The Hollywood Reporter has come out with an update on the long gestating biopic on the 80's rock band Motley Crue, based on their New York Times Bestselling Book, The Dirt. They state that the project, originally started at Paramount Pictures, has found a new home at Netflix. Jeff Tremaine, director of the Jackass movies, is slated to direct. The band will be producers for the film.
Love them or hate them, Motley Crue have an interesting story to tell. From opening the book with an act that I cannot describe here apart from stating that Tommy Lee would need an umbrella, to details of the time Vince Neil was involved in a car accident that killed the passenger in the car with him, to Tommy Lee's home movies, and the break up and reunion of the band, if the movie finds a way to capture the essence of the book,...

The Film Society of Lincoln Center has today announced the fourth edition of Art of the Real, their essential showcase for boundary-pushing nonfiction film, scheduled to take place April 20 – May 2. Billed as “a survey of the most vital and innovative voices in nonfiction and hybrid filmmaking,” this year’s showcase features an eclectic, globe-spanning host of discoveries, including seven North American premieres and eight U.S. premieres.
“In our fourth year we’ve put an emphasis on placing works by first-time and emerging filmmakers alongside established names, with the aim to highlight the experimentation happening across generations, and to trace a new trajectory of documentary art that points to its promising future,” said Film Society of Lincoln Center Programmer at Large Rachael Rakes, who organized the festival with Director of Programming Dennis Lim.

I’ve been lucky to have never used painkillers whether as a result of high pain tolerance or simply not having experienced enough to deem it necessary. I know people who have, though, and it is a godsend at times whether opium-based or not. So I couldn’t blindly say Oxycontin and Dilaudid should be outlawed. Morphine has always seemed so commonplace that any prescription drug compared to it has brought along a stigma of “good” rather than “bad” for me despite heroin also being a close sibling. It therefore took be by surprise when the whole opioid scare began to cultivate insane fears on behalf of patient and doctor alike. Can you truly call an effective drug dangerous just because a few bad apples abuse it?

Remember Dr. Max Jacobson, who prescribed powerful amphetamines to such celebrity clients as President John F. Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe and Truman Capote, among many others, before having his license revoked in 1975? He was nicknamed “Dr. Feelgood,” a term that has become such a part of our lexicon that Eve Marson’s documentary Dr. Feelgood: Dealer or Healer? isn’t about Jacobson at all. It’s about the more recent case of Dr. William Hurwitz, a Virginia physician who served nearly five years in prison for drug trafficking after prescribing countless thousands of powerful opiate painkillers to his devoted patients. Unlike the courts,...

Richie Sambora won't be joining the Bon Jovi tour in 2017, choosing instead to continue spending time with his daughter, Ava, a source close to the rocker tells People. "Richie's schedule is busier now than ever, except a lot of it is with his family and around those he truly loves," the source says. Sambora is not touring with Bon Jovi for "the same reasons" he opted to leave the band in 2013, the source says. "He wants to spend quality time with Ava," his 18-year-old daughter with ex-wife Heather Locklear, says the source, especially now that she is in college. The legendary guitarist,...

Johnny Rotten grabs the microphone and lurches forward, his pimply face grinning into the camera. Next to him, Steve Jones is miming (or mocking) guitar-hero moves, while Sid Vicious hunches over his bass, surly as ever. Chicago – In receiving the official Badasss Award at the 2015 Chicago International Movies & Music Fest (CIMMFest), legendary rock documentary maker Julien Temple simply said, “Badass is not a phrase we use in England. I’ve never been called a badass, I prefer ‘enfant terriblé,’ with a hope toward ‘monstre sacré.’”
And so it goes with one of the most prolific and influential rock documentarians in cinema history, with the whole evolution of the music form contained in his associations with The Kinks, the Clash (through Joe Strummer), the Rolling Stones and the Sex Pistols. What began as a student obsession with the discovery of the Sex Pistols in the 1970s, fueled a lifelong pursuit of rock documentary truth, feature film adventure and music video stylings. Julien Temple has provided the sights and the sounds.

Julien Temple, with his numerous music documentaries behind him - many involving his pals, The Sex Pistols - may be no stranger to the rock documentary, but there is nothing quite like his new film, The Ecstasy of Wilko Johnson. For one, even though the film is about his dear friend Wilko Johnson, with its meditation on life, death, and the meaning we assign to this thing we call living, Ecstasy is Temple's most personal film to date. The project arose upon receiving the tragic news that his good friend Wilko Johnson, former Dr. Feelgood front man, had been told he had only 10 months to live. His initial interviews with Johnson had less to do with making a film than they did documenting the final...

This movie may have saved my life. Let me explain. Not too long ago, Wilko Johnson was told he would die. The musician, a co-founder of pioneering British pub-rock band Dr. Feelgood, received a diagnosis of inoperable, terminal pancreatic cancer. As you might imagine, it sent his world a-spinning. But after giving it some thought, he declined chemotherapy, which might extend his life a couple of months, and chose to enjoy what little time he had left, come what may. For him, that meant (mostly) making more music. His decision forms the basis of The Ecstasy of Wilko Johnson, a new documentary by Julien Temple that begins from a point of bleakness and quickly expands into a thing of grace and beauty. And, as it...

After being diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer in early 2013, Wilko Johnson says that doctors have "cured" him. The 67-year-old was originally given just a few months to live and chose to opt out of chemotherapy. But after a massive surgery to remove a tumor this year, the actor and former Dr. Feelgood guitarist says that he no longer has cancer. "It was an 11-hour operation," he explained to BBC News at the Q Awards in London. "This tumor [was] the size of a baby. Anyway, they got it all. They cured me." The Game of Thrones actor admitted that he thought that his farewell tour last year "was going to be the last thing I ever did" before going to see...

Happy 4th of July, my fellow Americans! Been a terrific six months for new music. Below are some of my favorite album releases that deserve early kudos at the half-way mark.
The War on Drugs: Lost in the Dream (Secretly Canadian)
Six months in and the Philly-based quartet The War on Drugs' third long player -- Lost in the Dream -- is their best and one of the best releases of 2014. Even with Kurt Vile leaving in 2011 for solo frontiers, Adam Granduciel soldiered on with his bandmates and crafted a superb album. Even with most of the songs clocking in over five minutes in length, and even with a rather pedestrian video (above), "Red Eyes" remains one of the catchiest indie rock tunes this side of New Order! The galloping guitar break is just sublime. Pick it up today!

The Strypes are the Essence & Spirit of rock 'n' roll. Make no mistake, these baby-faced teenagers (ages 16 - 18!) from Caven, Ireland are the most exciting thing in music this year! Did you see them rip it up on Letterman a few weeks back? Required viewing people. Feckin' eh, buy their R&B-fueled rock music and play it real Loud for your kids and tell 'em they got their Own band for the future. Then play 'em the early Stones, Yardbirds, Dr. Feelgood, The Animals, some Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Zep... Get my drift? Nope? Watch the video again, for feck's sake!

From Bad Grandpa to Dr. Feelgood. Jeff Tremaine, who recently helmed the chart-topping Bad Grandpa with Johnny Knoxville in the lead, is turning his attentions to an adaptation of Dirt, the story of legendary rock band Motley Crue. As Deadline reports, Tremaine will work off of The Dirt: Confessions of the World.s Most Notorious Rock Band, an autobiography published in 2001 that was penned by members of the band (but aided by New York Times writer Neil Strauss . because honestly, after this, what do the members of the Crue remember?) What these clips prove, however, is that the Crue story has been told . in various formats . time and again. Thanks to channels like VH1 and Palladium, classic rock acts like Motley often sit down in front of a camera to relive the "glory days," so Tremaine faces an instant challenge of tackling recognizable musicians and putting a fresh spin...

New York — Breaking up is hard to do. That is, unless you're "Mad Men," which this season has been free-and-easy in its fragmentation.
By now Peggy Olson and her radical beau are splitsville. So are Pete Campbell and wife Trudy, who caught him philandering one too many times.
Twice-wed Roger Sterling, currently solo, saw his knotty relationship with his mom torn asunder with her death this season, and he's alienated from his daughter and grandson.
And don't forget the latest romantic entanglement of Don Draper, whose marriage to winsome Megan seemed on suicide watch as, every chance he got, he scorched the sheets with downstairs neighbor Sylvia (wife of Don's presumed friend Dr. Arnold Rosen).
The only notable coming-together: the stormy merger of Sterling, Cooper, Draper and Pryce with former rival ad agency Cutler, Gleason and Chaough, which has assembled a bickering band of ad execs only slightly more collegial than either house of Congress.

Hair metal icons Motley Crue brought their A-game to the Enmax Centre in Lethbridge, Alberta Canada April 30th and put on one of the most entertaining and elaborate stage shows I've ever seen in concert. Pole dancers, buckets of blood and a rollercoaster drum solo – everything glam rock should be and more. Disclaimer: I'm not the biggest Motley Crue fan. Sure I grew up listening to my fair share of hair metal. Nazareth, Poison – all of that stuff. But the 80's music was always a guilty pleasure and I've never been in a hurry to see these bands live in concert. So when Motley Crue was announced to play Lethbridge I was on board but still a little weary. 'Dr. Feelgood', 'Kickstart My Heart' and 'Home Sweet Home' are my favorite Crue tracks and I was pretty sure they'd get some play so I...

Game of Thrones actor Wilko Johnson is facing his final days with dignity, humor and grace. Earlier this month, the former Dr. Feelgood guitarist revealed that he was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, and that he's opted to forgo chemotherapy. Now, in a candid and poignant interview with BBC Radio 4's Front Row program, he speaks openly about learning of his prognosis, coming to terms with the twilight of his days and just how—illness, be damned—he plans to keep on rocking until the very end. (Better believe it: He's not calling off his tour, no siree.) "I noticed the symptoms a few months ago—there was this lump in my stomach," the 65-year-old musician-actor...

Earlier this month came the sad news that actor Wilko Johnson had been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer.
But despite his ailing health, the "Game of Thrones" star appears to be in good spirits, telling Radio 4's Front Row that learning of his illness has actually energized him.
The 65-year-old actor opened up to the U.K. radio station about his diagnoses and revealed that he noticed a lump in his stomach, but ignored it hoping it would go away -- sadly it did not.
"When I went in for the diagnosis and the doctor told me 'You've got cancer' it was quite plain it was an inoperable thing, there was nothing they could do," he explained, adding that when he left the doctor's office, he felt an "elation of spirit."
"You're walking along and suddenly you're vividly alive. You're looking at the trees and the sky and everything and it's just 'whoa,...

Veronica Lake, Charlie Chaplin, Christina Applegate, and the Alvin Ailey all figured prominently in last night’s Top 16 episode of So You Think You Can Dance. Okay, so Veronica Lake wasn’t actually Veronica Lake, but rather Emmy-nominated hostess Cat Deeley dropping cheeky asides about “hot water and towels” to expectant choreographers Tabitha and Napoleon.
Oh, and the Charlie Chaplins were actually our Top 16 dancers in mustachioed drag, part of a Tyce Diorio group number that left me as cold as a meat locker (maybe it’s because I’m generally opposed to routines where I can’t tell one...

Fox has House. ABC has Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. CBS has A Gifted Man. And NBC wishes it still had ER. So what about a medical drama on The CW? Well, it launched Hart of Dixie this season, but that show is slightly more focused on small-town relationships than urgent medical issues (“Coming up next on Hart of Dixie, somebody is bitten by a tick!”).
So The CW just ordered a pilot called First Cut* from 90210 writer Jennie Snyder Urman and executive producer Dan Jinks (Pushing Daisies). The pitch: “Glad to leave her nerdy past behind for a...

Like many a warm-blooded American male who spends a little time here and there on the Internet, I can’t say that I haven’t been witness to the world of adult entertainment. And like any major money-generating form of entertainment, there’s a wide array of such films, videos and images out there in the world. Some is classy and sexy, while some involves animals. Ewww. That said, like the mainstream world of film, even pornography has its superstars. And even those superstar personas have real (or mostly real, at least physically) people behind them. So when a documentary seeks to explore what’s happening in the minds of those who would disrobe and perform a wide variety of sexual acts on camera for money, it’s hard not to be just a little bit interested. When such a documentary presents a trailer as sleek and classy as that of Deborah Anderson’s Aroused: The Lost...

Cincinnati – Always about as subtle as a flaming, spiked sledgehammer to the sternum, Mötley Crüe mince no words with the title of their current summer tour: "30 Years of Crüe … F**k You."
And because I somehow missed out on seeing the band in their heyday, I felt it was my duty to celebrate three decades of decadence with the boys on Sunday night at the packed Riverbend Amphitheater, because, well, you never know.
Though I didn't pack a handy flask of Jim Beam in the boot of my jeans to bust out at just the right moment (that would be during "Dr. Feelgood," Fyi) and I was not sporting a full back tat of the Shout at the Devil album cover (I spotted three, in addition to countless massive Theatre of Pain inkings), I dutifully took my place among the masses tossing up the horns for 90 minutes of pyro-fueled mayhem.

A direct-to-dvd thriller starring Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank is like finding a Canadian dollar on the streets of Iowa. It’s fascinating from a “What the hell? I found a Canadian dollar in Iowa?” stand point but ultimately, you can’t use it to buy anything so how great could finding a Loonie be? That’s what The Resident is like. It’s a woeful paint-by-numbers suspense-thriller which provides too many unintentional laughs (No Watchmen’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan, don’t do that in her bathtub!) and rare moments of genuine suspense. I’m not sure what kind of dirt music video director Antti Jokinen had on Swank, but it must have been juicy.
Swank plays New York City ER doctor, Juliet Devereau, who is fresh off a split with her boyfriend. Alone and looking for an apartment, this single lady hits the classifieds hard but fails to achieve much success…...
