From ‘Superbad’ to ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin,’ these Apatow hits still hold up.
One of the big reasons I wanted to get into writing movies is because of Judd Apatow. His comedies are more than just funny – they’re heartfelt and genuine, with imperfect characters doing their best to get on with it. He helped popularize the “antihero” protagonist (Seth Rogan is a good example). Someone who’s not the brightest, not the most attractive, but their heart is in the right place… and they sure are funny. The prolific writer, producer, and director has a ton of hit movies to his name, but I want to give you my favorites. Here are the top 7 Judd Apatow comedies you can stream right now

Writer/director Michael Dougherty rose up through the Hollywood ranks authoring the scripts for multiple major blockbusters. He co-wrote the screenplay to "X2: X-Men United" and "Superman Returns" (both of which were directed by the now-disgraced Bryan Singer), and proved his horror chops with "Urban Legends: Bloody Mary," a straight-to-video threequel to the oh-yeah-i-remember-that slasher franchise from the late 1990s. Dougherty's directorial debut, the horror anthology "Trick 'r Treat," saw a slow release in 2007, but became a Halloween standard almost immediately thereafter. The man knows how to terrify audiences. His most recent film was the big-budget monster movie "Godzilla: King of the Monsters," the third film in the U.S. MonsterVerse series.
Dougherty's best film, however, came in 2015 when he made "Krampus," a Christmas horror film that's just as much a holiday standard as "Trick 'r Treat," only for Christmas. It features one of the coolest, scariest monsters of...

While it might not seem very Christmas-y, Robert Eggers’ horror remake “Nosferatu” does partly take place at Christmas, which is a very unhappy holiday for all involved. And since the movie opened on Dec. 25, you can also spend your own Christmas break watching it.
Naturally, horror and holidays go together like, well… The Grinch and the town of Whoville. Here’s a few of the better genre offerings with maximum — and frightfully merry — mayhem.
Plus, there’s no end of killer Santa movies, including “Violent Night” with David Harbour and one where a robotic Santa run amok, if those are more to your liking. But for now, check out our list, below:

The last decade has been ripe with twists on the classic horror film genre. Most recently, this has taken the form of mascot horror, a subgenre that essentially turns what could be childhood delight into a source of terror. Popular mascot horror films from the past few years have included Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, Five Nights at Freddy's, and the upcoming films Bambi: The Reckoning and Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare. While there are still plenty of conventional horror films being made, audiences are seeming to respond well to those that twist a typically jovial topic into something sinister.
In addition to mascot horror, another growingly popular trope is the Christmas horror film. This is exemplified in several recent films, such as Mean One, which combines mascot and holiday horror. 2024 saw the release of Terrifier 3, a threequel which put Art the Clown in a Christmas setting. Between these and films...

Test screenings are just one small part of the entire expansive film production process, but oftentimes, they can be one of the most significant. Film studios will put out early releases to small audiences in a bid to get feedback and criticism to give an indication if the film is on the right track, or if they have a potential flop on their hands. This is valuable as it offers insights into the minds of the wider public, and if one particular element is hated by the majority, it can quickly be cut or re-edited, thus saving the studio time and money and also crafting a potentially more successful film.
Test screenings are often a necessary evil for filmmakers, but they are far from perfect, with some of the best films of all time being put through the wringer, facing incredible criticism and backlash from the test audience. Iconic films...

Red One has finally been released, and while the film has gotten a mixed reception from viewers, fans of Red One's Krampus need to check out this twisted modern Christmas classic next. Krampus has been the sole part of Red One that has been universally acclaimed, with the 2024 comedy's take on the classic character from holiday folklore being unique. The makeup, personality, and comedy of Red One's Krampus makes the villain one of the highlights of the film, and for fans looking for more Krampus, there is an even better place to look.
In Red One, Callum Drift and Jack O'Malley have to track down Santa Claus after he is kidnapped by an unknown antagonist. Thus, the duo decides to look in the most obvious place: the realm of Krampus. In the Red One universe, Krampus is the estranged brother of Santa Claus, with the duo having a...

Plenty of comedians develop characters they perform, without breaking, on stage and screen. What separates comics like Diane Morgan (aka Philomena Cunk), Martin Short (aka Jiminy Glick), Tyler Perry (Madea) or the late Bob Einstein (Super Dave Osbourne) from Adam Ray is that the character that got him a Netflix special isn’t exactly a character: it’s the former daytime talk show host Dr. Phil McGraw.
Ray talked with me last week, before his sold-out show at New York’s Beacon Theatre as part of the New York Comedy Festival. Read on to find out how he developed the character; translating it from a Comedy Store show to a Netflix special; and what it’s like playing Dr. Phil with Dr. Phil.

Two years before he was cast as Dwight Schrute in the American remake of The Office, Rainn Wilson starred in an episode of Monk that had one of the shows most bizarre cases. Monk was a very clever whodunit for the most part, and while it had a lot of tropes, it always tried to come up with fun and creative cases for its titular character to solve. Adrian Monk was described as the greatest detective of his time, meaning that the show always had to give him equally complex cases.
One of the ways Monk found to stand out from other whodunits and crime shows was to often reveal the identity of the killer in the cold open. The real catch of a lot of Monks best episodes was not who did it but rather how or why they did it. That said, Monk did have several episodes in...

Dwayne Johnson's portrayal of Luke Hobbs in Fast Five stood out as a memorable and unique villain. Johnson played another villain two years before Hobbs: he was Agent 23 in Get Smart, a movie that had several other notable actors. Johnson's character in Fast Five was still a better villain than Agent 23 because Hobbs was much more unique.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has played villains a few times in his acting career, and he played one just two years before he took on the role of Luke Hobbs in Fast Five. Enter the hard-hitting world of the 1970s local TV news, where Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) and his loyal Channel 3 News Team are San Diego’s #1 rated news source. Sparks don’t just fly, they ignite an all-out war between the two perfectly coiffed anchorpersons. In a job where it pays to keep a straight face, Anchorman is the comedy that makes it almost impossible to stop laughing.

During Steve Carrell’s appearance on Today, anchor Savannah Guthrie talked about many topics, including an iconic movie series.
Carrell has starred in countless popular and acclaimed films like Foxcatcher, Little Miss Sunshine, and The Big Short.
One of his recent roles is his return to voicing the villain Gru in the popular Despicable Me franchise, with the fourth film arriving in early July.
While Carrell discussed that on Today, Savannah mentioned another classic set of films: Anchorman and Anchorman 2.
Carrell appeared as a main character in both films, and Savannah said she was ready for a third one to happen.
She also pleaded with Carrell about getting an Anchorman 3 film role.
Savannah asked Carrell about Anchorman 3 and her potential role

After hustling for nearly two decades to build a career as an actor and stand-up comedian, Adam Ray has recently hit on an entirely new level of exposure. The person he has to thank for it, you might be surprised to hear, is none other than Dr. Phil.
For many a performer, Ray tells Deadline, the goal is to hone one’s craft until hitting on something “that’s yours” and yours alone. This is what he’s accomplished with Dr. Phil Live!, a digital series garnering huge attention online of later, in which he plays a heightened version of the popular daytime talk show host, with the help of detailed prosthetics.

“Abba Zabba, you my only friend!” Imagine they made a Half Baked 2. That sounds like a slam dunk, right? After all, the original didn’t set the box office on fire, but it’s presumably made a mint on home video. Well, it looks like Universal finally pulled the trigger on a Half Baked 2, but of the original cast, the only person to return is Rachel True, who played the love interest, Mary Jane. Yes folks, it happened, and the sequel, Half Baked: Totally High, is going straight to Blu-ray, with an April 16th release date.
All this begs the question, why, twenty-five years later, make a Half Baked sequel without either Dave Chappelle, an infinitely bigger star now than he was in 1998, and Jim Breuer? Chappelle, I kind of get – the man is busy and would probably cost millions and millions to get, but Jim Breuer? Could...

The Office had its fair share of poorly written episodes, especially in the later seasons without Michael Scott. Fans love the show for its hilarious moments and lovable characters, but some episodes lacked the charm of earlier seasons. Despite its flaws, The Office remains a beloved sitcom with a nostalgic factor that keeps fans coming back for more.
Despite being one of the most beloved sitcoms of all time, the worst The Office episodes prove it was far from perfect. The mockumentary series had a rough start; its pilot season received several poor reviews from critics - many saying that it was just a loose Americanized reimagining of its original inspiration - and even came close to cancelation at one point. Today, The Office is still considered an all-time great sitcom and is constantly being quoted and referenced by fans, but even the best TV shows have their share of poorly written episodes.

Both Anchorman films are filled with memorable moments thanks to the talented cast's comedic timing and improvisation. Paul Rudd's performance in Anchorman helped establish him as an A-list movie star, transitioning from supporting roles to leading parts. Anchorman was initially misunderstood and criticized by some for its unique blend of low-brow comedy and high-brow filmmaking.
Paul Rudd discussed his role in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy in an interview with GQ, and the actor revealed some fascinating behind-the-scenes insights about the film. Anchorman, the 2004 comedy and theatrical debut of Academy Award-winning director Adam McKay, is perhaps the premiere 2000s comedy and a who's who of comedy legends. Rudd, Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Christina Applegate, David Koechner, and a bevy of notable cameos fill the ranks of the cast, either cementing their place in comedy or proving that they will be a fixture of Hollywood for the long future.

The subgenre of "Christmas movies" has been a curious one of late. While new movies set during the holiday season or others explicitly concerning it are released every year (especially holiday horror), it feels like we haven't gotten a new classic, gotta-watch-this-every-year holiday movie in a while. That's because, in all honesty, most classics aren't made, they're grown; it takes a few years for most films to prove their durability, and some that are overlooked upon their initial release get rediscovered and slowly morph into seasonal staples.
Filmmaker Michael Dougherty is intimately familiar with this process, as it's happened to him at least twice with two movies about two different holidays. His anthology of Halloween hijinks, 2007's "Trick 'r Treat," barely got a theatrical release before word of mouth allowed it to gain a cult reputation strong enough that a sequel has been rumored for years, and may actually happen.

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the short-lived anthology horror satire “Bobcat Goldthwait’s Misfits & Monsters,” which aired on TruTV back in 2018.
Although these days it’s known mainly as the channel on cable that plays “Impractical Jokers” all day, every day, back in 2018, Tru TV sought out to try some different programming. After successfully pulling away from their line up of reality shows, the network aimed to deliver a hefty line up of original comedy series, many of which ended up being damn good.
Among the line up introduced, there was “Bobcat Goldthwait’s Misfits & Monsters.” Comedian, actor, and director Goldthwait is no stranger to the horror genre (I loved his found footage film Willow Creek), and was the mastermind behind this delightfully unusual horror anthology series. 5 Best Christmas Horror Movies(Photo Credit –IMDb)
When one thinks of Christmas, horror, and gore are generally not the first things that come to mind. Christmas is all about having fun. It’s full of life and color, and identifying it as scary would be out of place. And while Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” does make a perfect example of a ‘scary Christmas,’ it does not qualify as a traditional, spine-chilling horror movie. But contrary to popular narrative — certain media out there does it, and does it well. Think of the latest “Fargo” episode that runs a Halloween theme and blends it with “Nightmare Before Christmas.”
So, the appeal behind it is understandable. This is why we have curated a list of the best Christmas horror movies you can enjoy for a change of pace from all the happy and sparkly traditions.

Fans have been waiting 14 years for director Michael Dougherty to get around to making a sequel to his Halloween-themed horror anthology Trick ‘r Treat, but Dougherty has stayed busy as the years have gone by, making the Christmas-themed horror film Krampus, directing Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and contributing to the scripts for X-Men: Apocalypse, Godzilla vs. Kong, and the upcoming Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Recently, there have been indications that a Trick ‘r Treat 2 might finally be moving forward. Dougherty has even said the screenplay has been written. But while he pushes that sequel toward production, he has revealed to Collider that he has an idea for Krampus 2 as well.
Dougherty told them, “We have an idea for a sequel on that one, too. It doesn’t necessarily center around a family as much as it might be about a group of strangers who are trapped somewhere.

Future Man, a short-lived comedy series, can no longer be streamed on Hulu or Disney+ due to cost-saving cuts. Fans can purchase the first two seasons of Future Man on platforms like Microsoft Store, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, and Vudu. The series, executive produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, is a raunchy, gross-out comedy that blends science fiction elements with humor.
There are a number of platforms to watch Future Man, so fans of the short-lived comedy have options to return to the series. Future Man stars a post-Hunger Games Josh Hutcherson as Josh Futturman, a custodian who successfully beats the videogame Biotic Wars. As the only person to ever do so, Josh is roped into a time and universe-hopping conflict featuring characters from the game. Each season of the show saw the actors portraying different versions of the same characters, sometimes with different names and even different personalities.

"He Got Canceled, She Got Promoted." Quiver Dist. has revealed an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Dotty & Soul, marking the feature directorial debut of actor / writer / producer Adam Saunders. It's now set to launch on VOD this May if anyone is curious. A hot shot entrepreneur gets into social meida trobule with a prblematic costume. The movie Anchorman came out in 2004, starring Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, and Paul Rudd. Originally going to be about a news crew stranded after a plane crash, the film critiques 1970s journalism. The plot has plenty of comedy, and many lines involve improvisation.
Since improvised lines can be unexpected, it is easy for other actors to break character. As a result, Rudd can remember many hilarious moments he had while filming. He once recalled one scene where he and his co-stars struggled to get through it.
