‘Dune: Propehcy’ is the latest expansion of the Dune cinematic universe. The show debuted as an HBO Original on November 17, 2024, after originally being planned for Max. It received a 70% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with praise for the performances of Emily Watson and Olivia Williams but criticism for lacking the excitement of Denis Villeneuve’s films.

The show’s premiere attracted 1.2 million viewers, growing to 2.1 million the next day. By December 19, 2024, the premiere episode had drawn 15 million viewers across Max’s coverage areas.

Due to its overall successful launch, the show was quickly renewed for a second season, and now the star of the show, Emily Watson has provided us with an update regarding the start of the filming.

Watson said that filming for the second season will likely begin in the fall, but she doesn’t know anything about Valya’s story and is just as excited as the fans.

The “Dune” prequel series, set more than 10,000 years before the events of Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” movies, follows the origins of the Bene Gesserit, the secretive order of powerful witches that influence Arrakis’ politics behind the scenes.

Inspired by the novel “Sisterhood of Dune” by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, the series follows the leader of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, Valya Harkonnen (played by Emily Watson), and Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams), who team up to combat forces that threaten humankind.

Both are ancestors from long ago of the evil House Harkonnen, which betrays Paul Atreides and his father in the “Dune” movies. Mark Strong plays Emperor Javicco Corrino and Sarah-Sofie Boussnina is his daughter Princess Ynez.

The series will return for a second season, showrunner Alison Schapker announced at a press conference Thursday. The renewal comes a few days ahead of the show’s first-season finale, which debuts Dec. 22 on HBO and Max.

According to HBO, the premiere episode of Dune: Prophecy has racked up 15 million viewers worldwide on Max since its Nov. 17 debut.

With so many people running hither and thither, some might get overlooked, but that would be a mistake. Believe it or not, we've arrived at the penultimate episode of the first season of Dune: Prophecy. Yep, there is only one more episode left in this six-episode season.

Some fans have written off the show as too short to be worth investing in, and there are points in this journey where I've thought that another episode or two could have helped. But I also want to applaud Dune: Prophecy for making the most of the time it's been alotted. A ton happened in each episode and continues to happen here.

Big things are about to happen on Dune: Prophecy, as the HBO prequel series enters the back half of its six-episode season this Sunday. That’s the buzz from several cast members and an executive producer who cited the fourth episode as a favorite.

The official synopsis for the episode “Twice Born” tells us that after nearly all the acolytes have the same nightmare, Reverend Mother Tula (Olivia Williams) attempts to understand the origins of their dreams. Mother Superior Valya meanwhile sets in motion her plan to redeem House Harkonnen.

The Rotten Tomatoes score for Dune: Prophecy has taken a turn for the negative. The HBO series is the latest installment in the new live-action science fiction franchise adapted from the classic 1965 Frank Herbert novel which kicked off with Denis Villeneuve's 2021 movie Dune and his 2024 sequel Part Two. Dune: Prophecy is based on the 2012 novel Sisterhood of Dune, but several changes have been made for the HBO adaptation, such as the character of Desmond Hart. The story of Dune: Prophecy is set 10,000 years before the Dune films, and follows Valya Harkonnen as she leads her Bene Gesserit and attempts to stop a prophecy referred to as "The Reckoning." The cast of Dune: Prophecy includes Emily Watson, Travis Fimmel, Mark Strong, Olivia Williams, and Jodhi May.

The first two episodes of Dune: Prophecy revealed how Valya Harkonnen took control of the Bene Geserit and followed her as she carried out her plan to rule over the Imperium. To do this, she aims to place Princess Ynez, daughter of Emperor Corrino, on the throne. However, after surviving being swallowed by a sandworm on Arrakis, Desmond Hart is attempting to sabotage her plans.

Even though Dune: Prophecy is set 10,000 years before the life of Paul Atreides, one of his ancestors still plays a prominent role in the story. In Dune: Prophecy, Chris Mason plays Keiran Atreides, Swordmaster for House Corrino. In addition to Mason, the cast of Dune: Prophecy includes Emily Watson, Travis Fimmel, Mark Strong, Jodhi May, and Sarah-Sofi Boussnina. The first two episodes of Dune: Prophecy explores Keiran Atreides' relationship with several characters, specifically members of House Corrino, played by Strong, May, and Boussnina.

The story of Dune: Prophecy follows Valya Harkonnen, who leads the Bene Gesserit, as she plans to take control of the Imperium. To do this, she recruits Princess Ynez Corrino, heir to the Imperium, to her sisterhood. However, Keiran Atreides' role within House Corrino, specifically his relationship with Ynez, could disrupt Valya's plans. Furthermore, Dune: Prophecy episode 2 also reveals that Keiran is a spy for the rebellion.

Episode 2 of Dune: Prophecy closed out with a face-off between what are widely viewed as the show's most interesting characters, and it looks like the shocking developments that followed have taken their toll on Mother Superior Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson).

Towards the end of "Two Wolves," Valya returned to Salusa Secundus to find herself confronted by the enigmatic Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), who had previously admitted to using his strange pyrotechnic abilities to murder both Revered Mother Kasha (Jinhae) and the young Pruwet Richese (Charlie Hodson-Prior).

Upon learning that Hart - who apparently survived being swallowed by a sandworm on Arrakis - had made it his mission to wipe out the Sisterhood entirely, Valya uses "the Voice" to command the soldier to plunge his own dagger into his throat. Incredibly, Hart manages to resist the order.

"I always wondered what your greatest fear would be," he responds. "Now I have seen it.

Desmond Hart is perhaps the most intriguing character so far in Dune: Prophecy, played by Travis Fimmel, who perfectly embodies the seasoned warrior. In addition to Fimmel, the cast of Dune: Prophecy includes Emily Watson, Mark Strong, and Jodhi May. In just the first two episodes of Dune: Prophecy, Fimmel's Desmond successfully persuades Strong and May's characters, the Emperor and Empress of the Imperium, to side with him. On the other hand, Desmond also frightens Watson's Valya Harkonnen, the powerful Mother Superior of the Bene Gesserit.

In Dune: Prophecy episode 1, Desmond is introduced as a warrior who has done several tours on the desert planet Arrakis, the only survivor of a recent attack on the desert planet. However, it is later revealed that Desmond was swallowed by a sandworm following the attack. Somehow, Desmond managed to survive and reveals his mysterious new power at the end of Dune: Prophecy...

“Dune: Prophecy” debuted to a lukewarm audience, on par with “The Penguin.”

The series premiere of “Dune: Prophecy” brought in 1.2 million viewers across HBO and Max on Sunday, according to Warner Bros. Discovery internal data. Viewership for the debut episode of “Dune: Prophecy” was on par with “The Penguin,” whose series premiere scored 1.4 million cross-platform viewers on a Thursday, before “The Batman” spinoff series moved to Sundays.

Viewership for the debut episode of “Dune: Prophecy” saw a 75% uptick the day after its premiere, growing to reach 2.1 million viewers across platforms.

“The Penguin,” which aired its finale just a week before “Dune: Prophecy” took over HBO’s coveted Sunday night spot, grew to 2.1 million viewers for its finale, marking a series high. Its series premiere went on to draw 18 million viewers in the U.

HBO dives into the world of the Bene Gesserit with Dune: Prophecy, which premiered on Sunday, November 17, 2024. The series takes place 10,000 years before Dune and a century after the war against AI that led to the banning of thinking machines. Dune: Prophecy explores the creation of the Bene Gesserit, what motivates the Sisterhood, and their use of eugenics that will ultimately lead to the creation of Paul Atreides (played by Timothee Chalamet in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films).
