His Dark Materials and Help writer Jack Thorne has been recognized for Outstanding Contribution to Writing at tonight’s 29th Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Awards (WGGBAs), with Russell T Davies, Emerald Fennell and Armando Iannucci also taking home gongs.
The prolific Thorne, who delivered this year’s Edinburgh Television Festival MacTaggart lecture, was presented with the prestigious trophy by His Dark Materials exec and Bad Wolf Co-Founder Jane Tranter, following a two-decades-long career in which he has penned some of the UK’s most critically-acclaimed hits including This is England, Shameless and The Virtues.
“I think all writers would say that being given something from other writers is the greatest honor,” said Thorne. “I don’t think I’ve really contributed anything much in this strange career, and writing is a really strange job, but I’m grateful, and slightly anxious, to now have this award to live up to.

Rik Mayall wasn’t just a comedy genius, he was at the fundamental core of British comedy from the 80s’ until his untimely death. ‘Al Pacino: The Movies Behind The Man’ author and broadcaster, Mark Searby sheds light into the creative work of the man in his new book ‘Rik Mayall: Comedy Genius’.
With a career born from frustrations, opinions and political strains of the working class in the 1980s, Mayall and a motley crew of young fresh talent led the uprising of alternative comedy. Taking a lead from Punk music, they took no prisoners. It was politically incorrect, anarchic and stuck two fingers up to the establishment and furthermore, it stood for something. In its new form, Mayall and his compadres had made comedy into a vessel to speak freely and represent the feelings of a fresh, passionate and raw new generation, something that has since been remixed...

There are a couple things most brides will agree on: They want to be surrounded by the people that matter most to them on their wedding day — and they want great pictures.
For 22-year-old Kierstynn Foster Rozema, that meant taking her wedding party on a field trip to a hospital.
“It was one of my favorite moments of the entire day, to walk into that place not being there for a treatment but to be there in a celebration kind of way,” Rozema tells People.
The newlywed was 16 and a junior in high school in Grand Rapids, Michigan, when she was diagnosed with leukemia.

An Absolutely Fabulous movie is finally happening, and Helen Lederer has "every confidence" that it will be a hit.
Lederer will reprise her role as Catriona, Patsy's dim-witted magazine colleague, and will start filming her scenes this month.
"It's lovely to be invited to be in it after so long," she told Digital Spy. "I'm looking forward to seeing all the people again. It will be nice. It will be like a school reunion but where you drop in and have a laugh and go home again happy."
When asked why Absolutely Fabulous remains a hit with many people, Lederer said that she believes the show provides a little bit for everyone.
"It offers glamour, and at the same time, it offers a kind of critique," she commented. "It's tongue-in-cheek, it's a cheerful sending-up of a world that we kind of aspire to that we want to knock down. You...

We caught up with Dexter to find out what he had to say about who's playing a game, why Cristian's snog with Jasmine will have done him a world of good, why Harry is causing big problems for Nick, exactly what kind of "bellend" Marc is and much, much more...

Helen Lederer admits she has ''never been fatter'' after raiding her mini bar after filming 'Hollyoaks' scenes. The comedienne has joked she had to ''give up her vanity'' to reprise her role as midwife Mariam, admitting she sought solace in a gin and tonic and some popcorn at her hotel after shooting some hard-hitting scenes on the Channel 4 soap. When asked what she did to relax after filming emotional scenes, she exclusively told Bang Showbiz: ''I've been staying in a hotel up there which is all very jolly for me but I probably would have had a mini bar...

Helen Lederer has admitted to feeling paranoid about her inclusion in the upcoming Absolutely Fabulous movie.
The actress, who played Catriona in the show from 1992 to 2003 and again in 2012 for the show's 20th anniversary, told ITV's Lorraine that she did not know if she would feature.
"See my paranoia, my insecurities, what if everybody is in it and I'm not? I'm going down that road now," said Lederer.
Asked about Jane Horrocks possibly reprising her role as Bubble in the movie, Lederer added: "If she's had the call [and I haven't], I'm just going to deal with it."
The actress also admitted to having issues with her body image, saying: "I have been a plump person my whole life, various degrees of roundness.
"I really did book [a gastric band procedure] and then I thought of having baby food and then I was thinking I won't be able to eat and then I thought I'm insane and then I stopped.

We have a full set of housemates in Big Brother 2014 now - and they had their fair share of ridiculous audition videos (hello Helen, whose extended cut on Bit On The Side included the charming phrase: "I'm hotter than a steaming pile of s**t.") But all of this just got us reminiscing about some of our favourite VTs from over the years. We've picked out just ten of our most memorable below...
1. Bonnie Holt (Big Brother 7)
Without question, the best audition video of all time. Bonnie turned out to be shy and quieter than a mouse in the house - which she put down to not having her suitcase - but her audition video is so ridiculous and hilarious that it's almost a work of art. We don't know if we'll ever tire of watching it - from Bon's declaration that she is "sexy, and funny, and everything,...

If this summer's Emmy races are half as exciting as this spring's jockeying for Emmy category position, we're gonna have a real barnburner on our hands come August. Two weeks ago, Netflix fired the first salvo, electing to submit "Orange Is The New Black" in the comedy category after going as a drama for Golden Globes contention. Personally, I think that was the smart and correct choice and, in a perfect world, "Orange" could fill out the supporting actress field on its own. [That won't happen. But it should.] Then earlier this morning, Showtime unexpectedly announced that after three years as a drama for Emmy purposes, "Shameless" will submit as a comedy this year. I'd always advocated "Shameless" as a comedy in years past and I would put Emmy Rossum in any open field of actress contenders, regardless of category. Still, I'm not quite sure how I feel about the move in this particular season, which...

As always the case in "The Americans," "The Walk-In" focuses on lies, secrets and broken promises. This time, however, the sources and outcomes are a little different: Paige proves herself to be a spy-in-training, Elizabeth fails to deliver a letter and Stan does the Russians' dirty work.
Elizabeth's broken promise
Back in 1966, when Elizabeth is a young and unsure spy, she hangs out with Leanne to talk about babies while washing blood off the hands from a mission. Leanne already has her first baby -- the boy who is, in the present-day of "The Americans," the teenage Jared -- and has written him a letter. The idea is that if she and Emmett get killed or arrested, the letter will explain why.
Elizabeth promises to deliver that letter if necessary. And then she lets Philip impregnate her.
After the early-'80s death of Emmett and Leanne, Elizabeth now has to decide about fulfilling that promise.

From Adventure Time to Old Jack's Boat, James and Glen talk us through ten modern kids' TV shows that geek parents can enjoy too...
“Urgh, I’m so hungover. I’m going to sit in my pants and watch movies all day”
So invariably goes at least one entry on my Twitter feed every Saturday or Sunday morning. Yes, lying about all day watching TV is great but nine times out of ten when someone writes something like this, I can guarantee that they don’t have kids. For those of us with small children, the television we regularly watch throughout the day comes from a vastly different landscape. To the childless, names such as Makka Pakka, Tree Fu Tom and Yo Jo Jo may mean very little. To some us though they’ve become household names, as our lives are filled...

Never has there been a sitcom as confusing as "Super Fun Night." Ok, that's probably an exaggeration, but what a frustrating show this was in its first (and likely only) season, which wrapped on Wednesday (Feb. 19).
When the Rebel Wilson-created sitcom premiered on ABC this fall, it seemed like such a wasted opportunity. Fresh off "Bridesmaids" and "Pitch Perfect," Wilson's star was white-hot, so a sitcom built around her brand of comedy felt like a sure-fire hit. Unfortunately, it wasn't.
First, there was the issue of Wilson insisting on making her character, lawyer Kimmie Boubier, an American, forcing the actress to rely on a shaky accent. Why couldn't Kimmie just be Australian? Who knows.
Then there was the plot of the show. Originally about Kimmie and two best friends Helen-Alice (Liza Lapira) and Marika (Lauren Ash) embarking on a new fun night out each week in the hopes...

Alison Owen, managing director of Ruby Film and Television, has used her keynote speech at the BFI London Film Festival to defend the art of movie storytelling and play down the threat of the internet.
Speaking at the Curzon Soho this afternoon, Owen said: “There’s many a Cassandra touting the death of the movie industry. But is that true?
“It is crazy to say the internet is going to kill off movies… The problem is not technology per se but the management of that technology – and the lack of a pervasive business model.”
Using YouTube clips such as “Charlie bit my finger”, Owen said such content was “incredibly simple” and that “people still want good stories”.

“Blah blah blah,” did Ken just throw shade at Tim? Oh no he better not! I hope this is the episode you’ll be going home. #Rude!!! How dare you throw shade at Tim. Oh and he talks about how he has never designed for real women? All women are real women! Even if you’re designing for models; unless he only designs for drag queens which could explain his design aesthetics.
‘Project Runway’ Season 12 Episode 10 Recap:
Designers get two days for this challenge, woohoo!!! But don’t get too excited — I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a twist.
Immediately I cannot wait to see what Helen’s model will be transformed to! She’s fierce, she’s like a cross between Miranda and Timothy.

ABC has ordered "Super Fun Night," starring Rebel Wilson, to series, along with other comedies "The Goldbergs," "Back in the Game," "Mixology" and "Trophy Wife."
The half-hour "Super Fun Night" centers on Junior attorney Kimmie Boubier (Wilson) and her two best friends Helen-Alice (Liza Lapira) and Marika (Lauren Ash), who have had a standing date every Friday night for the last 13 years. They even have a motto for what they call “Friday Night Fun Night”: “Always together! Always Inside!”
However, Kimmie’s recent promotion throws a monkey wrench into the tradition. Not only is she now working with her idol, “Lady Lawyer of the Year” Felicity Vanderstone (Kelen Coleman), but she meets a dashingly handsome British attorney, Richard Lovell (Kevin Bishop), who invites her to his party at a trendy club. Something borrowed, something blue, someone faux, something new?
We saw two pretend weddings in this week’s Revenge. One was a touching beachside ceremony full of real emotion… and the other was between Jack and the woman he thinks is – but who is decidedly not – his one true love. (Pardon me if I’m feeling less than friendly toward Amanda, but she goes so rogue in this week’s episode that it makes me want to skip the middlewoman and Red Sharpie her myself. More on that later.) Victoria also goes off-book – but it’s in such spectacular fashion that...

Old Jack’s Boat. CBebbies
Aislinn Kinsella
In the brand new show Old Jack’s Boat, the title character boards his boat Rainbow and tells fun filled underwater stories to his ever attendant dog Salty. The first fifteen minute edition was based around him telling a short story about a friendly mermaid who lost her pearl earrings. The story was suitably amusing for a CBeebies show and it featured an array of wacky characters including talking sea creatures who wore clothes and helped the mermaid to locate her earrings.
The show is created by former Doctor Who producer Russell T. Davies and features an “All-Star” line-up. The cast includes Bernard Cribbins (Jack) and Freema Agyeman from Doctor Who, as well as Helen Lederer (Blackadder). It is sure to be a hit with the little ones and one or two older folks!

Chicago – Some of the finest names in modern independent cinema may be garnering their largest audiences to date when the anthology horror film, “V/H/S,” is released on October 5th. It combines five horror shorts with a “wraparound” tale in which an assortment of troublemaking vandals (including “Open Five” director Kentucker Audley) search a spooky house for a priceless VHS tape.
This segment, “Tape 56,” was directed by Adam Wingard and written by Simon Barrett, two accomplished filmmakers in their own right, who have collaborated on horror films such as “A Horrible Way to Die” and “You’re Next.” Barrett also wrote and co-produced the “V/H/S” segment entitled “The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger,” which was directed by Chicago’s own Joe Swanberg (Wingard served as photographer and sound designer). Swanberg’s film stars Helen Rogers as Emily, a young woman who attempts to show her boyfriend,...

It's all been leading up to this, folks - in an episode likely to go down in television history for sheer effed-uppedness (I'm sure there's an Emmy category for that, right?), American Horror Story laid it all out on the living room table last night in an episode simply titled "Birth" ("Afterbirth" comes next week).
Are we ready to see the edgiest show on basic cable put its blood money where its mouth is?
1984
Constance (Jessica Lange) is passed out in front of a fresh game of solitaire And an episode of Newhart. (Atta girl!) It must have been an episode that Julia Duffy wasn't in - those were real snoozers!
A blonde kid with a metal toy truck bangs around her pickled, prostrate form - the basement door opens on its own, and he goes down, truck-first. His toy rolls into the darkness. Wait, is this Tate? I guess it would be.
