“Beautiful Ugly,” a new novel from author Alice Feeney, will be adapted for the screen.

Hidden Pictures, the production company founded in 2022 by Todd Lieberman, has acquired the rights to the book and plans to develop a film version of the psychological thriller.

“Beautiful Ugly” was published on Jan. 14 and landed on the New York Times best-seller list in its first week. The story follows a writer named Grady Green who happens to be on the phone with his wife Abby when she slams on her car brakes and gets out of the vehicle before the call cuts to silence. He eventually finds her car by the cliff’s edge; the driver’s door is open and her cell is there, but Abby is nowhere to be found. A year later, while still bereft, he travels to a tiny Scottish village where he sees a woman who looks exactly like his missing wife.

Exclusive: Jack Patten is quickly making a name for himself in Hollywood. The Australian actor, a 2023 graduate of the National Institute of Dramatic Arts in Sydney, has landed his first TV role, and it’s the lead of an on-air series, MGM+’s Robin Hood.

The casting follows Patten’s similarly impressive first Hollywood booking on the upcoming Patrick Hughes film for Netflix, War Machine, which landed the actor US representation by Gersh. Todd Lieberman’s Hidden Pictures, which produces both War Machine and Robin Hood, cast Patten in the movie and then suggested him for Robin Hood.

From Lionsgate TV and showrunner John Glenn, Robin Hood is described as a sweeping, romantic adventure, a modern take of the classic tale that brings historical authenticity, psychological depth, and a heightened focus on the relationship between Rob and Marian.

Exclusive: In the first major sale of the year, Lionsgate has pre-emptively purchased the big concept earthquake short story After Shock for a sum in the mid-six-figure purchase-price range. At the center of all this is Brandon Sklenar, poised to headline movies after a breakout turn in It Ends With Us and the imminent second season of Taylor Sheridan’s 1923, in which he plays Spencer Dutton.

Four suitors chased the After Shock deal with different actors attached and the deal closed within 24 hours of when Verve put it in the marketplace. Lionsgate insiders claim the number was lower.

The 35-page short story written by Aaron Jayh will be produced by Todd Lieberman and Alex Young for Hidden Pictures and Scott Glassgold for his newly launched film banner 12:01 Films. Sklenar is also expected to be involved in a producing capacity.

The year-end holidays can be one of the most lucrative corridors of the year in terms of being able to support multiple movies in the marketplace if a title clicks with its target audience.

Next year will put that theory to the test in a major way considering that James Cameron returns to theaters with threequel Avatar: Fire and Ash (Disney). There’s also the family pic The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants (Paramount). Both of those films open on Dec. 19.

MGM+ has ordered the new drama series Robin Hood, in which the classic tale of the roguish outlaw hero who stole from the rich and gave to the poor gets reimagined into a “smart, sweeping, romantic adventure.” The series comes from Lionsgate Television, with showrunner John Glenn and producer-director Jonathan English (The Librarians: The Next Chapter) at the helm.
