Looking ahead to 2025, here are the 45 films of all genres – from horror to comedy to drama and more – we reckon you really shouldn’t miss.
Special mentions:
Firstly, the movies you won’t be seeing, but want to namecheck. Our rules were that we didn’t want to include films that had screened, but not made it to the UK yet (with the exception of British films). Hence – sorry Kevin – the next Horizon film isn’t on the list. There’s stuff we’re watching for release dates too: Above The Below, Mother’s Pride, All Of You, and such like. We acknowledge too that there’s a Michael Jackson biopic that you won’t find below. Plus superhero films that don’t really need our help, so we limited ourselves to one or two of those.
Instead, here’s the 45 films firmly on our radar for 2025…

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum producer Basil Iwanyk shares a new explanation about why Winston shoots John at the end of the movie. Directed by franchise veteran Chad Stahelski, the third installment in the hit franchise sees Keanu Reeves return as Wick to fend off an army of assassins after the High Table places a bounty on his head. The John Wick 3 ending memorably features Wick seemingly emerging victorious before Winston (Ian McShane), in a bid to regain control of his Continental hotel, shoots John off a rooftop.
In a new interview with The Direct, Iwanyk, who produced all four films in the franchise, breaks down Winston's decision during the final moments of John Wick 3. The producer provides a more overarching explanation, which includes the general ethos for all characters in the John Wick assassin universe, but also dives deep into the Winston and John dynamic and...

A producer behind John Wick: Chapter 3 explained why exactly Ian McShane's Winston shot Keanu Reeves' titular anti-hero at the end of the third film.
Winston and John Wick have always been close friends and acquaintances throughout the movies. While Wick has a long history as an assassin, Winston is in charge of The Continental in New York City (which got a prequel spinoff on Peacock)––one of the most famous headquarters for their secretive underground society.
The bond between the two characters, which goes back decades, seemed unbreakable.

When you want to add a sense of legitimacy and an unrivaled cool factor into your action franchise, you cast Donnie Yen. If you want to take full advantage of the legendary Hong Kong action star's talents, well, you hire him as the director of your action franchise. Leave it to the "John Wick" property to potentially bring together the best of both worlds for its upcoming spinoff, centered on Yen's ultra-cool, scene-stealing assassin Caine from "John Wick: Chapter 4."

John Wick's Caine spinoff movie receives a major directing update from Donnie Yen, who is returning to reprise his role as the blind assassin.
In an interview with Collider, Yen revealed that he is not only set to reprise his role, but is also in talks to direct the Caine spinoff himself:
I think both the fans, as well as the studio, want this to happen, and we'll see. I don't know. I can only tell you that much. But yes, we are talking, and we are talking intimately. We'll see what happens. But at the same time, I hold responsibility as well as a pressure that I don't want to ruin the franchise. I try to do my best to bring something fresh to the franchise itself. I don't want to bring down the expectations for the fans. I try to do my best, like always.
More to come.

Norman Reedus has teased ‘Ballerina’ will have a “different fighting style” to ‘The Walking Dead’.The 55-year-old actor - who fronted AMC’s beloved drama series as Daryl Dixon - will be joining the ‘John Wick’ universe with its upcoming spin-off ‘Ballerina’, and has explained the film’s action sequences will differ greatly to those seen in ‘The Walking Dead’.During an interview with Collider, Reedus said: “It’s a different fighting style, totally. “‘The Walking Dead’s very sloppy, this is very choreographed and a lot of people put it together to make it safe and look spectacular. “I’m pretty good with weapons after all this time, but it’s always a math problem, even on the TV show. Everything’s math. The fighting’s math. You show an arrow, bend out of frame, you come up without the arrow digitally, and you show another arrow. There’s a math there.

From the World of John Wick: Ballerina cut a fight scene between Winston (Ian McShane) and Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas), and McShane is not happy about it. Set between John Wick 3 and 4, the upcoming spinoff brings Keanu Reeves back to the franchise, following de Armas' assassin, a girl who witnessed her father's death and became involved in the underground world. The movie, which will hit the theaters on June 6, 2025, will also feature the familiar faces of Charon (Lance Reddick) and The Director (Anjelica Huston).

Winston’s confirmed role as a mentor and father figure in the upcoming Ballerina spinoff movie makes a popular John Wick fan theory much less likely to come true. I’m sure the fandom surrounding that billion dollar franchise in the name of ‘John Wick’ will be delighted to know that its lead star is actively campaigning for another sequel.

Here’s what Keanu Reeves has to say about his hopes and fears for one more ‘John Wick’ installment.
Keanu Reeves’ “Heart” Wants To Do John Wick But His “Knees” Might Object
Remember that phrase, one is not getting any younger? Well, we can barely expect Reeves at 60 to pull off the same incredible moves he’s managed to do so far in the high octane action franchise.
Let’s just say that his gun-slinging and sword-wielding character works overtime and Reeves’ body may no longer be able to keep up.

Ballerina's Ana de Armas details how her character differs from John Wick. Ballerina is a John Wick spinoff film that follows the story of a female assassin named Eve Macarro who seeks revenge for her father's death. While John Wick has previously had a spinoff television series with The Continental, Ballerina will be the first feature film spinoff within the franchise, which has thus far included four films. Ballerina features a leading cast including de Armas in the lead role and Keanu Reeves returning as John Wick, with a supporting cast that includes Norman Reedus, Ian McShane, and Anjelica Houston.
In an interview with Collider, de Armas explains how her Ballerina lead stands out from John Wick. The actor began by noting the similarities between Ballerina and the rest of the John Wick franchise, saying that "there are some trademarks in the style of the fights in John Wick.

The John Wick universe keeps growing, and Ballerina will take us deeper into that world, as we have already confirmed in our earlier reports. McShane also mentioned that Winston’s mysterious nature would remain intact. Even by the end of the film, viewers won’t learn much more about him:

Keanu Reeves' recent updates about the state of John Wick 5 seemed discouraging, but it also set up the perfect way for him to return. Ever since the ending of John Wick: Chapter 4, in which John seemingly died, fans have been wondering if Keanu Reeves will return to the titular role, or if the franchise will nominate a new character to take his place. Reeves is certainly a popular lead for the franchise - all the John Wick movies have grossed a combined $1 billion at the worldwide box office (via Box Office Mojo). Reeves' return would almost certainly be lucrative, and now it may be possible.
In a new update about John Wick 5, Keanu Reeves said that while his heart wants to reprise his role again, his knees can't take the abuse of the stunt work. Reeves did turn 60 years old in 2024, so it's no surprise that his age is catching up with him.

This June, the John Wick universe expands with the release of ‘Ballerina,’ featuring Ana de Armas in the lead role of Eve Macarro.
Unlike the bone-crunching brawls synonymous with Keanu Reeves’ portrayal of John Wick, ‘Ballerina’ introduces a new flavor of action, blending the grace of a ballerina with the franchise’s signature fight choreography.
In a recent chat with Erick Massoto from Collider at Ccxp in Brazil, de Armas shared insights into her role.

The first three movies in the John Wick franchise are preparing to head to a new streaming home. After it debuted in 2014, the franchise has exploded into a genuine media giant. Alongside John Wick's various spin-offs, The Continental, Ballerina, and Under the High Table, the movie has already earned three sequels and a fourth that is set to release in the coming years.
It famously stars Keanu Reeves as the reluctant assassin Wick, while he attempts to butcher the High Table. The intense action scenes, compelling characters, and detailed world-building have contributed to its international acclaim, though it has never managed to win any major awards. While Reeves remains the undisputed star, other characters have earned attention through the spin-offs and more are poised to fill in this original world. The first three movies will join Chapter 4 on Hulu on January 1, 2025.
Keanu Reeves' feature film career began in 1986 with the sports movie Youngblood.

People keep asking if Keanu Reeves is back (in John Wick) and, unfortunately, it seems he really does have an answer.
Speaking to CBS News in a recent interview alongside Sonic the Hedgehog 3 director Jeff Fowler, The Matrix star was asked about the state of his vengeance-driven hitman in the neo-noir film franchise.

Fowler jumped in, joking that Reeves will portray the animal cartoon character for the next 20 years instead: “Which is why you can voice Shadow for, like, decades to come. No physical limitations! Just your voice.”

Keanu Reeves recently told CBS News that he’s not sure his body will be able to withstand another “John Wick” movie. The action icon has starred in four “John Wick” movies, which have grossed more than $1 billion combined, and he’ll reprise the eponymous assassin in next year’s spinoff movie “Ballerina.” But as far as “John Wick 5” is concerned, that might depend on the health of Reeves’ knees.

Keanu Reeves isn't sure his body could cope with the demands of a fifth ‘John Wick’ movie. The 60-year-old actor has starred as the titular ace assassin in the action franchise for 10 years since the first film came out in 2014, with 'John Wick: Chapter 4' coming out in March 2023.Keanu loves portraying the character but he doesn't think he could cope with the stunt demands of another outing.During an appearance on ‘CBS This Morning’, Reeves said: “You can never say never, but my knees right now are saying, ‘You can’t do another ‘John Wick’.“So, my heart does, but I don’t know if my knees can do it.”In ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’, Keanu's alter ego was seemingly killed off after a duel with his friend Caine - as played by Donnie Yen.After the movie - which also starred Bill Skarsgard, Laurence Fishburne,...

Deadwood is still considered one of the best Western television series of all time, attributed in no small part to the historical accuracy depicting the events that shaped the real frontier town of Deadwood. The show follows Sheriff Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) and saloon-owner Al Swearengen (Ian McShane), two real figures in Deadwood's origin story. It was also populated by some of the Wild West's most enduring icons, like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. Deadwood blended truth with fiction to tell an exciting narrative about the hardships and opportunities of the mining town.
Even though Deadwood was canceled after 3 seasons, there's no denying it's a well-documented and researched series that offers a glimpse into the harsh realities of life in the American West. The creators, writers, and actors took the time to be as historically accurate wherever possible while also applying creative license to embellish characters who were...

‘Ballerina’ director Len Wiseman has insisted Ana De Armas’ Eve Macarro is more than just a “female John Wick”.The 36-year-old actress stars as the budding assassin in the upcoming ‘John Wick’ spin-off movie 'From the World of John Wick: Ballerina', though the filmmaker has now emphasised the character is much more than simply a gender-swapped version of Keanu Reeves’ famed hitman. In a video featurette unveiled at the 2024 Comic Con Experience (Ccxp) in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Wiseman explained: “This is not a female John Wick. This is a story about Eve coming into it from the beginning.”The ‘Underworld’ director admitted ‘Ballerina’ was a “challenge” to make, but insisted audiences would be impressed with the action and De Armas’ performance when the movie hits cinemas in June 2025. He teased: "It was a challenge. But a hell of a lot of fun. The action is incredible. “Fans are...

Lionsgate has revealed a short teaser for the upcoming John Wick spin-off flick Ballerina, set to release next summer.
Frame it anyway you want, but From The World Of John Wick: Ballerina has a bit of a PR job on its hands. It’s got to convince potential audiences that a visit to the cinema will guarantee them the same level of high-quality action and thrills that they’d get from a mainline John Wick movie, and it’s been bumpy up to this point.
Far be it from me to talk down a movie’s chances before it arrives, but the public perception of reshoots often leads to the assumption that a film’s in trouble. The extensive reshooting of Ballerina means that chatter around the film is already focusing on whether it’s doomed or not.
Still: in the hands of Chad Stahelski (and co-director David Leitch), the...

Lionsgate is bringing light in darkness, unveiling a character poster for Ana de Armas’ Eve Macarro, the titular ballerina of the upcoming John Wick spin-off movie, adding to the already peak anticipation for this expansion. Following their Ccxp presentation Sunday, Lionsgate also released a new extended look featurette examining the film.
As you can see on the poster, Eve is tatted up, with one notable phrase standing out above the rest: Lux in Tenebris, which is Latin for Light in Darkness. That might feel a little on the nose, but it does give us a better glimpse into her psyche – especially when she’s got a gun in her hand. The poster has incredible coloring to it, too, which plays off of the trailer quite nicely. Check it out:

"This is not a female John Wick." So says director Len Wiseman at the start of the freshly dropped Ccxp behind the scenes look at his upcoming actioner Ballerina, the latest off-shoot from the John Wick universe. But while that's certainly true — this movie is set to represent the introduction point for Ana De Armas' Eve Macarro, the Ruska Roma trained dancing assassin who'll be bringing a whole new meaning to the expression 'bullet ballet' in Lionsgate's hotly anticipated John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum and Chapter 4 midquel — it doesn't mean the ever-expanding Jwu's latest lead is any less formidable than Keanu Reeves' Baba Yaga. Quite the opposite in fact. Just check out the featurette below to see what we mean:
Much of the emphasis here is on how Ballerina is set to expand the Wickiverse, with the likes of franchise godhead Chad Stahelski, director Wiseman, and the late, great...

"You have no idea what you just walked into..." Lionsgate has launched a new promo trailer for the action spin-off titled Ballerina, the next John Wick movie that's not actually a John Wick movie. This new promo comes direct from Ccxp in São Paulo - featuring behind-the-scenes footage in addition to some awesome movie footage. Ana de Armas stars as Eve, an assassin trained in the traditions of the Ruska Roma getting revenge hunting the murderers of her family. The same character was previously portrayed by Unity Phelan in 2019's John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and this takes place before Chapter 4. The superb supporting cast includes Ian McShane, Anjelica Huston, Keanu Reeves, Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Norman Reedus. With an appearance by Lance Reddick shot before he passed away. This is much better than the first trailer a few months ago, presenting a better look at what hopefully going...

A new poster is unveiled for Ballerina at Ccxp in Brazil, teasing how Ana de Armas' assassin differs from Keanu Reeves' John Wick. Serving as the first movie spinoff of the John Wick franchise, Ballerina follows de Armas' Eve as she seeks revenge following the murder of her family. The Continental: From the World of John Wick, receives a disappointing season 2 update from its producer. Action movie legend Jason Statham's 2008 sci-fi thriller impresses on its new streaming debut, just four days after switching platforms. Statham shot to fame when he was cast in the role of Bacon in Guy Ritchie's directorial debut, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and paired with him again for a leading role in Snatch. The critical and commercial success of the movies led to him starring in The Transporter trilogy and movies like Crank, The Italian Job remake, Hummingbird, and Safe, further cementing him as one of Hollywood's leading action stars.
Statham has continued to carve out a niche in the action-thriller genre, with a few showings against type, such as a supporting role in the romantic drama London, and a memorable co-starring turn in the action-comedy Spy. Did Keanu Reeves’ The Matrix affect John Wick? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Keanu Reeves revealed how lessons from the Wachowskis’ sci-fi masterpiece spilled into the creation of everyone’s favorite assassin saga. According to Reeves, The Matrix’s DNA—from its intricate world-building to its deep philosophical roots—helped shape the high-stakes, morally coded world of John Wick.
Speaking to Wired alongside John Wick director Chad Stahelski, Reeves didn’t hold back. He credited the Wachowskis with teaching him the importance of “attention to detail, world-building, and having ideas as nourishment in your entertainment.” Those elements, he noted, are central to John Wick: Chapter 4. With a twist, the movie explores themes of freedom, choice, and consequences. “John Wick’s got a cool thing because everyone is bad,” Reeves explained. “But they’re also super moral… there’s a code. You root for John Wick.”

Jason Statham's $75 million sci-fi action movie remake is getting a new streaming home in December. Earlier in 2024, Statham enjoyed one of his biggest box office successes in years, when his politically charged, John Wick-inspired action film The Beekeeper unexpectedly took in $152 million worldwide. Statham may now have a new franchise on his hands, as director David Ayer has hinted that The Beekeeper 2 could happen.
Statham has been a reliable action stalwart for years, thanks to films like The Beekeeper, as well as high-profile projects like The Meg and Fast & Furious, and more cult-friendly fare like Crank and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. The star indeed boasts a long filmography filled mostly with action-packed titles, many of which are available on streaming platforms, allowing for at-home exploration of every nook and cranny of Statham's lengthy resume.
