Exclusive: The world premiere of Rumana Molla’s Indo-Belgian film Minimum and the UK premiere of Indian actor Anshuman Jha’s directorial debut Lord Curzon Ki Haveli will be on show at this year’s UK Asian Film Festival (Ukaff).

Prominent figures including actors Shabana Azmi and Karisma Kapoor will be feted for their roles in Indian cinema at the annual event.

Ukaff, which says it is the longest running South Asian film festival in the world, will run its 26th edition from May 2 to 12 in venues across London, Leicester and Oxford.

Mumbai, Feb 24 (Ians) Choreographer-filmmaker Farah Khan walked down the memory lane and recalled the shooting of the track ‘Satrangi Re’ in Ladakh, from the 1998 romantic thriller ‘Dil Se’, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala.

She shared how during the filming of the track she was on a drip, while Srk was wearing thin cotton clothes on the frozen lake.

In the new episode of the celebrity dance reality show, ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa’, actor Shoaib Ibrahim, who was though unwell, gave a ‘Paso Doble’ performance to the mesmerising tune of ‘Satrangi Re’, along with choreographer Anuradha Iyengar.

Farah, who originally choreographed the song, reminisced about the shooting of this song, saying that like Shoaib, she too wasn’t well at that time.

“I choreographed this song for ‘Dil Se.’ We filmed it in Ladakh during the winter. Near that frozen lake, especially for the last portion– there was literally no oxygen.

Screen writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar shared his advice for the budding talents, encouraging them to forge their own path. As seen in the latest promo, making this season even more exciting will be the presence of legends like Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, Javed Akhtar, and Kavita Krishnamurthy.

New Delhi, Aug 25 (Ians) Veteran actress Hema Malini performed a mesmerising dance, leaving everyone spellbound, during the book launch event of ‘Chal Mann Vrindavan’ in Delhi.

The Og ‘Dream Girl’ of Bollywood, Hema, who is also the Lok Sabha Bjp MP representing Mathura parliamentary constituency, is the chief editor of the book ‘Chal Mann Vrindavan’.

The song ‘Veera Raja Veera’ – the second to be released from the Mani Ratnam spectacle ‘Ponniyin Selvan: 2’ – was shared by the film’s makers on Saturday. Oscar- and Grammy-winning composer A R Rahman has composed the track, picturised on Karthi, Trisha and Shobita Dhulipala against the backdrop of warships sailing across the high seas. It is based on a traditional Shiva Stuti in Raag Adaana of the Dagarvani tradition of Dhrupad.

The track features a melodious use of the tabla and veena, both instruments complementing the ‘murkiyaan’ in the melodious voices of Kavita Krishnamurti, Shreya Ghoshal and Arman Dehlvi.

Filmmaker-actor Nandita Das on Wednesday mourned the loss of legendary music director Shantanu Mohapatra, saying it is a pity that amazing artistes like him go unnoticed.

The actress took to Twitter to express her views. 

"Another great loss. We came from the same town, Baripada. So many evenings of singing, stories and warmth. Pity, amazing artists in diff parts of the country go unnoticed by the rest of the country...world. Music director Shantanu Mohapatra no more," Nandita wrote. 

Shantanu Mohapatra passed away at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday night. He was 84 and was suffering from acute pneumonia and old-age related ailments.

The late composer has been associated with the Odia music industry for almost 60 years. He has many firsts to his credits in the field of Odia music as a composer.

Akshay Kumar recently hosted 3-day virtual music convert to raise funds for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Pm Cares Fund to help fight the coronavirus. The Sangeet Setu (the bridge of music) virtual concert took place between 10th – 12th April and brought together some of India’s biggest music stars to put on a show.

Among the star-studded list of performers were veteran singers Sudesh Bhosale, Asha Bhosle, Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu, Pankaj Udhas Suresh Wadkar, as well as Alka Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Sonu Nigam, Salim Merchant, Shaan, Kaliash Kher, Shankar Mahadevan and more who put on a spectacular show from their homes as India stood united during this difficult time.

On the 11th anniversary of 26/11 attacks, Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan paid tribute to the martyrs and victims of the heinous terror strike by reciting a special poem.

The '26/11 Stories of Strength' memorial event was attended by politicians including Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh along with Union Minister of Roads, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, who talked about the new measures taken to strengthen security, and also paid tribute to the heroes and martyrs of the 26/11 attacks. Bjp Mla Ashish Shelar, and Bjp spokesperson Shaina Nc were also present.

The forthcoming Vidya Balan-starrer Tumhari Sulu is a fun, inspirational story of a housewife who believes that she can have a life outside the walls of her home. The trailer of the film has already received immense love and appreciation, and the film has been placed on many lists, including ours, of the most anticipated releases of the year.

Besides the fact that Vidya plays the lead role of Sulu in the film, another high moment is that the film revisits one of the most iconic Bollywood songs – a recreation of Sridevi’s hit track ‘Hawa Hawai’.

Interestingly Vidya Balan was barely 5 years old when the original ‘Hawa Hawai from Mr. India released in 1987. When Vidya came on set to shoot the song with co-stars Neha Dhupia and Rj Malishka, she couldn’t help but go back in time and revisit her memory of ‘Hawa Hawai’ when she was a little girl.

Sridevi’s iconic “Hawa Hawai” from the 1987 blockbuster, Mr. India has been recreated in the forthcoming slice-of-life family film, Tumhari Sulu and the fab video premiered today.

“I am elated to have such a cult number in the film,” says director Suresh Triveni. Adding that it was their intention ‘to pay a true tribute to the original and revive it in its full glory.’

Picturized on stars Vidya Balan aka Sulu, Neha Dhupia and Rj Malishka, the song was recreated by composer Tanishk Bagchi. What is cool is that the song retains Kavita Krishnamurthy’s vocals, as the track is synonymous with her incredible rendition.

That Vidya Balan is a huge Sridevi fan is commonly known and now it seems she will be channeling one the star’s most iconic moments on screen.

Destiny will see Vidya dance to Sridevi’s chartbuster ‘Hawa Hawai’ (from the 1987 blockbuster, Mr. India) in the forthcoming slice-of-life family film, Tumhari Sulu, produced by T-Series and Ellipsis Entertainment, and directed by renowned ad-man Suresh Triveni.

Says Triveni, “I am elated to have such a cult number in the film. It plays a key role in the film and is not just a remix for the end credits. Our intention is to pay a true tribute to the original and revive it in its full glory. I am looking forward to the flower power team of Vidya and Neha (Dhupia) to break a leg.”

Songs of the Blue Hills screens in documentary competition

The 8th edition of Signs Film Festival, to be held from May 28-June 1 in Kochi (Kerala) has unveiled lineup.

Organized by the Kerala Sub Region of the Federation of Film Societies of India, the festival features a national level competition for documentaries and short fiction. It has 4 award categories: Best Documentary, Prize: Rs 50,000; Best Short Feature(duration less than 70 minutes), Prize: Rs 50,000; Cinema of Resistance (Award for the best short feature/documentary on subjects like state oppression, human rights, environmental issues, gender equality, social/cultural identity etc), Prize: Rs 25,000; Cinema Experimenta (Award for the best experimental attempt), Prize: Rs 25,000.

The 2014 Jury will be headed by filmmaker Madhushree Dutta and will consist of artist and sculptor Riyas Komu; and filmmaker and academician K.B. Venu.

In celebration of Lord Shiva’s Maha Shivratri, one of the most prominent festivals of the Hindu calendar, we bring you some of our favourite Lord Shiva related Bollywood songs.

As we explore a few of the different shades that Bollywood has celebrated Lord Shiva through, we take you on a very quick journey beginning in 1950, with the song “Bhole nath se nirala” to end with Koyla’s (1997) mischievous “Bhang Ke Nashe Mein”.

Known by at least 1008 different names, including “Kailas” (One who bestows Peace), “Shambu” (Source of everything) and “Hari” (Sustainer and Destroyer), Lord Shiva is said to have married Parvarti on Maha Shivratri. Other readings of Hinduism state that Maha Shivratri is the night on which Shiva performed “Tandava” – the dance that led to the creation, conservation and destruction of the Universe.

Mumbai, Nov 4: Names like Amjad Ali Khan and Kavita Krishnamoorthy from the Indian music industry will remember renowned Pakistani folk singer Reshma as a voice with magical powers.

Reshma, credited with songs like "Dama Dam Mast Kalandar" and "Hai O Rabba nahion lagda dil mera", breathed her last in Lahore Sunday morning.
