English adventure and detective novelist, some of whose works have been filmed (most famously "The Four Feathers" and "Fire Over England"). He was a Liberal Member of Parliament from 1906 to 1910 and served as a Major in Naval Intelligence during World War I, setting up counter-espionage networks in Spain and Mexico.
