The third feature by director Michele Soavi—his second collaboration with producer/co-writer Dario Argento—has been called “deranged” (We Are Cult), “disturbing” (Blu-ray.com) and “long overdue for reevaluation” (Bloody Disgusting). Now it can be experienced like never before: As a global satanic cabal grows in ferocity, an unwitting young schoolteacher (Kelly Curtis—sister of Jamie Lee—in her sole genre role) is chosen to deliver the ultimate evil. Herbert Lom (Count Dracula), Mariangela Giordano (Burial Ground), and Giovanni Lombardo Radice (The House on the Edge of the Park) co-star in “a nightmarish fever dream from a visionary filmmaker” (Good Efficient Butchery), scanned in 4K from the original negative with over three hours of special features—including new interviews with Soavi and Argento—for the first time ever.

Ahead of the UK premiere of graphic and disturbing supernatural horror film The Well at FrightFest Glasgow 2024, director Federico Zampaglione talks about returning to hardcore horror, working with the late, great Giovanni Lombardo Radice and emerging from the shadow of Italian masters of the genre.
So, Federico, The Well has its UK premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival, as part of the popular FrightFest event. Are you excited?
Frightfest is the place where everything started in 2009 and it’s one of the best festivals in the world. I can’t wait to show The Well to the UK fans.
What inspired you to make the movie?
Wanting to get back on the horror horse! I deeply love this genre, because it speaks to the human soul, investigates our unknown fears and gets lost in deep darkness whilst clinging to a blade of light. The Well pushes at the most extreme emotions,...

How do Lucio Fulci fans catalogue their favorites? By number of atrocious set pieces? Or by simply weighing the entrails and moving from there? Fulci’s career is by no means limited to his gruesome peak in the late ’70s and early ’80s, but it’s sure difficult to find many who hold his ’60s spy knockoffs and westerns in as high regard as violent stoners do the likes of Zombie, The New York Ripper, and City of the Living Dead (also known as The Gates of Hell). While there’s no denying the effectiveness of the cheapjack surrealism underpinning The Beyond, most of his other gore touchstones are notable only for the extreme lengths they’re willing to go, not how far they’re capable of burrowing beyond viewers’ gag reflexes.

Since launching in 2020, Cauldron Films has quickly established itself as a boutique label to watch for cult film fans. In addition to unearthing and restoring obscurities like The Crimes of the Black Cat, American Rickshaw, and Frankenstein ’80, they’ve secured a few heavy hitters. Their most recognizable title to date is Lucio Fulci’s City of the Living Dead (originally released in the US as The Gates of Hell). Following an exclusive slipcase edition last year, a standard retail version of the 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray set is available this week.
The 1980 Italian horror film is significant for kicking off Fulci’s thematically connected Gates of Hell trilogy, followed by The Beyond and The House by the Cemetery the next year. Developed in the wake of Fulci’s success with Zombie in 1979, City of the Living Dead features more undead ghouls but this time as accoutrements rather than a centerpiece.

I didn’t enjoy Terrifier 2 very much, but I was very impressed by the performance delivered by heroine Lauren Lavera, who came off as a star on the rise – and who seemed like such a badass in her confrontation with Art the Clown, I could see her becoming a major force in the action genre, if that’s a path she’s interested in taking. As she continues on her way to stardom, Lavera has signed on to star in a supernatural thriller called The Well – and our friends at Bloody Disgusting were able to dig up some exclusive details on the project.
Federico Zampaglione (Tulpa: Demon of Desire) will be directing The Well and has also written the screenplay with producer Stefano Masi. The film will see Lavera taking on the role of Lisa Gray, a budding art restorer, who travels to a small Italian village to...

Production is set to begin next month on The Well a new supernatural horror flick from Italian director Federico Zampaglione. A budding art restorer travels to a small Italian village to bring a medieval painting back to its former glory. Little does she know she is placing her life in danger from an evil curse and a monster born of myth and brutal pain. Zampaglione has spent some time away from the horror genre but is eager to get back into it. To help him get international attention for this new flick Terrifier 2's Lauren Lavera is set to take the lead as the 'budding art restorer'. She will star along with Claudia Gerini, Giovanni Lombardo Radice, Linda Zampaglione, Jonathan Dylan King, Lorenzo...

As Baphomet opens, a Satanic cult sacrifices a naked woman while their leader Henrik Brandr promises soon they won’t have to hide in the shadows. It’s an ominous opening, only slightly marred by Brandr seeming to pronounce the ruler of Hell’s name as “Satin”.
Whatever the cult has planned involves a ranch owned by Jacob Richardson and his wife Elena (Ivy Opdyke; Hide the Monster). Brandr sends his son Askel to convince them to sell. He doesn’t manage that, but a picture of their pregnant daughter Rebecca (Rebecca Weaver) and her husband Mark (Matthan Harris) catches his eye.

Crucified (aka Everybody’s End) does sound like a slightly odd title for a movie about a post-apocalyptic world in which an epidemic has taken over and a few survivors band together to try and stay alive. But the title does get explained towards the end of the movie in an interesting turn of events.
As far as post-apocalyptic worlds go, especially in lower-budgeted movies, Crucified looks pretty good. A mix of basic CGI and using a small indoor location works well and the movies shows a dark, miserable-looking world that suits much of the movie. The filmmakers have also put in plenty of effort into the practical effects for the gore and death scenes. They are a definite highlight and by...

Set to be released on March 12, the film follows Jian (Ken Zheng), a counter-terrorism agent who blends his skills as a martial artist and clairvoyant to bring the world’s most nefarious individuals to justice. This lone wolf is forced to make an unexpected detour to Los Angeles upon receipt of the devastating news of a cover up surrounding his brother’s alleged suicide. With the reluctant help of LAPD detectives, Abby (Zima), Carl (Todd), and Captain Duke (David), the unlikely group becomes involved in the investigation. Jian and Abby fight against a high-tech criminal (Flanery) looking to exploit the brothers’ gifts in his quest for power.

With so many folks out there looking for ways to keep themselves entertained at home right now, perhaps this new batch of home media releases might have something to offer you this week. If you missed it in theaters last year, the controversial Black Christmas remake hits both Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday, and Scream Factory has put together a fourth volume in their Universal Horror Collection series, which looks like a must-own for all classic genre fans out there.
Also headed to Blu this week is The Nines, which is one of my favorite underseen films from Ryan Reynolds, as well as Cannibal Apocalypse, featuring John Saxon. We also have Glenn Danzig’s Verotika coming out on Tuesday and if you need something to keep the kiddos busy, Jumanji: The Next Level should do the trick.

Join me for a summer abroad as I check out a series of foreign films from countries that have made a big splash in the horror community. Of course, in the spirit of this column I’ll be taking a peek at movies that may not be as well-known as some of the classics from their particular country. Hopefully we’ll have a chance to find a few surprises together.
[Spoiler warning if you haven't seen StageFright.]
As I wrap up my international horror tour this summer, I’ve decided to make a return trip to Italy, the land of bloody black gloves and bad dubbing. A few months ago I tried to acquire a taste for giallo with a viewing of A Blade in the Dark, and while it didn’t fully win me over, I knew I wanted to keep exploring the subgenre. Epicureanism has come to be associated with mindless indulgence in food and sex, even if those ancient Athenians called for more restraint than you’d typically see in your average horror movie.
Countless horror films, of course, have echoed cultural anxieties surrounding sex, but that other physiological need, food, is also a common ingredient. Poor impulse control is at the heart of every slasher film—usually the perp acting on his, but also the risk-taking behaviors of his victims. And it’s not much of a stretch to consider that there’s a genetic component to this, whether manifested in psychopathy or an inability to keep the fridge door shut.
According to a Bloomberg report, 2015 was the first year Americans spent more on dining out than on groceries, as at-home food prep shows proliferate and the real-life horror that is the obesity epidemic shaves years off our lives. Luckily, amidst...

Our series on remakes continues with a film which is more of a duplication than an actual remake. This week, Cinelinx looks at The Omen (2006).
If you’ve seen the original version of The Omen (1976) and then you watch the remake from 2006, you have to ask “Why did they even bother?” The remake was barely even a remake. It was a shot-for-shot, scene -for-scene copy of the original. Released on the 30th anniversary of the original, it offered absolutely nothing new, except a more modern cast and some mediocre CGI effects. Other than that, this is a completely unnecessary, gratuitous photo-copy of the first version.
About this film Rolling Stone Magazine wrote, “Not since Gus Van Sant inexplicably directed a shot by shot remake of Hitchcock’s Psycho has a thriller been copied with so little point or impact”. Recently, we did a dissection of the Van Sant remake of...

The late ‘80s signaled the end of my first golden age of horror. Which is to say two things: adulthood beckoned, and horror films – especially slashers - were running low on inspiration (remember the early ‘90s wasteland? Brr.). However, looking across the waters, some veteran Italian filmmakers weren’t throwing in the towel yet. Michele Soavi’s Stage Fright (1987) stands apart from the crowd because it proved that not only was the beaten and flogged sub-genre alive, it was still capable of surprising fans with enough fresh blood pumping through its weary veins to make you sit up and notice. Just when you thought you couldn’t survive another hack ‘em up, Stage Fright made you a believer again.
Stage Fright, Aka StageFright: Aquarius, Deliria, and Bloody Bird, whatever you’d like to call it – is a triumphant call back to a half decade earlier when slashers were full of kinetic energy,...

The Three Sisters (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by Repeated ViewingWhile we wait for Dáire McNab’s The Three Sisters to be released in the States, the soundtrack has been released via CD & Digital Format earlier this month. Gloria doesn't believe cannibalism exists, but that notion is ripped to shreds when she and her companions are targeted as meals for a rain forest tribe that's been pushed over the edge. Serving as an inspiration for Eli Roth's The Green Inferno and still leaving viewers feeling queasy nearly 34 years after its initial release, Umberto Lenzi's 1981 Italian exploitation horror film, Cannibal Ferox, was once banned in 31 countries but has received more love over the years as more and more people have discovered its palpable practical effects and uncompromising storytelling.

Locked inside a theater overnight with a murderous madman, a musical’s cast will have no trouble portraying real fear, but this type of method acting could be the death of them all. In 1987′s StageFright, the actors unknowingly performing beside a murderer in an owl mask could break a lot more than a leg in perhaps their final performance on this earth. The Blu-ray upgrade of StageFright‘s uncut and uncensored camera negative is making its Us debut this fall from Blue Underground.

One of our favorite Diy Monster Makers, Spain's Freakland Shop, has joined forces with original Jason Voorhees portrayer Ari Lehman for a Limited Edition bust depicting the first ever screen appearance of the legendary Friday the 13th boogeyman. Measuring approximately 7 inches high, the hand-sculpted and hand-painted polyresin statuette depicts Jason at the moment he bursts from beneath the still waters of Crystal Lake – that unforgettable shock that helped kick-start one of horror's most enduring franchises. The bust comes complete with one of two collector's card options (buyer's choice), both signed by Lehman in silver marker. Get over to Freakland Shop pronto before they're gone... and don't forget to check out their equally cool bust depicting the gruesome “drill scene” from Lucio Fulci's The Gates of Hell, signed by actor John Morghen!

If you missed our previous Diy Monster Makers features on the amazing hand-sculpted collectibles from Freakland Shop, it's high time you got onboard with their latest creations... like this awesome polyresin replica depicting one of the most notorious scenes from Lucio Fulci's gore epic City of the Living Dead, known stateside as The Gates of Hell. That's right, we're talking about the infamous power-drill-through-the-head death of poor “Bob” (Giovanni Lombardo Radice, a.k.a. John Morghen) at the hands of his lady-friend's vengeful father... here's that scene, if you need a refresher: The hand-sculpted, hand-painted vinyl busts (roughly 5” tall) are limited to a run of 500 numbered units, each accompanied by one of two styles of movie cards, autographed by Morghen himself. Visit Freakland Shop for ordering info, and be sure to check out our previous feature to see more of their excellent horror replicas.

As Bruce Campbell proved to us all last week when he debunked the previous week’s announcement that Army of Darkness 2 was on its way, news of impending horror sequels should probably always be taken with a grain of salt. Countless sequels have been announced over the years, only to drop off the face of the earth shortly thereafter. It’s just the nature of the game, in a fickle business like the movie-making one.
Back in August we took a look at ten of those sequels that we’re still waiting to see, and today I’ve got ten more for ya. They were all planned, they were all announced, but none of them ever actually happened!
