right now, and she played Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, they asked her if she'd be opposed to doing a Catwoman movie. She replied, "Of course not." That's not to say it's going to become a reality. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was also recently asked about continuing his Dkr role and said in part the third film was "the perfect ending to that story." "I loved that character so much and I had such a blast playing it," Hathaway told Variety but added the obvious caveat, "I'm...

I live in Los Angeles, and my residency here means that a lot of great film programming-- revival screenings, advance looks at upcoming releases and vital, fascinating glimpses at unheralded, unexpected cinema from around the world—is available to me on a week-by-week basis. But I’ve never been to Cannes. Toronto, Tribeca, New York, Venice, Berlin, Sundance, SXSW, these festivals are all events that I have yet to be lucky enough to attend, and I can reasonably expect that it’s probably going to stay that way for the foreseeable future. I never attended a film festival of any kind until I made my way to the outskirts of the Mojave Desert for the Lone Pine Film Festival in 2006, which was its own kind of grand adventure, even if it wasn’t exactly one for bumping shoulders with critics, stars and fanatics on the French Riviera.

This Friday, a little movie titled Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters. Perhaps you may have seen an advertisement or two about it. The film marks the first official pairing of Bats and Supes in a feature film. Surely there are longtime fans eager to see them pec-to-pec, but some fans will be excited about the film's other big debut: Wonder Woman. Ever since Gal Gadot was cast in the role, comic book (and TV) fans have been eager to find out how Wonder Woman would be realized on the big screen. Shockingly, the character has never had...
